00:01:40.379 --> 00:01:44.659 I want to begin with a letter I read this week, 00:01:44.719 --> 00:01:47.340 written by a chap at the age of 66, 00:01:47.340 --> 00:01:50.040 and he wrote this, 00:01:50.320 --> 00:01:52.439 as he spoke about the work of God in his life. 00:01:53.120 --> 00:01:56.980 Did he not redeem and deliver me from being a slave in Africa? 00:01:57.659 --> 00:02:00.840 Take me up from the dunghill of sin and misery? 00:02:01.500 --> 00:02:05.100 Put me among the princes, even his own children? 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:08.140 Tame the fierce tiger in my heart, 00:02:08.139 --> 00:02:13.839 and give me a name, a place, and service in his house. 00:02:14.639 --> 00:02:16.559 The author of that letter, 00:02:16.639 --> 00:02:20.059 the author of many hundreds of wonderful gospel-rich letters, 00:02:20.179 --> 00:02:21.199 was John Newton, 00:02:21.699 --> 00:02:24.479 the author of the famous hymn Amazing Grace, 00:02:24.539 --> 00:02:25.839 which we'll sing at the end. 00:02:26.299 --> 00:02:28.199 John Newton, the former slave owner, 00:02:28.379 --> 00:02:31.399 who actually himself became a slave in Africa 00:02:31.400 --> 00:02:33.240 before being converted, 00:02:33.439 --> 00:02:34.319 becoming a pastor, 00:02:34.719 --> 00:02:37.000 working to end slavery in the UK. 00:02:37.939 --> 00:02:41.400 And what I find so lovely about this letter, 00:02:42.340 --> 00:02:45.680 written by him in those days, 00:02:45.860 --> 00:02:46.400 the late 1700s, 00:02:47.040 --> 00:02:48.500 fairly elderly man, 00:02:49.259 --> 00:02:52.580 he still had that sense of joy in knowing Jesus. 00:02:52.740 --> 00:02:54.480 That song of amazing grace 00:02:54.480 --> 00:02:57.439 was one that he still sung in his heart. 00:02:57.439 --> 00:03:02.079 He was somebody who was joyfully serving Jesus decades later. 00:03:02.900 --> 00:03:04.579 It's always a wonderful thing to see. 00:03:05.199 --> 00:03:06.460 We know in our own church 00:03:06.460 --> 00:03:08.400 the wonderful privilege of seeing 00:03:08.400 --> 00:03:10.120 older, mature Christians 00:03:10.120 --> 00:03:12.500 who have walked with Jesus for many years 00:03:12.500 --> 00:03:14.360 and continue to do so joyfully. 00:03:15.620 --> 00:03:17.039 In many ways, I think he matches, 00:03:17.159 --> 00:03:17.960 John Newton matches, 00:03:18.159 --> 00:03:20.919 the sentiments of Paul, the apostle. 00:03:21.759 --> 00:03:23.060 Paul, who would talk about himself 00:03:23.060 --> 00:03:24.439 as the chief of sinners, 00:03:25.439 --> 00:03:26.840 described himself as a blasphemer 00:03:26.840 --> 00:03:28.659 and a persecutor and a violent man. 00:03:29.700 --> 00:03:31.500 And yet God showed him grace and mercy 00:03:31.500 --> 00:03:33.219 so that he would say, 00:03:33.340 --> 00:03:34.360 for me to live is Christ 00:03:34.360 --> 00:03:36.699 and to die is gain. 00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:39.740 How we think about Jesus 00:03:39.740 --> 00:03:54.500 --> 00:03:56.560 And God's will is here expressed 00:03:56.560 --> 00:03:57.960 as walking worthy of Jesus 00:03:57.960 --> 00:03:59.659 and living to please Jesus 00:03:59.659 --> recognizing his unique relationship 00:05:24.920 --> 00:05:25.980 with the Father 00:05:25.980 --> 00:05:26.439 and they said, 00:05:26.500 --> 00:05:28.000 Lord, teach us to pray. 00:05:29.259 --> language of prayer 00:05:40.019 --> 00:05:41.180 that we find in the Bible. 00:05:41.180 --> 00:05:43.180 That's why Jesus gave 00:05:43.180 --> 00:05:44.500 the Lord's Prayer. 00:05:45.579 --> 00:05:46.579 Christians down 00:05:46.579 --> 00:05:47.379 through the centuries 00:05:47.379 --> 00:05:49.540 have used the Psalms 00:05:49.540 --> 00:05:50.840 to form their own 00:05:50.840 --> 00:05:52.000 prayer language. 00:05:52.060 --> 00:05:52.660 And then we have 00:05:52.660 --> 00:05:54.460 the models of prayer 00:05:54.460 --> 00:05:55.319 that we find in the Bible. 00:05:55.420
