If you were here last week you'll know we're kind of carrying on in John's Gospel but we're doing a little mini series within a series in John's Gospel. 00:00:10.000 --> 00:00:18.800 Looking at John chapter 6 and particularly what is known as the bread of life discourse in John 6. 00:00:18.800 --> 00:00:30.020 You might remember Jesus saying in verse 35 last week at the top of your sheets, he describes himself as bread, the bread of life. 00:00:30.480 --> 00:00:40.659 Come to me and get life, he says. And in this section that we've got printed here he's going to unpack that one verse, that little statement a little bit more. 00:00:41.460 --> 00:00:46.920 And actually not just the whole verse but one word he's going to unpack from verse 35. 00:00:46.920 --> 00:00:55.000 It's the word comes. Whoever comes to me shall not hunger or thirst. 00:00:56.219 --> 00:01:00.880 He's going to tell us now what is involved in that coming to Jesus. 00:01:02.240 --> 00:01:12.240 Namely people who come to Jesus haven't just come to him actually but they have been sent to him. 00:01:12.239 --> 00:01:17.780 They have actually been given to Jesus by the Father. 00:01:18.739 --> 00:01:23.000 Just listen to how Jesus describes these people who come to him. 00:01:23.000 --> 00:01:24.519 Verse 37. 00:01:25.659 --> 00:01:30.500 All that the Father gives to me will come to me. 00:01:31.359 --> 00:01:32.679 Verse 39. 00:01:33.519 --> 00:01:38.219 I will lose nothing of all that the Father has given to me. 00:01:38.219 --> 00:01:42.819 Christian conversion, coming to Jesus. 00:01:43.359 --> 00:01:50.859 Christian believers, he says, are not merely a random collection of people who've sort of blindly found their way to Jesus. 00:01:51.980 --> 00:01:57.420 Neither are they people who are born in a certain country or family or with a certain ethnicity. 00:01:58.700 --> 00:02:03.460 Neither are Christians manufactured by a culture around them. 00:02:03.459 --> 00:02:16.400 Jesus says a Christian is someone who is chosen and selected and presented to Jesus for salvation by God the Father. 00:02:17.599 --> 00:02:21.479 They are people given to God the Son by him. 00:02:21.479 --> 00:02:34.500 Christians are Jesus' precious possessions, gift-wrapped and delivered to Jesus' door for him to keep and to cherish and to save forever. 00:02:34.500 --> 00:02:37.939 I don't know how you feel about it. 00:02:37.939 --> 00:02:41.199 As we've gone through John, it feels like we're little toddlers, doesn't it? 00:02:41.259 --> 00:02:44.979 Paddling through the waters of John's Gospel step by step. 00:02:45.919 --> 00:02:52.000 And as we do that, in this passage, I think we suddenly kind of find ourselves dropping into the deep end. 00:02:52.860 --> 00:02:56.900 And we're up to our chins in these deep waters. 00:02:56.900 --> 00:03:02.099 Because we are entering here some deep theological waters. 00:03:03.060 --> 00:03:07.819 There's some really, really challenging content in this passage. 00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:15.159 And it's challenging not just intellectually, but experientially and morally. 00:03:15.159 --> 00:03:24.400 Jesus is talking here, isn't he, about God's choosing particular people to give to Jesus. 00:03:25.139 --> 00:03:28.740 And him not choosing others to give to Jesus. 00:03:29.240 --> 00:03:31.900 It's what theologians call election. 00:03:34.180 --> 00:03:41.659 The early church leader, Erasmus, said that passages like this should never be preached at all. 00:03:41.659 --> 00:03:48.120 He said, some things are of such a kind that even if they were true and might be known, 00:03:48.699 --> 00:03:53.680 it would not be proper to, he says, prostitute them before common ears. 00:03:54.479 --> 00:03:57.000 Now forgive his political incorrectness there. 00:03:58.120 --> 00:04:03.560 But he and many others say that with this subject, we get to passages like this, 00:04:03.620 --> 00:04:05.359 and there should be a big red flag. 00:04:07.039 --> 00:04:10.979 But the man who wrote these words, John, is clear, isn't he? 00:04:10.979 --> 00:04:13.579 At the end of his gospel, in John 20, he says, 00:04:14.019 --> 00:04:17.560 These things, this whole gospel is written that you may believe. 00:04:18.360 --> 00:04:20.899 There's no little footnote, is there, in John 20, 00:04:21.000 --> 00:04:24.480 saying, apart from John chapter 6, verse 35 to 47. 00:04:25.079 --> 00:04:26.500 John, who writes this, says, 00:04:26.579 --> 00:04:28.920 No, the flag is well and truly green. 00:04:29.819 --> 00:04:31.159 You've got to preach this. 00:04:31.800 --> 00:04:32.699 You've got to hear this. 00:04:32.699 --> 00:04:40.079 And Jesus himself says, actually, this subject of God choosing, of election, 00:04:40.439 --> 00:04:43.039 is definitely for everyone to hear. 00:04:44.399 --> 00:04:48.159 In the context here, do you notice who he is speaking to here? 00:04:48.680 --> 00:04:54.139 He's speaking to people he says, verse 36, do not believe. 00:04:54.139 --> 00:05:03.539 He is speaking to an audience of some believers and non-believers and non-Christians. 00:05:04.879 --> 00:05:09.879 If that's you here this afternoon, Jesus thinks that you need to hear about this. 00:05:11.219 --> 00:05:15.579 Oddly, he decides, doesn't he, that what you need to hear is this deep subject 00:05:15.579 --> 00:05:20.879 about God's infallible, definite, predetermined plan 00:05:20.879 --> 00:05:24.139 to give some people to Jesus and not to others. 00:05:24.459 --> 00:05:24.859 Election. 00:05:26.599 --> 00:05:28.539 If you're a regular here, many of you are, 00:05:28.599 --> 00:05:32.060 how would you feel if we announced that in, I don't know, Easter time 00:05:32.060 --> 00:05:36.180 we were going to do a sort of evangelistic series of talks? 00:05:36.279 --> 00:05:37.620 Sometimes we do them, don't we? 00:05:38.919 --> 00:05:42.240 And it would be a series of talks where you could invite your friends along, 00:05:42.240 --> 00:05:48.100 it would be accessible to people that have never heard about Jesus or read the Bible, 00:05:48.960 --> 00:05:51.460 and it would be sensitive to them. 00:05:52.300 --> 00:05:55.439 But the subject matter was not going to be on the question of, 00:05:55.560 --> 00:05:56.300 is there a God? 00:05:57.180 --> 00:05:59.900 Or even, why does God allow suffering? 00:06:00.120 --> 00:06:02.420 Or, why can we trust the Bible? 00:06:02.720 --> 00:06:04.360 Although they're good things to ask, aren't they? 00:06:04.699 --> 00:06:06.860 But actually, we're going to do a series on election. 00:06:07.500 --> 00:06:08.199 How would you feel? 00:06:09.240 --> 00:06:10.819 We're not going to do that, I don't think. 00:06:10.819 --> 00:06:13.339 But you never hear that, do you? 00:06:13.480 --> 00:06:18.819 You never hear of speech missions, or evangelistic meetings, 00:06:19.099 --> 00:06:21.259 or university outreach missions, 00:06:21.779 --> 00:06:23.659 that are focused on that subject. 00:06:24.839 --> 00:06:28.100 Yet here, Jesus preaches election 00:06:28.100 --> 00:06:31.019 in an evangelistic sermon 00:06:31.019 --> 00:06:33.959 to believers and unbelievers. 00:06:34.420 --> 00:06:35.879 To a mixture of people. 00:06:36.839 --> 00:06:40.480 And we wonder, why does he do that? 00:06:40.819 --> 00:06:44.540 Well, I think Jesus gives us two reasons. 00:06:44.800 --> 00:06:47.800 One is a positive reason, one is a negative reason. 00:06:49.040 --> 00:06:53.800 First off, we learn here that those given to Jesus 00:06:53.800 --> 00:06:57.399 will come to Jesus. 00:06:58.240 --> 00:07:02.180 Those given to Jesus will come to him. 00:07:02.319 --> 00:07:03.939 Look at verse 37 again. 00:07:03.939 --> 00:07:07.759 All that the Father gives to me 00:07:07.759 --> 00:07:10.399 will come to me. 00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:14.319 People who are chosen 00:07:14.319 --> 00:07:17.279 and given to Jesus Christ 00:07:17.279 --> 00:07:18.319 by God the Father 00:07:18.319 --> 00:07:20.259 to be rescued and loved 00:07:20.259 --> 00:07:23.120 will find themselves 00:07:23.120 --> 00:07:24.399 coming to him 00:07:24.399 -->
