I'm not good enough. I'm not smart enough. I'm not fit enough. we're going to see today is that in Christianity, you can discover that you are of infinite, 00:01:31.939 --> 00:01:37.239 inestimable worth, and in the sight of God, and in the person of Jesus Games. 00:01:53.859 --> 00:01:55.900 One of them is Harold Abrahams. 00:01:57.200 --> 00:01:58.840 The other is Eric Little. 00:01:59.359 --> 00:02:01.200 He healed from around the corner here in Edinburgh. 00:02:02.920 --> 00:02:04.719 Now, Abrahams was a Jewish man, 00:02:05.239 --> 00:02:09.500 and he had faced a lifetime of anti-Semitic discrimination and prejudice. 00:02:09.500 --> 00:02:12.000 But that didn't hold him back. 00:02:12.159 --> 00:02:16.460 Rather, it propelled him, motivated him, to try and prove everyone wrong about him. 00:02:17.520 --> 00:02:20.659 He wanted to this scene where he's in the changing rooms, he's with a friend, 00:02:31.199 --> 00:02:35.780 and he confines in his friend the stress and strain that he is feeling under. 00:02:35.780 --> 00:02:39.939 He says, this is what he's thinking whenever he's going to go out in the track. 00:02:40.360 --> 00:02:46.020 He says, I will raise my eyes and look down that corridor four feet wide 00:02:46.020 --> 00:02:53.039 with ten lonely seconds to justify my whole existence. 00:02:55.719 --> 00:03:00.340 Abraham there is confessing that he believed that his whole worth and significance in life 00:03:00.340 --> 00:03:03.900 rested upon his performance, on his success, 00:03:04.539 --> 00:03:08.699 in how he ran that race and what position he finished in that race. 00:03:11.159 --> partly because we live in a secular society here in 21st century Scotland. 00:04:00.079 --> 00:04:03.599 The scientists and the philosophers, they tell us that we have come from nothing 00:04:03.599 and have a new start here in Scotland in the year 2001. 00:05:36.040 --> 00:05:41.120 And given the chance of that fresh start to leave behind the shame and the embarrassment and the trouble that I try to be top of the class, to become head boy of the school, 00:05:54.459 --> 00:05:59.780 to go to a prestigious university, to get a good degree, to build my CV, to get a good job. 00:06:01.879 --> --> 00:07:03.339 They're going to be illustrated from the film, Chariots of Fire, that we've started with this morning. 00:07:03.339 --> 00:07:10.539 The first strategy is the Harold Abraham's way of life, and it says that your worth must be achieved. 00:07:11.099 --> 00:07:12.539 It's that equation we've already seen. 00:07:12.839 --> 00:07:15.839 My performance equals my worth, my value. 00:07:15.839 --> 00:07:24.939 This is the life of striving for success, to be the best or at least to be better than some other people, 00:07:25.439 --> 00:07:26.979 and then you can feel okay about yourself. 00:07:28.899 --> 00:07:33.879 I think many of us naturally, I think actually all of us come into this world thinking this way. 00:07:34.279 --> 00:07:36.399 This is our default setting, if you like. 00:07:37.939 --> 00:07:41.959 But the question is, does this strategy of achieving our worth, does it actually work? 00:07:42.099 --> 00:07:42.959 Does it pay off? 00:07:42.959 --> 00:07:50.180 And I think you'll find, if you look at the people who have tasted success, who have reached the top, 00:07:50.699 --> 00:07:53.859 I think you'll find that they have discovered it
