It's about the good news of Jesus' life and death and resurrection. 00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:38.960 And we're continuing along in chapter 8, which is about life in the Spirit. 00:00:39.659 --> 00:00:41.280 That is the Holy Spirit. 00:00:41.740 --> 00:00:48.679 Last week, verses 14 through 17, we began to look at all the benefits that come to us from the Holy Spirit. 00:00:48.780 --> 00:00:53.340 And we saw that we are adopted as God's children, God's heirs. 00:00:53.740 --> 00:00:56.700 But then we ended with a little bit of a catch. 00:00:56.700 --> 00:00:58.620 Verse 17 said this. 00:00:58.619 --> 00:01:15.819 So that's great that we experience glory, but first, suffering. 00:01:16.500 --> 00:01:21.019 So our question this week, and this is what Paul sets out to answer in verse 18. 00:01:21.019 --> 00:01:23.339 Okay, there is glory coming. 00:01:24.479 --> 00:01:28.019 How do we make it through the suffering in the meantime? 00:01:29.060 --> 00:01:31.619 We do have what Paul is banking on here in verse 18. 00:05:10.540 --> 00:05:15.800 I've already pointed out we're coming off of verse 17 where he says suffering, then glory. 00:05:16.020 --> 00:05:16.900 Okay, at two questions very simply to structure our time together. 00:06:05.360 --> 00:06:07.960 Question one, what is the glory? 00:06:08.960 --> 00:06:12.060 Question two, why is it so much better? the world is Paul talking about? 00:06:22.920 --> 00:06:29.080 Paul here is referring to the end of the story of this world. 00:06:29.079 --> 00:06:38.120 When Paul talks about glory, he is telling us what the last chapter of life on this earth will be. 00:06:38.319 --> 00:06:48.019 This is something the Bible explains for us in places like Matthew chapter 25, John chapter 5, Revelation chapters 21 and 22. 00:06:48.899 --> 00:06:52.099 It says, hey, here's the last chapter, here's what it's going to look like. 00:06:52.100 --> 00:06:55.840 And I'm going to tell you kind of very briefly what that story is. 00:06:55.840 --> 00:07:02.800 In the last chapter, Jesus, in his physical body, returns to the earth. 00:07:03.820 --> 00:07:06.400 So we refer to it as Jesus' second coming. 00:07:06.879 --> 00:07:10.420 His first coming, we celebrate at Christmas. 00:07:10.900 --> 00:07:13.500 His second coming, we look forward to now. 00:07:14.340 --> 00:07:17.220 So Jesus is going to return to the earth in his second coming. 00:07:17.220 --> 00:07:21.880 At that time, there will be a resurrection from the dead. 00:07:22.660 --> 00:07:26.300 Everyone who has ever died will be raised to life. 00:07:27.320 --> 00:07:30.800 John chapter 5, Jesus tells this to us explicitly. 00:07:31.040 --> 00:07:33.240 He says there's actually going to be two resurrections. 00:07:33.700 --> 00:07:37.460 There will be the resurrection of life and the resurrection of judgment. 00:07:38.440 --> 00:07:38.580 Okay? 00:07:39.740 --> 00:07:43.700 Resurrection of life is for those who have followed Jesus in 00:08:10.939 --> 00:08:13.539 However, we also want to know, we need to know about the place. 00:08:13.719 --> 00:08:15.099 What is heaven? 00:08:15.100 --> 00:08:16.980 What exactly are we talking about? 00:08:17.439 --> 00:08:20.260 Many people, of course, think about angels playing harps. 00:08:20.340 --> 00:08:23.860 Whether they will or will not is probably neither here nor there. 00:08:24.600 --> 00:08:26.520 Some people refer to it as heaven. 00:08:27.080 --> 00:08:31.780 Revelation chapter 21 calls it a new heaven and a new earth. 00:08:32.100 --> 00:08:37.360 Very briefly, the new heaven and the new earth is a real physical place. 00:08:37.360 --> 00:08:46.580 It is like this earth, but surprise, new and better, even better than Eden. 00:08:47.300 --> 00:08:54.200 So whatever good thing you have loved, experienced here on earth in heaven, it will be greater and better. 00:08:54.200 --> 00:09:00.540 All sin, sickness, disease, pain, sorrow, suffering will be done away with. 00:09:01.540 --> 00:09:09.120 Most importantly, we will finally be in God's presence. 00:09:09.120 --> 00:09:12.279 By the way, that's how some people define heaven. 00:09:12.360 --> fall apart on us. 00:11:10.580 --> 00:11:16.920 We're told that in heaven, and Paul talks about this in 1 Corinthians chapter 15, by the way, if you want to read more about it. 00:11:17.280 --> 00:11:27.300 We are going to have a new body that has no disease, no sickness, no decay, no pain, no suffering. 00:11:27.299 --> 00:11:35.359 So the future glory that you're looking forward to will aspect of it, 00:12:18.739 --> 00:12:20.439 and there's a reason that I'll explain to you. 00:12:20.739 --> 00:12:24.500 So there's a famous quote by a man named Bruce Marshall, 00:12:24.500 --> 00:12:25.360 and he says this, 00:12:26.059 --> 00:12:34.480 The young man who rings the bell at the brothel is unconsciously looking for God. 00:12:35.740 --> 00:12:38.299 And when I heard that quote as a much younger person, I thought, 00:12:38.399 --> 00:12:39.500 you know, that doesn't really make sense. 00:12:39.559 --> 00:12:42.440 That sounds to me like we're really over-spiritualizing presence, there is fullness of joy. 00:13:42.479 --> 00:13:48.899 When we talk about heaven, people often like to think about the things or the experiences that they will get in heaven. 00:13:49.000 --> 00:13:50.039 And that is good and right. 00:13:51.059 --> 00:13:59.120 But if we only think about things and experiences, we have lost the plot. 00:13:59.120 --> 00:14:06.179 The most important thing about heaven is that God is there. 00:14:07.799 --> 00:14:15.600 The most glorious thing about heaven is God's presence fully and finally. 00:14:17.000 --> 00:14:19.740 Remember the covenant in the Old Testament, God's promise. 00:14:19.899 --> 00:14:21.100 He says, I will be your God. 00:14:21.899 --> 00:14:23.080 You will be mine. 00:14:29.120 --> 00:14:38.879 The fact that we're heirs of God, and that includes, it means God himself is part of our inheritance. 00:14:39.399 --> 00:14:43.100 Being with him is what it is that we look forward to. 00:14:43.700 --> 00:14:48.480 In the Old Testament, as God's people were traveling around, they had the tabernacle, 00:14:48.620 --> 00:14:51.720 and the placement of the tabernacle was extremely important. 00:14:52.179 --> 00:14:53.139 It was in the middle. 00:14:53.139 --> 00:15:00.399 And all the tribes were camped out on the sides of it, which is God's way of teaching his people in the Old Testament 00:15:00.399 --> 00:15:04.419 that he and his presence would be in the midst of them. 00:15:05.319 --> 00:15:08.480 That was the greatest thing he could give them. 00:15:09.860 --> 00:15:15.639 The giver is the source of all the
