belonging 00:00:57.600 --> 00:00:59.600 that Jesus imparted to his disciples, 00:01:00.320 --> 00:01:02.640 a connection that was derived from God, 00:01:02.899 --> 00:01:05.019 but that would sustain them when they were scattered, 00:01:05.560 --> 00:01:06.359 in their doubts, 00:01:06.460 --> 00:01:08.579 and in the difficult days that lay ahead for them. 00:01:09.540 --> 00:01:13.120 The chapters that we've been exploring over these past few weeks 00:01:13.120 --> 00:01:16.180 all take place in a four- to five-hour conversation 00:01:16.180 --> 00:01:18.879 between Jesus and his disciples over a meal. 00:01:19.719 --> 00:01:21.260 It starts at chapter 13, 00:01:21.379 --> 00:01:23.480 in the passage that you'll be familiar with, 00:01:23.480 --> 00:01:25.780 where Jesus washes his disciples' feet. 00:01:25.780 --> 00:01:31.219 And so the passage in chapter 17 that Helen just read for us 00:01:31.219 --> 00:01:33.120 draws this time to a conclusion. 00:01:34.359 --> 00:01:37.740 Jesus' main concern is that he wants the disciples 00:01:37.740 --> 00:01:40.060 to understand that God should be glorified, 00:01:40.560 --> 00:01:43.480 that everything he's done is in fulfilment of God's plan, 00:01:43.840 --> 00:01:47.020 including the call on the lives of a people to trust in him. 00:01:48.159 --> 00:01:50.980 And this is the last chapter before Jesus is arrested, 00:01:51.379 --> 00:01:52.719 before he's tried and crucified. 00:01:52.719 --> 00:01:57.920 And so what we have here is an experience of Jesus, 00:01:58.260 --> 00:02:01.299 a experience of Jesus that the disciples had not had. 00:02:01.840 --> 00:02:02.900 Throughout these chapters, 00:02:03.280 --> 00:02:06.359 we've had a real sense of the emotion that they've experienced, in Jesus' ministry. 00:02:15.020 --> 00:02:19.800 And in this time, Jesus has compressed some of the most confronting 00:02:19.800 --> 00:02:23.420 and challenging and comforting words that this group of men would hear. 00:02:24.000 --> 00:02:25.960 They've asked questions, they've listened, 00:02:26.480 --> 00:02:29.879 and I can imagine them feeling pretty emotionally and physically exhausted. witnessing something that is really profound for these men. 00:02:48.439 --> 00:02:49.319 And then along the way, 00:02:49.420 --> 00:02:51.700 we realize that he's also talking to us. 00:02:53.280 assures his disciples 00:03:12.759 --> 00:03:16.439 that they will continue to belong to him after he has gone. 00:03:17.539 --> 00:03:18.840 And so at the end of this time, 00:03:19.139 --> 00:03:20.180 Jesus turns to prayer. 00:03:21.300 --> 00:03:24.740 It's a prayer that gives us some deep insight into the heart of Jesus 00:03:24.740 --> 00:03:26.680 and his desire for his followers. 00:03:27.780 --> 00:03:29.900 It's a personal conversation with his father 00:03:29.900 --> 00:03:33.400 that he opens up for the disciples to hear and experience. 00:03:33.400 --> 00:03:38.080 This is the only time in the Bible we get a glimpse of the prayer 00:03:38.080 --> 00:03:40.060 of one person of the Trinity to another. 00:03:40.960 --> 00:03:44.540 We're invited into this intimate fellowship between father and son. 00:03:46.159 --> 00:03:48.200 So there are three parts to Jesus' prayer. 00:03:48.439 --> 00:03:49.300 He prays for himself, 00:03:49.680 --> 00:03:50.719 he prays for the disciples, 00:03:51.219 --> 00:03:53.700 and he prays for those who would believe the church. 00:03:54.460 --> 00:03:56.620 Let's start with the first prayer in verse one. 00:03:56.620 --> 00:03:59.580 Father, the hour has come. 00:04:00.140 --> 00:04:02.960 Glorify your son that your son might glorify you. 00:04:04.200 --> 00:04:07.520 This request that Jesus has for glorification 00:04:07.520 --> 00:04:09.659 is not about selfish ambition, 00:04:10.060 --> 00:04:12.140 but fulfilling his divine purpose. 00:04:13.040 --> 00:04:14.280 He lifts his eyes to heaven, 00:04:14.580 --> 00:04:15.580 the posture of prayer, 00:04:15.960 --> 00:04:18.680 but it says so much more to the disciples in the room 00:04:18.680 --> 00:04:21.340 about the relationship Jesus has with his father. 00:04:21.339 --> 00:04:24.459 Jesus' prayer is conveying to God 00:04:24.459 --> 00:04:26.779 that he has done what God has asked him. 00:04:27.359 --> 00:04:28.500 He has completed the mission, 00:04:29.119 --> 00:04:30.319 he's brought glory to God, 00:04:30.799 --> 00:04:34.000 and seeks that God would continue to glorify him 00:04:34.000 --> 00:04:35.259 as he faces the cross. the timing and purpose on earth 00:04:51.300 --> 00:04:53.400 for him are God's timing, 00:04:53.720 --> 00:04:54.780 not for him to choose. 00:04:56.060 --> 00:04:58.579 Earlier in his ministry at the wedding of Cana, 00:04:59.060 --> 00:05:01.379 Jesus responds to his own mother's request 00:05:01.379 --> 00:05:03.939 for him to intervene, to get more wine, 00:05:04.560 --> 00:05:07.580 by saying in John chapter two, verse four, 00:05:07.960 --> 00:05:09.439 my hour has not yet come. 00:05:10.340 --> 00:05:12.120 And then later in chapter seven, 00:05:12.460 --> 00:05:15.080 his brothers urge him to go to Jerusalem, 00:05:15.519 --> 00:05:16.680 and he says to them, 00:05:16.879 --> 00:05:18.340 my hour has not yet come. 00:05:19.100 --> 00:05:20.439 And yet here he says, 00:05:20.439 --> 00:05:21.579 my hour has come, 00:05:22.180 --> 00:05:26.459 because he knew that the timing of the plan for his life 00:05:26.459 --> 00:05:27.779 was God's to decide, 00:05:28.399 --> 00:05:31.000 and his purpose on earth was to bring God glory. 00:05:33.259 --> 00:05:34.720 In verses two and three, 00:05:34.860 --> 00:05:37.420 Jesus repeats that his purpose is connected simple. 00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:02.740 Eternal life isn't something that starts when we die. 00:06:03.139 --> 00:06:04.819 It isn't something that we search for 00:06:04.819 --> 00:06:06.240 in a great quest to Mordor, 00:06:06.240 --> 00:06:08.100 or that we spend our lives 00:06:08.100 --> 00:06:09.720 trying to be good to achieve. 00:06:10.420 --> 00:06:11.960 Eternal life is for all 00:06:11.960 --> 00:06:13.579 who know the one true God 00:06:13.579 --> 00:06:14.879 and his son Jesus. 00:06:15.800 --> 00:06:17.060 What Jesus is telling them 00:06:17.060 --> 00:06:18.800 is that eternal life starts then. 00:06:20.460 --> 00:06:22.079 Verse three assures us today 00:06:22.079 --> 00:06:24.639 that when we come to know God and his son, 00:06:25.259 --> 00:06:27.280 we start to experience the things of heaven. 00:06:28.259 --> 00:06:29.480 Heaven is, after all, 00:06:29.699 --> 00:06:31.480 about the presence of our heavenly father. 00:06:32.199 --> 00:06:33.379 The more we know Jesus, and continual experience 00:07:03.779 --> 00:07:05.339 from the consequences of sin 00:07:05.339 --> 00:07:07.000 in our own lives and in the world. 00:07:08.000 --> 00:07:09.379 Jesus' prayer for himself 00:07:09.379 --> 00:07:11.180 makes clear that his purpose 00:07:11.180 --> 00:07:13.019 was restoring that relationship 00:07:13.019 --> 00:07:14.839 and at its core 00:07:14.839 --> 00:07:16.939 is the eternal life that we know now. 00:07:17.799 --> 00:07:19.419 He reverses the effects of sin 00:07:19.419 --> 00:07:21.039 so that we can know God 00:07:21.039 --> 00:07:21.919 Next, Jesus shifts his focus to the disciples, 00:07:47.759 --> 00:07:48.840 praying for their protection, 00:07:49.300 --> 00:07:51.100 their sanctification and their unity. 00:07:52.640 --> 00:07:54.180 Jesus' desire is that God 00:07:54.180 --> 00:07:55.960 would accomplish his plan 00:07:55.960 --> 00:07:56.800 through the mission 00:07:56.800 --> 00:07:58.300 and the ministry of these men. 00:07:59.640 --> 00:08:01.740 In the context of the room he's in 00:08:01.740 --> 00:08:03.620 alongside his disciples, 00:08:04.960 --> 00:08:06.180 he wants them to understand 00:08:06.180 --> 00:08:07.240 that they are God's people, 00:08:07.620 --> 00:08:09.000 that they have been called by God, 00:08:09.360 --> 00:08:10.780 that they are dependent on him 00:08:10.780 --> 00:08:12.980 and that they belong to God 00:08:12.980 --> 00:08:14.580 and as we see in verse 6, 00:08:14.879 --> 00:08:15.920 they were given to Jesus. 00:08:17.300 --> 00:08:18.259 Jesus makes clear 00:08:18.259 --> 00:08:43.039 Here we see Jesus interceding for the disciples. 00:08:43.039 --> 00:08:46.699 He's representing their fledgling belief to God 00:08:46.699 --> 00:08:48.919 so that he might protect and preserve them. 00:08:49.879 --> 00:08:53.099 It's evident that despite still being so frail as humans, 00:08:53.219 --> 00:08:54.500 the apostles have accepted 00:08:54.500 --> 00:08:56.819 what Jesus has told them, 00:08:57.059 --> 00:08:57.959 that they believe, 00:08:58.439 --> 00:08:59.500 that they have acted on 00:08:59.500 --> 00:09:01.259 and that they have acted on what they heard. 00:09:01.959 --> 00:09:03.679 They might still have lots of questions, 00:09:04.039 --> 00:09:05.439 they might not understand it all, 00:09:05.639 --> 00:09:07.179 but they trust and they believe. 00:09:07.179 --> 00:09:11.000 In verse 9, Jesus prays, 00:09:11.120 --> 00:09:11.959 I'm praying for them. 00:09:12.199 --> 00:09:13.279 I'm not praying for the world, 00:09:13.819 --> 00:09:15.519 but for those whom you have given me, 00:09:15.599 --> 00:09:16.439 for they are yours. 00:09:17.059 --> 00:09:18.859 Now, why wouldn't Jesus pray for the world? 00:09:19.679 --> 00:09:20.859 It feels a bit uncomfortable, 00:09:21.399 --> 00:09:23.299 maybe feels a bit unusual 00:09:23.299 --> 00:09:26.479 with what we might see the world describe Jesus as. 00:09:26.539 --> 00:09:29.199 He doesn't pray this blanket love for everyone. 00:09:29.979 --> 00:09:31.659 He deliberately prays 00:09:31.659 --> 00:09:33.500 for those who have been chosen. 00:09:33.500 --> 00:09:37.259 Jesus does pray for the lost 00:09:37.259 --> 00:09:40.100 in other gospel records in Luke 23, 00:09:40.399 --> 00:09:41.440 and later in this chapter, 00:09:42.059 --> 00:09:43.159 we find Jesus praying 00:09:43.159 --> 00:09:44.659 for those who will believe in me, 00:09:44.820 --> 00:09:46.980 for those who are yet Christians. 00:09:47.980 --> 00:09:48.679 But here, 00:09:49.059 --> 00:09:51.379 he's specifically focused on the disciples, 00:09:51.559 --> 00:09:52.419 his chosen few, 00:09:52.919 --> 00:09:54.220 in this final time with them. 00:09:56.159 --> 00:09:57.700 Those Jesus is praying for 00:09:57.700 --> 00:09:59.259 have come to know in truth 00:09:59.259 --> 00:10:01.000 that Jesus came from God 00:10:01.000 --> 00:10:02.559 and they have believed 00:10:02.559 --> 00:10:03.899 that the Father sent Jesus. 00:10:04.979 --> 00:10:06.459 He prays for their protection, 00:10:07.559 --> 00:10:09.179 which we see in verse 11, 00:10:09.279 --> 00:10:10.379 the power of your name, 00:10:10.639 --> 00:10:11.759 the name you have given me, 00:10:11.819 --> 00:10:12.579 has covered them. 00:10:14.299 --> 00:10:15.699 Jesus goes on to acknowledge 00:10:15.699 --> 00:10:17.279 that from it. 00:10:34.519 --> 00:10:36.259 They will continue to face persecution, 00:10:36.480 --> 00:10:37.539 and they will ultimately 00:10:37.539 --> 00:10:39.279 lose their lives on earth.
