assaulted by three rogues who are called faint heart, guilt, and mistrust. 00:00:40.900 --> 00:00:45.840 Allegorically, these all exist within this character, Little Faith. 00:00:46.460 --> study and consider the story we're going to see in Judges chapter 4 for my own sake. 00:02:27.139 --> 00:02:34.599 And so, in today's text, there's another character, little faith kind of character. 00:02:34.599 --> 00:02:42.919 And I hope that our consideration of him, as it served my soul, will also be of great encouragement to your soul today. 00:02:43.879 --> 00:02:50.900 So, Judges chapter 4, before I lead us in reading it, beloved, this is God's word to us, written for his glory and our good. 00:02:51.699 --> 00:02:58.359 And so, we would all do well to listen to it in order to believe its promises and to obey its commands. 00:02:58.360 --> 00:03:02.180 Judges chapter 4, beginning in verse 1. 00:03:03.560 --> 00:03:09.480 And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight 00:07:27.759 until they destroyed Jabin king of Canaan. 00:07:27.759 --> 00:07:32.920 Now I shared with you last week as we overviewed the book of Judges 00:07:32.920 --> 00:07:36.060 that a pattern is presented in the text, 00:07:36.120 --> 00:07:39.500 which is seen in today's chapter very clearly. 00:07:40.779 --> 00:07:42.819 Number one, the people rebel. 00:07:43.240 --> 00:07:45.519 There's the death of one of the judges, 00:07:46.039 --> 00:07:47.019 and some time passes, 00:07:47.399 --> 00:07:48.240 and the people rebel. 00:07:48.360 --> 00:07:49.539 We see this in verse one. 00:07:49.540 --> 00:07:57.460 And the people of Israel again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord after Ehud died. 00:07:57.700 --> 00:08:00.260 So that's the first step in the pattern that we see. 00:08:00.640 --> 00:08:05.220 Secondly, we see that God hands them over to the people of the land. 00:08:05.600 --> 00:08:10.100 In this case, it's into the hand of Jabin king of Canaan, 00:08:10.320 --> 00:08:12.820 who reigned in Hazor. 00:08:12.819 --> 00:08:16.399 So there's this regional thing going on in the land at this time. 00:08:16.459 --> 00:08:21.259 So it's likely this area that's under the command of Jabin the king. 00:08:21.620 --> 00:08:25.759 And we see that he has a commander, a general by the name of Sisera, 00:08:25.939 --> 00:08:27.279 and a mighty army. 00:08:27.360 --> 00:08:30.980 And that's what's being communicated to us in verse three. 00:08:31.100 --> 00:08:33.019 And the reason that people cry out for help 00:08:33.019 --> 00:08:38.740 is there's this insurmountable army of 900 chariots of iron. 00:08:39.059 --> 00:08:42.220 It was like the tanks of their day. 00:08:42.220 --> 00:08:49.080 And we see that Jabin oppresses the people of Israel cruelly for a time of 20 years. 00:08:49.180 --> 00:08:50.779 So that's the second step. 00:08:50.920 --> 00:08:54.800 God in judgment hands them over to the people of the land. 00:08:55.320 --> 00:09:01.180 Thirdly, we see that God shows them mercy by raising up a judge. 00:09:01.379 --> 00:09:10.160 And in this case, most commentators agree two judges in the form of Deborah and Barak. 00:09:10.159 --> 00:09:13.860 So you'll see them often in lists, Deborah slash Barak, 00:09:13.939 --> 00:09:16.919 that they together were judging at this time 00:09:16.919 --> 00:09:20.379 and delivering Israel from their oppressors. 00:09:20.939 --> 00:09:24.240 Now in Hebrew, the name Deborah means to pronounce. 00:09:25.019 --> 00:09:29.819 And we will see why that's such a fitting name for her in just a moment. 00:09:29.820 --> 00:09:34.600 At this point, we're not going to focus most of our attention on Deborah today, 00:09:34.720 --> 00:09:36.760 but rather on Barak. 00:09:36.860 --> 00:09:39.680 But I want to address the egalitarian argument 00:09:39.680 --> 00:09:42.800 that Deborah serving as a judge in the book of Judges 00:09:42.800 --> 00:09:46.720 justifies women serving in the office of pastor. 00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:52.779 We believe that the office of pastor or elder, same word, congruous, 00:09:53.040 --> 00:09:59.080 is reserved for qualified men. 00:09:59.940 --> 00:10:02.480 And both of these stipulations are important. 00:10:03.399 --> 00:10:10.320 Men, but not just men, but qualified men, are to hold the office. 00:10:10.320 --> 00:10:14.160 And today is not for a sermon on that in particular, 00:10:14.460 --> 00:10:18.600 but this is what we believe the office is meant to who it is meant to be held by. 00:10:19.720 --> 00:10:24.440 Deborah is undoubtedly used of God in this instance in Israel's history. 00:10:25.500 --> 00:10:32.340 Women generally have been and are most certainly used by God in the life of His church. 00:10:33.100 --> 00:10:37.080 We have every reason to be incredibly thankful for the beautiful ways 00:10:37.080 --> 00:10:41.400 that the women of our church are vital to the function of our church. 00:10:42.259 --> 00:10:45.780 Very important to be sure. 00:10:45.920 --> 00:10:49.660 Ladies, we are extremely grateful for you. 00:10:50.800 --> 00:10:54.900 But it is reckless hermeneutics that want to draw parallels 00:10:54.900 --> 00:11:00.360 between the office that Deborah holds here and the church office of pastor. 00:11:00.540 --> 00:11:03.259 So I just want to take that off the table for us. 00:11:03.259 --> 00:11:09.819 Deborah, in this episode, is the person of greater faith. 00:11:10.039 --> 00:11:14.139 She is more to be emulated in this chapter. 00:11:15.159 --> 00:11:19.360 We're going to focus, as I said, much of our attention on Barak today, 00:11:19.360 --> 00:11:26.580 but not for his superior faith, but rather his weakness of faith. 00:11:28.240 --> 00:11:31.879 Of interest and perhaps in clever juxtaposition, 00:11:31.879 --> 00:11:36.340 the Hebrew name Barak means lightning. 00:11:37.519 --> 00:11:41.539 So this general of Israel's army, General Lightning, 00:11:42.539 --> 00:11:48.659 will need the prompting of Deborah to carry out God's purpose for him. 00:11:48.759 --> 00:11:53.220 I think that's meant to be striking, especially to readers of Hebrew, 00:11:53.220 --> 00:11:56.379 that this guy, General Lightning, 00:11:57.220 --> 00:12:02.680 Deborah has to approach and remind him of what God had said to him. 00:12:03.820 --> 00:12:04.759 So that was the third step. 00:12:04.879 --> 00:12:08.399 God shows mercy to his people by raising up a judge. 00:12:09.560 --> 00:12:12.899 Fourthly, the judge, by God's help, delivers the Israelites, 00:12:13.340 --> 00:12:16.600 and they have rest. 00:12:16.600 --> 00:12:19.460 And so we see that in verse 23 and 24. 00:12:19.659 --> 00:12:26.200 On that day, God subdued Jabin, the king of Canaan, before the people of Israel. 00:12:26.259 --> 00:12:30.700 Earlier in the chapter, we see that the people are routed, 00:12:31.240 --> 00:12:36.560 and I wish we had more storyline there to understand how it is that those people were conquered. 00:12:36.899 --> 00:12:40.639 But I think the point where our fixation is supposed to be is that God accomplished it. 00:12:40.639 --> 00:12:45.039 The details of exactly how they fought that battle are not terribly important. 00:12:45.139 --> 00:12:48.659 What is important is that God did that work, 00:12:48.720 --> 00:12:55.319 these 10,000 men against this mighty army with these 900 chariots of metal. 00:12:55.759 --> 00:12:59.960 So on that day, God subdued Jabin, the king of Canaan, before the people of Israel. land had rest for 40 years. 00:13:19.879 --> 00:13:21.319 So we see that cycle once again. 00:13:21.460 --> 00:13:23.799 The judge, by God's help, delivers the Israelites, 00:13:24.419 --> 00:13:26.080 and they have rest. 00:13:27.500 --> 00:13:30.639 But then, the last step, the judge dies, 00:13:31.340 --> 00:13:36.059 and the people return to their wickedness. 00:13:36.059 --> 00:13:39.399 Remember, I read to you in verse 1, right? 00:13:39.439 --> 00:13:43.759 It was Israel again being wicked because Ehud had died. 00:13:43.859 --> 00:13:46.779 And then we see in Judges chapter 6 and verse 1, 00:13:46.859 --> 00:13:51.519 The people of Israel did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. 00:13:51.559 --> 00:13:54.019 And the Lord then gives them into the hand of Midian, 00:13:54.139 --> 00:13:57.299 and the cycle goes round and round. 00:13:57.299 --> 00:14:05.759 So there is this framework re-presented to you and seen clearly in chapter 4. 00:14:07.159 --> 00:14:10.779 I also want you to remember the repeated stanza toward the end of the book. 00:14:10.899 --> 00:14:14.639 In those days, there was no king in Israel. 00:14:14.879 --> 00:14:18.459 Everyone did what was right in his own eyes. 00:14:18.539 --> 00:14:22.299 You see this in places like Judges 21 and verse 25. 00:14:22.299 --> 00:14:26.879 Israel needed a king. 00:14:27.859 --> 00:14:34.299 This reality is temporally fulfilled in the ascension and reign of King David. 00:14:35.379 --> 00:14:37.959 We talked about this a little bit last week. 00:14:39.019 --> 00:14:42.099 Saul was given to them as the king that they deserved, 00:14:42.319 --> 00:14:45.099 and he did not serve them well. 00:14:45.219 --> 00:14:47.039 They were meant to wait on the Lord 00:14:47.039 --> 00:14:49.860 and have the king that he intended for them to have, 00:14:49.939 --> 00:14:54.259 which we see temporal fulfillment in King David. 00:14:54.360 --> 00:14:55.500 But ultimately, 00:14:56.319 --> 00:15:03.980 we see this fulfillment in the ascension and present reign of the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:15:04.139 --> 00:15:06.240 David was always meant to show God's people 00:15:06.240 --> 00:15:08.339 a greater king that would come 00:15:08.339 --> 00:15:12.179 and have an imperishing reign. 00:15:12.179 --> 00:15:17.919 The totality of the Old Testament speaks of promises made. 00:15:18.459 --> 00:15:23.539 The totality of the New Testament speaks of promises kept. 00:15:24.539 --> 00:15:25.959 Let's not forget this morning, 00:15:26.059 --> 00:15:29.079 as we look at this story with minds toward Barak, 00:15:29.419 --> 00:15:33.979 that this book speaks loudly to us of Christ. 00:15:34.539 --> 00:15:39.099 The failings of the people are meant to show us 00:15:39.100 --> 00:15:43.379 we need a savior and a king who will reign forever. 00:15:44.920 --> 00:15:46.200 At the beginning of this chapter, 00:15:46.460 --> 00:15:49.659 after the introduction of the oppression that Israel is experiencing, 00:15:50.320 --> 00:15:51.639 we are introduced to Deborah, 00:15:51.720 --> 00:15:55.200 who is working at the task that we more readily associate 00:15:55.200 --> 00:15:57.740 with the title of judge. 00:15:58.000 --> 00:16:01.820 We see most of the judges are just coming in there slaying the enemy, 00:16:01.820 --> 00:16:03.460 but here we see her, 00:16:04.379 --> 00:16:05.220 this prophetess, 00:16:05.320 --> 00:16:06.820 this wife of Lapidoth. 00:16:06.820 --> 00:16:07.580 Lapidoth, 00:16:07.700 --> 00:16:10.260 the Hebrew actually means of Lapidoth, 00:16:10.360 --> 00:16:12.000 so maybe a city, 00:16:12.360 --> 00:16:16.020 but here it's translated the wife of Lapidoth, 00:16:16.440 --> 00:16:18.620 was judging Israel at that time. 00:16:18.720 --> 00:16:21.740 And we get some clarification on that in verse 5 00:16:21.740 --> 00:16:24.840 as she sits under a palm that's named after her, 00:16:25.240 --> 00:16:26.240 her palm tree, 00:16:26.340 --> 00:16:27.520 the palm of Deborah, 00:16:27.960 --> 00:16:29.660 between Ramah and Bethel 00:16:29.660 --> 00:16:31.760 in the hill country of Ephraim. 00:16:32.240 --> 00:16:35.860 And the people of Israel came up to her for judgment. 00:16:35.860 --> 00:16:37.740 They were coming to her and bringing her questions. 00:16:37.860 --> 00:16:41.000 Help us to settle this matter between us, 00:16:41.039 --> 00:16:43.000 and this is what she is doing. 00:16:44.019 --> 00:16:45.639 I mentioned a moment ago that in Hebrew, 00:16:45.779 --> 00:16:48.100 the name Deborah means to pronounce. 00:16:49.580 --> 00:16:50.019 Additionally, 00:16:50.120 --> 00:16:52.399 we see her called a prophetess. 00:16:53.039 --> 00:16:55.419 And I think the significance of the name 00:16:55.419 --> 00:16:57.639 and the role are made evident to us 00:16:57.639 --> 00:17:00.340 in the next two verses. 00:17:01.019 --> 00:17:03.240 Notice what she does at the beginning of verse 6. 00:17:03.240 --> 00:17:05.920 She sent and summoned Barak, 00:17:06.480 --> 00:17:08.900 the son of Abinoam from Kadesh Naphtali. 00:17:09.299 --> 00:17:12.960 She brings him to her and says
