conference. 00:00:27.460 --> 00:00:32.179 So this is going to be a gospel-focused, gospel-driven message. 00:00:32.480 --> 00:00:35.600 In Acts chapter 10, we have a long chapter. 00:00:35.780 --> 00:00:38.120 Chapter 10 has about 50 verses. 00:00:38.380 --> 00:00:43.579 We're going to read verses 1 to 8 and then verses 34 to 43. 00:00:44.179 --> 00:00:46.480 So if you would, listen to God's word. 00:00:48.460 --> 00:00:55.760 At Caesarea, there was a man named Cornelius, a centurion of what was known as the Italian cohort. 00:00:55.759 --> 00:01:00.960 Devout men who feared God were with all his household. 00:01:01.179 --> 00:01:04.959 They gave alms generously to the people and prayed continually to God. 00:01:05.079 --> 00:01:11.859 About the ninth hour of the day, he saw clearly in a vision an angel of God come to him and say, 00:01:11.979 --> 00:01:12.640 Cornelius. 00:01:12.640 --> 00:01:15.840 And he stared at him in terror and said, What is it, Lord? 00:01:17.060 --> 00:01:21.099 And he said, Your prayers and alms have ascended as a memorial before God. 00:01:21.159 --> 00:01:26.140 And now send to Joppa and bring one Simon, who is called Peter. 00:01:26.340 --> 00:01:32.560 He is lodging with another Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. 00:01:32.560 --> 00:01:39.379 When the angel who spoke to him had departed, he called two of his servants and a his sermon. 00:02:02.759 --> 00:02:07.739 So Peter opened his mouth and said, Truly, I understand. 00:02:08.300 --> 00:02:11.439 Could be translated, truly, I now get it. 00:02:12.699 --> 00:02:16.740 Truly, I understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation, 00:02:16.979 --> 00:02:20.759 anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. 00:02:20.759 --> 00:02:28.099 And as for the word that he sent to Israel, preaching good news of peace through Jesus Christ, 00:02:28.199 --> 00:02:28.899 he is Lord of all. 00:02:28.959 --> 00:02:33.219 You yourselves know what years, I felt sorry for Goldfish, living in that tiny little bowl about 12 by 10 inches, 00:03:57.439 --> 00:04:03.660 around and around and around they go, looking at the same plastic pirate ship, 00:04:04.240 --> 00:04:07.660 the same treasure chest, the same sunken palm tree. 00:04:08.580 --> 00:04:13.900 The tedium, the tedium must be soul-crushing, I thought. 00:04:13.900 --> 00:04:22.439 And then I read a report, some scientists who studied the memories of carp, also known as goldfish, 00:04:22.680 --> 00:04:26.600 and they ascertained that except for the question of where food comes from, 00:04:27.040 --> 00:04:31.019 they have a memory, functional memory of three seconds, 00:04:31.680 --> 00:04:37.639 which means that the trip around the goldfish bowl is endlessly thrilling. are on the counter. 00:05:12.939 --> 00:05:23.640 We forget much more important things, including the gospel, including, well, 00:05:23.639 --> 00:05:28.300 not just my wife and I, but Peter. 00:05:28.919 --> 00:05:29.879 You noticed it. 00:05:29.939 --> 00:05:32.519 I said, now I understand. 00:05:32.639 --> 00:05:33.219 Now I get it. 00:05:33.339 --> 00:05:38.079 Peter says, now I understand the gospel. 00:05:38.199 --> 00:05:39.759 As if he'd forgotten the gospel. 00:05:39.879 --> 00:05:41.519 In fact, he had forgotten the gospel. 00:05:42.319 --> 00:05:45.759 And God reminded 00:06:00.099 And then how he coordinates mission between Cornelius the centurion and Peter the apostle. 00:06:00.339 --> 00:06:01.719 He's called Simon in this passage. 00:06:01.720 --> 00:06:04.400 And then the need to answer the call. 00:06:04.580 --> 00:06:09.840 And then the stirring of passion proven by the gift of the Holy Spirit in the middle of a sermon. 00:06:10.600 --> 00:06:13.480 And I hope we live in joy in the gospel. 00:06:14.680 --> 00:06:15.640 So here's the story. 00:06:16.080 --> 00:06:18.520 There is a man named Cornelius. 00:06:18.900 --> 00:06:20.240 He is praying. 00:06:20.400 --> 00:06:22.140 He lives in a city called Caesarea. 00:06:22.240 --> 00:06:23.340 There's two Caesareas in Israel. 00:06:23.420 --> 00:06:24.660 We talked about the other one last night. 00:06:24.780 --> 00:06:26.640 This is maritime Caesarea. 00:06:27.440 --> 00:06:29.820 And there is an Italian cohort. 00:06:29.819 --> 00:06:31.980 That means there are Roman soldiers. 00:06:32.139 --> 00:06:33.540 That means there's an occupying force. 00:06:33.639 --> 00:06:40.920 It means that Cornelius is part of the occupying force from Rome to dominate Israel. 00:06:41.639 --> 00:06:43.079 He's not a popular guy. 00:06:43.860 --> 00:06:49.199 But somehow some person spoke to him about the God of Israel. 00:06:49.819 --> 00:06:50.980 And he became intrigued. 00:06:51.439 --> 00:06:53.060 And he began to follow the God of Israel. 00:06:53.339 --> 00:06:58.039 That's what it means when it says he's God-fearing, some translations say. 00:06:58.040 --> 00:07:01.220 He is obeying the law of God. 00:07:01.319 --> 00:07:02.340 He's serving God alone. 00:07:02.480 --> 00:07:06.100 But he is, we would say in our day today, he's not fully committed. 00:07:06.200 --> 00:07:13.040 Because you see, to be fully committed to Israel, you had to get circumcised if you're a male and follow the food laws. 00:07:13.300 --> 00:07:15.960 And you also had to avoid association with Gentiles. 00:07:16.020 --> 00:07:17.800 That means he would have to give up his job. 00:07:17.860 --> 00:07:19.140 And he wasn't willing to do that. 00:07:19.320 --> 00:07:20.540 He worshipped God. 00:07:20.600 --> 00:07:21.439 He prayed to God. 00:07:21.439 --> 00:07:24.639 And yet he was holding back a little bit. 00:07:25.160 --> 00:07:25.980 And he was praying. 00:07:27.100 --> 00:07:32.060 And as he prays, in fear of God, God says, I'm hearing your prayers. 00:07:33.259 --> 00:07:35.480 And he sends an angel. 00:07:36.759 --> 00:07:37.459 Terrifies him. 00:07:37.459 --> 00:07:41.000 But the angel says, your prayers have ascended. 00:07:41.180 --> 00:07:42.199 And now I have a word for you. 00:07:42.239 --> 00:07:48.180 I want you to send some men to Joppa, which is about 30 miles, walking about a two-day journey. 00:07:48.699 --> 00:07:49.639 Four days altogether. 00:07:50.680 --> 00:07:54.120 And find a man named Simon who's called Peter. 00:07:54.240 --> 00:07:56.799 He's living by the sea with a tanner. 00:07:57.539 --> 00:07:59.699 By the way, a tanner is not somebody who owns tanning beds. 00:07:59.699 --> 00:08:05.899 It's somebody who takes care of animal skins, which is kind of dirty work. 00:08:06.939 --> 00:08:10.240 And work Jews were supposed to stay away from. 00:08:11.180 --> 00:08:15.959 So Peter has been bending the rules maybe a little bit. 00:08:16.939 --> 00:08:18.819 Cornelius listens. 00:08:19.659 --> 00:08:24.579 And he says to two of his soldiers and another devout person, go find Simon Peter. 00:08:24.659 --> 00:08:25.959 I'd love to hear how it went. 00:08:26.639 --> 00:08:28.219 There's a man named Simon Peter. 00:08:28.220 --> 00:08:29.000 Don't know who he is. 00:08:29.080 --> 00:08:31.600 Don't know why he's important. 00:08:31.780 --> 00:08:32.840 But you're supposed to bring him here. 00:08:32.879 --> 00:08:33.840 You're supposed to say something. 00:08:33.960 --> 00:08:34.879 I don't know what. 00:08:35.519 --> 00:08:36.019 Go does Peter. 00:08:59.819 --> 00:09:02.399 And the two work together. 00:09:02.759 --> 00:09:05.000 God is coordinating things. 00:09:05.339 --> 00:09:07.299 And it's around lunchtime. 00:09:07.439 --> 00:09:09.439 And Peter goes to the roof to pray. 00:09:09.519 --> 00:09:10.319 It was probably a hot day. 00:09:10.379 --> 00:09:13.019 He went to the roof to get out of the heat in the house. 00:09:13.379 --> 00:09:14.099 And he's hungry. 00:09:14.179 --> 00:09:15.639 And people are preparing food downstairs. 00:09:15.819 --> 00:09:18.979 And God uses this hunger of his to give him a vision. 00:09:18.980 --> 00:09:24.920 And in this vision, something like a sheep, a large sheep comes down from heaven. 00:09:25.440 --> 00:09:27.200 And there are all kinds of animals on it. 00:09:27.700 --> 00:09:30.539 And a voice from heaven says, rise Peter, kill and eat. 00:09:30.700 --> 00:09:33.659 And Peter says what any good Jew would say. 00:09:34.360 --> 00:09:35.920 I question this voice. 00:09:36.860 --> 00:09:39.320 Because it's telling me to break the commands of God. 00:09:40.039 --> 00:09:42.460 Which say we can't eat shellfish and we can't eat pork. 00:09:43.460 --> 00:09:46.540 And Peter has never eaten pork. 00:09:46.639 --> 00:09:47.420 He's never eaten bacon. 00:09:47.500 --> 00:09:48.759 We may feel sorry for him. 00:09:49.259 --> 00:09:50.700 Because it tastes good. 00:09:51.639 --> 00:09:55.660 But he was willing to say no to his appetites for the sake of the Lord. 00:09:56.840 --> 00:09:57.800 And never. 00:09:58.639 --> 00:09:59.639 God says, okay, fine. 00:09:59.940 --> 00:10:01.200 I'll send that vision again. 00:10:01.879 --> 00:10:03.580 And again, rise Peter, kill and eat. 00:10:03.660 --> 00:10:05.139 Again, he says, I can't. 00:10:05.460 --> 00:10:08.040 And then again, the vision comes a third time. 00:10:08.580 --> 00:10:09.660 Rise Peter, kill and eat. 00:10:09.960 --> 00:10:10.220 Nope. 00:10:11.220 --> 00:10:12.040 I can't do it. 00:10:12.039 --> 00:10:19.939 And finally at the end, the Lord says, do not call anything impure that God has made clean. 00:10:21.139 --> 00:10:22.019 That's the lesson. 00:10:22.699 --> 00:10:25.240 You're calling it impure, but I'm calling it pure. 00:10:25.339 --> 00:10:31.019 This, by the way, is really in a way one of the great motives for missions. 00:10:31.159 --> 00:10:32.539 There is no place. 00:10:32.659 --> 00:10:33.519 There is no people. 00:10:33.679 --> 00:10:35.399 There is no race that is impure. 00:10:35.399 --> 00:10:42.480 Everybody is pure or has the opportunity to become pure through Christ. 00:10:43.199 --> 00:10:44.559 And so Peter is rebuked. 00:10:44.779 --> 00:10:48.459 There is, Jesus said, nothing that goes into a man that makes him unclean. 00:10:48.559 --> 00:10:50.079 Those laws are gone. 00:10:50.639 --> 00:10:53.059 And God is coordinating these two visions. 00:10:53.059 --> 00:11:01.799 It's because, verses 17 to 23 now, because as the vision ends, Peter is silent. 00:11:01.959 --> 00:11:03.939 He's wondering what this might mean. 00:11:04.119 --> 00:11:08.259 And at that very moment, the men from Cornelius arrive at his door. 00:11:08.659 --> 00:11:10.859 This is a marvel of God's providence, isn't it? 00:11:11.439 --> 00:11:15.279 You know, they didn't have, you understand, they didn't have Google Maps in those days. 00:11:16.159 --> 00:11:20.759 And they couldn't punch in the address of Simon the Tanner and say, okay, we're going to, you know, 00:11:20.860 --> 00:11:23.799 your phone just telling you, we'll arrive at 1138. 00:11:23.939 --> 00:11:25.319 They had no idea when they would arrive. 00:11:25.399 --> 00:11:29.299 They'd just go to the city center and say, are there any tanners around here? 00:11:29.379 --> 00:11:30.299 Is there one named Simon? 00:11:30.379 --> 00:11:31.500 Is he prone to have guests? 00:11:31.500 --> 00:11:35.699 And so they just arrived in God's providence at that moment. 00:11:37.779 --> 00:11:43.279 And it says in verses 19 to 20, when as they arrive, the Spirit tells Peter, 00:11:43.279 --> 00:11:50.319 there are visitors coming, go down and accompany them without hesitation, for I have sent them. 00:11:50.339 --> 00:11:52.659 And he goes down, he says, I'm the one you're looking for. 00:11:53.000 --> 00:11:54.100 Why have you come? 00:11:55.139 --> 00:11:58.399 And they had to pause. 00:11:58.919 --> 00:12:00.279 How are we going to say this? 00:12:01.319 --> 00:12:07.240 We have come from Cornelius the Centurion. 00:12:09.819 --> 00:12:11.740 That's a frightening way to begin. 00:12:11.740 --> 00:12:16.720 That's like saying, we've come from Joe the Gestapo captain. 00:12:19.539 --> 00:12:23.799 Nobody wants to hear that a centurion is summoning you. 00:12:24.600 --> 00:12:26.039 This can only mean trouble. 00:12:27.639 --> 00:12:31.360 But they quickly add, this centurion is different. 00:12:31.500 --> 00:12:32.220 He is pious. 00:12:32.320 --> 00:12:33.139 He's a man of God. 00:12:33.220 --> 00:12:34.500 He's a God-fearing man. 00:12:34.500 --> 00:12:39.299 And the words are still ringing in Peter's ears. 00:12:39.639 --> 00:12:41.000 Don't hesitate to go with these men. 00:12:41.120 --> 00:12:42.419 And so Peter has to be thinking, aha. 00:12:43.779 --> 00:12:45.519 Now, everybody knows what's going on here. 00:12:46.299 --> 00:12:48.820 The centurion is a man who is unclean. 00:12:48.960 --> 00:12:49.820 He's a warrior. 00:12:50.080 --> 00:12:51.240 He is a Gentile. 00:12:51.320 --> 00:12:53.019 A Jew can't go into the house of a Gentile. 00:12:53.919 --> 00:12:56.059 The centurion knows what he's asking Peter. 00:12:56.200 --> 00:12:57.799 Peter knows what he's being asked to do. 00:12:57.799 --> 00:13:01.740 Everybody knows how tense and what a violation this is. 00:13:02.699 --> 00:13:05.319 And Peter takes the first step and he says, come on into my house. 00:13:05.359 --> 00:13:08.819 Even that is marginally illicit. 00:13:09.459 --> 00:13:13.839 Come into my house, you Gentiles, you centurion family people. 00:13:14.479 --> 00:13:15.379 And they come into the house. 00:13:15.500 --> 00:13:16.240 They spend the night. 00:13:16.579 --> 00:13:24.500 And the next day, Peter and some of his friends get up and go as God commanded. 00:13:24.500 --> 00:13:26.519 They walk two days. 00:13:27.740 --> 00:13:29.639 And when they arrive, Peter greets them. 00:13:29.759 --> 00:13:33.759 Sorry, Cornelius greets them and bows down as if he's an angel. 00:13:34.320 --> 00:13:36.779 And Peter sees the crowd and he sees Cornelius. 00:13:36.860 --> 00:13:37.659 He says, no, no, get up. 00:13:37.700 --> 00:13:38.460 I'm just a man. 00:13:38.580 --> 00:13:40.440 I'm just a man like you are. 00:13:40.879 --> 00:13:48.919 And I just, I want to encourage you to think about what it took for Cornelius to get, 00:13:49.000 --> 00:13:51.820 as the passage says, all of his friends and relatives there. 00:13:52.320 --> 00:13:54.019 Can you imagine the invitation went out? 00:13:54.840 --> 00:13:57.320 There is a man named Peter who's going to be coming to our house. 00:13:57.399 --> 00:13:58.440 Don't know who he is. 00:13:59.860 --> 00:14:01.340 Don't know what he has to say. 00:14:03.740 --> 00:14:05.139 Don't know when he's going to arrive. 00:14:05.139 --> 00:14:10.299 I'll provide all the food you need to stay all day so you're here when he arrives. 00:14:11.299 --> 00:14:19.340 That's the kind of invitation, to be candid, that is born of great faith and enthusiasm for the faith. 00:14:19.340 --> 00:14:23.399 And I pray that there is that here. 00:14:24.399 --> 00:14:32.340 A faith, a belief that my friends, my family need to hear what is being said by God's messengers. 00:14:32.340 --> 00:14:37.420 That's where mission begins, in the local church. 00:14:38.160 --> 00:14:39.660 You know, this is a missions conference. 00:14:39.800 --> 00:14:45.200 And I tell you, it's beautiful to care about missions in Peru and Ireland and South Sudan and India. 00:14:45.200 --> 00:14:50.480 And a real heart for mission certainly starts here with your people and your friends. 00:14:51.220 --> 00:14:55.759 You can't really love people 10,000 miles away if you don't love your neighbor. 00:14:55.759 --> 00:15:00.939 And if you don't love the gospel enough to tell your family and your friends and your coworkers, 00:15:02.019 --> 00:15:10.759 I don't know how there's going to be enough love to send people to Kazakhstan or wherever you send them. 00:15:11.720 --> 00:15:16.439 So Peter meets Cornelius, a man who wants to hear from God. 00:15:16.440 --> 00:15:24.160 And when he gets there, he says, so why did you send for me? 00:15:24.620 --> here? 00:15:48.420 --> 00:15:51.639 I think, Peter, why do you think you're here? 00:15:52.100 --> 00:15:53.080 You're an apostle. 00:15:53.940 --> 00:15:57.519 Your job is to go to Jerusalem, Judea, and the uttermost parts of the earth. 00:15:57.600 --> 00:15:58.080 And guess what? 00:15:58.120 --> 00:16:00.759 The uttermost parts of the earth are coming to you, for goodness sakes. 00:16:02.399 --> 00:16:08.980 And so we want to laugh at Peter because he seems to have forgotten. 00:16:09.060 --> 00:16:09.759 He's gold fishing. 00:16:10.300 --> 00:16:12.480 He's forgotten what he's supposed Cornelius is patient. 00:16:20.420 --> 00:16:22.680 He says to him, now we're in verses 30 to 33, 00:16:23.320 --> 00:16:29.120 look, an angel came and said to send for you. 00:16:29.200 -->
