in every route, you have a guidebook and you look at it and you know the rating. 00:01:41.300 --> 00:01:43.740 You know, this is a little harder than what I've done before. 00:01:43.840 --> 00:02:54.740 We've been climbing throughout our Scriptures. 00:02:55.040 --> 00:02:58.319 We've seen God create the world and original sin. 00:02:58.740 --> 00:03:04.659 We've seen Him destroy the world except a remnant of people and animals through the flood. 00:03:05.200 --> 00:03:06.600 We've seen the Tower of Babel. 00:03:06.599 --> 00:03:13.560 We've seen the captivity in Egypt of the Israelites, the exodus, all the plagues, the exodus. 00:03:14.039 --> 00:03:18.780 We've seen 40 years in the desert, the giving of the Mosaic Law, the temple being built. 00:03:19.340 --> has left us guilty. 00:03:43.400 --> 00:03:50.680 He starts out laying out a very careful case that all men are guilt. 00:03:50.780 --> 00:03:55.280 We're all under just condemnation, both Gentile and Jew. 00:03:55.680 --> 00:03:58.879 He begins kind of his thesis statement in chapter 1, verse 16. 00:03:59.000 --> 00:03:59.439 He says, 00:03:59.819 --> 00:04:04.980 The gospel is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. 00:04:05.680 --> 00:04:09.280 And he goes on to show us how everyone needs to place their faith in Christ 00:04:09.280 --> 00:04:15.400 because everyone is justly condemned, those without the law and those with the law. 00:04:16.660 --> 00:04:22.459 The last passage in chapter 3, he fires off a bunch of Old Testament quotations for us. 00:04:22.819 --> world knows. 00:04:38.920 --> 00:04:40.379 We all know that we're guilty. 00:04:40.500 --> 00:04:45.220 We all carry within us this sense that we haven't lived rightly, 00:04:45.420 --> 00:04:49.639 that we deserve some kind of condemnation for the way that we live. 00:04:50.199 --> 00:04:55.639 And I think we know that that doesn't just extend horizontally, but it also extends vertically. 00:04:55.639 --> 00:05:01.839 We know that it's not just that we sin against our fellow man and we should be judged by our fellow man, 00:05:01.959 --> 00:05:08.419 but that we've transgressed some kind of greater law and we deserve the wrath and judgment of God. 00:05:09.180 --> 00:05:14.060 If you look in verse 19 and 20, I just want you to see two phrases there, 00:05:14.919 --> 00:05:21.839 that we'll be held accountable to God and that no human being will be justified in His sight. 00:05:21.839 --> 00:05:27.659 And that's the great tragedy of sin, that we've offended God. 00:05:27.739 against you and you only have I sinned. 00:06:10.439 --> 00:06:12.519 That kind of seems like an audacious claim, doesn't it? 00:06:13.719 --> 00:06:16.579 It seems that He reduces everything that He's done. 00:06:16.899 --> 00:06:19.859 He's really sinned against the entire nation of Israel as their king. 00:06:19.860 --> 00:06:23.860 He's reduced all of that to say, against you only have I vices into virtues, 00:07:17.100 --> 00:07:21.280 such as greed and intimidation and self-exaltation. 00:07:21.620 --> 00:07:25.180 Our culture is about that, about justifying sinful acts, legal and illegal, 00:07:34.779 --> 00:07:37.979 things just to kind of numb the pain of living. 00:07:38.679 --> 00:07:41.419 We wrap ourselves up in things like TV, 00:07:42.239 --> 00:07:44.159 social activities, and sports, 00:07:44.639 --> 00:07:48.899 to occupy our minds with other things than the guilt, 00:07:49.359 --> 00:07:52.759 just so that we won't let in that deafening sound of silence, 00:07:52.859 --> 00:07:55.339 as Simon and Garfunkel talked about. 00:07:55.339 --> 00:07:58.500 We're afraid that if we stop for just a moment, 00:07:59.159 --> 00:08:02.859 we might hear the condemnation that's upon us. 00:08:03.879 --> 00:08:06.219 And most divisive among all of them, 00:08:06.399 --> 00:08:08.199 we cope with things with religion. 00:08:08.719 --> 00:08:10.159 number of times a day, 00:08:24.819 --> 00:08:27.099 if we're really careful about stepping on grasshoppers, 00:08:27.180 --> 00:08:30.240 if we follow a man's written code, 00:08:30.560 --> 00:08:31.360 that we're okay. 00:08:31.500 --> 00:08:32.639 We're going to be all right. 00:08:32.740 --> 00:08:36.980 We're going to achieve a higher level of understanding, 00:08:37.100 --> 00:08:40.039 or we're not going to be judged for our actions. 00:08:41.179 --> 00:08:42.639 But none of these coping mechanisms, 00:08:42.819 --> 00:08:46.159 none of these things actually get rid of
