maintained, 00:00:37.100 --> 00:00:43.620 and I've found myself at times struggling to not fall into despair. 00:00:44.840 --> 00:00:48.840 I find myself crying like the man who cried out to Jesus. 00:00:49.740 --> 00:00:52.900 I believe help my unbelief. 00:00:52.899 --> 00:01:00.019 I think that's a common struggle that we may be facing in our world today 00:01:00.019 --> 00:01:01.700 and in our lives in general, 00:01:02.179 --> 00:01:07.780 and maybe particularly in this most unusual season that we are in. 00:01:09.159 --> 00:01:11.680 As we come to the end of the book of Luke, 00:01:11.739 --> 00:01:13.019 this is the end of our series, 00:01:13.120 --> 00:01:17.739 we come to a situation where the disciples are believing and not believing as well. 00:01:17.739 --> 00:01:23.640 We saw last week that Jesus met with some of the disciples 00:01:23.640 --> 00:01:27.859 as they were walking away from Jerusalem in despair and discouragement. 00:01:29.099 --> 00:01:32.479 And as he met with them, he revealed himself to them, 00:01:32.539 --> 00:01:36.459 and he opened their eyes to see that he indeed was risen from the dead. 00:01:36.579 --> 00:01:39.039 And so we see in Luke 24, 34, 00:01:39.259 --> 00:01:41.239 that he returns, 00:01:41.239 --> 00:01:45.039 or that these disciples returned to Jerusalem 00:01:45.039 --> 00:01:47.699 to talk to the 12 apostles and the disciples, 00:01:47.699 --> 00:01:49.959 and they're all together saying, 00:01:50.459 --> 00:01:52.099 the Lord is risen indeed. 00:01:54.539 --> 00:01:57.019 So believing, they're rejoicing. 00:01:57.919 --> 00:02:00.299 And yet Jesus is not done with them, 00:02:00.319 --> 00:02:02.140 and he has more for them. 00:02:02.199 --> 00:02:05.500 And this is the passage that we're going to look at this morning. 00:02:06.379 --> 00:02:08.340 They believe, and yet they don't believe. 00:02:08.340 --> 00:02:14.980 And as he reveals himself to them in that context, 00:02:15.840 --> 00:02:17.439 he anchors them in their faith, 00:02:17.780 --> 00:02:20.340 and he launches them out into the world 00:02:20.340 --> 00:02:24.480 to be witnesses to him as a resurrected Savior. the proclamation of his name 00:05:58.060 --> 00:05:59.180 and the work that he does 00:05:59.180 --> 00:06:00.439 in building his church. 00:06:00.439 --> 00:06:04.079 But here we see Jesus 00:06:04.079 --> 00:06:06.719 at this last section, 00:06:07.600 --> 00:06:11.100 anchoring his followers 00:06:11.100 --> 00:06:13.100 in a truth that cannot be denied 00:06:13.100 --> 00:06:15.519 and launching his followers 00:06:15.519 --> 00:06:16.420 into a mission 00:06:16.420 --> 00:06:18.800 that will consume their lives. 00:06:19.699 --> 00:06:21.439 So let's look at those two things 00:06:21.439 --> 00:06:23.159 in order, a truth to be anchored 00:06:23.159 --> 00:06:25.360 and then a mission to be launched into. 00:06:26.459 --> 00:06:30.060 First, we're going to look at 24, 36 through 47, 00:06:30.060 --> 00:06:31.839 a truth to be anchored in. 00:06:33.420 --> 00:06:38.500 The truth is that Jesus really did rise from the dead. 00:06:40.500 --> 00:06:42.740 And they become eyewitnesses of this 00:06:42.740 --> 00:06:45.600 as they see him in his resurrection body. 00:06:46.060 --> 00:06:47.560 Now, it's a fascinating story 00:06:47.560 --> 00:06:49.800 because we've already seen Jesus appear to people. 00:06:49.899 --> 00:06:50.779 He's appeared to Mary. 00:06:51.220 --> 00:06:53.100 He's appeared to Clopas. 00:06:53.100 --> 00:06:56.160 Peter went and saw the empty tomb. 00:06:56.260 --> 00:06:57.340 There are a number of people 00:06:57.340 --> 00:06:59.560 who have already have real evidence 00:06:59.560 --> 00:07:01.820 of Jesus rising from the dead 00:07:01.820 --> 00:07:03.960 and they have all gathered back together 00:07:03.960 --> 00:07:06.100 and they're trading these accounts 00:07:06.100 --> 00:07:07.400 and they're comparing them. 00:07:07.740 --> 00:07:09.760 And it seemed, as we said in verse 34, 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:11.439 that they did believe it. 00:07:13.240 --> 00:07:16.520 And yet, Jesus then shows up in their midst 00:07:16.519 --> 00:07:22.939 and as is not unexpected 00:07:22.939 --> 00:07:25.959 because no one had ever seen someone 00:07:25.959 --> 00:07:27.879 be raised from the dead like this before. 00:07:28.939 --> 00:07:30.439 They didn't believe it. 00:07:31.180 --> 00:07:32.959 Jesus steps into the midst of them 00:07:32.959 --> 00:07:34.359 and he knows their response 00:07:34.359 --> 00:07:36.259 and so he says, peace be with you. 00:07:36.620 --> 00:07:37.539 Don't be afraid. 00:07:37.540 --> 00:07:42.080 And yet, they are afraid. 00:07:42.200 --> 00:07:43.780 They think they've seen a ghost. 00:07:44.080 --> 00:07:45.360 They think they've seen a spirit 00:07:45.360 --> 00:07:47.280 because this was all that they could imagine. 00:07:47.600 --> 00:07:50.840 If coming back 00:09:07.460 just recently where he had gained these scars 00:09:07.460 --> 00:09:10.120 that would be on his physical body forever, 00:09:11.080 --> 00:09:12.980 remembering his death for them. 00:09:12.980 --> 00:09:17.220 This is not just a vision of a spirit, 00:09:17.340 --> 00:09:18.320 but this is Jesus, 00:09:18.460 --> 00:09:20.519 the real one who hung on the cross, 00:09:21.620 --> 00:09:22.860 risen again. 00:09:26.120 --> 00:09:27.039 It's remarkable. 00:09:28.120 --> 00:09:29.539 And they believe, 00:09:30.580 --> 00:09:33.039 and yet there's this great phrase in verse 39, and celebrate with them, 00:09:54.719 --> 00:09:56.279 and the rest of us were, 00:09:56.379 --> 00:09:57.459 you know, 00:09:57.559 --> 00:09:59.480 off living in other parts of the country. 00:12:09.639 where this is the basic storyline 00:12:09.639 --> 00:12:11.299 of the life of Jesus, 00:12:11.579 --> 00:12:13.759 that he came to suffer and to die 00:12:13.759 --> 00:12:15.699 and then to rise again. 00:12:15.700 --> 00:12:18.140 And Jesus says, 00:12:18.360 --> 00:12:19.400 this is what I've told you 00:12:19.400 --> 00:12:20.740 all along. 00:12:21.500 --> 00:12:22.800 This is what the Old Testament 00:12:22.800 --> 00:12:23.600 is talking about 00:12:23.600 --> 00:12:25.160 when he says in verse 44, 00:12:25.300 --> 00:12:26.100 the law of Moses 00:12:26.100 --> 00:12:27.600 and the prophets and the Psalms. 00:12:27.759 --> 00:12:29.520 Those aren't particular books 00:12:29.520 --> 00:12:30.160 of the Bible. 00:12:30.480 --> 00:12:31.740 He's actually using did in the world 00:12:53.079 --> 00:12:54.279 in establishing the kingdom 00:12:54.279 --> 00:12:55.839 of Israel. 00:12:56.519 --> 00:12:57.579 And then the Psalms 00:12:57.579 --> 00:12:58.500
