very beautiful world. 00:00:44.420 --> 00:00:51.079 And there are many times that we stop and we take note of wonderful things that happen. 00:00:51.260 --> 00:00:53.719 Sometimes we are aware of the beauty. 00:00:54.060 --> 00:00:55.620 Sometimes we see beautiful sunsets. 00:00:55.619 --> 00:01:01.939 Sometimes we can be driving along and we don't have to go anywhere further than our own island 00:01:01.939 --> 00:01:06.179 to admire some of the beauties of creation. 00:01:07.120 --> 00:01:10.359 And we're able to say, well it is, it's a wonderful world. 00:01:11.359 --> 00:01:12.920 And we enjoy many things. 00:01:13.060 --> 00:01:18.079 There are many exciting times, many inspirational times, many wonderful times 00:01:18.079 --> 00:01:24.840 that we have enjoyed throughout different experiences, different situations and such like. 00:01:25.620 --> 00:01:31.880 And yet our text shows us that the people that the apostle is talking about 00:01:31.880 --> 00:01:35.960 are people who were looking for another country. 00:01:36.980 --> 00:01:41.000 The country, this world, was a world that didn't satisfy them. 00:01:41.800 --> 00:01:43.960 They were looking for someone better. 00:01:43.959 --> 00:01:50.179 And while they had, there's no doubt about it, many blessings and many favors, 00:01:51.139 --> 00:01:53.639 this world did not ultimately satisfy. 00:01:54.539 --> 00:01:59.479 The way that this world was going, the way that, or what this world lived for, 00:01:59.979 --> 00:02:01.939 was not ultimately what they lived for. 00:02:02.319 --> 00:02:04.299 They were looking for something else. 00:02:04.299 --> 00:02:12.060 And if you're a Christian here tonight, you can identify with what these patriarchs of old were like. 00:02:13.039 --> 00:02:16.379 Because you can understand a wee bit of these things. 00:02:16.560 --> 00:02:19.900 You see, the apostle has been writing about these patriarchs, 00:02:19.979 --> 00:02:21.479 Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. 00:02:21.479 --> 00:02:26.939 And although they had been promised the land of Canaan, 00:02:27.219 --> 00:02:30.939 they were told, remember how it was promised to first to Abraham and then to Isaac, 00:02:31.259 --> 00:02:32.959 promised to Abraham and his descendants, 00:02:33.459 --> 00:02:35.579 promised to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. 00:02:36.439 --> 00:02:39.019 And yet all the time, throughout their lifetime, 00:02:39.179 --> 00:02:42.479 they lived in that land as pilgrims and strangers. 00:02:43.939 --> 00:02:47.639 They weren't able to actually call it their own land. 00:02:48.079 --> 00:02:50.120 That was something that was to come later on. 00:02:50.120 --> 00:02:55.340 And all the time they lived, they were, as we say, living like pilgrims and strangers. 00:02:55.759 --> 00:02:57.840 There's a great example of that. 00:02:58.200 --> 00:03:02.300 Remember when Sarah, Abraham's beloved wife, died. 00:03:04.400 --> 00:03:09.020 Abraham didn't even own a stone of that land. 00:03:09.560 --> 00:03:10.520 None of that land. 00:03:10.599 --> 00:03:12.219 Although God said, this is your land. 00:03:13.620 --> 00:03:17.580 Remember, he couldn't just go and bury Sarah. 00:03:17.580 --> 00:03:25.060 He had to buy a plot of land in order for him to bury his wife. 00:03:26.140 --> 00:03:27.200 Didn't own any of it. 00:03:28.080 --> 00:03:32.160 And yet God had promised him, this is all going to be your land. 00:03:33.200 --> 00:03:36.220 And the amazing thing is that there was no disappointment in the life of, 00:03:36.680 --> 00:03:41.200 in the whole lifetime of Abraham regarding this promise. 00:03:41.199 --> 00:03:46.780 Because he was seeing, yes, that God would fulfill exactly what he said. 00:03:47.459 --> 00:03:50.339 But he was also looking way beyond. 00:03:51.079 --> 00:03:55.539 Because he was seeing the heavenly city that he was traveling to. 00:03:56.179 --> 00:04:02.419 And we read there that it's the heavenly one who's builder and maker is God. 00:04:02.419 --> 00:04:09.679 So in Abraham's life, in Isaac's life, in Jacob's life, there was a refusal to look back. 00:04:10.459 --> 00:04:16.379 And all the time there was this progression, this moving forward, looking ahead. 00:04:17.459 --> 00:04:20.939 And that is the way the believer goes in life as well. 00:04:21.319 --> 00:04:23.159 We don't spend our life looking back. 00:04:23.719 --> 00:04:25.839 We spend our life looking forward. 00:04:26.099 --> 00:04:27.219 It's all ahead. 00:04:27.220 --> 00:04:30.520 You see, Abraham, way back, had been a very wealthy man. 00:04:31.500 --> 00:04:34.500 And he lived, he had an inheritance in Ur of the Chaldees. 00:04:34.540 --> 00:04:35.420 That was his place. 00:04:36.700 --> 00:04:39.060 And you remember how God came to him and called him out. 00:04:40.220 --> 00:04:42.340 And God called Abraham to leave everything. 00:04:43.420 --> 00:04:45.800 He had to leave his homeland, his inheritance. 00:04:46.520 --> 00:04:47.460 He had to leave everything. 00:04:47.580 --> 00:04:49.980 And God said, I'm going to take you out from here. 00:04:49.980 --> 00:04:58.040 He called him out, and I'm going to show you a land that will become your land, which will belong to you and to all your descendants. 00:04:58.240 --> 00:05:03.540 And he promised Abraham a great future and that he would be the father of many. 00:05:04.060 --> 00:05:06.879 And, of course, Abraham spiritually is the father of the faithful. 00:05:06.879 --> 00:05:13.659 And, of course, also of, you could say, of the whole Jewish race. 00:05:14.699 --> 00:05:25.139 And, in fact, we could almost, we could say of the Arabic race as well, because that's where we know of Isaac and Ishmael. 00:05:25.540 --> 00:05:28.439 There was this division that took place there. 00:05:29.779 --> 00:05:34.800 And at no time do we find Abraham along the years saying, oh, I wish I hadn't left her. 00:05:34.800 --> 00:05:36.780 I was far better off I had a settled place every day. 00:05:45.639 --> 00:05:48.400 I was in the same place, and life was easy. 00:05:48.480 --> 00:05:52.040 But now here I am every day, every year. 00:05:52.120 --> 00:06:10.200 --> 00:06:11.320 The past was past. 00:06:11.900 --> 00:06:17.860 Out of the Chaldees, as far as he was concerned, was the city of destruction, like in Pilgrim's Progress. 00:06:18.379 --> 00:06:20.540 It was the place he had been delivered from. 00:06:20.860 --> 00:06:22.160 God had called him out. 00:06:22.160 --> 00:06:28.960 And even though Lot, remember how Lot went to Sodom, Abraham would have nothing to do. 00:06:29.020 --> 00:06:35.020 Although he prayed for Lot and Sodom, Abraham would have nothing to do with Sodom. 00:06:36.320 --> 00:06:42.200 Remember when Lot and his wife and some of the family were delivered from Sodom. 00:06:42.199 --> 00:06:46.240 It tells us that Lot's wife looked back. 00:06:46.300 --> 00:06:49.680 Although she was taken out of Sodom, Sodom wasn't taken out of her. 00:06:50.719 --> 00:06:52.279 Sodom was deep in her heart. 00:06:52.899 --> 00:06:55.339 And she was looking back longingly, fondly. 00:06:55.420 --> 00:06:56.399 That's my place. 00:06:56.719 --> 00:06:57.699 These are my people. 00:06:57.819 --> 00:06:59.779 And remember, she perished. 00:07:01.060 --> 00:07:04.800 Because she was not like Lot, who looked ahead. ruler who came to Jesus. 00:07:15.400 --> 00:07:17.420 A very, very promising young man. 00:07:17.860 --> 00:07:21.840 And he looked the kind of person that this is going to be a great follower of Jesus. 00:07:23.579 --> 00:07:26.899 And Jesus acknowledged this was a lovely young man. 00:07:28.360 --> 00:07:34.100 And yet when Jesus spelled out the cost involved in following Jesus, 00:07:34.100 --> 00:07:39.180 the cost of being a Christian, that man went away sorrowful. 00:07:40.180 --> 00:07:44.800 Because he couldn't give up his idols, his wealth. 00:07:45.120 --> 00:07:47.699 This was his actual God. 00:07:48.100 --> 00:07:49.240 Not that money is wrong. 00:07:50.139 --> 00:07:55.800 But if our focus is in any way of the Lord onto it, then it is wrong. 00:07:56.620 --> 00:07:57.780 And he went away sorrowful. 00:07:57.779 --> 00:08:02.000 And you see, the devil is always trying to make us look back. 00:08:02.079 --> 00:08:04.039 And maybe tonight you might be here as a Christian. 00:08:04.299 --> 00:08:06.419 And that's what he's trying to make you do right now. 00:08:06.659 --> 00:08:07.679 Making you look back. 00:08:08.979 --> 00:08:11.539 And remembering it when, before you became a Christian. 00:08:11.679 --> 00:08:12.759 Remember, it was a lot easier. 00:08:13.819 --> 00:08:15.299 Didn't have the hassles you have now. 00:08:16.179 --> 00:08:18.559 Didn't have the struggles and battles that you have now. 00:08:18.560 --> 00:08:22.439 And the devil is great at getting hold. 00:08:22.519 --> 00:08:25.660 Once he gets out of mind going in a certain way, he goes for it. 00:08:26.379 --> 00:08:28.439 But always remember this, the devil is a liar. 00:08:28.780 --> 00:08:29.620 Satan is a liar. 00:08:29.740 --> 00:08:31.319 And he's been a liar from the beginning. 00:08:33.080 --> 00:08:38.919 So you see these, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, they were men that looked ahead. 00:08:39.580 --> 00:08:40.879 The past was in the past. 00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:42.580 And they were looking forward. 00:08:43.360 --> 00:08:50.399 Because they had discovered, like you have discovered, that this world does not ultimately satisfy. 00:08:51.460 --> 00:09:25.419 And you see, once we've tasted who Jesus is, once we have come to taste that the Lord is good, 00:09:26.000 --> 00:09:29.719 we have come to find what we know we were looking for. got the words of eternal life. 00:10:00.840 --> 00:10:03.419 And the Christian will say, you'll say that tonight as well. 00:10:03.419 --> 00:10:04.759 Where else can I go? 00:10:05.159 --> 00:10:06.099 I've been there. 00:10:07.179 --> 00:10:08.479 That's why I'm here now. 00:10:08.939 --> 00:10:11.500 Because Jesus has the words of eternal life. 00:10:12.620 --> 00:10:17.419 And this world, while it cannot give us deep-rooted and meaningful satisfaction, 00:10:18.579 --> 00:10:20.459 it's also a world of sorrow. 00:10:22.179 --> 00:10:24.139 Sorrows are always round some corner. 00:10:24.899 --> 00:10:29.059 There's always some hidden grief that comes on us in a way. 00:10:29.059 --> 00:10:34.779 And we long for the day when sorrows and griefs will be no more. 00:10:35.739 --> 00:10:39.519 We long to be in that place where God will wipe away all tears. 00:10:40.419 --> 00:10:41.919 What a wonderful prospect. 00:10:43.379 --> 00:10:45.659 But that will never be the case in this world. 00:10:47.199 --> 00:10:49.299 And again, this world is a place of sin. 00:10:49.439 --> 00:10:51.259 We know it all too well within ourselves. 00:10:51.259 --> 00:10:58.519 And sin not only affects our own lives, but it affects the whole of society. 00:10:58.759 --> 00:11:01.799 Society is crippled because of sin. 00:11:02.399 --> 00:11:03.620 It's a great plague. 00:11:04.779 --> that is because if you ask a lot of people, just generally, 00:12:53.299 --> 00:12:56.339 what do you hope for when you die? 00:12:56.479 --> 00:12:58.479 A lot of people say, oh, I'd like to go to heaven. 00:12:59.299 --> 00:13:03.339 But heaven, as far as they're concerned, is some kind of hazy idea. 00:13:04.059 --> 00:13:06.559 And heaven is simply a better alternative to hell. 00:13:07.259 --> 00:13:09.039 And that's basically what it is. 00:13:09.120 --> 00:13:14.199 They have this idea of some dreamy place, a way up, and everything will be good. 00:13:15.339 --> 00:13:21.639 But what we've got to remember is that that's not the heaven that the Bible shows us. 00:13:21.639 --> 00:13:26.159 And I think if a lot of people were honest, they would say, 00:13:26.319 --> 00:13:29.559 I would actually like, if possible, to stay in this world forever. 00:13:30.539 --> 00:13:32.939 Remember when I was preaching there last Sunday, 00:13:33.620 --> 00:13:35.600 how there was a... 00:13:35.600 --> 00:13:45.240 It would have been inevitable if Adam and Eve had not taken off the tree of the knowledge of good and evil 00:13:45.240 --> 00:13:51.860 and had eventually reached to the tree of life and taken it, 00:13:51.899 --> 00:13:53.159 then they would have lived forever. 00:13:53.759 --> 00:14:01.039 That is why God put the angel with the flaming sword guarding the tree of life. 00:14:01.120 --> 00:14:07.539 Because once they fell, it was in order that the Lord tells us that. 00:14:07.919 --> 00:14:09.980 Lest they get to the tree of life and live. 00:14:09.980 --> 00:14:17.340 It would be the worst catastrophe ever if we were to live forever in a fallen state in this world. 00:14:19.440 --> 00:14:24.720 And so the thing is that the non-Christian, not saying all non-Christians, 00:14:24.840 --> 00:14:31.159 but the majority of non-Christians would rather that they could live forever and ever and ever in this world. 00:14:31.159 --> 00:14:36.159 And heaven is simply a better alternative than hell, 00:14:36.339 --> 00:14:41.579 knowing that there will come a time when we have to leave this world. 00:14:42.879 --> 00:14:49.719 But the thing is that when you analyse what heaven is, 00:14:50.740 --> 00:14:54.360 heaven is being in the immediate presence of Christ. 00:14:54.360 --> 00:14:59.560 It's where all Christ's people come together to be with him, 00:14:59.840 --> 00:15:02.820 where he will be at the centre, where he will be shepherding us. 00:15:03.360 --> 00:15:06.480 Just as he shepherded his people while he was here in this world, 00:15:06.779 --> 00:15:11.019 he will shepherd his people throughout the endless ages of eternity. 00:15:12.320 --> 00:15:18.100 And he will be receiving their undying praise and honour forever. 00:15:18.100 --> 00:15:21.460 And the Christian longs for that. 00:15:23.500 --> 00:15:28.000 The non-Christian, the person who doesn't want Christ, 00:15:28.500 --> 00:15:30.860 can't really long for 00:16:01.100 thinking of yourself as you come to leave this world. 00:16:01.920 --> 00:16:04.019 What is it that you would really like? 00:16:04.840 --> 00:16:08.040 Is it to be taken into the presence of Christ? 00:16:09.060 --> 00:16:13.580 Or would you prefer that it went into a state of nothingness? 00:16:14.320 --> 00:16:15.519 That that would be the end? 00:16:16.519 --> 00:16:19.059 Some people believe that when you die, you die, 00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:20.220 and that's the end of everything, 00:16:20.620 --> 00:16:22.079 which we know is not true. 00:16:24.480 --> 00:16:25.659 Ask yourself that. 00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:27.079 Answer that honestly. 00:16:27.080 --> 00:16:28.820 And if you can say, 00:16:29.820 --> 00:16:32.980 my desire is to be in the immediate presence of you see, there's a real desire. 00:16:43.200 --> 00:16:47.800 Now, of course, it's inevitable that we always have a fear of death, 00:16:47.900 --> 00:16:49.500 of what it will entail. 00:16:49.500
