judge. 00:02:29.780 --> 00:02:33.400 Don't you know what you need to do today before you get to that point? 00:02:33.400 --> 00:02:42.319 The mention in chapter 13 verse 1, Luke tells us that these people were there at the present time, today. 00:02:43.460 --> 00:02:46.439 In Luke's mind, today is what matters here. 00:02:47.319 --> 00:02:50.740 Don't you know what day it is today and what you must do with today? 00:02:52.060 --> 00:02:56.860 The parable of the fig tree that gets one more year, doesn't it, to bear fruit, 00:02:56.960 --> 00:02:59.140 is all about the present time. 00:04:07.279 They are on the earth as Jesus exercises his earthly ministry. 00:04:08.639 --> 00:04:12.659 And Luke emphasises that they are people who are with Jesus, 00:04:12.839 --> 00:04:17.039 verse 1 of chapter 13, at that very present time. 00:04:18.680 --> 00:04:24.699 Luke tells us that because of the significance of the moment that they find themselves in. 00:04:26.079 --> 00:04:29.879 That there today is a day of extraordinary significance. 00:04:29.879 --> 00:04:34.659 Because they wake up one morning, don't they, on this day, 00:04:34.740 --> 00:04:39.219 and they don't realise it, but today is the day that Jesus is going to visit their town. 00:04:40.379 --> 00:04:43.360 And here he is, today of all days. 00:04:44.839 --> 00:04:48.439 And that for them means that they are found none. 00:05:11.300 --> 00:05:13.740 And he gives the order, doesn't he, in verse 7, 00:05:13.899 --> 00:05:15.639 and they are really serious words, 00:05:16.219 --> 00:05:18.620 cut it down. 00:05:18.620 --> 00:05:20.340 Now. 00:05:22.180 --> 00:05:24.660 He's not a ruthless vineyard owner. 00:05:24.780 --> 00:05:26.000 He's a good vineyard owner. 00:05:26.120 --> 00:05:27.579 He's waited three years, 00:05:28.139 --> 00:05:30.399 but he's had no fruit from this fig tree. 00:05:30.780 --> 00:05:32.259 So now is the time. 00:05:32.480 --> 00:05:33.920 Cut it down. 00:05:35.180 --> 00:06:14.799 John the Baptist is the last of the Old Testament prophets, 00:06:15.799 --> 00:06:18.699 and he gets the people ready for their tomorrow. 00:06:20.039 --> 00:06:22.019 When God is going to come, 00:06:22.479 --> 00:06:23.719 and he is going to do this, 00:06:23.779 --> 00:06:24.579 he is going to come, 00:06:24.679 --> 00:06:27.099 and he is going to clear out his vineyard. 00:06:27.100 --> 00:06:31.580 He uses the same picture of trees and fruit. 00:06:32.780 --> 00:06:34.580 In chapter 3, verse 8 and 9, 00:06:34.640 --> 00:06:35.260 he says to them, 00:06:35.460 --> 00:06:38.460 bear fruit in keeping with repentance, 00:06:38.680 --> 00:06:40.320 of turning back to God now. 00:06:41.340 --> 00:06:41.980 Verse 9, 00:06:42.080 --> 00:06:44.600 even now the axe is laying to the fruit of the tree, 00:06:44.680 --> 00:06:48.560 and every tree that doesn't bear good fruit 00:06:48.560 --> 00:06:50.920 is cut down and thrown into the fire. 00:06:51.300 --> 00:06:52.700 And his message yesterday 00:06:52.700 --> 00:06:54.180 was people, 00:06:54.379 --> 00:06:56.439 tomorrow God is going to come. 00:06:57.100 --> 00:06:59.240 And he's going to cut you --> 00:07:19.020 And the problem for these people 00:07:19.020 --> 00:07:20.879 is that they can't see that. 00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:24.040 Today is crisis point. 00:07:24.040 --> 00:07:27.360 And the vineyard owner has come to say, 00:07:27.740 --> 00:07:28.520 cut it down. 00:07:30.020 --> 00:07:31.500 The axe was laid at the root, 00:07:31.640 --> 00:07:32.420 and now he's saying, 00:07:32.540 --> 00:07:33.600 take a swing at it. 00:07:34.939 --> 00:07:37.140 And they didn't know that their case 00:07:37.140 --> 00:07:39.180 was very, very bad on this day. 00:07:39.860 --> 00:07:42.060 That judgment was imminent 00:07:42.060 --> 00:07:43.259 upon these people, 00:07:43.379 --> 00:07:44.259 upon this generation. 00:07:45.720 --> 00:07:47.500 And in the context of this parable, 00:07:47.600 --> 00:07:49.860 Jesus is trying to explain that to them, 00:07:49.860 --> 00:07:52.379 of how significant today is for them. 00:07:52.379 --> 00:07:54.259 And he's saying all the signs 00:07:54.259 --> 00:07:56.019 point to this crisis. 00:07:57.439 --> 00:07:59.399 Back to when he's talking about the weather. 00:08:00.519 --> 00:08:02.079 He says you can tell what's coming,
