him. 00:00:26.219 --> 00:00:29.039 But if Baal, then follow him. 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:34.719 And the people did not answer him a word. 00:00:34.719 --> 00:00:42.000 As a boy growing up, Elijah was one of my favorite characters in the Bible 00:00:42.000 --> 00:00:45.280 because he seemed to be tough as nails. 00:00:45.280 --> 00:00:52.400 And he seemed to be just a man who was utterly fearless and would do anything and go anywhere. 00:00:52.400 --> 00:00:54.659 And that one mission was to serve God. 00:00:54.659 --> 00:01:00.339 And he was, I suppose, like a lot of young boys, Elijah was a hero to us. 00:01:01.379 --> 00:01:08.319 And I used to think it was very fitting that when God was taking, as he took Enoch, 00:01:08.379 --> 00:01:16.719 he also took Elijah, that he was to take this incredible servant of his out of this world, never meeting death. 00:01:16.719 --> 00:01:21.760 But Elijah, although he may appear otherworldly to us, 00:01:21.760 --> 00:01:23.760 because sometimes when you read through Elijah, 00:01:23.760 --> 00:01:29.000 apart from the one lapse that he had when he ran away from Jezebel, 00:01:29.719 --> 00:01:34.500 everything else about his life was unbelievably passionate, zealous. 00:01:34.500 --> 00:01:37.060 And you'd almost think he was kind of different to us. 00:01:37.439 --> 00:01:38.120 But he wasn't. 00:01:38.120 --> 00:01:43.540 James, in his letter, tells us, Elijah was exactly like you and me, 00:01:43.660 --> 00:01:46.420 with the same passions, the same kind of character. 00:01:47.020 --> 00:01:50.080 They're no different to the likes of you and me. 00:01:50.620 --> 00:01:53.160 So James tells us this. 00:01:54.400 --> 00:02:00.460 Now in this chapter that we meet here, there's a crisis has come in the land. 00:02:01.120 --> 00:02:06.460 And the idolatry of Israel is just beginning to overwhelm the whole place. 00:02:06.459 --> 00:02:11.479 And because of that idolatry, God has sent a drought on the land, 00:02:12.099 --> 00:02:15.719 so that they were without water for three years. 00:02:16.680 --> 00:02:22.259 And it's in light of this that Elijah comes to bring this challenge to Israel. 00:02:23.560 --> 00:02:24.719 And they have to make a decision. 00:02:24.939 --> 00:02:28.099 Now you and I know life is full of decision making. 00:02:28.199 --> 00:02:29.659 We're always having to make decisions. 00:02:30.379 --> 00:02:34.560 Some of these decisions are so small, we don't realize that they're actually decisions. 00:02:34.560 --> 00:02:36.580 The likes of, what am I going to eat? 00:02:36.759 --> 00:02:39.379 Or if you have leisure time, will I read? 00:02:39.500 --> 00:02:40.460 Will I watch something? 00:02:40.560 --> 00:02:41.439 Will I go for a walk? 00:02:41.680 --> 00:02:47.759 These are the kind of sort of little decisions that we make within the day 00:02:47.759 --> 00:02:50.020 that have no great consequences at all. 00:02:50.500 --> 00:02:53.000 But then there are bigger choices, bigger decisions. 00:02:53.640 --> 00:02:57.099 The likes of, when it comes to marriage, who you're marrying, 00:02:57.580 --> 00:03:00.159 where you're going to live, the job you're going to have. 00:03:00.159 --> 00:03:03.240 These are much bigger choices, bigger decisions. 00:03:03.479 --> 00:03:07.400 But the biggest decision, the biggest choice that anybody could Elijah for the drought. 00:03:53.800 --> 00:03:57.900 You see, Elijah, according to God's word, 00:03:58.020 --> 00:04:00.620 had come to Ab and said to him, 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:04.080 As the Lord God lives, there will be no rain for three years. 00:04:05.260 --> 00:04:11.640 Because Ab was leading Israel in a downward spiral of idolatry. 00:04:11.720 --> 00:04:13.900 It was getting worse and worse and worse. 00:04:14.260 --> 00:04:17.639 And they were going further and further and further away from God. 00:04:17.639 --> 00:04:19.719 And so God said, 00:04:19.919 --> 00:04:20.479 My 00:05:41.360 --> 00:05:42.620 the land was in a crisis. 00:05:42.880 --> 00:05:44.200 There was so much drought 00:05:44.200 --> 00:05:45.360 and people were suffering. 00:05:45.500 --> 00:05:47.420 People would be dying because of the famine, 00:05:47.980 --> 00:05:49.760 because there wouldn't be the crops 00:05:49.760 --> 00:05:51.940 due to the lack of water. 00:05:53.060 --> 00:05:55.180 And what is King Ahab doing at this point? 00:05:55.380 --> 00:05:57.180 When his people are in a crisis, 00:05:57.940 --> 00:06:00.760 he's looking for a bit of grass and water 00:06:00.760 --> 00:06:02.200 for his mules and horses. 00:06:02.199 --> 00:06:03.979 No word about the people. 00:06:04.659 --> 00:06:07.099 All he's concerned about are his mules 00:06:07.099 --> 00:06:08.719 and so self-centered, 00:06:23.120 --> 00:06:24.480 so self-obsessed, 00:06:24.480 --> 00:06:27.160 that his horses and his mules 00:06:27.160 --> 00:06:29.240 count far more to him 00:06:29.240 --> 00:08:17.199 she had a hatred 00:08:17.199 --> 00:08:17.919 for God 00:08:17.919 --> 00:08:19.819 and for the cause 00:08:19.819 --> 00:08:20.419 of Christ. 00:08:20.939 --> 00:08:21.899 And she was
