Bible clearly teaches that Christians are brothers and sisters in Christ with one Father. 00:01:32.859 --> 00:01:42.760 The question I have this morning is what's to be the feel and focus of the family of God? 00:01:44.719 --> 00:01:49.739 What makes us as God's family distinct? 00:01:49.739 --> 00:01:56.459 Well, according to Jesus, we're going to see this in a minute, Mark chapter 3, 00:01:57.259 --> 00:02:04.239 what distinguishes us as God's family is our shared commitment to do the will of our Father. 00:02:05.239 --> 00:02:08.539 We're committed together to obey our Father. 00:02:08.539 --> 00:02:17.780 Now, God's will is clearly revealed in God's Word, the Bible. 00:02:18.959 --> 00:02:22.060 So at the outset of this sermon, let me just ask you this question. 00:03:45.259 According to Jesus, doing the will of God is the defining trait of every member of God's family. 00:03:45.840 --> 00:03:46.680 The church. 00:03:46.680 --> 00:03:54.240 The church is the blood-bought people of God indwelt by the Holy Spirit on mission for Christ. 00:03:54.379 --> 00:03:59.340 And so far in our series, we've seen that the church as one flock following one shepherd. 00:03:59.500 --> 00:04:04.740 We've seen the church as one bride exclusively devoted to one bridegroom. 00:04:05.439 --> 00:04:16.480 Last week, we saw the church as one holy temple, the dwelling place of God that is established on and growing from one cornerstone, Jesus. 00:04:17.639 --> 00:04:25.459 And this morning, we get to see the church as one family united together to do the will of not familiar with what a gospel is, a gospel is basically a first century documentary showing who Jesus is and what he's done. 00:04:56.220 --> 00:05:05.000 And so in the gospel of Mark, like the gospel of Matthew and Luke and John, these gospels show us Jesus' life. 00:05:05.680 --> 00:05:10.940 They show us Jesus' teaching, his miracles, his death, and his resurrection. 00:05:10.939 --> house in Capernaum. 00:07:25.579 --> 00:07:26.679 So those are the scene changes. 00:07:26.839 --> 00:07:27.000 Okay. 00:07:27.099 --> 00:07:28.919 So let's do this together. 00:07:29.919 --> 00:07:32.519 So chapter 3, verses 1 through 6. 00:07:32.519 --> 00:07:41.839 We're immediately in a synagogue in a town called Capernaum on a Sabbath, which is a Saturday. 00:07:42.579 --> 00:07:46.799 Capernaum was a town on the very northern shore of the Sea of Galilee. 00:07:46.939 --> 00:07:51.039 It was Jesus' base of operations for the first part of his public ministry. 00:07:51.040 --> 00:07:54.280 Jesus walks into the synagogue. 00:07:54.680 --> 00:07:55.379 No joke. 00:07:55.640 --> 00:07:57.939 That sounds like Jesus walked into a synagogue. 00:07:58.160 --> 00:07:58.920 It's not a joke. 00:07:59.319 --> 00:08:00.340 But it is a setup. 00:08:01.060 --> 00:08:07.040 Because he walks into this synagogue, and there on this Sabbath day is a man with a withered hand. 00:08:08.080 --> 00:08:11.040 And this man with a withered hand has been brought in by the Pharisees. 00:08:12.040 --> 00:08:13.920 They were the local clergy of the time. 00:08:13.920 --> 00:08:23.240 And what they were doing, you can see at the end of verse 2, they were seeking to accuse Jesus of something. 00:08:24.100 --> 00:08:27.160 And it was doing work on the Sabbath day. 00:08:28.280 --> 00:08:31.680 All Jews were required to rest on the Sabbath. 00:08:33.159 --> 00:08:39.620 And what these Pharisees were trying to make a case of is that healing was a work. 00:08:39.620 --> 00:08:44.980 And if Jesus healed on a Sabbath day, he was doing work on a Sabbath day. 00:08:45.139 --> 00:08:48.639 And if he's doing work on a Sabbath day, he's a Sabbath breaker, which means he's a sinner. 00:08:48.899 --> 00:08:50.299 And it's a way to discredit him. 00:08:51.740 --> 00:08:54.399 And in 3.4, Jesus raises this question. 00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:59.679 Jesus says, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill? 00:08:59.860 --> 00:09:01.259 Here's how you need to hear that. 00:09:01.259 --> 00:09:12.620 Is it the will of God on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to kill? 00:09:12.899 --> 00:09:16.639 And if you look at the end of verse 4, it says they were silent. 00:09:18.220 --> 00:09:20.720 The Pharisees, those who are trying to set him up. 00:09:21.299 --> 00:09:22.939 And Jesus looks around in verse 5. 00:09:23.120 --> 00:09:25.919 And it's one of these moments where we see Jesus angry. 00:09:27.439 --> 00:09:28.600 He's angry with him. 00:09:28.600 --> 00:09:32.700 And so what Jesus does, he tells the man with the withered hand, stretch out your hand. 00:09:32.960 --> 00:09:36.779 The man puts out his hand and it is fully restored. 00:09:39.420 --> 00:09:47.200 On this Sabbath day, it was God's will to do good, to give life. 00:09:47.399 --> 00:09:51.720 The restoration of this man's hand was a restoration of life, function. 00:09:51.720 --> 00:10:03.620 Ironically, in 3.6, on this Sabbath day, the Pharisees plot to destroy Jesus, to harm and to kill. 00:10:04.360 --> 00:10:09.240 So let me ask you, this first scene, who's doing the will of God? 00:10:11.360 --> 00:10:13.519 Jesus, who's not doing the will of God? 00:10:14.220 --> 00:10:15.340 The Pharisees. 00:10:15.340 --> 00:10:20.080 It's about who's doing the will of God. 00:10:20.200 --> 00:10:23.620 And those who do the will of God, Jesus will claim as his own. 00:10:25.540 --> 00:10:30.840 The next scene, we go from the synagogue in verses 7 through 11. 00:10:31.360 --> 00:10:33.879 We're going to actually go through verse 12. 00:10:34.240 --> 00:10:37.440 But there's two groups of people Jesus interacts with in this scene. 00:10:37.519 --> 00:10:39.860 And the scene is no longer in the synagogue. 00:10:39.860 --> 00:10:42.000 It's by the seaside. 00:10:42.440 --> 00:10:49.700 And in verses 7 through 10, what happens is this massive crowd comes to Jesus. 00:10:50.279 --> 00:10:51.000 It's huge. 00:10:51.500 --> 00:10:54.600 And in verses 7 and 8, you can see the makeup of this crowd. 00:10:54.700 --> 00:10:55.659 It was multinational. 00:10:56.460 --> 00:10:57.659 It was multiethnic. 00:10:57.759 --> 00:11:01.700 We have a multiethnic congregation gathered around Jesus. 00:11:02.039 --> 00:11:02.820 Is this the church? 00:11:02.820 --> 00:11:10.700 And what they're doing is they're pressing in on Jesus just to touch him. 00:11:12.560 --> 00:11:14.480 Because they heard that he was a healer. 00:11:17.060 --> 00:11:22.720 In verse 9, Jesus says, hey, to his disciples, guys, we might need to get out of here real quick. 00:11:22.760 --> 00:11:23.560 Would you have a boat ready? 00:11:23.680 --> 00:11:25.660 That's how pressing this was. 00:11:27.880 --> 00:11:29.100 Let me ask you a question. 00:11:30.960 --> 00:11:32.400 Why is the crowd there? 00:11:32.820 --> 00:11:37.440 Are they there to follow Jesus? 00:11:37.720 --> 00:11:40.540 To deny themselves, take up their crosses and follow him? 00:11:42.280 --> 00:11:43.500 They're there to be healed. 00:11:45.560 --> 00:11:47.680 Very real suffering. 00:11:48.420 --> 00:11:49.860 Very real diseases. 00:11:50.560 --> 00:11:51.760 Very real disorders. 00:11:52.440 --> 00:11:54.320 Very real demonizations. 00:11:56.180 --> 00:12:01.780 And they're seeing Jesus as their last hope for relief from their physical suffering. 00:12:02.820 --> 00:12:04.540 But they're not there to follow him. 00:12:06.960 --> 00:12:08.040 They're there to use him. 00:12:10.080 --> 00:12:13.080 They think that their physical disease is their biggest problem. 00:12:13.080 --> 00:12:18.480 Jesus doesn't claim this crowd as his own. 00:12:21.280 --> 00:12:22.220 He heals them. 00:12:23.340 --> 00:12:24.560 But he doesn't own them. 00:12:25.780 --> 00:12:29.900 Now, a lot of churches today on a sidebar, they're calling people to Jesus. 00:12:30.180 --> 00:12:34.820 And they're calling people to Jesus with this kind of thinking. 00:12:34.820 --> 00:12:40.520 Jesus will make you the best version of yourself. 00:12:40.519 --> 00:12:47.100 And in one degree, there's truth to that. 00:12:48.100 --> 00:12:54.759 But when you match that up with what Jesus calls people to, I'm thinking Mark 8.34. 00:12:55.000 --> 00:13:01.360 Jesus says, if anyone would come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. 00:13:01.360 --> 00:13:09.840 Today, we start realizing that what was driving this crowd back on the seaside in Capernaum. 00:13:09.960 --> 00:13:12.379 Hey, that's happening today in churches. 00:13:14.240 --> 00:13:21.519 People are calling, churches are calling people to make yourselves better with Jesus. 00:13:21.879 --> 00:13:24.800 And Jesus says, you've got to deny yourself. 00:13:25.000 --> 00:13:26.360 Take up your cross and follow me. 00:13:26.360 --> 00:13:34.480 You know what would have been different is if someone came up to Jesus, maybe from Tyre's side, 00:13:34.659 --> 00:13:38.220 and they come up to Jesus on the seaside, and they say, Jesus, you know what? 00:13:38.940 --> 00:13:40.659 You can heal me if you want. 00:13:41.639 --> 00:13:42.779 I don't care. 00:13:43.259 --> 00:13:45.399 I am here to follow you. 00:13:47.860 --> 00:13:49.200 That's different altogether. 00:13:52.820 --> 00:13:55.120 They're not here to do God's will. 00:13:56.360 --> 00:14:02.340 In 3.11-12, still at the seaside, we have another very interesting interaction of a different sort. 00:14:02.840 --> 00:14:07.279 Jesus has a conversation with demons, unclean spirits. 00:14:07.379 --> 00:14:08.240 You see it in verse 11. 00:14:09.440 --> 00:14:12.700 These unclean spirits are recognizing Jesus for who he is. 00:14:12.800 --> 00:14:16.300 They're falling down before him, and they are saying, you are the son of God. 00:14:17.340 --> 00:14:21.980 Now, what's interesting in the gospel of Mark is if you flip back to chapter 1, verse 1, 00:14:21.980 --> 00:14:27.360 Mark begins with the beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the son of God. 00:14:27.740 --> 00:14:33.320 And then if you flip back to Mark chapter 15, at the end of the gospel of Mark, 00:14:33.740 --> 00:14:36.120 what you see happening in verse 39 is, 00:14:36.560 --> 00:14:42.800 and when the centurion, a Roman centurion, stood facing Jesus who was hanging on the cross, 00:14:43.159 --> 00:14:45.680 saw that in this way he breathed his last, 00:14:45.679 --> 00:14:50.939 that Roman centurion said, truly this man was the son of God. 00:14:51.859 --> 00:14:55.379 The gospel of Mark is all about showing us the son of God. 00:14:56.859 --> 00:15:00.639 And interestingly enough, here are these demons saying, you are the son of God. 00:15:02.059 --> 00:15:03.439 Well, let me ask you this question. 00:15:03.440 --> 00:15:07.280 Are these demons, though they're identifying Jesus rightly, 00:15:08.000 --> 00:15:10.120 are they doing the will of God? 00:15:11.240 --> 00:15:11.920 No. 00:15:13.100 --> 00:15:16.960 Because they're oppressing image bearers of God. 00:15:19.980 --> 00:15:26.660 Demonic activity is always marked by disintegration of people, distortion, destruction of people. 00:15:27.140 --> 00:15:28.620 And that's not God's will. 00:15:28.620 --> 00:15:36.860 God's will is always to reclaim, to redeem, and to restore image bearers into the image of Christ. 00:15:39.399 --> 00:15:42.259 These demons had a pretty good understanding of who Jesus was. 00:15:42.340 --> 00:15:44.759 You are the son of God, but they're definitely not there to do God's will. 00:15:45.600 --> 00:15:47.399 So here on this seaside scene, 00:15:47.960 --> 00:15:51.700 neither the multinational gathering of people around Jesus, 00:15:51.840 --> 00:15:56.080 nor these demons, none of the above, are doing the will of God. 00:15:56.080 --> 00:15:59.700 And Jesus does not claim any of them as his own. 00:16:02.040 --> 00:16:07.139 The next scene, we go from seaside to up on a mountain. 00:16:07.560 --> 00:16:09.700 And this is in verses 13 through 19. 00:16:10.780 --> 00:16:18.240 And what we see here is Jesus calling and appointing his 12 disciples, or apostles. 00:16:18.240 --> 00:16:23.419 And what I want you to called in verses 14 and 15 00:17:16.039 --> 00:17:18.799 to preach and cast out demons, to do kingdom work, 00:17:18.900 --> 00:17:21.559 to proclaim gospel, to engage in spiritual warfare. 00:17:23.779 --> 00:17:25.960 It's very different than what we've seen in the synagogue 00:17:25.960 --> 00:17:29.720 and that whole interactions by the sea. 00:17:29.720 --> 00:17:34.160 These 12 what that's a reference to? 00:18:06.299 --> 00:18:08.539 But in verse 18, we read this. 00:18:09.180 --> 00:18:13.039 Andrew and Philip and Bartholomew and Matthew. 00:18:14.420 --> 00:18:15.680 And then at the end of verse 18, 00:18:16.220 --> 00:18:17.340 and Simon the zealot. 00:18:18.700 --> 00:18:20.080 Do you know what Matthew did for a living 00:18:20.080 --> 00:18:21.039 before he diametrically opposed commitments, 00:19:09.319 --> 00:19:10.179 at least in their past, 00:19:10.359 --> 00:19:11.579 and he brings them together. 00:19:11.579 --> 00:19:15.599 He brings them together to be near him. 00:19:16.019 --> 00:19:17.139 He brings them together 00:19:17.139 --> 00:19:20.639 to be sent out to do kingdom work together. 00:19:24.799 --> 00:19:26.559 In this passage,
