new heaven and a new earth, the Scripture tells us. 00:02:10.379 --> 00:02:15.719 And in this new heaven and new earth, everything will be perfect. 00:02:17.340 --> 00:02:20.500 There will only be things new, God is going to bring this world to a point of judgment. 00:02:39.919 --> 00:02:41.000 A point of judgment. 00:02:42.000 --> 00:02:49.339 We saw last week in the book of Ecclesiastes, the first part of chapter 3, there's a time for everything under heaven. 00:02:50.139 --> 00:02:54.419 There's a time to be born, a time to die, a time to do everything under the heavens. 00:02:54.419 --> 00:03:02.839 Well, this morning we're going to look specifically, there is a time for judgment at the end of our lives. 00:03:03.039 --> 00:03:05.139 Or we could call it a time for justice. 00:03:06.579 --> 00:03:09.159 I want you to read with me this morning just three verses. 00:03:09.659 --> 00:03:11.439 Chapter 3, verses 16 and 17. 00:03:12.119 --> 00:03:15.179 And then chapter 4, verse 1. 00:03:15.819 --> 00:03:16.679 Let's read it together. 00:03:16.680 --> 00:03:27.740 Moreover, I saw under the sun that in the place of justice, even there was wickedness. 00:03:28.180 --> 00:03:34.219 And in the place of righteousness, even there was wickedness. 00:03:35.020 --> 00:03:39.219 I said in my heart, God will judge the righteous and the wicked. 00:03:39.960 --> 00:03:44.360 There is a time for every matter and for every work. 00:03:44.360 --> 00:03:47.360 Look now in chapter 4, verse 1. 00:03:48.840 --> 00:03:54.480 Again, I saw all the oppressions that are done under oppressors, there was power. 00:04:08.400 --> 00:04:13.360 And there was no one to comfort them. 00:04:14.319 --> 00:04:18.879 These verses tell us why we need a time of judgment. 00:04:19.360 --> 00:04:25.420 First, a time of judgment is needed because of the widespread wickedness in this world. 00:04:26.399 --> 00:04:30.939 That's what he's talking about with the word injustice in chapter 3, verse 16. 00:04:31.139 --> 00:04:34.259 And the word oppression in chapter 4, verse 1. 00:04:34.259 --> 00:04:43.459 Look at, if you would, at how the preacher, as the writer of Ecclesiastes refers to himself. 00:04:44.259 --> 00:04:47.980 How he describes this particular form of injustice. 00:04:48.860 --> 00:04:49.879 Verse 16. 00:04:49.879 --> 00:04:56.519 In the place of justice, before a judge. 00:04:57.159 --> 00:04:58.639 In the court system. 00:04:58.719 --> 00:04:59.560 That's what he's talking about. 00:05:00.259 --> 00:05:05.579 In the place of justice, even there was wickedness. 00:05:06.060 --> 00:05:07.620 And in the place of righteousness. 00:05:08.379 --> 00:05:12.579 In the place before the judge, before the court. 00:05:13.079 --> 00:05:15.879 We expect things to be done rightly. 00:05:16.600 --> 00:05:18.959 We expect right to take place. 00:05:18.959 --> 00:05:26.139 And in the place of righteousness, even there was wickedness. 00:05:27.039 --> 00:05:29.120 He's talking about an unjust judge. 00:05:29.419 --> 00:05:31.759 An unjust court system. 00:05:32.799 --> 00:05:39.859 The very place that we expect the right thing to be done. demoralizing situation. 00:06:03.579 --> 00:06:07.079 Look at how Martin Luther, the reformer, described this. 00:06:07.939 --> 00:06:13.259 He said that the preacher is not complaining because there is wickedness in the place of justice, 00:06:13.859 --> 00:06:19.319 but because the wickedness in the place of justice cannot be corrected. 00:06:19.319 --> 00:06:21.879 I want you to think about it. 00:06:23.319 --> 00:06:26.860 If you can't find justice when you go to court. 00:06:29.480 --> 00:06:32.779 If you can't find it when you stand before a judge. 00:06:34.139 --> 00:06:35.719 You're not going to be able to find it. 00:06:37.500 --> 00:06:39.839 It's not going to be a possibility. 00:06:39.839 --> 00:06:44.259 The judge who is supposed to be fair and impartial. 00:06:45.119 --> 00:06:52.560 If he's not, there's no hope that we'll be treated fairly. 00:06:53.159 --> 00:06:55.019 That's the picture he's painting here. 00:06:56.599 --> 00:06:58.159 Injustice is everywhere. 00:06:59.419 --> 00:07:02.639 He does not imply that every court's that way, every judge is that way, 00:07:02.739 --> 00:07:04.559 every person you know is that way. 00:07:04.560 --> 00:07:10.780 He's talking about what we all know, generally speaking, life is not fair. 00:07:12.160 --> 00:07:17.180 Now the problem with oppression in chapter 4, verse 1, is equally hopeless. 00:07:18.500 --> 00:07:21.180 The oppressors, it says, were the people in power. 00:07:22.980 --> 00:07:26.879 The people who were suffering, people who were being oppressed, 00:07:27.019 --> 00:07:30.840 taken advantage of, mistreated, they had no power. 00:07:30.839 --> 00:07:36.979 It's the ones who were oppressing them, mistreating them, taking advantage of them. 00:07:37.239 --> 00:07:38.739 They were the power brokers. 00:07:40.679 --> 00:07:44.500 And as such, what could people do? 00:07:46.019 --> 00:07:46.799 It's hopeless. 00:07:48.559 --> 00:07:54.799 You know, we live in a world filled with people in this same kind of situation. 00:07:55.759 --> 00:07:59.559 Let's just think for a moment, away from our country, right this very moment. 00:07:59.560 --> 00:08:05.000 There are tens of thousands of Christians who live in fear 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:10.399 because they are a minority, a persecuted minority where they live. 00:08:11.259 --> 00:08:15.100 There are Christians this morning who have no home to go to 00:08:15.100 --> 00:08:20.279 because they've been put out by their family who is of another faith, 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:23.699 and they consider their child, even as an adult, 00:08:23.699 --> 00:08:25.599 who has professed faith in Jesus. 00:08:25.759 --> 00:08:29.779 They consider that child to have become a pagan. 00:08:31.060 --> 00:08:35.059 They consider that they no longer live, even, in some of them's sight. 00:08:35.600 --> 00:08:38.419 There are communities today where a person who's become a Christian, 00:08:38.960 --> 00:08:39.860 he can't work. 00:08:40.100 --> 00:08:41.399 They won't let him have a job. 00:08:41.580 --> 00:08:44.379 They won't let him make a living for his family. 00:08:45.659 --> 00:08:48.159 There are people right now, in this world, this moment, 00:08:48.159 --> 00:08:49.620 breathing the same air we are. 00:08:52.539 --> 00:08:56.059 They're suffering all because of their faith in Jesus, 00:08:56.899 --> 00:09:01.000 and they're suffering unjustly at the hands of their family members, 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:05.120 their community, their government. 00:09:05.120 --> 00:09:09.519 Some of them are in prison right now. 00:09:10.799 --> 00:09:11.879 Here's what's so sad. 00:09:12.759 --> 00:09:15.080 There's not one thing they can do about it. 00:09:16.720 --> 00:09:21.820 There's nowhere on earth for them to turn. 00:09:22.560 --> 00:09:29.180 There's no one who can really help them, make things right for them. 00:09:30.799 --> 00:09:32.960 Let's look closer to home now. 00:09:32.960 --> 00:09:38.519 In this country, think about how many women suffer abuse 00:09:38.519 --> 00:09:42.240 at the hands of wicked and cowardly men 00:09:42.240 --> 00:09:45.580 who threaten to kill them if they tell anyone 00:09:45.580 --> 00:09:48.040 or if they call the police. 00:09:49.000 --> 00:09:53.860 They're afraid because of the power being exerted over them, 00:09:54.040 --> 00:09:55.340 they're afraid to do anything. 00:09:56.240 --> 00:10:01.200 Children are horribly abused by their own wicked parents 00:10:01.200 --> 00:10:04.540 or by a wicked parent's boyfriend or girlfriend. 00:10:05.280 --> 00:10:06.660 We read about it all the time. 00:10:08.660 --> 00:10:10.860 Whether you get your news from the newspaper, 00:10:12.160 --> 00:10:13.980 online, on TV, 00:10:15.920 --> 00:10:19.720 mugshots every day, new ones nearly every day, 00:10:19.900 --> 00:10:22.100 of people in upstate South Carolina 00:10:22.100 --> 00:10:28.500 who are beating, some even killing their spouse or girlfriend. 00:10:29.720 --> 00:10:34.040 Parents not just beating but torturing their children. 00:10:35.200 --> 00:10:39.480 That is happening here in the upstate, 00:10:40.200 --> 00:10:42.420 here in Pickens County. 00:10:42.940 --> 00:10:47.139 And many of these children are either too young to know what to do, 00:10:47.379 --> 00:10:48.540 too young to tell, 00:10:48.539 --> 00:10:53.559 or they're too afraid to say anything. 00:10:55.279 --> 00:10:58.980 But when an abused woman or child does tell, 00:10:59.500 --> 00:11:01.699 when they do muster up the courage, 00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:03.079 they take the risk, 00:11:03.279 --> 00:11:05.839 it doesn't automatically mean they're going to be rescued. 00:11:07.299 --> 00:11:09.419 The courts and social agencies, 00:11:09.419 --> 00:11:13.539 they have more cases than they have people to work. 00:11:13.539 --> 00:11:14.860 There's a backlog. 00:11:16.839 --> 00:11:17.819 And then sometimes, 00:11:18.399 --> 00:11:20.000 some of those severe cases, 00:11:20.199 --> 00:11:22.079 when they do get dealt with, 00:11:22.699 --> 00:11:26.919 there are situations where the abuser's dealt with too leniently. 00:11:28.459 --> 00:11:30.159 And the court does nothing. 00:11:30.259 --> 00:11:32.399 The social agency won't remove the child. 00:11:34.360 --> 00:11:36.839 And so the abuser continues. 00:11:36.840 --> 00:11:42.700 And there's no protection for the victim. 00:11:44.300 --> 00:11:45.320 There's no hope. 00:11:46.720 --> 00:11:49.620 One of the most frustrating examples of injustice in this country 00:11:49.620 --> 00:11:52.120 is the way our United States Supreme Court 00:11:52.120 --> 00:11:55.660 allows the execution of innocent babies 00:11:55.660 --> 00:11:58.780 in their mother's womb by abortion. 00:12:00.120 --> 00:12:02.100 Now the Supreme Court justifies themselves. 00:12:02.400 --> 00:12:04.560 They say it is a mother's choice, 00:12:04.680 --> 00:12:05.620 and that's the end of it. 00:12:05.620 --> 00:12:09.759 But the voice of truth and justice clearly said, 00:12:10.220 --> 00:12:11.179 it's a baby's life. 00:12:13.639 --> 00:12:14.539 Now you think about it. 00:12:15.360 --> 00:12:17.120 In this country, 00:12:18.039 --> 00:12:23.519 one of the greatest examples of wickedness in power 00:12:23.519 --> 00:12:29.680 is the United States Supreme Court's rulings like this. 00:12:29.679 --> 00:12:37.699 It's all about the woman's choice. 00:12:37.699 --> 00:12:41.579 And that little baby with a heart beating, 00:12:42.579 --> 00:12:47.079 fully human, living individual 00:12:47.079 --> 00:12:51.699 has no one to speak for them. 00:12:51.700 --> 00:12:55.300 And so at the whim of a mother, 00:12:55.500 --> 00:12:57.920 at the scalpel of a doctor, 00:12:59.200 --> 00:13:01.920 their lives are taken, destroyed. 00:13:03.200 --> 00:13:05.160 The world is filled with people 00:13:05.160 --> 00:13:08.560 who oppress the weak, 00:13:09.840 --> 00:13:15.440 care nothing about people being treated fairly or justly. 00:13:15.440 --> 00:13:22.400 But the Bible is clear that God takes a strong stand 00:13:22.400 --> 00:13:24.560 against such people. 00:13:25.500 --> 00:13:26.440 I want you to hear me. 00:13:26.820 --> 00:13:32.000 God takes a strong stand against all abusers, 00:13:32.580 --> 00:13:34.340 whether they break the law or not. 00:13:34.340 --> 00:13:41.240 God hates a lack of justice. 00:13:42.320 --> 00:13:44.480 He hates those who oppress, 00:13:45.220 --> 00:13:47.780 take advantage of people because they can. 00:13:47.779 --> 00:13:53.139 God opposes all who abuse their power and privilege 00:13:53.139 --> 00:13:54.339 by mistreating people. 00:13:54.740 --> 00:13:56.679 The Old Testament prophets are filled 00:13:56.679 --> 00:13:59.579 with all kinds of warnings about such. 00:14:00.059 --> 00:14:02.759 The book of Zechariah lists the kinds of people 00:14:02.759 --> 00:14:04.699 who are most likely to be oppressed. 00:14:05.699 --> 00:14:07.079 I want you to look at the list here. 00:14:08.240 --> 00:14:12.199 Widows, orphans, foreigners, 00:14:12.720 --> 00:14:14.480 actually aliens living in the land, 00:14:15.480 --> 00:14:16.259 and the poor. 00:14:17.779 --> 00:14:19.179 You need to understand, 00:14:20.399 --> 00:14:22.339 God has a special place in His heart 00:14:22.339 --> 00:14:24.419 for the widow, for the orphan, 00:14:25.179 --> 00:14:27.639 for the alien living in His land, 00:14:28.379 --> 00:14:29.959 and for the poor. 00:14:32.279 --> 00:14:35.179 And if God has a special place in His heart for them, 00:14:35.319 --> 00:14:38.019 so should we as God's children. 00:14:39.379 --> 00:14:42.000 Look back in chapter 3, verses 16 and 17. 00:14:43.919 --> 00:14:45.299 The preacher wants us to know 00:14:45.299 --> 00:14:46.559 that while we live in a world 00:14:46.559 --> 00:14:48.779 of much injustice and oppression, 00:14:49.179 --> 00:14:51.919 it's not always going to be that way. 00:14:53.099 --> 00:14:54.759 The day of judgment will come. 00:14:54.819 --> 00:14:55.899 Look at verse 17 again. 00:14:56.459 --> 00:14:58.179 God will judge the righteous and the wicked, 00:14:59.179 --> 00:15:01.119 for there is a time for every matter 00:15:01.119 --> 00:15:02.459 and for every work. 00:15:02.739 --> 00:15:04.119 We need to take comfort in that statement 00:15:04.819 --> 00:15:06.000 if we're believers. 00:15:06.000 --> 00:15:10.460 That should encourage us. 00:15:10.460 --> 00:15:13.940 God will one day make everything right.
