Today, our main passage is James chapter 2 verses 1 through 13. 00:00:59.420 --> 00:01:06.320 Now, I wish that I could say six months ago we planned this out and, you know, we just had it in mind all aware of when we think about becoming welcoming or being a welcoming church. 00:01:27.739 --> 00:01:31.359 A few pitfalls that I think are easy to fall into. 00:01:31.519 --> 00:01:34.659 And one of those is one that you would typically go to. 00:01:34.739 --> 00:01:36.519 I think that everybody would recognize. 00:01:36.640 --> 00:01:44.159 And we sometimes find ourselves becoming unwelcoming because we feel that we are being inconvenienced. 00:01:44.259 --> 00:01:47.979 Our preferences or our comfortability is being challenged. 00:01:48.199 --> 00:01:54.280 And we can find ourselves showing preferences in an unbiblical way. 00:01:54.280 --> 00:02:02.079 We can find ourselves not becoming welcoming because all of a sudden these new people, it changes the dynamics. 00:02:02.239 --> the idea of being a welcoming church. 00:02:31.639 --> 00:02:35.379 Nobody wants their church to be known for not being welcoming. 00:02:35.879 --> 00:02:37.280 Nobody wants that. 00:02:37.659 --> 00:02:43.259 But at the same time, we don't want to actually be the ones who are making people feel comfortable. 00:02:43.519 --> 00:02:48.060 We don't want to actually be the ones who are putting ourselves out there. 00:02:48.060 --> 00:02:51.740 And when I think about this, I'm reminded of a church that I was serving in at one time. 00:02:51.920 --> 00:02:53.979 Not here, but it was a church that I was serving in. 00:02:54.259 --> 00:02:58.539 And there was this group of teens that was playing basketball in the parking lot. 00:02:58.920 --> 00:03:00.080 And somebody comes in. 00:03:00.140 --> 00:03:04.659 They says, somebody really needs to go out there and invite these teens in. 00:03:04.740 --> 00:03:06.360 They need to invite them to church. 00:03:06.379 --> 00:03:12.439 Because it was obvious by their actions, by the language that they were sharing with one another, 00:03:12.599 --> 00:03:15.680 that they weren't typically people who go to church. 00:03:15.680 --> 00:03:18.360 And so we had someone come in and he comes right up to me. 00:03:18.719 --> 00:03:23.099 And I guess because I was on staff there, say, somebody needs to go invite them to church. 00:03:23.420 --> 00:03:25.060 And so I go out there and invite them to church. 00:03:25.140 --> 00:03:27.640 But then I began thinking about, you're right, somebody does. 00:03:27.700 --> 00:03:31.340 But that's something that we all need to take responsibility for. 00:03:31.400 --> 00:03:34.360 That's something that we all need to be a part of. 00:03:34.719 --> 00:03:41.319 This is a command that we must all take responsibility for and actively participate in. 00:03:41.319 --> 00:03:47.739 And so our passage today addresses the issue of showing partiality and favoritism. 00:03:48.239 --> 00:03:54.659 James, a leader in the early church, wants to make sure we know that in the kingdom of God, 00:03:54.799 --> 00:03:56.919 there's no place for partiality. 00:03:57.239 --> 00:03:59.099 There's no place for favoritism. 00:03:59.219 --> 00:04:05.139 And so if you have a copy of God's Word, I want to invite you to open with me to James chapter 2. 00:04:05.299 --> 00:04:07.780 And we're going to read the first 13 verses. 00:04:07.780 --> 00:04:13.280 So James chapter 2 verses 1 through 13, this is what the Word of the Lord says. 00:04:13.360 --> 00:04:14.140 It says this, 00:04:14.140 --> 00:04:24.680 My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 00:04:25.339 --> 00:04:29.699 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, 00:04:30.079 --> 00:04:33.540 and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 00:04:33.720 --> 00:04:37.399 and you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing, every single thing. 00:06:16.360 --> 00:06:20.340 But there are a few questions that I want us to ask ourselves 00:06:20.340 --> 00:06:24.040 as we think through the problem that James addresses here, 00:06:24.100 --> 00:06:26.580 this problem of partiality. 00:06:26.840 --> 00:06:29.480 And the first question that I want us to look at today, 00:06:30.040 --> 00:06:30.720 this morning, 00:06:30.960 --> 00:06:31.660 is this. 00:06:32.060 --> 00:06:34.560 What are you captivated by? 00:06:35.120 --> 00:06:36.540 What are you captivated by? 00:06:36.620 --> 00:06:38.600 What are we captivated by? 00:06:38.819 --> 00:06:41.540 And we see this from James 2, 1 through 7 here, 00:06:41.600 --> 00:06:45.020 but I want us to pay particular attention to James 2, 1. 00:06:45.019 --> 00:06:45.519 It says, 00:06:46.060 --> 00:06:46.879 My brothers, 00:06:47.459 --> 00:06:52.399 show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, 00:06:52.879 --> 00:06:54.919 the Lord of glory. 00:06:55.519 --> 00:06:56.819 Much of this section, 00:06:56.939 --> 00:06:58.199 verses 1 through 13, 00:06:58.399 --> 00:07:01.319 can be summed up with this one verse. 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:05.079 Don't show favoritism or partiality to anyone 00:07:05.079 --> 00:07:08.060 because Jesus is the Lord of glory, 00:07:08.539 --> 00:07:11.399 the only one who is worthy of glory. 00:07:11.399 --> 00:07:12.000 You see, 00:07:12.079 --> 00:07:16.159 when we ascribe glory to people based on their financial status, 00:07:16.679 --> 00:07:19.839 we are being captivated by the things of this world 00:07:19.839 --> 00:07:22.699 and not the one who created this world. 00:07:23.219 --> 00:07:26.399 If we start showing and ascribing glory to people 00:07:26.399 --> 00:07:30.399 and giving preference to those who have means, 00:07:30.500 --> 00:07:34.199 then what we're doing is we're putting more glory on the things of this world 00:07:34.199 --> 00:07:36.599 than the one who created the world. 00:07:36.600 --> 00:07:37.800 And in our passage, 00:07:37.960 --> 00:07:41.040 James goes on to give an example of what this would look like. 00:07:41.379 --> 00:07:41.700 He says, 00:08:01.660 that person's a person of means. 00:08:01.660 --> 00:08:02.680 And in fact, 00:08:02.800 --> 00:08:04.680 there's rumors that are told that, 00:08:04.960 --> 00:08:06.640 that there were places where you could go 00:08:06.640 --> 00:08:08.900 and rent gold rings to wear 00:08:08.900 --> 00:08:11.400 if you were going somewhere to try to impress somebody. 00:08:11.720 --> 00:08:13.540 I guess much like people use enterprise 00:08:13.540 --> 00:08:15.640 or in a sports car to go to their high school reunion. 00:08:16.140 --> 00:08:16.440 And so, 00:08:16.720 --> 00:08:18.300 and so invited to every Sunday school class we offer. 00:08:39.659 --> 00:08:41.419 He's given his own parking place 00:08:41.419 --> 00:08:43.159 and make sure that he gets a guest back. 00:08:43.500 --> 00:08:45.819 Everyone wants to invite them to lunch, 00:08:45.840 --> 00:08:46.639 to go with them. 00:08:47.019 --> 00:08:49.620 Then there's another person that walks in 00:08:49.620 --> 00:08:53.519 and this person is dressed in shabby clothes, 00:08:53.600 --> 00:08:54.279 that it says. 00:08:54.279 --> 00:08:57.720 This person doesn't look as impressive on the outside 00:08:57.720 --> 00:08:58.659 as someone who, 00:08:58.740 --> 00:09:00.600 who maybe can contribute to life. 00:09:00.679 --> 00:09:02.339 This is not a person of means. 00:09:02.459 --> 00:09:06.939 It's never going to be a large contributor of finances to the church. 00:09:07.019 --> 00:09:09.939 And instead of rolling out the red carpet, 00:09:10.399 --> 00:09:13.819 you ask the person to stand over there wealth, skin color, background, 00:11:22.159 --> 00:11:24.879 or external aspects of a person. 00:11:25.019 --> 00:11:28.179 Now, hopefully not, but some of you may think, 00:11:28.299 --> 00:11:30.000 is this really a big deal? 00:11:30.139 --> 00:11:32.039 Is this really an issue that we need to spend 00:11:32.039 --> 00:11:33.600 a whole week talking about? 00:11:34.240 --> 00:11:49.459 --> 00:11:52.519 He is meant to manifest in his daily life, 00:11:52.599 --> 00:11:53.759 in this cruel world, 00:11:54.139 --> 00:11:57.479 something of the characteristics of God himself. 00:11:58.179 --> 00:12:01.679 He is meant to live as the Lord Jesus Christ lived, 00:12:01.879 --> 00:12:05.519 to follow the pattern and to imitate that example. 00:12:05.519 --> 00:12:08.539 You see, when we set our eyes on Jesus, 00:12:08.899 --> 00:12:11.519 when we see him as our greatest treasure, 00:12:11.819 --> 00:12:12.799 then all of a sudden, 00:12:12.879 -->
