challenge number one. 00:07:35.899 --> 00:07:36.899 Being shunned. 00:07:36.899 --> 00:07:44.599 In verses 1-4, Jesus echoes what we were looking at last week. 00:07:46.379 --> 00:07:55.179 And last week, at the end of John 15, I tried to convince you of something from the Scriptures. 00:07:57.179 --> 00:07:59.799 This is what Jesus was trying to sober us up towards. 00:07:59.800 --> 00:08:06.879 That the result of abiding in Jesus and bearing fruit to the glory of God will very well get you hated by the world. 00:08:09.819 --> 00:08:20.100 And we're being told here we are to be witnesses to the very people that will hate us on account of Jesus' name. 00:08:20.100 --> 00:08:27.340 In 16-2, we read, they will put you out of the synagogues. 00:08:28.640 --> 00:08:30.760 They is another way of talking about the world. 00:08:30.879 --> 00:08:33.820 Now, the planet Earth doesn't hate you. 00:08:34.980 --> 00:08:39.379 It's sinful humanity and organized rebellion against God that will hate Pharisees couldn't believe it. 00:09:14.699 --> 00:09:16.100 And so they call his parents in. 00:09:16.220 --> 00:09:22.959 And in 9-22, we are told the parents wouldn't, they wouldn't even come close to confessing Jesus as the Christ. 00:09:24.120 --> 00:09:28.360 Because the Pharisees had threatened everyone that they'd be put out of the synagogues if they did. 00:09:31.379 --> 00:09:35.939 Now, today, we're not living in fear of being put out of our synagogues, are we? 00:09:36.899 --> 00:09:49.519 We fear a different kind of shunning, whether that's online, or whether that's in your family or in your workplace, your kids' athletics teams. 00:09:52.019 --> 00:09:54.600 We fear getting pushed out. 00:09:55.919 --> 00:10:00.399 We fear of being the object of ridicule of other people. 00:10:01.159 --> 00:10:02.379 We fear being shunned. 00:10:04.299 --> 00:10:06.240 And that's not all Jesus has to say here. 00:10:07.899 --> 00:10:09.120 He goes even further. 00:10:09.500 --> 00:10:13.860 He says, indeed, the hour is coming when whoever kills you will think he's offering service to God. 00:10:17.059 --> 00:10:23.500 Did you know that 10 of the 11 disciples that Jesus is speaking to right here died martyrs' deaths, 00:10:24.100 --> 00:10:27.439 proclaiming Jesus is the Christ, died and was raised? 00:10:27.440 --> 00:10:35.180 And the 11th, John, who's writing this, was apparently boiled in oil, but survived it. 00:10:37.840 --> 00:10:44.120 Why would the world want to kill the disciples? 00:10:44.120 --> 00:10:48.720 And it's not just disciples way back in the first century. 00:10:48.720 --> 00:10:54.580 We have brothers and sisters all around the world who are being killed today for Christ. 00:10:56.220 --> 00:10:59.620 By people who think that they're 00:11:23.040 Now, imagine if you are one of the disciples hearing this at this moment. 00:11:24.379 --> 00:11:31.259 And I'm guessing, like if you're Matthew, you turn to Peter and you'd be like, 00:11:31.519 --> 00:11:35.300 did he just say, whoever kills you? 00:11:36.800 --> 00:11:37.180 Kill? 00:11:38.659 --> 00:11:40.840 I can get shunned. 00:11:41.740 --> 00:11:42.540 But killed? 00:11:42.539 --> 00:11:49.360 In just minutes from Jesus speaking this, 00:11:50.379 --> 00:11:53.539 his disciples, Jesus' disciples will abandon him. 00:11:56.039 --> 00:12:01.120 They will abandon Jesus out of fear for their own lives. 00:12:02.419 --> 00:12:03.980 Jesus knew what would happen. 00:12:06.240 --> 00:12:08.699 But he also says in 16.1, he says, 00:12:08.700 --> 00:12:13.000 I have said all these things to you to keep you from falling away, 00:12:13.160 --> 00:12:14.300 to keep you from stumbling. 00:12:15.780 --> 00:12:19.440 And so here they, in just minutes, they will flee Jesus. 00:12:21.480 --> 00:12:23.160 But in a matter of days, 00:12:23.440 --> 00:12:26.040 there will be an incredible transformation that takes place. 00:12:27.379 --> 00:12:34.660 These fearful 00:13:16.440 --> 00:13:18.820 That they get to suffer for the name of Jesus. 00:13:20.160 --> 00:13:21.980 What does that? 00:13:23.240 --> 00:13:25.220 Who does that? 00:13:25.220 --> 00:13:35.300 Who changes a person's heart from being fearful to joyful in the midst of being shunned? 00:13:36.740 --> 00:13:37.840 It's the advantage. 00:13:39.300 --> 00:13:40.560 It's the Holy Spirit.
