be outside any time yesterday, maybe that's what made you stop to pause, to wonder, to see the power of a storm, perhaps. 00:05:32.840 --> 00:05:35.840 We were up in Fort Rose up north last week. 00:05:36.680 --> 00:05:39.800 We took a walk in the nighttime. 00:05:40.560 --> 00:05:47.720 We were on a particular path, and there was a moment where there was no streetlights, and we looked up, and wonderful works on display and we see them, 00:06:10.400 --> 00:06:15.740 it's good to stop, to wonder, and to worship. 00:06:15.740 --> 00:06:20.199 And I want to suggest that that's Luke's goal for us. 00:06:20.319 --> 00:06:26.920 In Acts chapter 11, he wants to show us that God is working, and He is doing wonderful things. 00:06:27.680 --> 00:06:31.939 He's bringing the Gentiles into the story of salvation. 00:06:32.780 --> 00:06:40.199 We're discovering that the rescuing love of God through Jesus, it spreads all around the globe. 00:06:40.199 --> 00:06:43.379 And He shows us that so that we might worship. 00:06:44.800 --> 00:06:47.699 He takes us back to the Cornelius story. 00:06:48.379 --> 00:06:49.979 We were in it a couple of weeks ago. 00:06:50.199 --> 00:06:53.120 This vital moment in the mission of Jesus. 00:06:53.339 --> 00:06:57.620 And it becomes crystal clear, as Peter gives us a recap, 00:06:58.539 --> 00:07:05.180 that this is God working by His grace and for His glory. 00:07:05.180 --> 00:07:07.180 It's a great chapter. 00:07:07.280 --> 00:07:11.500 It's a chapter, actually, that can help us to answer some questions that you may be asking 00:07:11.500 --> 00:07:13.620 or some questions you may have asked. 00:07:14.639 --> 00:07:16.100 Sometimes it's asked in history. 00:07:16.199 --> 00:07:21.300 Well, what explains the growth of Christianity within the Roman Empire? 00:07:22.040 --> 00:07:24.199 The initial signs don't seem very promising. 00:07:24.360 --> 00:07:28.620 You have Jesus, and He is crucified, and that seems humiliating. 00:07:28.620 --> 00:07:33.139 There is this small group of 12 ragtag disciples. 00:07:34.319 --> 00:07:37.720 And they face a lot of opposition and persecution. 00:07:38.160 --> 00:07:44.040 And yet, within 200 to 300 years, it spreads and dominates the empire. 00:07:44.220 --> 00:07:48.959 And today, there are hundreds of millions of people who proclaim that Jesus is Lord. 00:07:50.259 --> 00:07:53.899 The deepest, most foundational explanation to all of that? 00:07:54.579 --> 00:07:55.939 God is working. 00:07:55.939 --> 00:08:00.160 But it helps to answer the question at the personal level as well. 00:08:00.319 --> 00:08:05.120 When perhaps we're asked, well, what difference does Jesus make to your life anyway? 00:08:06.360 --> 00:08:11.459 What difference does it make to a group of people to have Jesus as their Lord? 00:08:12.360 --> 00:08:14.659 Acts 11 gives an amazingly positive answer. 00:08:15.879 --> 00:08:20.459 Because we begin to see there is in the gospel, the good news of Jesus, 00:08:20.639 --> 00:08:24.399 the power to begin the ending of prejudice. 00:08:24.399 --> 00:08:33.299 We have, with the reality of the risen Jesus, the courage to go on mission to spread His good news. 00:08:34.579 --> 00:08:39.539 And we see this wonderful capacity, when people love Jesus, 00:08:40.279 --> 00:08:45.379 to love one another across difference, and to share good gifts. 00:08:45.379 --> 00:08:47.939 So, Jesus is building His church. 00:08:48.480 --> 00:08:50.559 The global kingdom is crossing barriers. 00:08:51.059 --> 00:08:55.360 A multicultural family of God is being born. 00:08:55.840 --> 00:09:00.500 And we have an opportunity to stand back and to worship our God. 00:09:01.320 --> 00:09:02.939 So, let's see three things. 00:09:03.019 --> 00:09:04.700 Three evidences that God is working. 00:09:04.840 --> 00:09:07.379 First of all, the ending of prejudice. 00:09:07.379 --> 00:09:10.480 And this takes us back to the Cornelius story. 00:09:10.879 --> 00:09:13.460 We looked at it in detail a couple of weeks ago. 00:09:14.019 --> 00:09:19.439 But here, back in the first four verses of chapter 11, we see what's happening. 00:09:20.279 --> 00:09:24.659 So, we're told that these Gentiles, so non-Jewish people, have received God's Word. 00:09:25.240 --> 00:09:27.399 They have been saved by Jesus. 00:09:27.759 --> 00:09:33.379 The gospel has crossed the great dividing line, the great barrier, in that day. 00:09:33.379 --> 00:09:37.679 And we might expect celebration to break out. 00:09:38.019 --> 00:09:39.919 But instead, what does Peter meet? 00:09:40.679 --> 00:09:46.240 When Peter went up to Jerusalem, the circumcised believers criticized him. 00:09:46.559 --> 00:09:51.480 You know, today, this would be Peter coming back and discovering this firestorm of protest, 00:09:51.620 --> 00:09:53.059 that Twitter is blowing up. 00:09:53.179 --> 00:09:55.500 Peter is being threatened with being canceled, 00:09:55.879 --> 00:10:00.960 because he's gone to eat with people from another culture. 00:10:00.960 --> 00:10:02.960 Peter is being threatened with people from another culture. 00:10:02.960 --> 00:10:09.840 The people of God had always been marked out by food laws and by circumcision. 00:10:10.740 --> 00:10:17.540 And they were told to avoid others who didn't share that, that they were considered unclean. 00:10:19.180 --> 00:10:25.139 And so, we see that this, over time, had become a prejudice that had blurred people's vision 00:10:25.139 --> 00:10:28.519 to the reality that God always wanted His kingdom to be global. 00:10:28.519 --> 00:10:35.960 And so, we have these Christians who cannot celebrate the fact that God's Word has come to another people group. 00:10:36.699 --> 00:10:40.879 And they're suspicious of Peter because they think he's broken the rules. 00:10:41.039 --> 00:10:48.659 And so, it's really important for Peter to tell the story in order to show this is God's work, this is God's plan. 00:10:48.659 --> 00:10:56.579 And so, Luke takes the time to repeat the Cornelius story so we do not miss how big and important this is, 00:10:56.679 --> 00:11:02.759 that Jesus has come to be a Savior, not just for some people, but for all people. 00:11:04.100 --> 00:11:08.519 So, again, just to very briefly kind of see it in verses 5 to 10, 00:11:08.939 --> 00:11:12.299 he tells them of that vision from God that Peter had. 00:11:12.399 --> 00:11:15.439 There was the blanket that came, the sheet that came down. 00:11:15.440 --> 00:11:17.740 There was clean meat, there was unclean meat. 00:11:18.040 --> 00:11:19.400 Peter is told to take some. 00:11:19.480 --> 00:11:22.140 He says, no, I've never eaten anything that's unclean. 00:11:22.520 --> 00:11:28.080 And God says three times, do not call anything impure that God has made clean. 00:11:28.860 --> 00:11:33.200 I want us to think about that sheet with the mixed meats being a bit like the church. 00:11:34.420 --> 00:11:39.940 That by God's design, the church is going to be made up of all different kinds of people. 00:11:39.940 --> 00:11:48.420 And that mix-up, that's all part of God's plan, and it's good news because it shows the power of God's grace. 00:11:49.820 --> 00:11:53.720 Well, after the vision comes the direction from God. 00:11:53.800 --> 00:11:55.520 Look at verses 11 to 14. 00:11:56.040 --> 00:12:00.760 You find God has directed these servants of Cornelius to arrive at Peter's house, 00:12:00.940 --> 00:12:07.760 and then the Spirit speaks to Peter, telling him to go with the men to visit Cornelius. 00:12:07.759 --> 00:12:11.080 And notice verse 14. 00:12:11.759 --> 00:12:15.360 We get some new information, important information. 00:12:16.319 --> 00:12:19.379 Sent to Joppa for Simon who's called Peter. 00:12:19.480 --> 00:12:20.539 That's what Cornelius is told. 00:12:20.879 --> 00:12:27.319 He will bring you a message through which you and all your household will be saved. 00:12:27.960 --> 00:12:34.220 So Cornelius needs to hear this message about Jesus so that he might be saved. 00:12:34.220 --> 00:12:41.460 Last time we met Cornelius, we discovered he's very religious, he's very devout, he's doing the right things, he's worshiping God. 00:12:41.759 --> 00:12:42.820 But that's not enough. 00:12:44.680 --> 00:12:47.040 It's not enough for us to be religious people. 00:12:47.500 --> 00:12:49.580 It's not enough for us to attend church services. 00:12:49.740 --> 00:12:51.519 It's not enough for us to read our Bibles. 00:12:51.519 --> 00:12:56.860 We need to personally know Jesus as our Lord and Savior. 00:12:57.740 --> 00:13:02.799 We need to personally turn away from sin to place our trust in him. 00:13:02.840 --> 00:13:06.340 And that's what Cornelius does as he hears the message. 00:13:07.519 --> 00:13:09.199 Verse 15 and 16. 00:13:10.139 --> 00:13:13.340 We discover the action from God. 00:13:13.919 --> 00:13:17.779 That after Peter begins to speak, what do we hear in verse 15? 00:13:17.779 --> 00:13:23.579 The Holy Spirit came on them as he had come on us at the beginning. 00:13:24.620 --> 00:13:29.699 And Peter reminds those listening, this is just as the Lord Jesus promised. 00:13:30.199 --> 00:13:34.259 This is God's plan of salvation working. 00:13:35.679 --> 00:13:38.039 And so Peter's conclusion is very direct. 00:13:38.919 --> 00:13:42.980 So if God gave them the same gift he gave us who believed in the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:13:42.980 --> 00:13:46.600 who was I to think that I could stand in God's way? 00:13:47.779 --> 00:13:50.959 They believed the same gospel, the same good news, 00:13:51.000 --> 00:13:53.879 because they're believing in the same Jesus as Lord. 00:13:54.679 --> 00:13:57.259 And now they've received exactly the same gift, 00:13:57.399 --> 00:13:59.740 because God's Holy Spirit has come on them. 00:14:00.199 --> 00:14:02.299 And so Peter is left with two options, isn't he? 00:14:02.299 --> 00:14:04.000 He can either oppose God, 00:14:05.000 --> 00:14:07.559 or he can worship God and participate. 00:14:07.679 --> 00:14:08.799 And that's what he does. 00:14:08.799 --> 00:14:12.419 And when they hear this, verse 18, 00:14:13.359 --> 00:14:14.359 no more objections. 00:14:15.359 --> 00:14:17.079 Instead, they praise God, 00:14:18.379 --> 00:14:18.579 saying, 00:14:18.759 --> 00:14:20.019 So then even to Gentiles, 00:14:20.099 --> 00:14:22.299 God has granted repentance that leads to life. 00:14:22.439 --> 00:14:25.559 This is when criticism stops and praise begins, 00:14:25.559 --> 00:14:27.620 because it becomes blatantly obvious 00:14:27.620 --> 00:14:31.120 that God has been working. 00:14:31.779 --> 00:14:34.019 And so hearts are being softened. 00:14:34.019 --> 00:14:38.460 And isn't this something that we need in our world today? 00:14:39.980 --> 00:14:43.879 Don't we see and hear so much of the dark stain of prejudice? 00:14:45.079 --> 00:14:48.860 Whether we hear about the undercover reports of the views of politicians, 00:14:49.539 --> 00:14:54.299 or whether we're watching on our screens violent protests against migrants, 00:14:54.299 --> 00:14:59.659 whether we see, hear, or experience racism, 00:15:00.139 --> 00:15:01.559 or sectarianism, 00:15:02.639 --> 00:15:05.599 where we recognize a growing intolerance of people 00:15:05.599 --> 00:15:07.279 with different views and backgrounds, 00:15:07.339 --> 00:15:09.479 we recognize we need something better. 00:15:10.839 --> 00:15:13.139 And that something better is the power of the gospel. 00:15:14.399 --> 00:15:18.279 And what we see in Acts chapter 11 is that God's grace works. 00:15:18.279 --> 00:15:23.199 God's grace has the power to make very different people 00:15:23.199 --> 00:15:25.919 one in Christ Jesus. 00:15:27.659 --> 00:15:31.679 That those other identity markers that we might have, 00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:33.379 that we might place on ourselves, 00:15:33.480 --> 00:15:34.839 or we might place on others, 00:15:35.240 --> 00:15:39.720 they are not as important as belonging to Jesus. 00:15:40.819 --> 00:15:44.860 It's what enables a diverse church family to be established. 00:15:44.860 --> 00:15:51.120 No barriers to accepting others in Jesus. 00:15:52.460 --> 00:15:56.919 So this week I read of Palestinian Christians 00:15:56.919 --> 00:16:02.519 and Messianic Jewish Christians praying together. 00:16:03.300 --> 00:16:08.220 And they issued a statement affirming their unity in Christ Jesus, 00:16:08.700 --> 00:16:14.060 even as they were wrestling with deep political and social differences. 00:16:14.860 --> 00:16:17.500 That's evidence that God is working. 00:16:18.620 --> 00:16:20.340 I read this week that in Nigeria, 00:16:20.940 --> 00:16:22.919 there are Christian church members 00:16:22.919 --> 00:16:27.100 who have led people belonging to Boko Haram, 00:16:28.480 --> 00:16:29.659 the fundamentalist group, 00:16:29.919 --> 00:16:31.399 leading them to Christ. 00:16:32.860 --> 00:16:35.399 Having the courage to open their homes 00:16:35.399 --> 00:16:39.139 and their churches to former persecutors. 00:16:39.139 --> 00:16:44.840 That's God's grace at work in people's hearts. 00:16:46.199 --> 00:16:47.840 And that's what we see in Acts 11, 00:16:47.960 --> 00:16:50.799 God working to soften hearts to make enemies friends. 00:16:52.039 --> 00:16:54.460 And it's so important at the local level too. 00:16:54.699 --> 00:16:59.080 We have a vision here in our church to be a multicultural church. 00:16:59.600 --> 00:17:04.299 We want this church to be as diverse as the city in which we live. 00:17:04.299 --> 00:17:08.539 We want anyone to be able to come in here and to feel at home, 00:17:08.639 --> 00:17:10.399 to feel a welcome in Jesus' name. 00:17:10.720 --> 00:17:11.799 And for that to happen, 00:17:12.299 --> 00:17:14.419 we need God to work in our hearts all of Jesus to one another. 00:17:53.579 --> 00:17:55.519 So there's the first evidence that we have. 00:17:55.519 --> 00:17:59.019 God is working to end prejudice and to promote peace 00:17:59.019 --> 00:18:01.099 in and through the gospel. 00:18:02.160 --> 00:18:04.519 And when we see it, we praise God for it. 00:18:05.200 --> 00:18:08.160 And we pray to participate in that. 00:18:09.359 -->
