it's hard to understand what Jesus did, 00:02:40.420 --> 00:02:43.540 but why he did it at all. 00:02:44.879 --> 00:02:46.800 I mean, of all the things Jesus could have done, 00:02:46.939 --> 00:02:51.439 why did he choose to do the first miracle at a small-town wedding? 00:02:52.379 --> 00:02:54.620 And why did it have to involve wine? 00:02:55.740 --> 00:02:56.879 And not just a little. 00:02:57.939 --> 00:03:00.420 Further, the wedding was a human celebration 00:03:00.419 --> 00:03:05.439 with little or no obvious spiritual connotation or application. 00:03:06.579 --> 00:03:09.779 Many preachers of the Bible and Bible teachers 00:03:09.779 --> 00:03:13.299 go to an effort to try to make this text 00:03:13.299 --> 00:03:15.439 into some kind of allegorical story 00:03:15.439 --> 00:03:19.319 about our joy in Christ, which gets better through time. 00:03:20.299 --> 00:03:23.000 But I'm not convinced that was the purpose of the text. 00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:26.099 It's important to know what John is doing 00:03:26.099 --> 00:03:28.379 and why he includes this as he does. 00:03:29.360 --> 00:03:31.479 He began with a thesis statement. 00:03:31.680 --> 00:03:33.879 You've heard Pastor Mike say this a number of times 00:03:33.879 --> 00:03:36.460 from John 1, verses 1 to 18, 00:03:36.879 --> 00:03:40.740 declaring that Jesus is God in human flesh. 00:03:41.680 --> 00:03:45.139 And then the last, toward the end of John's gospel, 00:03:45.580 --> 00:03:47.159 really the theme of the gospel, 00:03:47.400 --> 00:03:49.740 really the purpose for which he wrote the gospel, 00:03:49.740 --> 00:03:54.120 in chapter 20, verse 30 and 31, say this. 00:03:54.560 --> 00:03:59.180 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of his disciples, 00:03:59.780 --> 00:04:01.879 which are not written in this book, 00:04:02.600 --> 00:04:06.140 but these are written so that you may believe 00:04:06.140 --> 00:04:08.640 that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, 00:04:09.200 --> 00:04:13.700 and that by believing, you may have life in his name. 00:04:14.379 --> 00:04:15.560 That's why he wrote the book. 00:04:16.280 --> 00:04:19.420 And that's why he included a number of signs in the book 00:04:19.420 --> 00:04:20.879 to bring us to that conclusion. 00:04:23.460 --> 00:04:27.160 So this first miraculous sign must have been designated 00:04:27.160 --> 00:04:30.780 to make us know who Jesus is 00:04:30.780 --> 00:04:32.900 by seeing something of his glory 00:04:32.900 --> 00:04:36.639 and to respond to his salvation by faith. 00:04:37.500 --> 00:04:40.580 So does this account do that? 00:04:40.660 --> 00:04:41.300 That's the question. 00:04:42.480 --> 00:04:44.379 This account is about a real wedding 00:04:44.379 --> 00:04:47.040 in a real place with real people. 00:04:47.860 --> 00:04:50.660 John specifically picked this miraculous sign 00:04:50.660 --> 00:04:51.439 over many others. 00:04:51.700 --> 00:04:53.500 Jesus did many, many miracles. 00:04:54.400 --> 00:04:55.740 If you read the other gospels, 00:04:55.840 --> 00:04:57.379 you'll see many, many more. 00:04:59.040 --> 00:05:02.260 Why did John pick this one and the ones he picked? 00:05:05.400 --> 00:05:07.939 Well, this would build the framework 00:05:07.939 --> 00:05:10.780 of John's conclusion concerning Jesus 00:05:10.780 --> 00:05:13.000 as the Messiah and the Savior. 00:05:13.000 --> 00:05:16.500 But a bit of background before we continue. 00:05:16.699 --> 00:05:18.939 The seven signs that John recorded, 00:05:19.480 --> 00:05:22.800 which were done in the presence of his disciples, 00:05:23.160 --> 00:05:25.339 were actually all leading up to showing us 00:05:25.339 --> 00:05:28.579 something about who Jesus is, 00:05:28.600 --> 00:05:29.639 that he is the Christ, 00:05:29.740 --> 00:05:31.060 and that by believing in him, 00:05:31.120 --> 00:05:32.279 we might have life through his name. 00:05:32.420 --> 00:05:34.319 So with some help from a commentator 00:05:34.319 --> 00:05:35.800 by the name of Merrill Tenney, 00:05:36.379 --> 00:05:39.259 in an old commentary back many, many years ago, 00:05:39.259 --> 00:05:41.899 he was writing and he was saying 00:05:41.899 --> 00:05:43.279 that this first sign 00:05:43.279 --> 00:05:45.959 actually demonstrated Jesus 00:05:45.959 --> 00:05:48.219 as the master of quality, 00:05:49.759 --> 00:05:52.240 accomplishing instantaneously 00:05:52.240 --> 00:05:54.259 what would have taken months 00:05:54.259 --> 00:05:55.219 to be accomplished. 00:05:59.120 --> 00:06:02.939 And it showed Jesus as the Lord of glory. 00:06:02.939 --> 00:06:06.079 The second sign in John chapter 4, 00:06:06.240 --> 00:06:07.800 healing of the noble man's son, 00:06:08.399 --> 00:06:09.500 that's an interesting one 00:06:09.500 --> 00:06:10.639 because Jesus healed him, 00:06:10.699 --> 00:06:12.100 but he was 20 miles away from him 00:06:12.100 --> 00:06:13.100 when it happened. 00:06:14.759 --> 00:06:16.620 Well, that demonstrated that Jesus 00:06:16.620 --> 00:06:19.199 is the master of space and distance. 00:06:20.079 --> 00:06:22.620 And Jesus healed him with his word. 00:06:23.740 --> 00:06:26.720 And so the first miracle told us something 00:06:26.720 --> 00:06:28.480 about the glory of God. 00:06:29.079 --> 00:06:31.680 The second miracle told us something 00:06:31.680 --> 00:06:34.100 about the true and living word of God. 00:06:34.780 --> 00:06:36.579 The third sign in John chapter 5, 00:06:36.680 --> 00:06:37.939 the healing of the impotent man 00:06:37.939 --> 00:06:40.079 who had been waiting for 38 years 00:06:40.079 --> 00:06:41.400 to be put into the water, 00:06:41.800 --> 00:06:42.860 into the fountain there, 00:06:42.939 --> 00:06:43.840 into the pool, 00:06:44.840 --> 00:06:47.840 demonstrated Jesus as the master of time. 00:06:48.300 --> 00:06:49.960 And it showed us that he was Lord 00:06:49.960 --> 00:06:50.740 over the Sabbath. 00:06:51.240 --> 00:06:53.840 The fourth sign was the feeding of the 5,000. 00:06:55.040 --> 00:06:56.500 Showed us mastery, 00:06:57.579 --> 00:06:58.680 the master of quantity. 00:06:58.680 --> 00:07:02.540 Remember, Jesus took one little boy's snack 00:07:02.540 --> 00:07:04.160 and turned it into enough 00:07:04.160 --> 00:07:07.199 to feed 5,000 men plus women and children. 00:07:08.180 --> 00:07:09.720 What did it tell us about that? 00:07:09.780 --> 00:07:11.379 Well, Jesus actually preached a message 00:07:11.379 --> 00:07:13.100 in the context of that miracle. 00:07:13.740 --> 00:07:15.120 He's the bread of life. 00:07:16.300 --> 00:07:18.160 The fifth sign, walking on water, 00:07:18.439 --> 00:07:19.819 said something about Jesus being 00:07:19.819 --> 00:07:21.899 the master of natural forces. 00:07:22.560 --> 00:07:24.079 Remember, Jesus was in the boat. 00:07:24.840 --> 00:07:25.699 He was asleep. 00:07:25.699 --> 00:07:29.319 Storm, don't you care that we perish? 00:07:29.519 --> 00:07:30.420 Says his disciples. 00:07:31.519 --> 00:07:32.279 He speaks. 00:07:33.259 --> 00:07:35.180 The waters go flat. 00:07:36.039 --> 00:07:36.479 Peace. 00:07:37.740 --> 00:07:39.139 Jesus is the God of peace. 00:07:40.740 --> 00:07:41.439 The sixth sign, 00:07:41.539 --> 00:07:43.199 the healing of a man born blind, 00:07:44.019 --> 00:07:44.919 answered the question 00:07:44.919 --> 00:07:46.599 why this man was afflicted. 00:07:46.819 --> 00:07:49.240 Did he sin or was it because of his parents? 00:07:50.519 --> 00:07:52.000 Well, this demonstrated Jesus 00:07:52.000 --> 00:07:53.839 as the master of misfortune. 00:07:53.839 --> 00:07:56.279 But showed us that Jesus 00:07:56.279 --> 00:07:58.199 is the light of the world. 00:07:59.399 --> 00:08:00.199 The seventh sign, 00:08:00.299 --> 00:08:01.939 the raising of Lazarus from the dead, 00:08:02.319 --> 00:08:03.500 demonstrated that Jesus 00:08:03.500 --> 00:08:06.799 is master of death or over death. 00:08:07.120 --> 00:08:09.000 He is the resurrection and the life. 00:08:09.319 --> 00:08:11.179 So these seven signs together 00:08:11.179 --> 00:08:13.259 were chosen that we might believe 00:08:13.259 --> 00:08:14.719 that Jesus is the Christ, 00:08:15.419 --> 00:08:16.219 the Son of God, 00:08:16.279 --> 00:08:17.079 and that by believing 00:08:17.079 --> 00:08:18.699 we may have life in his name. 00:08:18.699 --> 00:08:20.899 So let's find out 00:08:20.899 --> 00:08:25.199 what there is about this first sign 00:08:25.199 --> 00:08:27.459 that will lead us to that declare Jesus 00:08:40.759 --> 00:08:42.779 to be the Lord of glory, 00:08:43.659 --> 00:08:45.960 drawing us to believe 00:08:45.960 --> 00:08:47.540 that he is the Christ? 00:08:48.720 --> 00:08:49.740 Is that what this does? 00:08:53.680 --> 00:08:55.379 I suggest that this miracle 00:08:55.379 --> 00:08:57.139 establishes the base, 00:08:58.180 --> 00:08:59.180 the groundwork, 00:08:59.440 --> 00:09:00.960 on which we are going to build 00:09:00.960 --> 00:09:02.900 the case of who Jesus is, 00:09:03.620 --> 00:09:05.139 that of his glory. 00:09:06.620 --> 00:09:08.080 This case is built 00:09:08.080 --> 00:09:09.200 on a human connection, 00:09:09.580 --> 00:09:11.879 it's built on the miracle itself, 00:09:11.879 --> 00:09:14.039 and then the revelation 00:09:14.039 00:09:27.539 that Jesus performs 00:09:27.539 --> 00:09:28.899 is not in a synagogue, 00:09:29.919 --> 00:09:31.039 it's not in the temple, 00:09:31.700 --> 00:09:33.100 it's not at a funeral 00:09:33.100 --> 00:09:34.399 raising the dead, 00:09:34.939 --> 00:09:36.519 it's not in an infirmary 00:09:36.519 --> 00:09:37.679 healing the sick, 00:09:38.340 --> 00:09:39.120 it's at a wedding 00:09:39.120 --> 00:09:40.779 in a small town 00:09:40.779 --> 00:09:41.779 not far from the town 00:09:41.779 --> 00:09:42.899 where Jesus grew up. 00:09:43.799 --> 00:09:44.860 It was in a place
