00:00:48.299 --> 00:00:55.960 Now there is in Jerusalem, near the Sheep Gate, a pool, which in Aramaic is called Bethesda, and which is surrounded by five covered colonnades. 00:00:57.020 --> 00:01:02.320 Here a great number of disabled people used to lie, the blind, the lame, the paralyzed. 00:01:03.579 --> 00:01:06.400 One who was there had been an invalid for 38 years. 00:01:07.240 --> Gospel, right, with a focus on our church's mission. 00:03:30.099 --> 00:03:36.340 Christ's church exists to lead people into deeper relationships with Christ and His church through community for C. 00:03:42.460 --> 00:03:47.219 What does it actually mean to have a deeper relationship with Christ for the city? 00:03:47.219 --> 00:03:55.840 You know, for me, growing up in the suburbs, I didn't have much of a vision for the city and definitely not an appreciation for it. 00:03:55.879 --> 00:04:03.360 Actually, for a lot of us, you know, second and third generation Chinese Americans here in California, especially during like the 80s and the 90s, 00:04:03.360 --> 00:04:11.460 our parents and our grandparents worked super hard to move us out of the cities, out of San Francisco, out of Oakland, out of L.A. 00:04:11.460 --> 00:04:19.000 and into the suburbs for cleaner streets, less crime, more space, more parking, better schools, and way more Costco's, right? 00:04:20.120 --> 00:04:22.379 And that was like the narrative of my family. 00:04:22.660 --> 00:04:31.300 My parents went to Oakland High, then after Cal and UCSF, they got out and they raised me in the suburbs of San Leandro, not too far away from here. 00:04:31.300 --> 00:04:36.579 My grandparents soon followed after them, moving into Alameda, and that's just what we did. 00:04:36.639 --> 00:04:37.639 We left the city. 00:04:37.860 --> 00:04:40.600 We left the urban centers, and we never really looked back. 00:04:41.439 --> 00:04:43.840 And honestly, I had a great suburban childhood. 00:04:44.100 --> 00:04:45.400 I love Costco, all right? 00:04:46.040 --> 00:04:54.540 My suburban, middle-class, Asian-American evangelical upbringing, it's something I'm super grateful for, and I wouldn't trade it for a different story. 00:04:54.540 --> 00:04:59.620 It set me up well for college, where I found another Asian-American church and campus ministry to be a part of, 00:04:59.620 --> 00:05:01.079 and I just continued to grow. 00:05:01.639 --> 00:05:09.420 So by the time I graduated from UC Irvine, I was healthy, and I was happy, and I felt like I really had a solid foundation in so many ways. 00:05:09.939 --> 00:05:15.259 I felt like I had my up and out down, up with God, in with His people, and out with the world. 00:05:15.379 --> 00:05:16.699 I was in the Word daily. 00:05:16.780 --> 00:05:17.540 I was in prayer daily. 00:05:17.579 --> 00:05:18.519 I was memorizing Scripture. 00:05:19.079 --> 00:05:20.000 I loved my church. 00:05:20.100 --> 00:05:21.100 I was being discipled. 00:05:21.160 --> 00:05:22.120 I was making disciples. 00:05:22.120 --> 00:05:26.420 We were evangelizing, sharing our faith with people outside of the church. 00:05:26.740 --> 00:05:32.959 I was practicing all the piety that had been modeled for me from the beginning, and I thought I was doing all right. 00:05:34.139 --> 00:05:42.399 And yet, toward the end of my time in Orange County, you know, even with all my spiritual disciplines and all this strong Christian community I had, 00:05:42.399 --> 00:05:49.359 I was beginning to feel like something was still seriously missing in the way I was practicing my Christian faith. 00:05:49.519 --> 00:05:53.719 Like, I remember thinking, well, is this all that Christianity is? 00:05:53.799 --> 00:05:59.679 Just go to church, practice spiritual disciplines, hang out with others who are trying to do the same, 00:05:59.759 --> 00:06:03.019 and then when we're not at church, just try to tell people about Jesus? 00:06:03.019 --> 00:06:11.659 I remember starting to think, it all just felt too clean, too neat and tidy, too contained, even sterile. 00:06:12.819 --> 00:06:24.039 And at the same time, I was also listening to a lot of Tim Keller, and he was preaching a Christianity that was far bigger than the individualistic personal piety that I had had. 00:06:24.099 --> 00:06:28.599 He was preaching a God who was Lord over every square inch of creation, 00:06:28.600 --> 00:06:34.700 a Jesus whose life and lordship had profound implications for every sphere of culture and society. 00:06:35.900 --> 00:06:43.580 And so, what I began to realize was that my faith, my suburban, college-educated, middle-class, Asian-American, evangelical faith, 00:06:44.040 --> 00:06:48.500 while it truly was a faith, an authentic and beautiful faith in its own way, 00:06:48.500 --> 00:06:52.620 I was coming to realize that at the same time, this faith of mine, 00:06:52.620 --> 00:07:00.100 it still hadn't significantly encountered or engaged with the dark depths of the world's brokenness. 00:07:00.259 --> 00:07:04.740 Like, my faith was real, but also super sheltered and very inexperienced. 00:07:04.800 --> 00:07:09.840 It hadn't yet grasped the comprehensive scope and nature of Jesus' kingdom. 00:07:11.319 --> 00:07:16.340 And so, slowly, I came to realize that Jesus, he demanded not just faith in him as my personal savior, 00:07:16.339 --> 00:07:22.739 but a holistic faith in him as the savior of, like, the cosmos, right, of everything that is broken, 00:07:22.879 --> 00:07:27.060 both in my own life and soul, but also in the rest of creation. 00:07:28.139 --> 00:07:33.019 Christianity was meant to make a difference, not just for individual souls in eternity later, 00:07:33.120 --> 00:07:39.679 but also for whole societies, cultures, and communities now, as a sign of the kingdom of God, here and now. 00:07:39.680 --> 00:07:46.540 So, during my last year or so in Orange County, I began to drive into the city of Santa Ana, 00:07:46.660 --> 00:07:52.160 which is, like, right in the center of Orange County, and Orange County is SoCal's, like, wealthiest county. 00:07:52.900 --> 00:07:58.860 But, Santa Ana, in 2004, was named the most troubled and distressed city in the nation. 00:07:59.879 --> 00:08:05.960 So, I started driving into Santa Ana, serving meals with a group of people who were meeting at the Civic Center to serve the homeless. 00:08:05.959 --> 00:08:11.180 Then I started collecting and passing out clothes, made some connections and contacts, 00:08:11.500 --> 00:08:18.500 and with a few friends, we were even able to help an immigrant man help him find a place to live for a few months, 00:08:18.620 --> 00:08:22.659 get on his feet, find work, and just get into a place of some stability. 00:08:23.939 --> 00:08:28.099 But, you know, the more I spent time out there, getting to know people, 00:08:28.259 --> 00:08:35.000 getting to hear their stories of addiction and family fractures and immigration struggles, 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:37.100 trauma and abuse, mental health challenges, 00:08:38.059 --> 00:08:42.620 I increasingly discovered how raw and real the world was, 00:08:42.700 --> 00:08:46.940 how deep the brokenness can go, how much hurt and pain are out there, 00:08:46.960 --> 00:08:50.100 and how far back it reaches, right, into people's histories. 00:08:50.860 --> 00:08:54.679 But what also struck me was not simply the brokenness, 00:08:55.419 --> 00:09:00.259 but all the ways people were seeking to cope with the brokenness, 00:09:00.259 --> 00:09:03.620 seeking to remedy their pains and their plights, 00:09:04.659 --> 00:09:08.019 drugs, alcohol, unhealthy relationships. 00:09:09.659 --> 00:09:13.860 But, you know, whatever it was that people were looking to to save themselves, 00:09:14.679 --> 00:09:18.559 the more I observed, the more I came to realize that what I was witnessing, 00:09:19.460 --> 00:09:22.960 it wasn't just, you know, people making bad, self-destructive decisions. 00:09:22.960 --> 00:09:30.360 No, these were desperate people making flailing attempts to grab onto, to find, to secure 00:09:30.360 --> 00:09:34.300 really the same thing that we were after in the suburbs, 00:09:34.519 --> 00:09:36.200 the same thing as every human being. 00:09:36.700 --> 00:09:39.639 What all these folks in Santa Ana were after, 00:09:39.780 --> 00:09:42.980 what every single one of us in this room is after is that thing, right, 00:09:43.019 --> 00:09:49.940 that thing that will finally bring about shalom and peace and restoration and wholeness. 00:09:49.940 --> 00:09:54.860 What we're looking for is salvation, and not just salvation from hell later on in the afterlife, 00:09:55.020 --> 00:10:00.540 but salvation from the hellish life that many of us are experiencing in the here and the now. 00:10:02.160 --> 00:10:07.220 That's what we're all reaching for, running to, living by that thing, right, that place, 00:10:07.440 --> 00:10:10.180 that practice that we believe will secure for us, 00:10:10.220 --> 00:10:16.580 or at least get us an inch or two closer to the shalom and the wellness that we're all after. 00:10:16.580 --> 00:10:20.720 That the wholeness that Jesus calls the abundant life. 00:10:21.879 --> 00:10:26.920 But the question is, how's that going for those of us who are seeking it outside of Christ? 00:10:27.840 --> 00:10:28.940 How's it going for us? 00:10:29.600 --> 00:10:33.379 Like, if we're all chasing wellness, and we still haven't secured it, 00:10:34.540 --> 00:10:39.500 what if we're looking in the wrong places, trusting the wrong things to make us whole? 00:10:40.400 --> 00:10:42.879 And that's where we get into John chapter 5. 00:10:43.100 --> 00:10:44.160 Look with me at verse 1. 00:10:44.159 --> 00:10:50.819 Now, here in verse 1, it says that Jesus is heading into Jerusalem for a festival, right? 00:10:51.179 --> 00:10:55.419 So imagine a city bursting at the seams with pilgrims flocking into the city from all over. 00:10:55.759 --> 00:10:56.699 And where's everyone going? 00:10:56.759 --> 00:10:59.839 They're going to the temple, to the center of the city, to the center of their culture, 00:10:59.899 --> 00:11:02.779 the place where God is supposed to dwell. 00:11:03.559 --> 00:11:08.139 And yet here, Jesus is one among tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands, 00:11:08.139 --> 00:11:11.699 all on their way to the most holy place, the place of joy and celebration. 00:11:12.019 --> 00:11:19.340 But his first stop is to a place of ceremonial uncleanness, despair, and suffering. 00:11:20.460 --> 00:11:24.419 Verse 2 tells us that of all the places he could have visited in Jerusalem, 00:11:24.600 --> 00:11:29.080 he goes to the Sheep Gate Pool at Bethesda, where the broken are. 00:11:29.860 --> 00:11:33.659 Verse 3, where a great number of disabled people were lying there, 00:11:33.659 --> 00:11:37.879 the blind, the lame, the paralyzed, some scholars estimate there could have been hundreds, 00:11:37.980 --> 00:11:41.059 maybe even thousands of people gathered at this pool. 00:11:41.799 --> 00:11:42.419 But now why? 00:11:42.980 --> 00:11:45.679 What's so special about this place, this pool? 00:11:46.500 --> 00:11:49.959 Well, if you noticed in the NIV translation that's in your liturgies, 00:11:50.539 --> 00:11:51.379 there's no verse 4. 00:11:51.819 --> 00:11:52.500 Anyone notice that? 00:11:53.219 --> 00:11:54.039 There's no verse 4. 00:11:54.500 --> 00:11:58.059 The King James Version has verse 4, but not the NIV. 00:11:58.220 --> 00:11:59.159 So what's that all about? 00:11:59.159 --> 00:12:04.439 Well, the reason the NIV doesn't include verse 4 is because the earliest, 00:12:04.639 --> 00:12:09.039 the best manuscripts of John's gospel don't actually include verse 4. 00:12:09.339 --> 00:12:13.120 And it's highly likely that the later copies just added verse 4 00:12:13.120 --> 00:12:21.100 to share the common belief of the time that an angel would stir the water at this pool 00:12:21.100 --> 00:12:23.579 and the first person in, they would be healed. 00:12:24.139 --> 00:12:24.199 Okay? 00:12:24.200 --> 00:12:24.240 Okay? 00:12:25.040 --> 00:12:30.040 So while this missing verse 4 probably wasn't part of what John originally wrote, 00:12:30.240 --> 00:12:34.600 it does reflect what people believed about this pool in the first century. 00:12:34.680 --> 00:12:36.360 And we can see that in verse 7, right? 00:12:36.400 --> 00:12:40.220 This man clearly believes in the magical power of this pool. 00:12:41.780 --> 00:12:42.960 So try to picture the scene. 00:12:43.640 --> 00:12:47.280 Tens of thousands entering Jerusalem, all with their sights on the temple, 00:12:47.400 --> 00:12:49.560 many of them coming in through the Sheep Gate, 00:12:49.640 --> 00:12:51.600 which, by the way, was the closest city entrance, 00:12:51.700 --> 00:12:53.259 basically right next door to the temple. 00:12:53.259 --> 00:12:57.559 In fact, it was called the Sheep Gate because this is where they brought the sheep in 00:12:57.559 --> 00:12:59.720 for the sacrifices into the temple. 00:13:00.840 --> 00:13:03.519 So here Jesus is, the Lamb of God, entering by the Sheep Gate. 00:13:04.340 --> 00:13:07.819 And while tens of thousands of others would have just thoughtlessly 00:13:07.819 --> 00:13:12.519 just looked and walked past this unsightly Sheep Gate pool area 00:13:12.519 --> 00:13:15.340 with all these sick, lame, paralyzed people, 00:13:15.740 --> 00:13:18.379 eyes forward, just fixed on their temple destination, 00:13:18.500 --> 00:13:19.779 just minding their own business, right? 00:13:19.779 --> 00:13:22.659 Keeping to themselves like they probably did every single year, 00:13:22.879 --> 00:13:24.000 being blind to the blind, 00:13:24.399 --> 00:13:28.559 letting these helpless and hopeless, lame, and paralyzed people become invisible to them. 00:13:29.919 --> 00:13:33.699 Jesus is not about to overlook the poor and the suffering 00:13:33.699 --> 00:13:36.819 on his way to commune with God at the temple. 00:13:37.879 --> 00:13:39.179 He's not that kind of a God. 00:13:39.519 --> 00:13:40.639 He's not that kind of a man. 00:13:41.079 --> 00:13:43.679 Jesus doesn't avert his gaze from the suffering of the city. 00:13:43.679 --> 00:13:48.179 No, when Jesus comes to the city, he comes to the whole city, the real city. 00:13:48.559 --> 00:13:50.739 He stops at Santa Ana before he goes to Hollywood. 00:13:51.239 --> 00:13:54.439 He stops in the Tenderloin before he goes to the Golden Gate Bridge. 00:13:55.379 --> 00:13:55.819 And why? 00:13:56.739 --> 00:13:59.879 Because when Jesus sees the many lying by this pool, 00:13:59.959 --> 00:14:01.799 he doesn't just see the unlucky ones. 00:14:02.159 --> 00:14:04.919 He doesn't just see the sad, suffering minority. 00:14:04.919 --> 00:14:09.759 And he also doesn't see, you know, just superstitious people undeserving of his help. 00:14:09.819 --> 00:14:14.379 Because look at how foolish they are for waiting upon this magic water to heal them. 00:14:14.419 --> 00:14:14.819 How pathetic. 00:14:15.139 --> 00:14:15.360 No. 00:14:16.479 --> 00:14:19.240 His eyes and his heart are filled with compassion. 00:14:19.620 --> 00:14:22.579 And what he sees are thousands of people 00:14:22.579 --> 00:14:27.240 who are just wearily groping and grasping for anything, 00:14:27.599 --> 00:14:30.240 anything, even magical angel water. 00:14:30.240 --> 00:14:34.940 Because that's how desperate they are in this city. 00:14:36.759 --> 00:14:42.639 Then, out of all these people, Jesus fixes his eyes on one man. 00:14:43.480 --> 00:14:44.039 Verse 5. 00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:48.379 One who was there had been an invalid for 38 years. 00:14:49.100 --> 00:14:51.120 And man, that's how old I am. 00:14:51.139 --> 00:14:51.659 I'm 38. 00:14:52.180 --> 00:14:54.879 That's my entire lifetime that he'd been sick. 00:14:55.500 --> 00:14:59.500 That would have been more than the entirety of a lot of people's lives in antiquity. 00:14:59.500 --> 00:15:03.059 So, basically, this guy's been stuck for an ancient lifetime. 00:15:03.519 --> 00:15:03.620 Okay? 00:15:05.240 --> 00:15:07.879 Now, imagine how he'd spent those 38 years. 00:15:07.960 00:16:11.319 He's been waiting to get well for 38 years and he's so desperate to get well. 00:16:11.419 --> 00:16:15.019 He's been laying here on a mat for who knows how long with all these other sickly people. 00:16:15.779 --> 00:16:17.139 Of course he wants to get well. 00:16:17.200 --> 00:16:18.399 Why would Jesus ask this? 00:16:18.399 --> 00:16:20.959 How could he not know the answer? 00:16:22.559 --> 00:16:26.919 Well, I think what Jesus is doing here is not so much trying to figure out whether or not this guy wants to be well. 00:16:27.000 --> 00:16:28.699 But I think he's trying with getting well. 00:16:52.360 --> 00:16:55.459 Of course I want to get well, but I can't because no one cares to help me. 00:16:56.439 --> 00:16:58.139 What do you think I'm doing here, man? 00:24:19.839 --> 00:24:25.399 But see, over time, these Jewish leaders had built a whole system of extra rules to be followed 00:24:25.399 --> 00:24:31.819 because just like the invalid man, in their minds they had their own idea 00:24:31.819 --> 00:24:35.639 of what would bring shalom and salvation to their nation. 00:24:36.059 --> 00:24:41.859 While the invalid thought he needed the stirred up magical pool of water to be saved, 00:24:42.599 --> 00:24:47.599 the Jewish leaders here thought they needed strict moralistic practices in order to be saved. 00:24:47.599 --> 00:24:52.240 And this is why they were so legalistic and so quick to police people's behavior. 00:24:52.379 --> 00:24:53.839 It wasn't just about broken rules to them. 00:24:53.899 --> 00:24:58.679 For them, each violation of their rules was a threat to their nation's righteousness 00:24:58.679 --> 00:25:01.799 and worthiness to receive a Messiah. 00:25:02.959 --> 00:25:04.179 So do you see a similarity? 00:25:05.240 --> 00:25:09.459 Here in the city of Jerusalem, whether at the pool of Bethesda by the sheep gate 00:25:09.460 --> 00:25:14.279 or even the halls of the temple itself, the invalid man had his way of
