00:04:31.479 --> 00:04:35.500 The Apostle Paul wrote this epistle to the church in Rome. 00:04:35.699 --> 00:04:39.719 And this is really the crowning epistle of the New Testament. 00:04:40.479 --> 00:04:45.539 It's ordered in our Bibles after the four Gospels, after the Acts of the Apostles as the first 00:04:45.540 --> 00:04:49.660 in the head of all the letters of the Apostles because it's the most important. 00:04:49.800 --> 00:04:50.939 It's the crowning epistle. 00:04:51.879 --> 00:04:59.140 And one of the brightest and most radiant gems in this crown is Romans chapter 8. 00:05:00.060 --> 00:05:05.520 I've said before, you know, Romans 5 is the most important chapter in this letter, but Romans 00:05:05.520 --> 00:05:09.320 8 is far and away the most moving chapter. 00:05:09.319 --> 00:05:16.959 And this is probably the best known and best loved, one of the best known and best loved 00:05:16.959 --> 00:05:18.259 chapters in all the Bible. 00:05:18.519 --> 00:05:23.920 And if you're looking to learn some scripture by heart, I would definitely start here. 00:05:25.600 --> 00:05:35.379 But the overarching theme of Romans 8 is that our salvation in Jesus Christ is absolutely secure 00:05:35.379 --> 00:05:38.199 and unshakable and uncertain. 00:05:39.279 --> 00:05:43.659 That's what Paul wants to drive home for us, that anyone who has been justified by faith 00:05:43.659 --> 00:05:50.759 can be confident in their full deliverance, in their complete liberation, in their final 00:05:50.759 --> 00:05:51.579 salvation. 00:05:51.759 --> 00:05:58.120 And Romans 8 really was written to strengthen people like us, Christians and men and women 00:05:58.120 --> 00:06:05.079 like us, people who are gathered like us today to strengthen us in our assurance of the gospel 00:06:05.079 --> 00:06:07.579 and in our relationship with God. 00:06:08.220 --> 00:06:14.220 And that's why he begins in Romans 8.1, there's no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 00:06:14.360 --> 00:06:18.660 And he ends with there's no separation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 00:06:18.840 --> 00:06:24.959 Absolutely nothing whatsoever can separate you from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus 00:06:24.959 --> 00:06:25.939 our Lord. 00:06:25.939 --> 00:06:30.899 Now this is a letter that's written by a Christian and to Christians. 00:06:31.160 --> 00:06:34.920 It's written to instruct this church in Rome which is at the heart of the empire. 00:06:35.139 --> 00:06:42.579 But I also recognize we have people here every week who are exploring Christianity and investigating 00:06:42.579 --> 00:06:44.879 the claims of Jesus and his apostles. 00:06:45.060 --> 00:06:50.319 And so if that's you, we're delighted that you're here and delighted to journey with you 00:06:50.319 --> 00:06:55.839 as you discover who Jesus is and what he did and why that matters. 00:06:55.939 --> 00:06:59.600 And I just want to say to you, Romans is actually a great place to begin. 00:07:01.300 --> 00:07:05.740 And so what is Paul saying in this text we just read? 00:07:05.779 --> 00:07:07.079 What's he saying here in Romans 8? 00:07:07.839 --> 00:07:17.180 He's saying this, that in Jesus Christ you can have a new freedom and a new power and a new life. 00:07:17.180 --> 00:07:29.840 And I want to start with that first statement, that in Jesus Christ you can have a new freedom. 00:07:31.280 --> 00:07:32.360 Paul begins, he says, 00:07:32.360 --> 00:07:46.180 Now you've been made free. 00:07:46.280 --> 00:07:47.900 You've been set at liberty. 00:07:47.899 --> 00:07:54.739 So when we gather together at various sporting events and we sing the Star Spangled Banner, 00:07:55.519 --> 00:07:58.279 we come to that climactic phrase. 00:07:58.379 --> 00:07:59.579 I'm not going to sing it for you. 00:07:59.719 --> 00:08:06.079 But there's sort of that elongated high note where we talk about, we sing about the land of the free. 00:08:06.299 --> 00:08:08.719 And sometimes we go, free, you know, like that. 00:08:08.720 --> 00:08:12.740 And everybody starts cheering and yeah, woo! 00:08:13.620 --> 00:08:19.560 Our culture not only sings it that way, but our culture highlights freedom as the main theme 00:08:19.560 --> 00:08:21.860 and the main value of our society. 00:08:22.020 --> 00:08:25.740 We measure progress according to increasing freedoms. 00:08:25.900 --> 00:08:27.800 Freedom is the highest good. 00:08:28.900 --> 00:08:33.800 Becoming free is the most heroic story we can think to tell ourselves, right? 00:08:33.799 --> 00:08:40.679 Giving people freedom, we think that's kind of the main role of all of our institutions. 00:08:41.959 --> 00:08:45.219 And one of the challenges is that in much of our society, 00:08:45.759 --> 00:08:49.159 Christianity is increasingly seen as the arch enemy of freedom. 00:08:50.559 --> 00:08:51.620 You guys realize that? 00:08:52.559 --> 00:08:59.620 So what's interesting to me is that the Apostle Paul says that if your identity is in Jesus Christ, 00:08:59.620 --> 00:09:03.940 if you've been united to him in his life, death, and resurrection, 00:09:04.799 --> 00:09:08.139 you can experience a radical freedom. 00:09:10.419 --> 00:09:12.120 You've been made free, he says. 00:09:12.159 --> 00:09:13.220 You've been set at liberty. 00:09:13.340 --> 00:09:16.000 And the question is, well, freedom from what? 00:09:16.379 --> 00:09:17.220 Freedom from what? 00:09:18.019 --> 00:09:23.360 Again, he says, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 00:09:23.360 --> 00:09:28.919 And really, Paul's been talking about that since Romans 1, verse 18, 00:09:29.100 --> 00:09:32.019 where he says the wrath of God, the condemnation of God, 00:09:32.220 --> 00:09:37.720 is being revealed from heaven against all of our ungodliness and our unrighteousness. 00:09:38.240 --> 00:09:41.720 The people like us who suppress the truth about God. 00:09:42.860 --> 00:09:44.960 The condemnation of God is upon us. 00:09:45.940 --> 00:09:48.779 And he goes to chapter 1, chapter 2, chapter 3, 00:09:48.779 --> 00:09:51.959 and he says all of us are under the power of sin and death, 00:09:52.039 --> 00:09:54.699 the law of sin and death. 00:09:55.339 --> 00:10:05.159 And that all of us have within us this dark, cancerous, malignant, metastasizing mass 00:10:05.159 --> 00:10:08.519 that's our fallen human nature, 00:10:08.899 --> 00:10:13.699 what Paul here calls the flesh that we inherited in Adam. 00:10:13.700 --> 00:10:21.700 And because of that, we're all Republican, Democrat, Jew, Gentile, Eastern, Western. 00:10:21.780 --> 00:10:25.340 We're all under the judgment and condemnation of God. 00:10:26.680 --> 00:10:29.500 And Paul has already said this back in Romans 5. 00:10:29.560 --> 00:10:30.420 I'll just repeat it. 00:10:30.460 --> 00:10:31.660 He says in Romans 5, 16, 00:10:31.740 --> 00:10:34.879 The judgment followed one sin of Adam and brought what? 00:10:35.640 --> 00:10:36.120 Condemnation. 00:10:37.160 --> 00:10:40.280 But the gift of God's grace in Christ followed many trespasses 00:10:40.280 --> 00:10:41.060 and brought what? 00:10:41.700 --> 00:10:42.180 Justification. 00:10:42.179 --> 00:10:43.839 He goes on. 00:10:43.919 --> 00:10:44.120 He says, 00:10:44.379 --> 00:10:48.779 Just as one trespass of Adam resulted in condemnation for all people, 00:10:48.899 --> 00:10:56.539 so also one righteous act of Christ resulted in justification and life for all people. 00:10:57.739 --> 00:10:59.579 Paul's contrasting. 00:10:59.659 --> 00:11:05.859 He's juxtaposing condemnation in Adam and justification in Christ. 00:11:05.860 --> 00:11:12.560 And his point is that all of us who are in Adam are spiritually and morally not free. 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:15.279 We're not free. 00:11:16.220 --> 00:11:17.899 We're slaves of sin. 00:11:18.220 --> 00:11:20.399 We're in bondage to death. 00:11:21.340 --> 00:11:22.300 We are owned. 00:11:22.519 --> 00:11:23.560 We're dominated. 00:11:23.740 --> 00:11:28.960 We're tyrannized by this condemnation that we brought upon ourselves. 00:11:28.960 --> 00:11:31.340 But here's the thing. 00:11:31.639 --> 00:11:32.840 Here's the gospel. 00:11:33.000 --> 00:11:33.900 Here's the good news. 00:11:34.740 --> 00:11:38.280 Is that God himself has done something about that. 00:11:39.120 --> 00:11:42.920 God himself has come in the person of Jesus Christ, it says here, 00:11:42.919 --> 00:11:46.879 to make us free and to set us at liberty. 00:11:47.759 --> 00:11:52.399 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 00:11:52.399 --> 00:12:01.279 because through Christ Jesus, the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death. 00:12:01.279 --> 00:12:05.000 I want you to look at that little word, N-O. 00:12:05.419 --> 00:12:05.759 No. 00:12:06.679 --> 00:12:08.959 It's 00:12:46.579 --> 00:12:51.000 Now, I did not begin my Christian life knowing that. 00:12:51.579 --> 00:12:55.600 When I was, you know, elementary school, middle school, high school, 00:12:55.600 --> 00:12:59.620 I didn't know the truth of Romans 8, 1. 00:12:59.620 --> 00:13:06.139 And that was a problem for me because I would be afraid that when I would sin, 00:13:07.100 --> 00:13:09.759 when I would fail to love God with all my heart, 00:13:09.820 --> 00:13:14.539 when I would fail to love, you know, my family and my neighbors as myself, 00:13:14.580 --> 00:13:16.080 which was happening all the time, 00:13:16.360 --> 00:13:21.320 when that was happening, I was afraid that I would come back again under condemnation. 00:13:21.320 --> 00:13:27.440 And I felt like I was constantly passing from one state to the other, back and forth, 00:13:27.580 --> 00:13:30.720 condemned, not condemned, condemned, not condemned. 00:13:30.920 --> 00:13:35.440 And I felt like, man, I need to become a Christian all over again, 00:13:35.960 --> 00:13:37.480 just like I became a Christian yesterday. 00:13:37.540 --> 00:13:41.460 I need to become a Christian again today so that I cannot be under condemnation. 00:13:41.460 --> 00:13:46.600 And the problem was, if any of you experienced that, I did not understand my position. 00:13:47.420 --> 00:13:52.100 I didn't understand my status and my standing in Jesus Christ. 00:13:52.340 --> 00:13:55.940 That little word, N-O, means never. 00:13:57.820 --> 00:14:03.100 It doesn't say for this moment and temporarily and for the time being, to start a whole new race of human beings. 00:16:59.539 --> 00:17:03.899 And why did God the Father send his perfect and undefiled and sinless son? 00:17:04.339 --> 00:17:06.259 He says, to be a sin offering. 00:17:07.240 --> 00:17:09.799 To take our sins upon himself. 00:17:10.839 --> 00:17:15.299 The cross of Jesus Christ, the death of Jesus Christ, 00:17:15.799 --> 00:17:18.359 that is the definitive time and place 00:17:18.359 --> 00:17:23.099 when and where God condemned our sins. 00:17:23.099 --> 00:17:28.039 The judgment of God, the wrath of God, 00:17:28.159 --> 00:17:31.019 the condemnation of God for our sins was poured out, 00:17:31.099 --> 00:17:35.219 not upon us, but upon Christ crucified in our place 00:17:35.219 --> 00:17:37.259 and as our substitute. 00:17:37.519 --> 00:18:42.920 --> 00:18:46.019 Now, if you're a Christian, 00:18:46.800 --> 00:18:52.440 I want to say to you that we must never allow the dark powers 00:18:52.440 --> 00:18:55.039 that are arrayed against us, 00:18:55.060 --> 00:18:58.279 we must never allow those dark powers to condemn us 00:18:58.279 --> 00:19:02.140 because our condemnation has already happened in the past, 00:19:02.200 --> 00:19:03.220 it's already been dealt with. 00:19:03.279 --> 00:19:07.220 So when you're feeling tempted by this voice 00:19:07.220 --> 00:19:10.620 that often can come and condemn you, 00:19:10.619 --> 00:19:14.119 you need to quote Romans 8, 1 back and just say, 00:19:14.219 --> 00:19:16.059 Well, hey, you know, there's no condemnation 00:19:16.059 --> 00:19:17.399 for those who are in Christ Jesus, 00:19:17.519 --> 00:19:18.559 and that includes me. 00:19:20.039 --> 00:19:21.299 And what's more than that, 00:19:21.359 --> 00:19:22.079 if you're a Christian, 00:19:23.259 --> 00:19:25.699
