and 00:02:53.879 --> 00:03:00.379 it was this novel about the nature of genius, the cost of ambition, and the battle to electrify 00:03:00.379 --> 00:03:00.860 America. 00:03:00.860 --> 00:03:08.080 New York City in 1888 was full of gas lamps that still flickered in the streets at night, 00:03:08.620 --> 00:03:12.580 and the miracle of electric light was still in his infancy. 00:03:12.720 --> 00:03:17.600 So these three inventors, they were in a race to turn the night into day. 00:03:17.660 --> 00:03:25.080 And what I learned in that novel, that story about Edison, was that he acquired quantum physics and the theory of relativity. 00:04:03.540 --> 00:04:11.400 Less known is Marie Curie, who was the first woman to receive the Nobel Prize, and she was 00:04:11.400 --> 00:04:14.260 the first person to win it in two separate categories. 00:04:14.420 --> 00:04:20.780 She won it in 1903 in physics for her research on radioactivity, and then she won the Nobel Prize 00:04:20.779 --> 00:04:49.439 --> 00:04:54.600 Rosa Parks, by refusing to give up her seat on a bus, launched one of the most successful 00:04:54.600 --> 00:04:58.519 and effective nonviolent protests against discrimination in America. 00:04:58.620 --> 00:05:03.939 The staunch and active Christian woman became a figurehead of the civil rights movement and 00:05:03.939 --> 00:05:07.360 helped to achieve lasting change for the good of our whole society. 00:05:07.540 --> 00:05:14.139 So, one person can have a significant impact on the world around them. 00:05:14.139 --> 00:05:17.579 And that can be chapter and the most important letter in the 00:05:49.660 --> 00:05:50.140 New Testament. 00:05:51.040 --> 00:05:55.740 And so, we should remind all the people who went on vacation today that they really missed 00:05:55.740 --> 00:05:56.060 out. 00:05:58.020 --> 00:06:03.240 Verses 12 to 21 are really the heart and the center and the turning point of this whole letter. 00:06:03.240 --> 00:06:05.120 It sums up all that's gone before it. 00:06:05.639 --> 00:06:09.500 It encapsulates all that Paul's going to say to the end of Romans 8. 00:06:09.560 --> 00:06:10.780 It's a crucial section. 00:06:11.600 --> 00:06:17.900 And the scope and the sweep of what we just heard is probably the greatest, the widest, 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:22.420 and maybe even the deepest of all the writings of the Apostle Paul and maybe even the whole 00:06:22.420 --> 00:06:23.160 of the New Testament. 00:06:24.259 --> 00:06:30.960 And this text really invites us to stand back and to take a look at this grand view of the 00:06:30.959 --> 00:06:36.339 whole panorama of redemption that's summed up in these two people. 00:06:37.919 --> 00:06:46.399 And what Paul wants to say is that we were made, we were made to reign in Adam. 00:06:47.519 --> 00:06:52.019 But now grace reigns in Christ and so we reign in life. 00:06:52.279 --> 00:06:54.560 It's a lot, so I'm going to say it multiple times. 00:06:54.560 --> 00:06:56.899 We were made to reign in Adam. 00:06:57.600 --> 00:07:02.180 But now grace reigns in Christ and so we reign in life. 00:07:02.899 --> 00:07:05.160 Let me just unpack each of these thoughts. 00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:08.240 First of all, we were made to reign in Adam. 00:07:09.500 --> 00:07:14.480 If you want to understand Christ and you want to understand your need for Christ, we must 00:07:14.480 --> 00:07:19.740 know something about our relationship with Adam and what it means to be in Adam because 00:07:19.740 --> 00:07:21.920 his story is the story of the human race. 00:07:21.920 --> 00:07:26.900 God has always, from the beginning, dealt with human beings through a head, through a 00:07:26.900 --> 00:07:31.439 representative, and through a covenant and an agreement with that representative. 00:07:31.640 --> 00:07:36.420 So what was the covenant agreement with our first head, the first representative of humanity? 00:07:37.360 --> 00:07:44.200 On page one of the Bible, we learn that at the climax of God's good creation, God says 00:07:44.199 --> 00:07:50.699 in Genesis 1.26, he says, let us make human beings in our image so that they may rule, 00:07:51.479 --> 00:07:52.740 so that they may reign. 00:07:53.920 --> 00:07:56.319 And so God does that very thing. 00:07:56.399 --> 00:08:00.779 He makes Adam and Eve in his royal image as the king and the queen of creation. 00:08:01.480 --> 00:08:07.240 So that every son of Adam and every daughter of Eve you'll ever meet is to share in this 00:08:07.240 --> 00:08:12.460 nature and this task that Adam and Eve had, that the people sitting in the pew next to 00:08:12.460 --> 00:08:16.720 you this morning, they're actually royalty, right? 00:08:16.840 --> 00:08:22.019 They, that the people sitting next to you were made to rule and to reign, right? 00:08:22.079 --> 00:08:27.960 We should really address one another as your majesty or your royal highness. 00:08:28.019 --> 00:08:29.439 You can try that at coffee time. 00:08:29.519 --> 00:08:31.819 I give you permission afterwards to try that out. 00:08:31.819 --> 00:08:38.500 But God goes on and he says in two verses later in Genesis 1.28, he says to his royal 00:08:38.500 --> 00:08:44.000 image, the king and queen of creation, he says, be fruitful, increase in number, fill 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:48.000 the earth, subdue it, and rule over it, reign over it. 00:08:48.179 --> 00:08:50.299 That's what you were made to do. 00:08:51.759 --> 00:08:55.059 Theologians call this the creation mandate or the cultural mandate. 00:08:55.259 --> 00:08:56.340 What in the world does it mean? 00:08:56.340 --> 00:08:59.740 Well, it tells us something about societal life, right? 00:08:59.740 --> 00:09:07.379 That this first couple was to bear the fruit of kids and they were to increase the number 00:09:07.379 --> 00:09:14.279 of the image of God in the world and they were to cultivate an entire society of people 00:09:14.279 --> 00:09:17.500 that would reflect the glory of God back to God. 00:09:19.120 --> 00:09:25.220 And this text tells us something also about not only societal life but of cultural life. 00:09:25.220 --> 00:09:30.960 God placed the first man and the first woman in this, what we should think of as like a 00:09:30.960 --> 00:09:33.100 national park called the Garden of Eden. 00:09:33.899 --> 00:09:37.200 And he gave them this task to till it and to keep it. 00:09:37.740 --> 00:09:44.540 So that just as God had been forming and filling his creation, now Adam and Eve are to fill and 00:09:44.540 --> 00:09:46.899 to form his creation even more. 00:09:46.899 --> 00:09:54.539 To develop and to unfold in society and in culture all of the hidden potential that God has woven in 00:09:54.539 --> 00:09:57.340 and baked into his creation for the glory of God. 00:09:58.019 --> 00:09:58.639 Does that make sense? 00:09:59.459 --> 00:10:02.259 Adam and Eve were made to rule and to reign. 00:10:02.399 --> 00:10:06.559 And they were to do that according to the laws of nature and also according to the norms 00:10:06.559 --> 00:10:09.860 that God had built into society and into culture. 00:10:09.860 --> 00:10:16.139 The wisdom of God, the plan and the order of God had been woven into all the given structures 00:10:16.139 --> 00:10:21.019 and standards of all these various 00:10:36.980 --> 00:10:41.180 God says to Adam and Eve, I want you to work with me. 00:10:41.980 --> 00:10:44.259 Work with me as my royal stewards. 00:10:44.379 --> 00:10:45.840 As my under-sovereigns. 00:10:46.500 --> 00:10:49.759 To execute my plan for my masterpiece. 00:10:51.080 --> 00:10:58.120 And bring all of these spheres, all of these institutions to conform to what I intend. 00:10:58.259 --> 00:11:01.360 My creational blueprint and my design. 00:11:01.360 --> 00:11:09.379 And so this ruling and this reigning from the very beginning was never about tyrannical exploitation of the earth. 00:11:09.480 --> 00:11:17.220 It was always about this careful stewardship to spread the goodness of God and to glorify the name of God 00:11:17.220 --> 00:11:22.399 within this ordered creation in which God had placed Adam and Eve. 00:11:23.800 --> 00:11:27.220 And this is why Psalm 8, when you read the psalm, Psalm 8 says, 00:11:27.220 --> 00:11:29.360 Wow, praise God. 00:11:29.960 --> 00:11:35.840 God, you made men and women to rule and to reign over the works of your hands. 00:11:36.139 --> 00:11:36.460 Whoa. 00:11:37.960 --> 00:11:41.680 And you see, Adam and Eve were made to reign over God's creation. 00:11:42.200 --> 00:11:45.360 But instead of reigning over it, they ruined it. 00:11:46.200 --> 00:11:48.560 Instead of reigning over it, they ruined it. 00:11:49.399 --> 00:11:51.860 They were made for this personal relationship with God. 00:11:51.860 --> 00:11:57.360 They were made upright with this original righteousness to live in obedience to God. could try to chart their own path and find their own way apart from God's word 00:12:18.500 --> 00:12:20.720 and therefore experience death. 00:12:20.720 --> 00:12:27.940 And so here they are fearfully and fully and wonderfully made to live out their freedom 00:12:27.940 --> 00:12:30.200 under God's reign and his rule. 00:12:31.180 --> 00:12:33.120 But this dark power comes in. 00:12:33.200 --> 00:12:34.440 This dark enemy comes. 00:12:34.639 --> 00:12:39.540 And he subtly begins to doubt, to cause them to doubt God's word. 00:12:40.560 --> 00:12:44.639 He begins to question and cause them to question the goodness of God. 00:12:44.639 --> 00:12:52.779 And tempts them to assert their own autonomy, to become a law unto themselves rather than relying 00:12:52.779 --> 00:12:54.559 on God's word for direction. 00:12:55.799 --> 00:12:57.500 And we know the fatal choice. 00:12:58.439 --> 00:12:58.580 Right? 00:12:58.620 --> 00:13:01.659 They chose to be self-defined rather than God-defined. 00:13:02.399 --> 00:13:05.699 They chose to be self-centered rather than God-centered. 00:13:05.700 --> 00:13:09.920 Thinking that in that they were going to find the path to true life, to true freedom. 00:13:10.960 --> 00:13:17.980 So that what the apostle says of all people can certainly be said of Adam and Eve. 00:13:18.100 --> 00:13:23.340 That although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him. 00:13:23.960 --> 00:13:27.060 But their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 00:13:27.120 --> 00:13:30.000 They exchanged the truth about God for a lie. 00:13:30.000 --> 00:13:34.320 And they worshipped and served, created things rather than the creator. 00:13:35.840 --> 00:13:36.960 And so what was the result? --> 00:13:47.779 That's where our text picks up today in verse 12. 00:13:47.899 --> 00:13:52.259 It says that therefore, just as sin entered the world through one man and death through sin. 00:13:52.340 --> 00:13:55.919 And in this way, death came to all people because all sin. 00:13:55.919 --> 00:14:02.579 And this is the catastrophe that Adam and Eve were made to reign, but they fell world was filled with misery and trouble and wretchedness. 00:14:15.139 --> 00:14:21.199 Adam and Eve, rather than subduing, they became subdued by unhappiness and sorrow. 00:14:21.200 --> 00:14:31.680 And so our text tells us in verse 14, it says that death reigned from the time of Adam onwards. 00:14:32.960 --> 00:14:38.700 And in verse 17, it says, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man. 00:14:39.680 --> 00:14:44.840 And then in verse 21, it says that sin reigned in death. 00:14:44.840 --> 00:14:51.840 We were made to reign in righteousness and life, and yet sin and death began a reign of terror over every single one of us. 00:14:53.000 --> 00:15:01.440 Adam and Eve opened this door of sin and death, and it therefore invaded us like a foreign invader came into God's good creation. 00:15:01.700 --> 00:15:13.220 And Paul here personifies sin and death as this active, reigning, ruling, governing power that exercises total domination. 00:15:13.220 --> 00:15:23.840 A tyranny, an oppressive totalitarianism that makes us not rulers and people who reign, but rather makes us slaves. 00:15:25.500 --> 00:15:29.740 That no matter how free the status of everyone you'll ever meet who's a descendant of the race of Adam. 00:17:14.559 --> 00:17:29.279 And so if you're exploring Christianity today, I want to encourage you to consider whether or not this reign of death, which is universal and without exception, is that a part of the natural order of life on planet Earth? 00:17:30.460 --> 00:17:40.039 Or is this an unnatural, unwanted intrusion into the way that God wanted human life to be lived at a very, very high level? 00:17:40.039 --> 00:17:45.980 With human beings reigning as kings and queens just under the reign of God? 00:17:47.500 --> 00:17:52.319 Paul says that in Adam, we were made to reign in Adam. 00:17:52.940 --> 00:17:54.279 You following me so far? 00:17:55.200 --> 00:17:57.200 This is like one of the hardest texts in the New Testament. 00:17:57.339 --> 00:17:59.500 So I'm working hard up here for you this morning. 00:17:59.859 --> 00:18:04.059 We're made to reign in Adam, but now grace reigns in Christ. 00:18:04.899 --> 00:18:06.899 But now grace reigns in Christ. 00:18:06.900 --> 00:18:10.460 Paul says in verse 14 that Adam is a pattern of the one to come. 00:18:10.540 --> 00:18:13.300 He's a figure or a type of the one to come. 00:18:13.420 --> 00:18:16.960 Adam, he says, is only one half of the story of humanity. 00:18:17.280 --> 00:18:23.300 But there's also this other story of this 00:18:46.140 And Adam, Paul says in 1 Corinthians 15, he says, Christ is the last Adam. 00:18:47.060 --> 00:18:48.440 He's the second man. 00:18:49.560 --> 00:18:49.660 Right? 00:18:49.740 --> the work of the other man. 00:19:14.759 --> 00:19:19.140 And what Paul is saying is that Christ came to be the head of a new humanity. 00:19:19.140 --> 00:19:25.940 He came to be the head and the beginning of a new race of men and women. 00:19:25.940 --> 00:19:33.980 So that in Romans 8, Paul says that Christ is the firstborn of many brothers and sisters. 00:19:34.080 --> 00:19:38.100 The firstborn of many who will be born after him and in his line. 00:19:39.559 --> 00:19:42.720 Christ came, Paul says, to launch a new age. 00:19:42.900 --> 00:19:44.180 A new kingdom. 00:19:44.340 --> verse 21, just as sin reigned in death, so also grace might reign through righteousness to bring eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. 00:20:01.519 --> 00:20:07.519 As we are all related to Adam came to all by the action of one man, Adam, has now been overtaken by this new age, this new realm of the reign of grace through the action of the one man, Christ, he says. 00:20:28.319 --> 00:20:35.079 And so the apostle's main concern here is to unfold for us this amazing reign of grace. 00:20:35.079 --> 00:20:41.079 And in doing so, he's giving us a paradigm and a framework for human history. 00:20:42.139 --> 00:20:52.919 He says, the history of the world and really the history of redemption is a struggle between the reign of sin and the reign of grace. 00:20:53.759 --> 00:20:56.899 And it leads ultimately to the triumph and the victory of grace. 00:20:56.980 --> 00:21:01.960 And grace, you'll remember from the past few weeks, grace is God's favor to the undeserving. Saul of Tarsus, an adversary of Christ, a persecutor of Christ's church. 00:26:30.759 --> 00:26:38.000 And it can turn him into the greatest apostle, the greatest preacher of Christian truth and 00:28:27.360 For if by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God's abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ? 00:28:27.359 --> 00:28:34.259 This is an astonishing antithesis and really a thrilling contrast if it's actually true. 00:28:36.000 --> 00:28:37.799 We were dominated by death. 00:28:38.959 --> 00:28:42.939 But Paul says now we're identified with the risen and the living Christ. 00:28:44.159 --> 00:28:46.819 Because of one man's trespass, death reigned. We've got to think about the much more. 00:29:06.160 --> 00:29:12.080 However, the contrast of death reigning is not merely life reigning, Paul says. 00:29:12.140 --> 00:29:20.640 It's the fact that you now, brothers and sisters, are reigning in life by the one Jesus Christ. 00:29:20.640 --> 00:29:29.100 He's not only saying that as a result of Christ's work and because death no longer reigns over us, we receive the gift of eternal life. 00:29:29.180 --> 00:29:33.520 And therefore, life is going to reign over us and we've come under this new order of life. 00:29:33.600 --> 00:29:35.380 All says, 00:31:47.219 --> 00:31:51.719 All power and all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 00:31:53.139 --> 00:31:56.399 And when Peter preached the first Christian sermon at Pentecost, he says, 00:31:56.400 --> 00:32:02.940 God raised Christ from the dead because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him. 00:32:04.540 --> 00:32:11.340 And so, brothers and sisters, we've been united to one who's so much more than a mere human being. 00:32:11.420 --> 00:32:15.560 And we've been united to someone who's so much stronger than death. 00:32:16.620 --> reigning in life, 00:33:16.779 --> 00:33:22.339 but you are going to receive an inheritance that's far beyond any inheritance you can receive in this world. 00:33:22.419 --> 00:33:25.559 You're going Revelation 1, says, 00:33:34.059 --> 00:33:43.720 He who loves us and has freed us from our sins by his blood has made us to be a kingdom and priest to serve his God and Father. 00:33:45.159 --> 00:33:48.960 And it goes on to call Jesus Christ the king of kings. 00:33:48.960 --> 00:33:53.900 Well, who are the kings of which Christ is the king? 00:33:55.920 --> 00:33:56.680 You are. 00:33:58.360 --> 00:34:01.600 The people of God are the kings. 00:34:01.700 --> 00:34:05.200 He's made us to be a kingdom to serve his God and Father. 00:34:05.299 --> 00:34:08.500 And that means that we are going to reign with the king of kings. 00:34:08.599 --> 00:34:15.720 We're going to share the throne of the Son of God who shares the throne of thrones of his heavenly Father. 00:34:15.719 --> 00:34:26.199 And so even now, because of this reign of grace, we're reigning in life through this one man, Jesus Christ. 00:34:27.679 --> 00:34:32.819 Adam's world, this sad old world, is a world full of the power of evil and sin and death. 00:34:32.899 --> 00:34:40.019 But this new world of Christ is a world that's full of the power of grace and righteousness and life. 00:34:40.019 -->
