master's picture 00:00:22.460 --> 00:00:31.899 that he has set forth and that we might know and to understand what God is doing and how 00:00:31.899 --> 00:00:36.899 God is working in this situation enough room for all my pictures. 00:01:06.939 --> 00:01:12.020 You know, they take a picture and record everything that is around them. 00:01:12.020 --> 00:01:17.219 And, but most of us do have pictures around and pictures we know we enjoy in our generation, 00:01:17.219 --> 00:01:22.760 something very special and unique because we have pictures all over, you know, that 00:01:22.760 --> 00:01:28.239 you can look at and they bring back memories from specific milestones in life, you know, 00:01:28.260 --> 00:01:33.539 events like, you know, when a little one is born, you know, you get grandmas go snap 00:01:33.539 --> 00:01:39.299 happy and they get all sorts of pictures going, you know, and, and you find that things like 00:01:39.299 --> 00:01:47.140 graduations, you know, or weddings or other meaningful events or maybe a special vacation or a 00:01:47.140 --> 00:01:51.879 location of something that we take a picture and we keep those pictures. 00:01:52.840 --> 00:01:53.280 Why? 00:01:53.420 --> 00:02:01.939 Because when we look at that picture, it brings back to mind those things associated with it, 00:02:02.560 --> 00:02:07.819 you know, it brings back to mind, you know, the, the enjoyment that it might've brought or the, 00:02:07.939 --> 00:02:13.920 or the joy that came with it or the milestone of that event in life, you know, as you look back 00:02:13.919 --> 00:02:20.839 and you remember those things and a picture is that because a picture itself is not the event, 00:02:20.839 --> 00:02:29.079 but a picture does help us to recall, I believe, the value surrounding the event, you know, 00:02:29.219 --> 00:02:30.959 because the picture is just that. 00:02:31.039 --> 00:02:34.759 It's just a, something that is a flashpoint in time. 00:02:34.759 --> 00:02:39.179 But what it means to us makes a difference. 00:02:40.679 --> 00:02:44.799 You know, as we're looking here at the last Passover, I want you to understand this meal 00:02:44.799 --> 00:02:53.039 that Jesus is celebrating with his disciples represents a moment in time that transformed 00:02:53.039 --> 00:02:54.259 the children of Israel. 00:02:55.079 --> 00:02:58.840 This is a transformational moment that this marks. 00:02:58.840 --> 00:03:07.000 When we look at the last supper that Jesus has with his disciples here, at that moment 00:03:07.000 --> 00:03:14.360 in time, because it brought back to them that night in Egypt where they had slain the land 00:03:14.360 --> 00:03:19.759 and the, and the head of the household had went out and put the blood as he dipped it in 00:03:19.759 --> 00:03:22.939 the bowl with the hyssop and, and put it upon the doorpost. 00:03:22.939 --> 00:03:29.439 And we know that the death angel, the destroyer passed over all those that had the blood applied. 00:03:30.439 --> 00:03:33.359 And we see that picture for them. 00:03:33.419 --> 00:03:37.219 It was something they were supposed to do for a memorial forever. 00:03:37.719 --> 00:03:39.560 You know, to remember, what does it do? 00:03:39.680 --> 00:03:47.259 That event created a picture in their mind that they might remember what took place. 00:03:47.259 --> 00:03:54.840 And here is the disciples and Jesus here, they're looking back at a moment in time, but Jesus 00:03:54.840 --> 00:04:01.979 is going to take it and move it to a moment in the future for him, which will become a moment 00:04:01.979 --> 00:04:05.819 in time for us. 00:04:07.000 --> 00:04:09.919 And we're going to see this picture played out. 00:04:09.979 --> 00:04:14.599 children of Israel, 00:07:04.980 --> 00:07:10.600 clear back in the Old Testament, we'll find that the reason the Passover was given to the 00:07:10.600 --> 00:07:14.540 children of Israel is so that it would not pass by their memory. 00:07:15.180 --> 00:07:20.420 That it wouldn't just go on of something that, yeah, we heard about, but something that would 00:07:20.420 --> 00:07:24.960 be brought up every year to the forefront of their mind. 00:07:25.240 --> 00:07:30.500 To consider those things, but to stop and to consider what took place. 00:07:30.600 --> 00:07:33.100 You know, look back in Exodus chapter 12 for a moment. 00:07:33.100 --> 00:07:39.900 Exodus chapter 12, we find here when the Passover was instituted, here in the book of Exodus, 00:07:39.900 --> 00:07:47.700 you'll find as the children of Israel are facing the dynamics happening with God judging Egypt 00:07:47.700 --> 00:07:49.700 and judging the gods of Egypt. 00:07:50.080 --> 00:07:57.480 And we're going to see here as God prepares that last judgment upon them. 00:07:57.480 --> 00:08:01.160 And we see this, and it says in verse 14 of Exodus chapter 12, it says, 00:08:01.280 --> 00:08:07.819 And this day shall be unto you for a memorial, and ye shall keep it a feast to the Lord throughout 00:08:07.819 --> 00:08:08.840 your generations. 00:08:09.340 --> 00:08:13.500 And ye shall keep it a feast by ordinance forever. 00:08:14.180 --> 00:08:21.280 In other words, God said, I want you to mark this day, this 14th day of the first month 00:08:21.279 --> 00:08:30.599 of your new calendar to say, this is the day that you're to stop and to remember what took 00:08:30.599 --> 00:08:31.119 place. 00:08:32.579 --> 00:08:39.959 To remember what happened in Egypt, because the memorial that was given to Israel thousands 00:08:39.959 --> 00:08:45.559 of years ago is now going to be transformed by the one that instituted it. 00:08:46.059 --> 00:08:51.100 The very thing they were remembering pointed to the one that sat at the table with them. 00:08:52.019 --> 00:08:58.259 Everything about the Passover, the blood that was applied, the perfect lamb that was to 00:08:58.259 --> 00:09:05.279 be slain, everything from the pictures we're going to see here today of the bread that was 00:09:05.279 --> 00:09:08.699 broken, and the cup that represents his blood. 00:09:08.819 --> 00:09:15.439 And we're going to see how Jesus presents this to them in a way that impacts even us today. 00:09:16.759 --> 00:09:21.100 Because I want you to understand, the Passover was not to be a ritual. 00:09:21.279 --> day memorial days for most people to become just another day off 00:09:48.540 --> 00:09:57.620 but when it was instituted it wasn't just another day off it had meaning it had purpose behind it 00:09:57.620 --> 00:10:02.300 there was something attached to it and they wanted people to remember 00:10:02.300 --> 00:10:09.580 here jesus has given us something to remember and we're going to look at what are we to remember 00:10:09.580 --> 00:10:16.800 and what's he pointing to and how does it impact us today because what happened right here still 00:10:16.800 --> 00:10:24.879 impacts you and i if we're not separated from it because we're going to see here as we see the body 00:10:24.879 --> 00:10:31.440 uh there this as we note the blood of the lamb was applied in egypt on the doorpost you know 00:10:31.440 --> 00:10:36.900 interesting thing about the passover in egypt is the only place they put the blood on the doorpost 00:10:36.899 --> 00:10:40.779 it's they're never told to do that again but they're told to celebrate the meal i think it's 00:10:40.779 --> 00:10:47.919 a great picture even for us to remind us today because jesus when he shed his blood once was 00:10:47.919 --> 00:10:53.379 sufficient for all and when it's applied to your life it's sufficient for everything 00:10:53.379 --> 00:11:00.699 there's no in between there's no i'm maybe i'm saved or maybe i'm something that they did but each time was to remind them of what happened that the blood that 00:11:16.320 --> 00:11:23.000 allowed the destroyer the death angel to pass over all those that had applied it to the doorpost 00:11:23.000 --> 00:11:29.460 of their house by faith you know the disciples as they sat that evening to a meal it was a meal 00:11:29.460 --> 00:11:36.259 they'd celebrated many times before but they had no idea what was going to take place they had no 00:11:36.259 --> 00:11:43.600 idea what was about to change because the perfect lamb was about to be slain his body broken and his 00:11:43.600 --> 00:11:51.920 blood shed that by trusting in that sacrifice anyone could experience the forgiveness of sin and pass from 00:11:51.919 --> 00:11:58.799 death to life you know they had no idea that the master would give them a new picture to remember 00:11:58.799 --> 00:12:07.179 a new and better sacrifice could be seen one that would provide what we're going to have what jesus calls 00:12:07.179 --> 00:12:13.479 as he's talking to them a new testament or a new covenant we have a better covenant than the old 00:12:13.480 --> 00:12:23.720 covenant we have something far greater we have the completed picture of it because today let's see 00:12:23.720 --> 00:12:31.920 at what a believer today is to recall through what jesus is telling him here at the last supper let's 00:12:31.920 --> 00:12:38.440 look at the examples that he gives us because jesus was leading the meal i want you to see this as jesus 00:12:38.440 --> 00:12:44.580 was leading the meal the passover was led by the head of the household the one that they considered 00:12:44.580 --> 00:12:51.620 in charge of the house the past would lead the passover within that household so we know jesus was the 00:12:51.620 --> 00:12:58.160 one leading through the steps of the passover meal that was taking place because it was very organized 00:12:58.160 --> 00:13:03.740 when they did it it wasn't just sitting down at a random meal and just sort of going through you 00:13:03.740 --> 00:13:08.680 you know it wasn't a potluck you know a little later we're going to have soup and sandwiches you 00:13:08.680 --> 00:13:12.279 know and we're just going to people are going to kind of pick and choose what they want and how they 00:13:12.279 --> 00:13:17.180 want and all those things but i want you to understand the passover was not a meal they got to pick and 00:13:17.180 --> 00:13:25.620 choose they had some things very specific they had very specific items they had very specific order 00:13:25.620 --> 00:13:34.480 in which those items were taken and consumed during the meal all these things were planned out 00:13:34.480 --> 00:13:40.659 and ironed out and we find here that jesus was leading them through the meal and one of the things 00:13:40.659 --> 00:13:49.539 the head of the household would do was explain why they were doing what they were doing you know 00:13:49.539 --> 00:13:54.980 it would part of it was not just for the sake of going through the ritual it was they were training 00:13:54.980 --> 00:14:02.980 another generation to remember they were training them to understand why do we do this why why did 00:14:02.980 --> 00:14:08.560 they do how what they were doing and we find here that he would explain that each portion of the meal 00:14:08.560 --> 00:14:14.700 and what it represented you know that the bitter herbs reminded them of their bondage as slaves in 00:14:14.700 --> 00:14:21.000 egypt you know the fruit of the vine represented god's fellowship with the believer in the midst of 00:14:21.000 --> 00:14:27.139 trial the stewed fruit which was the color and consistency of clay reminded them of the bricks 00:14:27.139 --> 00:14:33.679 they had been forced to make the unleavened bread represented the separation from evil and haste and 00:14:33.679 --> 00:14:42.220 the roasted lamb represented redemption as each part of the meal was eaten the host would take time to 00:14:42.220 --> 00:14:51.220 explain the symbolism and the spiritual importance of each element in other words this meal wasn't one 00:14:51.220 --> 00:15:01.040 they just sat down as a family to enjoy it was a meal with purpose because it reminded them of what god had done 00:15:01.040 --> 00:15:09.980 for them how god had brought them out of egypt how god had redeemed them that night how had the blood being 00:15:09.980 --> 00:15:17.700 applied allowed death to pass over as jesus is there that night expounding to his disciples 00:15:17.700 --> 00:15:22.980 what i'm going to refer to as a fuller and more complete picture 00:15:22.980 --> 00:15:32.300 because jesus now takes it and applies what's happening to himself he says i want you to see where we started there earlier we find here as jesus looks at them and he says as they did eat 00:15:47.979 --> 00:15:56.439 jesus took bread and blasted and break it and gave it to them and said take eat this is my body 00:15:56.440 --> 00:16:04.140 you know the first thing he takes that he separates out for them is the bread that was there jesus equates 00:16:04.140 --> 00:16:11.360 the unleavened bread to himself you know unleavened bread if you're not familiar it's just more like a 00:16:11.360 --> 00:16:17.040 a large saltine cracker you know it's kind of like be the best description we have today you know 00:16:17.040 --> 00:16:23.960 everybody's familiar with what a saltine cracker is you know just a flat piece of bread that doesn't rise 00:16:23.960 --> 00:16:32.800 because it doesn't have yeast it's unleavened and we see that a picture it was a perfect picture 00:16:32.800 --> 00:16:39.940 of his body because it also symbolizes a leaven was removed we talked about that a few weeks ago the 00:16:39.940 --> 00:16:46.940 fact that leaven represents sin in the old testament because a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump a 00:16:46.940 --> 00:16:51.519 little sin in your life affects the whole it's a picture to help us understand 00:16:51.519 --> 00:16:59.340 the impact because it's not just a little thing it's a big thing and we find here that jesus equates 00:16:59.340 --> 00:17:05.720 the unleavened bread to himself it was a picture to illustrate just as when he equated himself 00:17:05.720 --> 00:17:11.839 other places i want you to understand the bread his body is not literally what we partake in 00:17:11.839 --> 00:17:19.599 it's a picture no different than who said i am the door or i am the way or i am i just lost my place 00:17:19.599 --> 00:17:25.119 or when he says i am the vine i want you to understand it's a picture it's a symbolism 00:17:25.119 --> 00:17:33.839 to help us remember and notice this night jesus adds we got their attention because it's like oh so hold on that's not in the 00:18:14.360 --> 00:18:16.220 script that's not what we normally do 00:18:16.220 --> 00:18:23.480 but jesus said this is important because this night he adds he says take eat this is my body 00:18:23.480 --> 00:18:30.079 luke in chapter 22 it records it for us this way as a luke puts it it says and he took bread powerful picture jesus is a presenting to them he says i am the one 00:20:38.599 --> 00:20:48.759 that god's going to place everything upon my body's going to be broken for you i want you to telling them beforehand what's going to take place 00:21:03.000 --> 00:21:09.039 and he says guys i want you to remember because in just a few hours 00:21:09.039 --> 00:21:16.839 from this point less than 24 hours jesus is going to be put in a grave says guys i want to tell you 00:21:16.839 --> 00:21:23.000 beforehand what's going to happen and i want you to remember it i want you to remember 00:21:23.000 --> 00:21:31.059 because he points out that they must receive by faith what he is going to do what's going to be 00:21:31.059 --> 00:21:37.160 done just as we today must accept by faith what he has done for us it's something that happens 00:21:37.160 --> 00:21:43.859 internally not externally in other words taking their participation that night isn't what jesus was 00:21:43.859 -->
