questions and wonderings about the Holy Spirit. 00:00:33.299 --> 00:00:37.700 So we're going to read this morning what Jesus said in John chapter 14. 00:00:38.379 --> 00:00:40.679 This is the evening before Jesus' death. 00:00:41.759 --> 00:00:43.299 Jesus is talking with his disciples. 00:00:43.959 --> 00:00:46.659 They're still in the upper room where they ate the last supper. 00:00:47.399 --> 00:00:49.379 And this is what Jesus said to his disciples. 00:00:50.379 --> 00:00:53.359 If you love me, keep my commands. 00:00:53.359 --> 00:01:01.519 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever. 00:01:02.320 --> 00:01:04.219 The Spirit of Truth. 00:01:05.640 --> 00:01:10.560 The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor about the Holy Spirit 00:01:43.799 --> 00:01:46.939 before we take a closer look at these words of Jesus. 00:01:46.939 --> 00:01:50.359 For some of us here this morning, you might be thinking, 00:01:50.599 --> 00:01:53.659 yes, finally, let's talk about the Holy Spirit. 00:01:54.640 --> 00:01:56.620 We don't hear about him enough. 00:01:57.060 --> 00:01:59.120 And of course, apart from him, we can't do anything. 00:02:00.659 --> 00:02:02.000 Others of you may be thinking, 00:02:02.840 --> 00:02:04.959 hmm, the Holy Spirit. 00:02:05.799 --> 00:02:08.819 I've always wanted to learn more about the Holy Spirit. 00:02:08.819 --> 00:02:14.400 I read about him in my Bible, but this idea of God's Spirit living in me, 00:02:14.479 --> 00:02:17.159 it's so strange, so mysterious. 00:02:17.359 --> 00:02:18.159 How does it work? 00:02:19.879 --> 00:02:25.180 Some of you have believed in the Holy Spirit since the day you first were taught about him, 00:02:25.240 --> 00:02:31.419 and maybe you feel that you just don't feel or sense his presence in you. 00:02:31.419 --> 00:02:34.299 And then others of you might say, 00:02:34.419 --> 00:02:37.139 well, I have no doubt that the Holy Spirit is in me. 00:02:37.859 --> 00:02:42.819 There's a still small voice inside that keeps calling out to me, 00:02:43.479 --> 00:02:45.159 reminding me of the truth, 00:02:46.119 --> 00:02:47.219 convicting me of sin. 00:02:49.079 --> 00:02:50.379 Others of you might say, 00:02:51.119 --> 00:02:52.839 what still small voice? 00:02:53.500 --> 00:02:55.279 I'm not sure if I've ever heard that. 00:02:55.280 --> 00:02:59.159 How do you know that it's the Spirit, 00:02:59.479 --> 00:03:01.240 the Holy Spirit speaking to you, 00:03:01.300 --> 00:03:02.580 and not just your own thoughts? 00:03:04.560 --> 00:03:05.580 Some of you might say, 00:03:05.659 --> 00:03:06.920 well, I just can't explain it, 00:03:06.979 --> 00:03:08.740 but I just have this sense, 00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:09.400 this feeling, 00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:10.319 this prompting. 00:03:10.580 --> 00:03:11.900 It must be him. 00:03:13.020 --> 00:03:13.960 And others might say, 00:03:14.039 --> 00:03:14.979 well, that's interesting. 00:03:16.039 --> 00:03:19.900 What about the times when that prompting or that feeling seems to have been wrong, 00:03:20.240 --> 00:03:21.659 and it wasn't true, 00:03:22.080 --> 00:03:24.379 or it wasn't the right thing to do after all? 00:03:25.280 --> 00:03:30.960 And so we easily can get all turned around and jumbled up about this thing of the Holy Spirit 00:03:30.960 --> 00:03:33.439 living in us who believe. 00:03:34.020 --> 00:03:37.560 Sometimes it can even lead to doubt and disillusionment. 00:03:38.539 --> 00:03:39.560 We might wonder, 00:03:39.960 --> 00:03:42.680 if God's Spirit really lives in me, 00:03:42.759 --> 00:03:48.259 then why do I still feel so strongly the pull of sin? 00:03:48.259 --> 00:03:52.560 Or if God's Spirit really lives in me, 00:03:53.939 --> 00:03:55.319 why doesn't it feel like it? 00:03:56.639 --> 00:04:00.919 Shouldn't I be hearing a regular voice speaking to me somewhere deep within? 00:04:00.919 --> 00:04:03.959 Some of us hear that, 00:04:04.039 --> 00:04:04.979 and others of us, 00:04:05.299 --> 00:04:05.919 for some reason, 00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:06.979 don't seem to hear that. 00:04:08.759 --> 00:04:12.500 There's a whole kind of bunch of questions that we have when it comes to the Holy Spirit, 00:04:12.599 --> 00:04:14.619 and I wish I could answer all of these this morning, 00:04:15.459 --> 00:04:18.319 but we won't be able to do all of that this morning. 00:04:18.439 --> 00:04:18.899 But hopefully, 00:04:19.039 --> 00:04:20.519 as we consider Jesus' words, 00:04:20.519 --> 00:04:23.639 we'll get a little bit more clarity and confidence 00:04:23.639 --> 00:04:25.879 when it comes to the Holy Spirit. 00:04:25.959 --> 00:04:27.979 So let's look at what Jesus said. 00:04:28.859 --> 00:04:29.680 If you love me, 00:04:30.379 --> 00:04:31.419 keep my commands, 00:04:31.740 --> 00:04:33.779 and I will ask the Father, 00:04:34.379 --> 00:04:36.560 and he will give you another advocate 00:04:36.560 --> 00:04:38.599 to help you and be with you forever, 00:04:39.560 --> 00:04:41.039 the Spirit of Truth. 00:04:41.040 --> 00:04:45.960 Notice how Jesus refers to this Spirit. 00:04:47.100 --> 00:04:49.700 He describes him as another advocate, 00:04:50.300 --> 00:04:51.900 or depending on your Bible translation, 00:04:52.100 --> 00:04:52.920 another counselor, 00:04:53.700 --> 00:04:54.480 another helper, 00:04:55.260 --> 00:04:56.140 another comforter. 00:04:57.360 --> 00:04:59.820 We'll come back to that whole discussion in a second. 00:05:00.580 --> 00:05:03.160 Jesus also calls him the Spirit of Truth. 00:05:04.660 --> 00:05:07.300 And then talking about this same advocate, 00:05:08.180 --> 00:05:09.780 again down in verse 26, 00:05:09.779 --> 00:05:12.919 he refers to this Spirit of Truth 00:05:12.919 --> 00:05:14.239 as the Holy Spirit, 00:05:14.579 --> 00:05:15.199 the advocate, 00:05:15.359 --> 00:05:16.459 the Holy Spirit, 00:05:16.719 --> 00:05:18.719 whom the Father will send in my name, 00:05:18.779 --> 00:05:19.919 will teach you all things. 00:05:21.339 --> 00:05:24.139 Now this probably sounded strange and mysterious 00:05:24.139 --> 00:05:27.279 even to the disciples that night. 00:05:28.099 --> 00:05:29.439 And yet it's not something 00:05:29.439 --> 00:05:30.959 that they'd never heard about before. 00:05:32.619 --> 00:05:35.079 If you're familiar with the Old Testament, 00:05:35.559 --> 00:05:36.979 all of those Hebrew scriptures 00:05:36.979 --> 00:05:38.819 in the first part of the Bible, 00:05:38.819 --> 00:05:41.099 the Spirit of God is mentioned 00:05:41.099 --> 00:05:42.300 all throughout them. 00:05:43.740 --> 00:05:44.839 He's referred to, 00:05:44.939 --> 00:05:45.719 he's described. 00:05:46.240 --> 00:05:49.079 We'll look at several of those passages quickly. 00:05:50.519 --> 00:05:52.819 God's Spirit was there at the beginning 00:05:52.819 --> 00:05:54.459 when the world was created. 00:05:55.279 --> 00:05:58.100 When the earth was still formless and empty, 00:05:58.500 --> 00:06:00.180 it says that the Spirit of God 00:06:00.180 --> 00:06:01.759 was hovering over the waters. 00:06:01.759 --> 00:06:05.060 Then in the days of the flood, 00:06:05.240 --> 00:06:06.199 just before it, 00:06:06.800 --> 00:06:07.599 the Lord said, 00:06:07.719 --> 00:06:11.740 My Spirit will not contend with man forever. 00:06:12.339 --> 00:06:14.860 There was great wickedness on the earth in those days. 00:06:16.120 --> 00:06:17.839 Then we fast forward all the way 00:06:17.839 --> 00:06:20.099 to the days of Moses at Mount Sinai. 00:06:20.100 --> 00:06:22.280 And it was there that God said 00:06:22.280 --> 00:06:24.340 that He was going to put His Spirit 00:06:24.340 --> 00:06:25.920 on Bezalel 00:06:25.920 --> 00:06:29.900 so that He would have exceptional abilities 00:06:29.900 --> 00:06:31.800 to do artistic design work 00:06:31.800 --> 00:06:32.980 on the Ark of the Covenant 00:06:32.980 --> 00:06:34.040 and the tabernacle. 00:06:35.379 --> 00:06:36.680 Around that same time, 00:06:36.740 --> 00:06:38.720 Numbers 11 verse 17, 00:06:39.379 --> 00:06:41.180 God told Moses 00:06:41.180 --> 00:06:42.860 that He would take some of the Spirit 00:06:42.860 --> 00:06:44.160 that He had given to Moses 00:06:44.160 --> 00:06:46.020 and put it on the leaders, 00:06:46.180 --> 00:06:47.300 the elders of Israel. 00:06:47.300 --> 00:06:49.620 And just a few verses down 00:06:49.620 --> 00:06:50.639 in that same passage, 00:06:50.780 --> 00:06:51.360 verse 25, 00:06:51.639 --> 00:06:52.520 we read that the Spirit 00:06:52.520 --> 00:06:54.500 came to rest on these elders 00:06:54.500 --> 00:06:56.360 and they began to prophesy. 00:06:56.860 --> 00:06:59.079 They began to speak on God's behalf. 00:07:00.340 --> 00:07:01.660 Then we could fast forward 00:07:01.660 --> 00:07:03.860 to the period of the judges, 00:07:04.639 --> 00:07:06.259 the leaders of Israel, 00:07:06.420 --> 00:07:08.360 after they had come into the promised land 00:07:08.360 --> 00:07:11.360 but before they got their first human king. 00:07:11.879 --> 00:07:13.340 And we read again and again 00:07:13.340 --> 00:07:14.480 through the book of Judges 00:07:14.480 --> 00:07:16.879 that the Spirit of the Lord 00:07:16.879 --> 00:07:18.139 or the Spirit of Yahweh 00:07:18.139 --> 00:07:19.639 came upon these men 00:07:19.639 --> 00:07:21.540 and even women powerfully. 00:07:22.480 --> 00:07:24.399 And because of that, 00:07:24.459 --> 00:07:26.459 they did great and wonderful things 00:07:26.459 --> 00:07:27.620 to save Israel, 00:07:27.740 --> 00:07:29.480 to deliver the nation 00:07:29.480 --> 00:07:30.939 through difficult times. 00:07:32.019 --> 00:07:33.240 One of the most famous 00:07:33.240 --> 00:07:34.459 of those judges 00:07:34.459 --> 00:07:35.639 is of course Samson. 00:07:37.339 --> 00:07:40.060 Samson received superhuman strength 00:07:40.060 --> 00:07:42.139 from the Spirit of God 00:07:42.139 --> 00:07:44.199 and did some pretty awesome things with it, 00:07:44.300 --> 00:07:45.779 fighting off, it seems, 00:07:45.779 --> 00:07:48.339 an entire army single-handedly, 00:07:48.539 --> 00:07:49.579 ripping a lion apart 00:07:49.579 --> 00:07:50.779 with his bare hands 00:07:50.779 --> 00:07:52.199 and other things. 00:07:54.119 --> 00:07:55.219 Then we fast forward 00:07:55.219 --> 00:07:56.359 even further than that 00:07:56.359 --> 00:07:57.679 to the days of Nehemiah. 00:07:58.639 --> 00:08:00.559 And he and the people 00:08:00.559 --> 00:08:02.479 back in his day, 00:08:02.579 --> 00:08:04.119 they reflected on all the stuff 00:08:04.119 --> 00:08:05.099 that God had been doing 00:08:05.099 --> 00:08:06.539 in the history of Israel. 00:08:07.179 --> 00:08:08.079 And this is what they said. 00:08:08.159 --> 00:08:08.419 They said, 00:08:08.420 --> 00:08:09.580 the Spirit of --> 00:09:21.320 and the songs. 00:09:22.480 --> 00:09:23.440 And the Spirit of God 00:09:23.440 --> 00:09:25.179 is mentioned many times there. 00:09:26.080 --> 00:09:27.940 This is one of David's prayers 00:09:27.940 --> 00:09:28.720 where he prays 00:09:28.720 --> 00:09:29.600 and admits to God 00:09:29.600 --> 00:09:30.960 that there's nowhere 00:09:30.960 --> 00:09:32.259 that he can hide 00:10:14.039 a descendant of Jesse, 00:10:14.580 --> 00:10:15.580 who would have 00:10:15.580 --> 00:10:17.060 the Spirit of Yahweh 00:10:17.060 --> 00:10:18.060 rest on him. 00:10:19.120 --> 00:10:58.940 would pour out His Spirit 00:10:58.940 --> 00:11:00.379 on all of His people. 00:11:01.200 --> 00:11:02.679 Perhaps one of the most famous 00:11:02.679 --> 00:11:04.019 is Joel chapter 2, 00:11:04.100 --> 00:11:04.960 verse 28. 00:11:05.759 --> 00:11:06.360 And afterward, 00:11:06.600 --> 00:11:07.620 I will pour out 00:11:07.620 --> 00:11:09.039 My Spirit on all people. 00:11:09.919 --> 00:11:11.100 Your sons and daughters 00:11:11.100 --> 00:11:11.899 will prophesy, 00:11:12.080 --> 00:11:12.659 your old men 00:11:12.659 --> 00:11:13.639 will dream dreams, 00:11:14.120 -->
