here when he's saying, I am the bread of life, let me give you some context. 00:05:19.159 --> 00:05:24.919 If you look at the very beginning of our passage in verses 1 through 15, verse 4 says it's now the Jewish Passover. 00:05:25.219 --> 00:05:27.339 And yet instead of flocking to Jerusalem, what do we find? 00:05:27.339 --> 00:05:33.959 A bunch of people, a huge crowd, has gone out into the wilderness, into the mountainside, to a remote place to follow Jesus. 00:05:34.539 --> 00:05:41.419 And it says they followed him because he was healing people, like left and right, demonstrating amazing signs of the power of God. 00:05:42.259 --> 00:05:46.959 And then out here in the wilderness, not only does he heal, but he feeds like 5,000 men, probably more. 00:05:46.959 --> 00:05:52.859 This is, you know, 5,000 households, probably, 10, 15, 20, 25,000 people out here. 00:05:53.019 --> 00:05:59.240 And he feeds them by distributing somehow and multiplying five loaves and two fish. 00:05:59.299 --> 00:06:00.139 We all know that story. 00:06:00.240 --> 00:06:03.240 It's the most, it's one of the most famous stories of Jesus, right? 00:06:03.299 --> 00:06:08.259 It's the one of the only, it's the only miracle that is in all four Gospels. 00:06:08.259 --> 00:06:12.620 And, you know, Jesus' resurrection had, what, 500 witnesses? 00:06:13.139 --> 00:06:22.339 But here we have 20, 25,000 witnesses, and we're still telling this story, right, about this Messiah who didn't just come to teach about how to save your soul, 00:06:22.459 --> 00:06:25.819 but who healed and nourished people's bodies too. 00:06:25.939 --> 00:06:26.959 So this is the context. 00:06:27.120 --> 00:06:34.159 Jesus has just fed the 5,000 with bread in abundance because he made these people and he knows the principle. 00:06:34.160 --> 00:06:37.900 He created and established this principle that we all need bread. 00:06:38.120 --> 00:06:38.939 He knows that. 00:06:39.500 --> 00:06:41.140 Our God knows that we all need bread. 00:06:41.840 --> 00:06:50.120 From the very beginning of God's story, we were created to consume, not to be consumeristic, but still to consume for our nourishment and for our life. 00:06:50.220 --> 00:06:54.560 God gave us trees and fruit, and he set us up to explore and enjoy his creation. 00:06:55.140 --> 00:06:58.860 He designed our minds to creatively turn wonderful sourdough goodness, right? 00:07:07.759 --> 00:07:14.300 Our jaws to appreciate the spongy, chewy character of his sourdough bread that we enjoy here at this table. 00:07:15.200 --> 00:07:23.500 See, from the beginning, we were created with natural hungers meant to be supernaturally satisfied by our maker and sustainer. 00:07:24.240 --> 00:07:28.240 Eating was one of the many ways we were meant to relate with God, our creator. 00:07:28.240 --> 00:07:32.500 So the problem was never hunger or our need for bread. 00:07:33.199 --> 00:07:34.280 But here's the second P. 00:07:34.939 --> 00:07:40.019 The problem is that we sought and trusted bread that spoils. 00:07:40.019 --> 00:07:46.599 Even though we were made to hunger for food and made to enjoy daily bread from the hand of our maker and sustainer, 00:07:47.159 --> 00:07:52.060 when in our eating we chose rebellion against God instead of relationship with God, 00:07:52.120 --> 00:07:56.000 when we hungered after that which we were never meant to consume, 00:07:56.799 --> 00:07:59.979 when we took our lives into our own hands and we took our lives out of God's, 00:08:00.599 --> 00:08:02.019 that's when everything went wrong. 00:08:02.500 --> 00:08:05.659 And our natural hunger became a nagging hunger. 00:08:05.660 --> 00:08:10.320 However, the principle remained we all need bread and we all need to eat, we all need to live. 00:08:10.380 --> 00:08:17.860 But what changed was that we put ourselves at odds with the divine supplier of our daily bread. 00:08:18.740 --> 00:08:21.480 Creation was cursed with thorns and thistles. 00:08:21.660 --> 00:08:24.240 Abundant supply devolved to abhorrent scarcity. 00:08:24.940 --> 00:08:27.040 Satiation got exchanged for starvation. 00:08:27.540 --> merely delayed death. 00:08:38.539 --> 00:08:44.039 And this wasn't just food insecurity, but in all of life insecurity that entered into our world, 00:08:44.139 --> 00:08:49.079 into our minds, our psyches, human life stopped being about loving God and enjoying Him forever. 00:08:49.519 --> 00:08:52.459 Stopped being about loving one another as ourselves. 00:08:52.699 --> 00:08:55.159 And it became a futile competition. 00:08:56.179 --> 00:08:58.039 Who can accumulate the most bread? 00:08:58.500 --> 00:09:00.460 Who can delay death the longest? 00:09:00.460 --> 00:09:04.040 And not just bread, but who can accumulate the most stuff? 00:09:04.700 --> 00:09:07.500 Ever since the fall, we've lived by the myth of more. 00:09:07.580 --> 00:09:12.160 If I just had more, then I could live longer, better, stronger. 00:09:13.180 --> 00:09:17.320 But no matter how much we've accumulated, it's never been enough. 00:09:18.320 --> 00:09:20.960 Every few years, you know, I have to quote is the world, this is the lie that Jesus came to speak truth into. 00:10:33.419 --> 00:10:42.719 All the tens of thousands that he fed here on this mountainside, they believed this lie that more bread, more fish, more healing would save them. 00:10:43.699 --> 00:10:48.019 And they wanted a Messiah who would give them more of the things that they thought would bring them life. 00:10:48.139 --> authority would a forced king even have? 00:10:56.639 --> 00:11:00.259 Really, what they wanted was a genie, not an actual king. 00:11:00.259 --> 00:11:06.159 Jesus, in their eyes, was only a means to
