This is a good day. 00:00:16.719 --> 00:00:24.560 In today's text, Matthew records Jesus dismantling the hypocrisy of His day. 00:00:24.559 --> 00:00:35.500 Hypocrisy is the act of claiming some moral standard or beliefs and then living in contradiction to your claims. 00:00:36.640 --> 00:00:40.219 Hypocrisy was not new in Jesus' day. 00:00:40.379 --> 00:00:44.280 It has existed since the fall of man. 00:00:45.439 --> 00:00:53.920 In Genesis chapter 4, we can observe the very first hypocrite, Cain, who offered insincere worship to God. 00:00:53.920 --> 00:00:59.719 And when his hypocrisy was exposed, his true character was revealed in the murder of his brother. 00:01:01.300 --> 00:01:11.820 In 2 Samuel chapter 15, Absalom hypocritically vowed allegiance to his father, King David, while all along plotting to overthrow him. 00:01:12.900 --> 00:01:17.260 The prophets spoke against the hypocrisy of the nation of Israel. 00:01:17.260 --> 00:01:26.040 In Isaiah chapter 1, God is grieved over Israel because their religious devotion is not consistent with their actions. 00:01:27.219 --> 00:01:36.020 And in Amos chapter 5, verse 21 through 24, God deals strongly with the hypocrisy of Israel's worship in that day and their obedience to God. 00:02:24.560 --> 00:02:29.460 There was such similar hypocrisy in Jesus' day. 00:02:29.460 --> 00:02:38.319 Listen to the very scathing words that Jesus speaks to the scribes and the Pharisees in Matthew chapter 23, verse 27 and 28. 00:02:39.000 --> 00:02:39.700 Jesus says, 00:02:39.699 --> 00:02:44.859 Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! 00:02:45.859 --> 00:02:56.500 For you are like whitewashed tombs, which outwardly appear beautiful, but within are full of dead people's bones and all uncleanliness. 00:02:57.280 --> 00:03:07.019 So you also outwardly appear righteous to others, but within you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness. 00:03:07.020 --> 00:03:13.780 In fact, much of the Sermon on the Mount, where our text for today is found, 00:03:14.560 --> 00:03:24.160 is concerned with correcting the gross misunderstanding of the law and subsequent hypocrisy in which Jesus lived. 00:03:25.240 --> 00:03:32.360 Recall that one of the major themes of Jesus' sermon is whole person righteousness. 00:03:32.360 --> 00:03:41.000 He says astounding things in this sermon in chapter 5 we've looked at so far, like in 00:06:11.680 --> 00:06:16.600 that there will be hypocrisy to the end of the age. 00:06:16.600 --> 00:06:22.240 Hypocrisy can be practiced by those who are not in the faith, 00:06:22.800 --> 00:06:24.920 but act as though they are, 00:06:25.240 --> 00:06:28.900 believing that, showing up, doing certain things, 00:06:29.080 --> 00:06:32.580 saying certain things, posting certain things,
