what we see in Psalm 5, 00:01:41.859 --> 00:01:44.840 is exposition of those first two Psalms. 00:01:44.840 --> 00:01:53.000 The prayer of Psalm 5 is based squarely on the truths and promises of Psalms 1 and 2. 00:01:53.640 --> 00:01:59.020 David began, David being the blessed man of Psalm 1 and the anointed king of Psalm 2, 00:01:59.140 --> 00:02:02.560 ultimately pointing to the true and better David in Jesus, 00:02:03.040 --> 00:02:05.840 but praise these truths of Psalm 5. 00:02:06.800 --> 00:02:11.719 In Psalm 5, David's prayer functions as a kind of personal reassurance 00:02:11.719 --> 00:02:15.979 that God will keep his word and do justice against the wicked. 00:02:16.460 --> 00:02:20.520 Now there are parts of this Psalm that we're about to read that are a little bit difficult, 00:02:20.680 --> 00:02:24.039 a lot of times are challenging for us to think about, 00:02:24.280 --> 00:02:29.079 because we like to think of God as a nice, tame God that we can wrap our minds around, 00:02:29.340 --> 00:02:30.599 that doesn't offend anyone, 00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:32.960 and then we get to passages like this, 00:02:33.060 --> 00:02:36.719 but it's important that we see God for who he is. 00:02:36.719 --> 00:02:41.340 And so even through some of these difficult passages that we'll be tackling 00:02:41.340 --> 00:02:43.460 and working our way through this morning, 00:02:43.580 --> 00:02:47.159 it's important to see that God is at work, 00:02:47.319 --> 00:02:49.479 that God is in the midst of this. 00:02:49.579 --> 00:02:51.060 And so with this in to begin with, 00:04:54.139 --> 00:04:57.959 I want us to see the importance of being dependent on God. 00:04:59.199 --> 00:05:02.579 Dependence on God is what we see that comes out of this. to listen and pick out what David is doing 00:05:11.879 --> 00:05:14.020 and when he is doing it. 00:05:14.300 --> 00:05:14.720 He says, 00:05:14.939 --> 00:05:17.300 Give ear to my words, O Lord. 00:05:27.879 --> 00:05:30.139 And so what David is doing, he's praying. 00:05:30.960 --> 00:05:33.000 And what we're showing next is when he's praying. 00:05:33.000 --> 00:05:36.120 He says, O Lord, in the morning you hear my voice. 00:05:36.120 --> 00:05:41.319 In the morning I prepare a sacrifice for you and watch. 00:05:42.139 --> 00:05:47.399 You see, starting your day with the Lord shows and produces dependence on him. 00:05:48.379 --> 00:05:51.360 David is praying to God here in the morning. 00:05:51.720 --> 00:05:54.019 You can hear the desperation in his words. 00:05:54.360 --> 00:05:57.939 He is begging God to listen to him and listen to his words. 00:05:58.340 --> 00:06:00.780 There's a sense of urgency in this prayer, 00:06:01.240 --> 00:06:05.000 showing David's desperation and his dependence on God. 00:06:05.000 --> 00:06:08.019 And it says he's starting his day this way. 00:06:08.439 --> 00:06:11.920 Starting his day showing that he is dependent on God. 00:06:12.519 --> 00:06:18.160 Now I know that we all have different times when we are most fully present with God 00:06:18.160 --> 00:06:22.560 and different times in which we can have a quiet time, have that time with God. 00:06:22.660 --> 00:06:25.779 Some of you may not even fully wake up until 10 o'clock 00:06:25.779 --> 00:06:30.000 or after you've had a couple cups of coffee or a couple pots of coffee for some of you. 00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:35.300 But there's a time, there's an importance to this of starting your day 00:06:35.300 --> 00:06:38.980 when you wake up saying, God, I need you. 00:06:39.759 --> 00:06:40.879 I need you now. 00:06:41.680 --> 00:06:43.759 I can't do this day without you. 00:06:43.839 --> 00:06:48.779 So David is starting his day with this dependence on God, 00:06:48.920 --> 00:06:53.139 where he is showing that he is in desperate need of God. 00:06:53.139 --> 00:06:57.579 One of the many wonderful benefits to prayer in our lives 00:06:57.579 --> 00:07:02.180 is it shows in a very real way our dependence on God, 00:07:02.740 --> 00:07:07.819 which sadly I think is one of the reasons that we don't pray as we should. 00:07:08.419 --> 00:07:13.719 Because in our lives we aren't doing anything where we are forced to be dependent on God. 00:07:14.419 --> 00:07:20.079 We like to live comfortable, safe lives where we feel like we are the ones in control. 00:07:20.079 --> 00:07:22.899 So let's only do things that we're comfortable with. 00:07:22.979 --> 00:07:26.560 Let's only do things that we know what the outcome is going to be 00:07:34.339 --> 00:07:39.000 And the truth is, this often is coming from a place of insecurity and anxiety. 00:07:39.719 --> 00:07:42.399 Because we want to control all aspects of our life. rely on our own abilities and we want to control those situations. 00:07:52.980 --> 00:07:55.719 The truth is that we are not in control. 00:07:55.800 --> 00:08:01.160 And the security that we are is not how God intended. 00:08:42.379 --> 00:08:48.419 You see in John 15, Jesus reminds us in a very real way of our desperate need for him. 00:08:48.980 --> 00:08:54.259 And so as David is coming to God right here in this desperate situation in his life 00:08:54.259 --> 00:08:56.419 where he's saying, God, I'm dependent on you. 00:08:56.559 --> 00:09:00.079 Jesus reminds us in John 15 that this is for all of us. 00:09:00.079 --> 00:09:03.860 He says there, he says, abide in me and I in you. 00:09:04.279 --> 00:09:09.339 As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, 00:09:09.939 --> 00:09:13.000 neither can you unless you abide in me. 00:09:13.559 --> 00:09:16.159 I am the vine, you are the branches. 00:09:16.319 --> 00:09:22.019 Whoever abides in me and I in giant, he's dependent on God. 00:13:10.439 --> 00:13:13.899 There are times in David's life as king that he was dependent. 00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:15.299 There were times when he wasn't. 00:13:15.299 --> 00:13:26.919 Because let's face it, so many times when things are going well for us, when we think we have everything figured out, it's those times where it's hardest to be dependent on God. 00:13:27.719 --> 00:13:31.959 Because all of a sudden, we start looking at ourselves and thinking we've got it all figured out. 00:13:31.960 --> 00:13:35.580 But it's important that we must see our dependence on God. 00:13:35.660 --> 00:13:38.200 I heard it said one time this way by a pastor. 00:13:38.340 --> 00:13:43.160 He says, if dependence is the objective, then weakness is an advantage. 00:13:43.160 --> 00:13:47.960 Because in those moments of weakness, we're forced to be dependent on God. 00:13:48.660 --> 00:13:56.400 But now at this point in David's life, when he's on the run from Absalom, his son, he is forced to be dependent on God. 00:13:56.399 --> 00:13:59.399 And this is what gives his life strength. 00:13:59.679 --> 00:14:05.980 To build this confidence in and dependence spoken about all through the psalms up to this point. 00:17:09.660 --> 00:17:14.860 Up to this point, we see each of the preceding psalms has spoken of the wicked through different, 00:17:15.259 --> 00:17:16.440 though differently in each psalm. 00:17:16.559 --> 00:17:20.299 Psalm 1 considers the way of the wicked as opposed to the way of the righteous. 00:17:20.299 --> 00:17:26.419 Psalm 2 traces the rebellion of the wicked against God, particularly that of the kings 00:17:26.419 --> 00:17:27.500 and the rulers of the earth. 00:17:27.599 --> 00:17:33.220 In Psalm 3, the psalmist has been attacked by wicked persons and asked God for protection 00:17:33.220 --> 00:17:34.000 from them. 00:17:34.440 --> 00:17:39.899 In Psalm 4, the wicked have slandered the psalmist and he is asking God for vindications. 00:17:40.839 --> 00:17:45.740 In this psalm that we're studying today, in Psalm 5, what we're seeing is David refers 00:17:45.740 --> 00:17:52.160 to the wicked as those whose reminding himself that God hears when his children call out. 00:18:03.180 --> 00:18:08.539 Later in the psalms, in Psalm 66, another psalmist makes mention of the importance of this 00:18:08.539 --> 00:18:14.299 and how he says, if I had cherished iniquity in my heart, if he had cherished sin in his 00:18:14.299 --> 00:18:17.599 heart, he says the Lord would not have listened. 00:18:18.700 --> 00:18:26.259 And oftentimes, we take sin too lightly, probably because we don't fully understand the righteousness 00:18:26.259 --> 00:18:26.960 of God. 00:18:27.759 --> 00:18:31.619 Probably we take it too lightly because we don't understand the character of God. 00:18:31.619 --> 00:18:36.739 Because if we did, we would not sin as much or as grievously as we do. 00:18:37.379 --> 00:18:41.719 But we live in a time where sin is often celebrated and rarely called out. 00:18:42.359 --> 00:18:44.399 And there's a real danger in this. 00:18:44.839 --> 00:18:48.699 One of those dangers is that we no Charles Spurgeon, he speaks of this joy here in four different ways. 00:25:15.819 --> 00:25:21.539 He says the joy that's being talked about that David has right here in the midst of this is universal. 00:25:22.180 --> 00:25:25.680 He says the joy is universal to all who trust the Lord. 00:25:26.319 --> 00:25:30.259 Let all who take refuge in him rejoice. 00:25:30.259 --> 00:25:38.359 Let everyone who puts their trust and takes their refuge in God, makes God their safety and not anything in this world, 00:25:38.680 --> 00:25:43.879 let those who find God as their refuge, let them rejoice. 00:25:44.819 --> 00:25:47.400 But he also says that he is constant. 00:25:47.900 --> 00:25:49.140 The joy is constant. 00:25:49.259 --> 00:25:51.519 Let them ever sing for joy. 00:25:51.920 --> 00:25:53.779 It's not something that's going to end. 00:25:53.859 --> 00:25:55.500 It's going to go on and on forever. 00:25:55.500 --> 00:26:01.160 The joy that we get to experience as believers notes, he says, a man may be sad, though he cannot explain his sadness. 00:26:54.740 --> 00:26:59.339 Or he may be greatly glad, though he cannot set forth the reasons for his joy. 00:26:59.939 --> 00:27:05.019 But the joy of a believer in God has a firm foundation. 00:27:06.000 --> 00:27:08.379 It's not the baseless fabric of a vision. 00:27:08.879 --> 00:27:14.879 The joy of faith burns like coals, and yet it can be calmly explained and justified. 00:27:14.880 --> 00:27:19.920 The joyful believer is no lunatic carried away by delusion. 00:27:20.600 --> 00:27:25.260 He has a because which somehow get the idea that we bear blessings by our works. 00:29:40.160 --> 00:29:43.860 After throwing overboard our works as a means of salvation, 00:29:44.220 --> 00:29:48.880 we drag them back on board as a means of maintaining favor with God. 00:29:48.880 --> 00:29:55.960 All of a sudden we start this vicious cycle all over again that where we have to do in order to gain. 00:29:56.700 --> 00:30:03.380 Let us continue in our dependence because that is where joy is found. 00:30:04.380 --> 00:30:07.600 So is there any place in the Christian life for the practice of spiritual disciplines? it can be an expression of love and gratitude because we already have his favor through the righteousness of Christ. 00:30:50.120 --> 00:30:52.880 Righteous living is essential to the believer, 00:30:53.279 --> 00:31:00.940 but it comes from a relationship with Jesus and not as a means of getting or even keeping that relationship. 00:31:00.940 --> 00:31:04.940 So as we close, I want to ask you a couple of questions this morning. 00:31:05.980 --> 00:31:11.519 To begin with, have you ever experienced salvation by depending on Jesus? 00:31:12.660 --> 00:31:17.059 In other words, have you placed your faith and your trust in Jesus to save you from your sins? 00:31:17.360 --> 00:31:21.660 Not based on your works, but based on Christ's work on the cross. 00:31:22.480 --> 00:31:26.720 If
