beings apart from every other species that we know of. 00:03:07.759 --> 00:03:15.739 Human beings long for meaning, identity, and purpose, and we don't flourish apart from those things. 00:03:17.039 --> 00:03:23.259 Over the years, writers and artists and philosophers and poets have wrestled with these big questions of life. 00:03:23.259 --> 00:03:37.239 But one of the texts that has been around the longest and that has consistently shaped cultures and societies, families, and individuals ever since it was first written is the book of Genesis. 00:03:38.459 --> 00:03:43.680 For thousands of years, Genesis has not only told a story about our origins, that is where we came from, 00:03:43.719 --> 00:03:52.680 but it also speaks to our identity, who we are today, and it even hints at our ultimate destiny, where we're headed in the future. 00:03:53.959 --> 00:03:58.439 This fall, we'll be looking at the first 11 chapters of Genesis. 00:03:58.659 --> 00:04:03.399 And week by week, we'll and looking at New Haven as a whole. 00:04:36.439 --> 00:04:44.459 If you're new in town, it's worth sort of driving or hiking up to one of these outlooks at some point because you can see the contours of the land. 00:04:45.439 --> 00:04:52.079 You can see the Long Island Sound on the south and the Quinnipiac River on the east and some smaller rivers on the west. 00:04:52.079 --> 00:04:59.459 You can see the familiar landmarks, the tall buildings downtown, the tree-lined streets, the Yale campus, Southern Connecticut State, Wilber Cross High School. 00:04:59.639 --> 00:05:04.079 You can begin to grasp how the city fits together as a whole. 00:05:05.699 --> 00:05:11.659 Like the city of New Haven, the opening chapters of Genesis can be both exhilarating and disorienting. 00:05:12.599 --> 00:05:15.339 On the one hand, these chapters are endlessly fascinating. 00:05:15.339 --> 00:05:19.779 They've inspired countless works of art and literature over the centuries. 00:05:20.759 --> 00:05:31.839 Stories that might be familiar to you like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, Cain killing his brother Abel, Noah and the flood, the Tower of Babel. 00:05:33.439 --> 00:05:37.039 But at the same time, reading these chapters can also feel disorienting. 00:05:37.040 --> 00:05:48.080 Now, in part, this is because these chapters have become the source or subject, I don't think they're the source, but they are the subject of numerous controversies and questions. 00:05:48.980 --> 00:05:55.280 So let me just acknowledge some of the questions that are out there, some of the questions that you may be bringing with you as we approach Genesis. 00:05:55.480 --> 00:05:57.160 So you may have questions about science. 00:05:58.360 --> 00:06:03.160 How does Genesis relate to modern scientific theories like the Big Bang and evolution? 00:06:03.160 --> 00:06:10.060 Now, this is a big topic, so we're going to take two weeks at the end of September in Adult 00:06:31.120 --> 00:06:36.420 And I think there is a very good case to be made for Moses playing a primary role. 00:06:37.560 --> 00:06:42.459 However, many scholars completely dismiss that idea and don't even take it seriously. 00:06:43.439 --> 00:06:49.819 Now, I won't try to resolve that question here and now, but I've written a handout, and it's on the back table, and you can take it, world that he had created in the flood? 00:07:51.520 --> 00:07:56.180 So many questions, and all of these are legitimate, some more important than others. 00:07:56.540 --> 00:07:59.060 Many we will address over the next three months. 00:07:59.060 --> 00:08:05.680 But you know, if we immediately focus on all the questions that we bring with us as modern people, 00:08:05.839 --> 00:08:08.579 many of which reflect our own cultural assumptions, 00:08:09.459 --> 00:08:13.340 it's possible to miss the point of Genesis itself. 00:08:14.660 --> 00:08:19.500 So I want to acknowledge these questions, but I also want to put them to the side for right now, 00:08:20.079 --> 00:08:24.139 and begin by dealing with Genesis on its own terms. 00:08:24.939 --> 00:08:27.340 So open your Bible to the book of Genesis. 00:08:29.060 --> 00:08:31.639 This morning, I want to focus on three things. 00:08:31.780 --> 00:08:34.080 Number one is the structure of Genesis. 00:08:34.299 --> 00:08:35.379 How is the book organized? 00:08:36.659 --> 00:08:38.659 Second is the audience of Genesis. 00:08:38.860 --> 00:08:40.159 Who is the book written to? 00:08:40.980 --> 00:08:44.399 And third, the main character of Genesis. 00:08:46.220 --> 00:08:48.159 So first, the structure of Genesis. 00:08:48.379 --> 00:08:50.259 Now, when Genesis was first written down, 00:08:50.360 --> 00:08:54.419 there were no chapter and verse markers like we see in our modern Bibles. 00:08:54.740 --> 00:08:57.379 The chapter numbers were added in the 13th century, 00:08:57.379 --> 00:08:59.919 and the verse numbers were added in the 16th century, 00:09:00.100 --> 00:09:05.580 simply so that it would be easier to explain to somebody else which part you were referring to. 00:09:07.179 --> 00:09:11.259 But we do see in the text of Genesis a very clear and orderly structure. 00:09:11.419 --> 00:09:12.659 Now, if you look in your bulletin, 00:09:13.279 --> 00:09:14.919 in one of the middle pages in your bulletin, 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:19.539 I've outlined the important parts of this structure, the relevant verses. 00:09:19.539 --> 00:09:21.699 But if you're looking at a Bible, 00:09:21.819 --> 00:09:23.259 Genesis begins by saying, 00:09:23.459 --> 00:09:27.059 in the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. 00:09:27.139 --> 00:09:28.379 And in fact, in Hebrew Bibles, 00:09:28.559 --> 00:09:31.399 Genesis is known by that first Hebrew word, 00:09:31.719 --> 00:09:32.939 Bereshith, or beginning. 00:09:33.659 --> 00:09:35.120 It's the book of beginnings. 00:09:35.339 --> 00:09:36.879 And Genesis describes two beginnings. 00:09:37.939 --> 00:09:40.699 So chapters 1 to 11, which we'll be looking at this fall, 00:09:41.059 --> 00:09:42.579 describe the beginning of the world. 00:09:42.580 --> 00:09:47.200 And these chapters have sort of a wide-angle, global view. 00:09:48.100 --> 00:09:50.460 The rest of the book, chapters 12 through 50, 00:09:50.920 --> 00:09:53.720 describes the beginning of God's people Israel. 00:09:54.600 --> 00:09:55.720 Starting in chapter 12, 00:09:55.800 --> 00:10:00.920 the focus narrows way into Abraham and his family and his descendants. 00:10:01.879 --> 00:10:04.500 And you can see that these are the two major parts of Genesis 00:10:04.500 --> 00:10:06.780 because each of the parts has five sections 00:10:06.780 --> 00:10:08.860 that all begin with the same heading. 00:10:08.860 --> 00:10:11.279 If you look at chapter 2, verse 4, 00:10:12.259 --> 00:10:16.300 the first heading in the first part of Genesis, 00:10:16.480 --> 00:10:16.720 it says, 00:10:17.019 --> 00:10:19.700 these are the generations of the heavens and the earth 00:10:19.700 --> 00:10:20.800 when they were created. 00:10:22.240 --> 00:10:24.200 Then if you go to chapter 5, verse 1, 00:10:24.279 --> 00:10:26.259 it says this same similar phrase, 00:10:26.379 --> 00:10:28.539 this is the book of the generations of Adam. 00:10:29.240 --> 00:10:30.379 Chapter 6, verse 9, 00:10:30.440 --> 00:10:31.800 these are the generations of Noah. 00:10:31.960 --> 00:10:32.840 Chapter 10, verse 1, 00:10:32.960 --> 00:10:34.899 these are the generations of the sons of Noah. 00:10:35.200 --> 00:10:36.379 And chapter 11, verse 10, 00:10:36.440 --> 00:10:37.620 these are the generations of Shem. 00:10:37.620 --> 00:10:39.820 In other translations, 00:10:40.000 --> 00:10:41.480 these verses might be translated, 00:10:41.639 --> 00:10:44.700 this is the family line of so-and-so, 00:10:44.779 --> 00:10:48.080 or this is the account of so-and-so. 00:10:48.139 --> 00:10:49.659 But in Hebrew, it's always the same word, 00:10:49.899 --> 00:10:51.919 regardless of how it's translated. 00:10:53.179 --> 00:10:56.860 And you might notice a couple of things from this structure. 00:10:57.080 --> 00:11:01.700 First, the sections alternate between narratives, or stories, 00:11:02.200 --> 00:11:04.220 and genealogies, or lists. 00:11:04.220 --> 00:11:07.160 And this was very common in many ancient writings. 00:11:07.600 --> 00:11:09.840 Story, list, story, list. 00:11:10.240 --> 00:11:13.700 The other thing you might notice is that the first chapter of Genesis, 00:11:13.980 --> 00:11:15.720 through to chapter 2, verse 3, 00:11:16.160 --> 00:11:18.580 stands apart from the rest of the book. 00:11:19.399 --> 00:11:21.960 So it's not just another section. 00:11:22.800 --> 00:11:25.820 It's more like a prologue or a prelude. 00:11:26.200 --> 00:11:28.920 As we'll see next week, it's full of poetic patterns. 00:11:28.919 --> 00:11:33.719 It's sort of like a movie trailer that sets the stage for what is to come. 00:11:35.519 --> 00:11:38.559 So Genesis is very intentionally ordered, 00:11:38.679 --> 00:11:40.379 has a very clear and orderly structure. 00:11:40.519 --> 00:11:43.120 It's thoughtfully arranged, not randomly thrown together. 00:11:43.500 --> 00:11:46.620 And it highlights these two major movements, 00:11:46.699 --> 00:11:47.719 the beginning of the world, 00:11:47.879 --> 00:11:50.659 and then the beginning of God's people Israel, 00:11:51.019 --> 00:11:54.459 through whom he would renew the whole world, ultimately. 00:11:54.460 --> 00:11:56.900 So that's how Genesis is structured. 00:11:57.860 --> 00:12:02.280 Second, let me speak a bit to the audience of Genesis. 00:12:02.420 --> 00:12:06.620 In other words, who was the book of Genesis originally written for? 00:12:08.000 --> 00:12:12.080 Well, I think we can definitely say two things here. 00:12:12.220 --> 00:12:15.700 First, Genesis was written for the people of Israel. 00:12:16.860 --> 00:12:20.560 In other words, Genesis was written for people who had already experienced 00:12:20.559 --> 00:12:23.659 God's mighty power and rescuing grace, 00:12:23.879 --> 00:12:27.859 and it was written for them so they would come to know their God better. 00:12:29.479 --> 00:12:30.919 You might say, well, how do we know this? 00:12:30.979 --> 00:12:34.399 Because Genesis is connected to the four books that follow it. 00:12:35.059 --> 00:12:39.579 And it's always been connected to Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. 00:12:39.659 --> 00:12:41.199 These are the first five books of the Bible. 00:12:41.599 --> 00:12:44.479 That's why they're sometimes called the Pentateuch five books. 00:12:44.939 --> 00:12:47.099 They contain the early history of the people of Israel. 00:12:47.219 --> 00:12:49.839 They contain the laws that the people of Israel were to live by. 00:12:49.840 --> 00:12:53.800 And these books were written down and read aloud over the centuries 00:12:53.800 --> 00:12:56.000 among the people of Israel. 00:12:56.960 --> 00:13:00.360 So Genesis was written to help people who were already believers 00:13:00.360 --> 00:13:04.519 in the God of the Bible to get to know their God better 00:13:04.519 --> 00:13:07.440 and to find their place in the world that he had made. 00:13:08.280 --> 00:13:12.759 So if you're a Christian believer today, Genesis is for you. 00:13:13.900 --> 00:13:18.480 And Genesis is an invitation to behold your God. 00:13:18.480 --> 00:13:22.840 To get to know this God whom you have begun to experience 00:13:22.840 --> 00:13:24.879 and already have come to believe, 00:13:25.300 --> 00:13:27.899 to get to know him better and to find your place 00:13:27.899 --> 00:13:29.860 in the world that he has made. 00:13:30.940 --> 00:13:34.860 But second, I'd also argue that Genesis is also written 00:13:34.860 --> 00:13:39.420 for people who don't or don't yet believe in the God of the Bible. 00:13:39.419 --> 00:13:42.919 If you don't believe in the God of the Bible, 00:13:43.059 --> 00:13:44.740 I think that Genesis is an appeal. 00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:48.240 Consider this God. 00:13:49.919 --> 00:13:51.919 Now, why would I say that? 00:13:52.860 --> 00:13:55.120 Well, the chapters we're looking at this fall, 00:13:55.379 --> 00:13:57.659 in particular, are written in a way 00:13:57.659 --> 00:14:00.959 that would have introduced the God of Israel 00:14:00.959 --> 00:14:05.779 clearly and powerfully to anyone from the surrounding nations 00:14:05.779 --> 00:14:10.279 who had different religious and philosophical and moral beliefs. 00:14:11.679 --> 00:14:15.079 You see, the people of Israel never lived on an island. 00:14:16.240 --> 00:14:19.199 They were never completely isolated from the rest of the world. 00:14:19.299 --> 00:14:21.019 They always had neighbors. 00:14:21.519 --> 00:14:23.939 The Egyptians, the Babylonians, the Canaanites. 00:14:24.019 --> 00:14:25.319 Now, sometimes they're fighting them. 00:14:25.419 --> 00:14:27.019 Sometimes they're coexisting with them. 00:14:27.279 --> 00:14:28.699 Sometimes they're conquered by them. 00:14:28.759 --> 00:14:31.559 But they're always interacting with them 00:14:31.559 --> 00:14:33.079 in one way or another. 00:14:33.080 --> 00:14:35.300 And each of these surrounding nations 00:14:35.300 --> 00:14:37.840 also had their own stories 00:14:37.840 --> 00:14:41.100 of how the world came to be 00:14:41.100 --> 00:14:44.900 and how their nation came to be. 00:14:45.960 --> 00:14:47.800 Now, there are three major stories 00:14:47.800 --> 00:14:51.040 that we'll see in the course of Genesis 1 through 11. 00:14:51.200 --> 00:14:52.460 First, the creation. 00:14:52.639 --> 00:14:54.580 And that's really chapters 1 through 4, 00:14:54.820 --> 00:14:55.900 how the world began, 00:14:56.200 --> 00:14:57.640 and then how it all went wrong. 00:14:58.600 --> 00:15:00.020 Then there's the flood, 00:15:00.720 --> 00:15:02.900 which is really chapters 5 through 9. 00:15:03.080 --> 00:15:05.280 How everything got washed away 00:15:05.280 --> 00:15:06.960 and then made new again. 00:15:08.020 --> 00:15:10.440 And then there's the Tower of Babel. 00:15:11.100 --> 00:15:14.379 That word Babel is referring to the ancient city of Babylon. 00:15:15.700 --> 00:15:17.720 Now, every one of these topics, 00:15:17.820 --> 00:15:20.560 the creation, the flood, the Tower of Babel, 00:15:20.639 --> 00:15:22.160 would have been familiar to people 00:15:22.160 --> 00:15:24.660 from the nations that surrounded Israel. 00:15:25.800 --> 00:15:28.360 So, for example, the Babylonians had a poem 00:15:28.360 --> 00:15:30.379 entitled Enuma Elish, 00:15:30.379 --> 00:15:34.200 which begins with a story of how the world was created 00:15:34.200 --> 00:15:36.139 from unformed waters, 00:15:36.139 --> 00:15:38.659 and it concludes with the building of a tower 00:15:38.659 --> 00:15:40.460 in Babylon as a temple 00:15:40.460 --> 00:15:42.620 to the Babylonian god Marduk. 00:15:43.899 --> 00:15:46.419 Other nations also told stories about a great flood. 00:15:46.980 --> 00:15:48.120 The Epic of Gilgamesh, 00:15:48.200 --> 00:15:49.399 the Sumerian flood story, 00:15:49.500 --> 00:15:50.419 the Atrahasis epic, 00:15:50.539 --> 00:15:52.439 all speak about a great flood 00:15:52.439 --> 00:15:54.620 sent by the gods as a judgment 00:15:54.620 --> 00:15:55.840 on the human race. 00:15:55.840 --> 00:15:59.460 So, you see, if you were living in the ancient world, 00:16:00.100 --> 00:16:01.920 the topics that Genesis covers 00:16:01.920 --> 00:16:04.040 and the questions that Genesis addresses 00:16:04.040 --> 00:16:06.379 would have seemed very normal. 00:16:07.420 --> 00:16:09.019 We might read Genesis and think 00:16:09.019 --> 00:16:11.860 that some parts are unusual or strange, 00:16:12.019 --> 00:16:14.379 but they wouldn't have seemed unusual or strange 00:16:14.379 --> 00:16:16.800 in the topics that it is addressing. 00:16:18.100 --> 00:16:20.200 So, Genesis was addressing common questions 00:16:20.200 --> 00:16:21.400 that people had back then. 00:16:21.399 --> 00:16:25.740 And I think if we can hear and interpret Genesis rightly, 00:16:25.980 --> 00:16:27.259 we'll see that it also speaks 00:16:27.259 --> 00:16:29.240 to many of the questions that people have today. 00:16:30.740 --> 00:16:32.240 So, Genesis speaks to believers, 00:16:32.740 --> 00:16:35.059 and it invites us to behold our God, 00:16:35.159 -->
