and requirements for late-term abortions. 00:02:11.680 --> 00:02:16.719 Well, some other states are almost doing the exact opposite, 00:02:16.960 --> 00:02:23.920 and they're seeking to define fetal what's the state of affairs in our own country and here in our province, Saskatchewan, when it comes to abortion? 00:03:29.159 --> 00:03:33.200 A bit of the legal landscape to refresh your memories. 00:03:33.840 --> 00:03:38.640 Up until 1969, abortion was illegal in Canada. 00:03:38.639 --> 00:03:42.979 A woman could be imprisoned for up to two years. 00:03:43.599 --> 00:03:48.899 And a doctor could get a life sentence in prison for aborting a baby. 00:03:49.619 --> 00:03:55.919 In 1969, under the government of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau, the criminal code was amended 00:03:55.919 --> 00:04:08.259 so that women could get an abortion or have an abortion done in cases where the health or life of the mother was threatened. 00:04:10.339 --> 00:04:14.259 In 1988, everything changed. 00:04:14.259 --> 00:04:27.079 The Supreme Court of Canada decided that prohibiting abortion under the criminal code violates a woman's charter right to life, liberty, and the security of the person. 00:04:27.759 --> 00:04:30.480 Chief Justice Brian Dixon said this, 00:04:30.480 --> 00:04:59.780 Since 1988 and that ruling, we have been one of only a few countries in the whole world with no laws. 00:04:59.779 --> 00:05:01.679 governing abortion. 00:05:03.319 --> 00:05:16.979 One of the abortion rights groups here in Canada actually has right on their website that we're the only democratic country in the world with no laws governing abortion. 00:05:18.419 --> 00:05:29.479 Since 1988, abortion has become a routine, publicly funded procedure that takes place in hospitals and clinics across our country. 00:05:29.779 --> 00:05:36.739 According to the Canadian Encyclopedia Online, there was a Globe and Mail survey that was done in 2010. 00:05:37.739 --> 00:05:49.239 And the results of that survey suggested that 52% of Canadians were pro-choice, while 27% were pro-life, and 21% would not affiliate with either. 00:05:49.240 --> 00:05:55.360 On the whole, political parties have generally avoided this issue in Parliament. 00:05:55.560 --> 00:05:57.220 It's a very hotly debated issue. 00:05:59.060 --> 00:06:08.439 The most recent stats that we have on the number of abortions here in Canada come from 2017. 00:06:08.439 --> 00:06:22.819 The Canadian Institute for Health Information collects data that's reported by provincial health ministries about abortions done in hospitals and clinics across the country. 00:06:22.819 --> 00:06:29.899 But before I give you these numbers, you should know that there's a bit of an unknown factor in them. 00:06:30.899 --> 00:06:38.699 It says right on the data sheets, reporting for clinics is voluntary. 00:06:39.579 --> 00:06:40.579 It's not a requirement. 00:06:40.579 --> 00:06:47.560 And so we can't be sure how over 40 years. 00:08:47.559 --> 00:08:51.120 It's a simple procedure which only takes about 5 to 10 minutes 00:08:51.120 --> 00:08:55.500 during which pregnancy tissue is removed from the uterus.
