And then I was given a garland to wear, which I didn't wear while 00:00:44.480 --> 00:00:53.760 I spoke, but the welcome was slightly different. And I wonder when you think of your welcome from God, 00:00:53.759 --> 00:01:02.479 God. Is your welcome from God, your invitation from God, is it a reserved Scottish invitation? 00:01:03.519 --> 00:01:12.479 Does He put out His hand and shake it firmly and warmly and tell you you're welcome, or does He do 00:01:12.479 --> 00:01:18.000 more than that? What I want us to think about this morning as you start on your mission Sunday, 00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:25.519 sharing a message that I'm pleased to be able to share in some ways in different places about how 00:01:25.519 --> 00:01:34.079 people are welcome to Jesus. I want you to know again that you're welcome to Jesus. And on the strength 00:01:34.079 --> 00:01:42.799 of your welcome to Jesus, I want you to know that you are welcome to invite others to Jesus. And that's 00:01:42.799 --> 00:01:51.200 what the mission of the church is, isn't it? To welcome, to invite people to Jesus. We sometimes 00:01:51.200 --> 00:01:57.679 think as we start that the God of the Old Testament, the God who gave us these laws that sometimes we 00:01:57.679 --> 00:02:05.759 struggle to obey, the God whose righteous acts of judgment sometimes send shivers down our spines when 00:02:05.760 --> 00:02:12.960 we read the Old Testament. We think that He is not as welcoming as the New Testament. So, what I want 00:02:12.960 --> 00:02:20.800 to do is just to let you know that you were invited to Jesus, you are invited to Jesus, you can invite 00:02:20.800 --> 00:02:30.480 to Jesus, and you will be invited to Jesus. So, we read first of all in the Old Testament in Isaiah chapter 55, 00:02:30.479 --> 00:02:38.479 and there we see that long before Jesus came to the earth, you were invited and we are invited to come 00:02:38.479 --> 00:02:47.599 and to put our trust in God. Come, all you who are thirsty. When I read a commentary on this years ago, 00:02:47.599 --> 00:02:54.319 it's never left my mind that this come, or if you remember the authorized version, it started, 00:02:54.319 --> 00:03:02.719 ho, everyone who thirsts, that this was given like a market trader. When I arrived in Glasgow as a 00:03:02.719 --> 00:03:08.239 student, one of the first things that surprised me was there would be people on the street and they 00:03:08.239 --> 00:03:14.159 would be shouting, I'll try and copy them, they go, hey, right times! What on earth is that all about? 00:03:15.680 --> 00:03:21.519 In posh language, it's evening times. They were letting you know you could buy the evening times there. 00:03:21.520 --> 00:03:29.040 And if God is like a market trader, when I was in Pakistan this week, there's people going around 00:03:29.040 --> 00:03:35.600 in bicycles shouting that they've got vegetables to sell and they've got brushes to sell. Here we have 00:03:35.600 --> 00:03:46.800 God looking for your attention, shouting or saying loudly, come, come, come, all you who are thirsty. 00:03:46.800 --> 00:03:53.920 What do you need when you come? Come to the waters. This idea of refreshment comes in Isaiah earlier and 00:03:53.920 --> 00:03:59.760 it comes again in the Gospel of John and it comes in the book of Revelation. This idea of having your 00:03:59.760 --> 00:04:05.920 thirst quenched and you who have no money, come buy and eat, come buy wine and milk without money and 00:04:05.920 --> 00:04:15.200 without price. The book of Isaiah describes Him as a just, 00:06:07.919 --> 00:06:17.699 a fair God, and a Savior. That's who He is. He is not different. I didn't have to send him a note and say, 00:06:26.779 --> 00:06:33.839 please, can I come to your church. He graciously extended the invitation. And it's always the same 00:06:33.839 --> 00:06:40.319 with the invitation from God. It's not that we were looking. It's not that we were searching. 00:06:40.959 --> 00:06:47.059 It's not that we were looking for Him and nearly had everything we needed. It's that He, at His initiative, 00:06:47.060 --> 00:06:59.139 extends the invitation to us, and He lets us come. He lets us come to Him where we are, how we are. 00:06:59.379 --> 00:07:05.279 We don't have to fix ourselves. We don't have to change our living situation. There's nobody in this room who is unwelcome 00:07:58.560 --> 00:08:06.420 if they would just come and show Him that they're thirsty. I have a friend who I hadn't seen for 00:08:06.420 --> 00:08:12.459 years, and I met him at a wedding, and he said, we're just five minutes off the A9. Call in if 00:08:12.459 --> 00:08:19.459 you're passing. We might not be in, but call anyway. How many times have I gone to visit him since he said 00:08:19.459 --> 00:08:27.939 that? None. Why? Because he couldn't assure me that he would be there to welcome me. You don't hear 00:08:27.939 --> 00:08:37.940 any qualification. Come. God will be in. I remember in Alt Bay, there was an elder who would always and 00:08:37.940 --> 00:08:45.059 often pray that the people who didn't realize, who hadn't trusted in Jesus would know that he is only 00:08:45.059 --> 00:08:51.399 a prayer away. It's a simple term, but how can you find Him? How can you access Him? You go to God 00:08:51.399 --> 00:08:58.959 in prayer, and when you come to God, you find that you are welcome to Him. Everything is given to you, 00:08:58.980 --> 00:09:06.939 the pardon you need, the wine, the milk, everything that you need. Maybe you need to hear this today, 00:09:07.559 --> 00:09:14.840 and I want you to hear it as if it's from an earnest God. He shouts to get your attention, 00:09:14.840 --> 00:09:22.420 and you're a wee bit tired of hearing it, but please give ear and come to me. He wants to give you life. Next, we see that 00:09:47.940 --> 00:09:55.240 you are invited to come to the Lord Jesus. We find that in the messages that we read in Matthew 00:09:55.240 --> 00:10:05.480 and in the Gospel of John. You're invited to come to Jesus. Jesus speaks to these people, and He tells 00:10:05.480 --> 00:10:15.420 them, come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Then we read in John's 00:10:15.420 --> 00:10:23.000 Gospel that whoever is thirsty, anyone who's thirsty may come, and when they come, streams of living water 00:10:23.000 --> 00:10:30.139 will flow from you. You'll be changed. What happens is that God gives you His Holy Spirit, and that is the 00:10:30.139 --> 00:10:35.860 thing that changes you the most. And then you get to the book of Revelation, just in case we're wondering. 00:10:36.620 --> 00:10:44.919 It basically ends, or near the end, tells us that everyone who is thirsty can come. We are all welcome 00:10:44.919 --> 00:10:53.279 to come and have this thirst quenched. But first of all, look at this invitation from the Lord Jesus. 00:10:53.279 --> 00:11:01.679 It's a free invitation. Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 00:11:02.720 --> 00:11:10.100 I passed a police car at the side of the motorway in Pakistan this week, and I'm always looking out 00:11:10.100 --> 00:11:15.679 for the windows, and that's my problem in college as well, and things like that. But what surprised me 00:11:15.679 --> 00:11:22.740 was in front of the police car, there's a policeman lying down on his prayer mat, praying towards 00:11:22.740 --> 00:11:33.899 Allah he thinks. He's burdened. He can't get on and do his job without this ritual, it seems. 00:11:36.399 --> 00:11:43.120 Jesus is speaking to people who were burdened by trying to please the Pharisees, trying to please 00:11:43.120 --> 00:11:50.340 God by pleasing their leaders rather than by going straight to God and finding their acceptance in Him 00:11:50.340 --> 00:11:57.259 and the forgiveness of sins that comes from Him. Perhaps that can be our problem too. We look at what other 00:11:57.259 --> 00:12:04.800 people think. These people who the burden on Him was breaking them, that they were struggling to live 00:12:04.800 --> 00:12:13.220 their lives freely, and they just couldn't ever, couldn't ever satisfy. I can never be good enough. 00:12:13.220 --> 00:12:22.480 Trying to get God's attention. When I've been phoning home, we've got foster children in the house, 00:12:22.480 --> 00:12:28.639 and one of the things that happens now when I phone home is I can hardly speak to my wife without 00:12:28.639 --> 00:12:35.560 these little faces appearing, and they're not always wanting my attention. They're just jealous that 00:12:35.559 --> 00:12:43.519 they're not getting the attention. They're competing. And we think it's like that with God. Does God listen 00:12:43.519 --> 00:12:49.639 to the young girl over here in the same way that she listens to the wise old man who's followed Him for 00:12:49.639 --> 00:12:58.639 a long time? Whose ear has God got? He's the God who, in Psalm 116, we have this picture of Him 00:12:58.639 --> 00:13:09.139 inclining, turning His ear towards us so that we might hear. And so we come. We come to God, and we come to God 00:13:09.139 --> 00:13:18.500 with this expectation that if we come weary and burdened, He'll give us rest. What does that mean? It means that 00:13:18.500 --> 00:13:26.279 we can trust Him to do what's necessary. I did one of the stupidest things I've ever done in my life yesterday. 00:13:26.279 --> 00:13:36.959 I was in a machine about 500 tons high up in the sky, and I fell asleep. Is that a bit of a stupid 00:13:36.959 --> 00:13:46.639 thing to do? I was sitting beside the emergency exit as well. Why would I do that? Why could I do that? 00:13:46.639 --> 00:13:53.019 Because I trust the pilot. I trust the pilot to get up in the air, to keep it in the air, 00:13:53.019 --> 00:14:01.639 and I trust the pilot to bring it safe to land. Come to Me, all you who are weary, and I will give 00:14:01.639 --> 00:14:10.740 you rest. You can trust the Savior. Trust the Savior to give you a new birth. You can trust the Savior 00:14:10.740 --> 00:14:19.539 not to lose any of those that the Father has given to Him. You can trust the Savior to be willing to come 00:14:19.539 --> 00:14:27.539 back and to take you to be with Him where He is. You can rest. You can rest in what Jesus has done. 00:14:28.219 --> 00:14:34.500 And yes, yes, He says, take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, 00:14:34.639 --> 00:14:40.459 and you'll find rest for your souls. But He will give us the rest as 00:14:54.379 --> 00:15:03.340 He gives us this new burden and this possibility to go and to live for Him. He has done everything 00:15:03.340 --> 00:15:09.779 that we need as He gave Himself for us. Then we move forward into the Gospel of John, 00:15:09.779 --> 00:15:19.699 John 7 verse 37. And I want you to notice again just this idea that we should perhaps grasp. John 7 verse 37, 00:15:19.699 --> 00:15:30.339 on the last and greatest day of the festival, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, 00:15:30.340 --> 00:15:52.019 Why did He say, let everyone who is thirsty come to Me and drink? Why does God make it so vocal? 00:15:52.019 --> 00:15:59.779 Because He wants everyone to hear. He wants everyone to hear that they are invited to come, 00:16:00.179 --> 00:16:08.879 and if they come to Him, they will get what they need. Let everyone who is thirsty come to Me and drink. 00:16:09.659 --> 00:16:16.500 Whoever believes in Me, as Scripture said, rivers of living water will flow from within Him by this. We 00:16:16.500 --> 00:16:21.960 know what He meant. It tells us He meant the Spirit with those who believe in Him were later to receive. 00:16:22.019 --> 00:16:26.819 that you will be changed as the Holy Spirit comes into you. Your life will be different, 00:16:27.139 --> 00:16:34.159 and you can come and get what you need. But you get it from Jesus. And you wouldn't wash anything in that well. And if you drank from that well, 00:16:55.720 --> 00:17:05.039 you would be sick. Even they don't drink from it. It's not good yet. We want to fix it, but I can't 00:17:05.039 --> 00:17:10.779 invite you to come and drink that. Just this week, I had to be very careful what I drank, because if I 00:17:10.779 --> 00:17:18.440 drank the wrong thing, it would make me sick. Make sure the bottle is sealed and all of this sort of 00:17:18.440 --> 00:17:28.299 thing. Why? Because it's poisonous if I don't take the right stuff. Whoever believes in me will be 00:17:28.299 --> 00:17:33.660 changed. And you have to come and drink. You have to go to the one source. And I don't know who I'm 00:17:33.660 --> 00:17:39.060 speaking to. I guess I'm speaking to lots of Christians, and maybe one or two people who are unsure, 00:17:39.779 --> 00:17:47.300 and maybe somebody who's doubting completely. But if you come to the Lord Jesus, you're freely invited, 00:17:47.880 --> 00:17:57.740 and you can come, and you will safely be changed. You will take what He gives you, and it's good for you. 00:17:57.740 --> 00:18:07.019 And it will not harm you or hurt you. It will not poison you. So, when God's 00:18:30.459 --> 00:18:37.439 people take the Lord Jesus, the Holy Spirit comes into our lives, and then we are changed. And the way 00:18:37.439 --> 00:18:47.059 that we live and act, it changes. So, we come, and we drink from this water, and we are satisfied 00:18:47.059 --> 00:18:56.059 with what He gives us. I will praise you, Lord. Although you were angry with me, your anger has 00:18:56.059 --> 00:19:02.759 turned away, and you've comforted me. Surely, God is my salvation. I will trust and not be afraid. 00:19:03.379 --> 00:19:10.379 The Lord, the Lord Himself, is my strength and my defense. He has become my salvation. With joy, 00:19:10.779 --> 00:19:16.879 you will draw water from the wells of salvation. You come to God, you receive what He gives you, 00:19:16.880 --> 00:19:26.320 and then it comes to you again, and you have all that you need. Well, who is this for? Let's just 00:19:26.320 --> 00:19:38.420 make sure we all understand. Who is this for? In Isaiah, we read, come some of you who are thirsty. No, 00:19:38.560 --> 00:19:46.700 come all of you who are thirsty. In John 7, we read, let anyone who is thirsty, 00:19:46.880 --> 00:19:55.620 in verse 38. In verse 38, we read, whoever believes in me, as Scripture has said, streams of living water 00:19:56.320 --> 00:20:07.220 will flow from them. Who can come? Whoever, anyone, all of you. Who can you extend an invitation to? 00:20:08.480 --> 00:20:14.040 Just the ones that look socially acceptable? Or maybe just the ones that look poor enough to be 00:20:14.039 --> 00:20:20.940 desperate for something. Desperate for something. Who can come? Anyone can come. You turn back a page in the Gospel of John, John 6, verse 37, all those the Father gives 00:20:30.000 --> 00:20:41.660 me will come to me. And whoever comes, I will never drive away. Whoever comes to Jesus, God will never 00:20:41.660 --> 00:20:48.240 drive away. And you might be unsure of how you can come, or all of these things. I have this lovely 00:20:48.240 --> 00:20:53.799 picture in my mind. I think it's a lovely picture. It's like, remember primary one. Some of you have put 00:20:53.799 --> 00:21:01.099 children into primary one or nursery. And they were nervous. And mummy held their hand. And then there 00:21:01.099 --> 00:21:09.139 was a teacher waiting to welcome them. And you got the child in, and you settled them. How are you going 00:21:09.139 --> 00:21:15.899 to come to God? Whoever the Father gives to me will come to me, and whoever comes, I'll never drive away. 00:21:15.900 --> 00:21:23.540 Who's pushing you from behind? Well, is it the Father pushing you towards the Son, or is it the Son 00:21:23.540 --> 00:21:29.380 pushing you towards the Father? But you're caught in a sandwich, if you like, between God the Father 00:21:29.380 --> 00:21:35.900 and God the Son, and they're ready to embrace you, and to hold you, and to have you, and never to let you 00:21:35.900 --> 00:21:45.880 go. And you will surely come because you are being sent with that love towards God. So, you can come. 00:21:45.900 --> 00:21:54.200 You can trust. You can have your sins pardoned. You can rest. Another thing that Christians need to 00:21:54.200 --> 00:22:01.360 hear is that you're still invited to come to the Lord Jesus. Even though you've been an idiot, even 00:22:01.360 --> 00:22:08.280 though you have sinned greatly, even though your sins are many and His mercy is more, and even though 00:22:08.280 --> 00:22:15.000 you have doubts, even though you have fears, you are welcome to come to the Lord Jesus. Don't know if 00:22:15.000 --> 00:22:19.900 you buy stuff online, but whenever you buy stuff online, you've got to be careful to click the 00:22:19.900 --> 00:22:25.180 button to make sure that you don't get an email every day to make sure that you buy another pair 00:22:25.180 --> 00:22:30.740 of shoes, or whatever it is. You think, I've got it already. And you might think, I've got it already. 00:22:30.740 --> 00:22:36.640 I've come to Jesus, and I've got it already. Well, I wonder, I wonder, do you need to understand what 00:22:36.640 --> 00:22:42.019 you've got? I wonder, are you holding on to everything that He's given you? If you've grown cold, 00:22:42.019 --> 00:22:48.420 and you think, well, I'm useless for service. This is missions month, and if you knew my heart, 00:22:48.539 --> 00:22:53.160 if you knew my habits, you would think that God doesn't want anything from me. 00:22:54.879 --> 00:23:01.299 Well, maybe you need to fix some of your heart problems and your habits and stop doing things 00:23:01.299 --> 00:23:07.220 that are wrong. But how are you going to please God? How are you going to please God? 00:23:07.220 --> 00:23:14.900 What's the work that God requires? The work that God requires is this, to believe in the one He has 00:23:14.900 --> 00:23:23.400 sent. So come to me, all you who labor and are heavy laden. And what does it look like? I think the 00:23:23.400 --> 00:23:30.079 most beautiful picture of it is in the gospel, when Jesus tells the story of the son who went away, 00:23:30.079 --> 00:23:40.039 give me everything, Dad, before you go and let me go and live my life. And then He goes and He squanders 00:23:40.039 --> 00:23:47.399 it, and He realizes that His Father's servants have more. And so He wants to come back. I'll arise and go 00:23:47.399 --> 00:23:56.099 to my Father. And I think it's one of the sweetest pictures in the whole of Scripture. And when He was a 00:23:56.099 --> 00:24:06.959 long way off, His Father saw Him and was filled with compassion and came running to Him and threw His 00:24:06.959 --> 00:24:15.159 arms around Him and said, Son, do you need to come back? Do you need to come back? Do you think God's 00:24:15.159 --> 00:24:20.939 going to put you into solitary confinement before you come back? Do you think He's going to just put 00:24:20.940 --> 00:24:30.000 you through the mill and make sure that you've done your penance? No, He is a just God and the Savior, 00:24:30.240 --> 00:24:39.880 and He welcomes you to Him. So return, return to Me, and I will return to you, says the Old Testament. 00:24:41.940 --> 00:24:46.799 Don't think that He is like that. I don't know if I'm just preaching to myself, because I think that 00:24:46.799 --> 00:24:53.279 I struggle to believe this. I do struggle to believe that God really, really loves me this much that 00:24:53.279 --> 00:25:03.980 when I say, Father, forgive me, that He freely does it. That He doesn't want to put me on sort of 00:25:03.980 --> 00:25:10.240 parole or something for a few months to check that I'm really sure that I'm sorry, that He's testing 00:25:10.240 --> 00:25:16.200 me or anything like that. I struggle to believe that He is as free and forgiving as He really is. 00:25:17.019 --> 00:25:24.920 But He is. He is. He gives me what I don't deserve, His goodness and His grace and forgiveness. 00:25:27.240 --> 00:25:34.720 And so that motivates me, sometimes slower than it should, but streams of living water will flow from 00:25:34.720 --> 00:25:41.839 within me. She'll be able to say, I can't stop that. I can't help that, because when I came to Jesus 00:25:41.839 --> 00:25:47.480 and I drank, then He gave me everything I need. And there's warnings about turning away. Don't do it.
