primarily as the service they go to, mostly on Sundays. 00:02:07.539 --> 00:02:11.519 Or they think of church as a great place to meet people and make friends, maybe meet available 00:02:11.520 --> and metaphors that are used, there's one that really runs through 00:02:54.900 --> 00:02:57.040 the Bible beginning to end. 00:02:57.120 --> 00:02:59.060 It runs from Genesis all the way to opinion here, that with all of the rhetoric 00:03:36.379 --> 00:03:42.000 and particularly conservative Christians doing so much to defend the traditional family and 00:03:42.000 --> 00:03:47.460 defend traditional family values, that it may be that we've lost sight of the fact that 00:03:47.460 --> 00:03:53.560 we as the church are actually called to be a family, specifically for people who don't 00:03:53.560 --> 00:03:54.340 have families. 00:03:55.320 --> 00:04:02.120 That we're called to be a family for the lonely, to be a family for people who, for whatever 00:04:02.120 --> 00:04:05.000 reason, are alone in the world. 00:04:05.980 --> 00:04:12.520 And so we're going to be looking at this idea because I believe that everybody in this room 00:04:12.520 --> 00:04:14.340 and We'll primarily be looking at Genesis chapter 12, because this is the place where God first 00:05:15.079 --> 00:05:16.900 makes this promise of a family. 00:05:17.960 --> 00:05:22.019 And right away, we begin learning something about what it means to be God's family in the 00:05:22.019 --> 00:05:22.300 world. 00:05:22.540 --> 00:05:25.100 And we learn a couple of things from these three verses. 00:05:25.280 --> 00:05:29.319 We learn this, that as God's family, we are guided by God's purpose. 00:05:29.319 --> 00:05:36.300 And then second, we learn that we are empowered by God's blessing. 00:06:31.079 So the first thing that we see in Genesis 12 about God's family in the world is this, 00:06:31.160 --> 00:06:33.600 that God's family is guided by God's purpose. 00:06:34.439 --> 00:06:37.899 We, as a part of this, are called to be guided by God's purpose. 00:06:38.639 --> 00:06:43.980 Just to summarize the first 11 chapters of Genesis, God creates the world. 00:06:44.120 --> 00:06:48.819 He creates a good and beautiful and perfect world and us, and he calls it very good. 00:06:48.819 --> 00:06:57.719 And then human beings stage a rebellion because they desire to call the shots of their lives 00:06:57.719 --> 00:07:00.560 to be gods rather than to worship God. 00:07:01.159 --> 00:07:03.600 And so because of that, things begin to fall apart. 00:07:03.699 --> 00:07:07.899 And really from chapter 3 to chapter 11, you just see things go from bad to worse. 00:07:09.159 --> 00:07:13.399 And chapter 11, this kind of culminates with the Tower of Babel where human beings say, 00:07:13.399 --> 00:07:18.399 let's cast off God altogether, let's make a great name for ourselves in the world. 00:07:19.979 --> 00:07:22.719 And so at this point, it looks almost hopeless. 00:07:23.699 --> 00:07:30.699 And at the very end, you learn about this kind of family, Abraham's family, and it's no different 00:07:30.699 --> 00:07:31.679 than any other family. 00:07:31.839 --> 00:07:33.719 They're pagan moon worshipers. 00:07:33.720 --> 00:07:40.520 And yet, in chapter 12, God comes to this man named Abram. 00:07:41.500 --> 00:07:43.080 And God comes to this man. 00:07:43.420 --> 00:07:45.580 Why he picked Abram, we will never know. 00:07:46.660 --> 00:07:53.600 But he comes to Abram, and he essentially lays out his plan to save and to restore the world, 00:07:53.680 --> 00:07:55.020 to reverse the brokenness. 00:07:55.400 --> 00:07:56.240 And here's the plan. 00:07:56.320 --> 00:07:57.020 Here's the big plan. 00:07:57.019 --> 00:08:01.599 It's not, I'm going to appear in the sky and everybody's going to see me, and there's going 00:08:01.599 --> 00:08:05.839 to be flames and lights and thunder, and tell everybody to stop doing bad stuff. 00:08:06.819 --> 00:08:10.579 And it's not sending legions of angels to sort of quell the rebellion. 00:08:11.180 --> 00:08:16.519 It's not taking control of human beings' hearts and minds and turning them into automatons 00:08:16.519 --> 00:08:17.439 to do God's will. 00:08:17.639 --> 00:08:18.639 It's none of these things. 00:08:19.419 --> 00:08:21.139 In fact, it's not a power play at all. 00:08:22.139 --> 00:08:23.839 He says, here's my big plan, Abram. 00:08:25.459 --> 00:08:26.799 I'm going to build a family. 00:08:27.019 --> 00:08:30.519 I'm going to make a family in the world. 00:08:31.599 --> 00:08:34.659 He says, I'm going to use your descendants to establish a family. 00:08:35.299 --> 00:08:39.659 And this family, if you can imagine it, Abram, he says in chapter 15, go outside, look at 00:08:39.659 --> 00:08:39.919 the stars. 00:08:40.000 --> 00:08:43.019 This family is going to be as numerous as the stars in the sky. 00:08:43.199 --> 00:08:44.819 It's going to be that big, that vast. 00:08:46.299 --> 00:08:53.139 And through this family, I'm going to one day bless all of the families of the earth. 00:08:53.139 --> 00:08:59.159 And if you know the whole story, you know that Jesus' coming and his death and his resurrection 00:08:59.159 --> 00:09:06.559 and his establishing of the church is the fulfillment or the beginning of the fulfillment of this 00:09:06.559 --> 00:09:06.919 promise. 00:09:06.919 --> 00:09:08.620 So we're a part of this. 00:09:10.120 --> 00:09:12.019 You know, Abram never could have imagined the church. 00:09:12.120 --> 00:09:17.599 He never could have dreamed what God would do, establishing an international church spread 00:09:17.599 --> 00:09:18.819 to the four corners of the globe. 00:09:18.820 --> 00:09:24.360
