us to know in all the world are those truths. 00:06:22.579 --> 00:06:24.759 Luke makes sure that we don't miss either of them. 00:06:24.819 --> 00:06:26.639 That's a big part of this passage. 00:06:27.099 --> 00:06:30.779 That as usual, he is documenting with eyewitnesses. 00:06:31.319 --> 00:06:34.000 This time a wide range of eyewitnesses. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:35.539 Roman centurions. 00:06:36.939 --> 00:06:37.879 Jewish women. 00:06:38.459 --> 00:06:40.819 Crowds from outside Jerusalem. 00:06:41.259 --> 00:06:43.019 A Jewish religious leader. 00:06:43.259 --> 00:06:44.439 Greatly respected. 00:06:45.659 --> 00:06:49.439 They all see and can affirm what happens here. 00:06:51.459 --> 00:06:55.719 It's important to Luke to establish that Jesus really died. 00:06:56.779 --> 00:06:58.740 Because Jesus really died. 00:07:00.779 --> 00:07:03.620 Perhaps that seems normal to us. 00:07:03.620 --> 00:07:08.459 But it wouldn't have earned His followers any points, would it? 00:07:08.540 --> 00:07:11.100 To talk about their leader who had died. 00:07:12.620 --> 00:07:16.980 Certainly would seem easier to promote a powerful, conquering Messiah. 00:07:17.120 --> 00:07:19.680 Because all the people around were looking for one, weren't they? 00:07:19.879 --> 00:07:21.240 They were longing for that. 00:07:21.240 --> 00:07:30.639 As I was reminded recently, Islam teaches that part of Jesus' good name and being a great person is that He never actually died. 00:07:31.040 --> 00:07:34.180 But rather that Allah brought Jesus to Himself. 00:07:34.680 --> 00:07:37.199 That's the way to make someone you respect important, right? 00:07:37.199 --> 00:07:43.620 Unless that's not the way it happened. 00:07:43.620 --> 00:07:47.139 Luke wants the historical truth, remember? 00:07:47.259 --> 00:07:48.620 No matter how hard it is. 00:07:50.079 --> 00:07:53.339 Luke's eyewitnesses walk with Jesus all week. 00:07:53.560 --> 00:07:54.680 And all weekend. 00:07:55.060 --> 00:07:58.379 And follow Him every step of the way to the cross. 00:07:58.800 --> 00:08:00.180 Until His side is pierced. 00:08:00.180 --> 00:08:03.819 His blood and water pour out. 00:08:04.800 --> 00:08:08.060 He's taken, wrapped up, buried in a tomb. 00:08:10.300 --> 00:08:16.360 Hundreds of these witnesses that are in the city this day will, in coming months, 00:08:16.680 --> 00:08:22.100 give their lives for the truth of Jesus' death and resurrection. 00:08:23.079 --> 00:08:25.340 That's how sure they are of what they saw. 00:08:25.340 --> 00:08:29.360 They themselves will die for their belief in that truth. 00:08:29.360 --> 00:08:32.779 Jesus really dies. 00:08:34.980 --> 00:08:36.820 Luke wants us to know that. 00:08:37.120 --> 00:08:45.419 But he also wants us to see a couple of other occurrences around Jesus' death that show us the significance of it. 00:08:45.960 --> 00:08:47.200 Why did He die? 00:08:48.399 --> 00:08:49.580 Why not another way? 00:08:50.460 --> 00:08:53.539 What did Jesus' death accomplish? 00:08:53.539 --> 00:08:59.980 First, notice that Jesus in His death took our judgment. 00:09:01.679 --> 00:09:06.899 We saw last week how Jesus kept speaking of repentance and forgiveness at the cross. 00:09:07.159 --> 00:09:12.959 But now, here Luke highlights the just penalty that our sin deserves. 00:09:12.960 --> 00:09:26.960 Verse 44, it was now about the sixth hour and there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour while the sun's light failed. 00:09:28.960 --> 00:09:31.120 Noon to three o'clock. 00:09:31.759 --> 00:09:32.480 Darkness. 00:09:33.519 --> 00:09:35.040 Not just a cloudy day. 00:09:35.420 --> 00:09:37.440 The sun's light goes out. 00:09:38.080 --> 00:09:39.160 That's amazing. 00:10:00.039 --> 00:10:03.439 We could read about it in many prophets. 00:10:04.159 --> 00:10:05.299 Joel, Zephaniah. 00:10:05.559 --> 00:10:13.039 But this morning, I want to look briefly at Amos chapter 8 where God is speaking of His judgment on His people. 00:10:13.439 --> 00:10:16.000 On the day of the Lord, His coming judgment. 00:10:16.620 --> 00:10:19.099 And I'll just read a couple of the verses that describe it. 00:10:19.419 --> 00:10:21.759 On that day, declares the Lord God, 00:10:22.159 --> 00:10:26.480 I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight. 00:10:26.480 --> 00:10:29.680 I'll turn your feasts into mourning. 00:10:29.800 --> 00:10:31.500 All your songs into lamentation. 00:10:31.759 --> 00:10:34.899 I'll bring sackcloth on every waist and baldness on every head. 00:10:35.120 --> 00:10:38.060 I will make it like the mourning for an only son. 00:10:38.279 --> 00:10:41.440 And the end of it like a bitter day. 00:10:42.920 --> 00:10:44.240 A day of mourning. 00:10:45.820 --> 00:10:48.060 Like mourning for an only son. 00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:51.300 Interesting that God would cast it in those terms, isn't it? 00:10:51.299 --> 00:10:54.139 The darkness that comes. 00:10:54.259 --> 00:10:57.019 A picture of the judgment of God. 00:10:57.240 --> 00:11:00.699 Not merely on those who are killing His son. 00:11:01.019 --> 00:11:02.439 But on sin. 00:11:05.439 --> 00:11:08.339 See, it's the sin of God's creatures. 00:11:08.620 --> 00:11:13.679 Our rebellion against Him in our thoughts, words, attitudes, actions. 00:11:13.939 --> 00:11:16.799 That incites His just wrath, isn't it? 00:11:16.799 --> 00:11:22.039 Forgiveness that we've been talking about is needed at the cross 00:11:22.039 --> 00:11:27.399 because a holy God has been repeatedly and willfully turned against. 00:11:27.879 --> 00:11:32.699 People, you and me included, have decided to pursue our own ways. 00:11:33.659 --> 00:11:37.599 To find life and fulfillment and things and people other than God. 00:11:38.979 --> 00:11:42.120 And the Bible tells us the wages of that sin is death. 00:11:42.120 --> 00:11:44.320 That's what our sin deserves. 00:11:44.440 --> 00:11:47.940 The wrath and curse of God forever. 00:11:49.480 --> 00:11:55.940 God tells us Himself He will not and cannot overlook sin and clear guilty people. 00:11:56.500 --> 00:11:57.460 He's too righteous. 00:11:58.500 --> 00:12:02.580 Too good of a judge to declare guilty people innocent, isn't He? 00:12:03.100 --> 00:12:04.120 He won't do it. 00:12:04.740 --> 00:12:08.360 So sin must be punished. 00:12:08.360 --> 00:12:13.860 And the darkness moves in. 00:12:14.120 --> 00:12:18.940 You can feel that sin must be punished. 00:12:19.080 --> 00:12:21.480 This day will not be the only day, 00:12:22.120 --> 00:12:27.820 but one particular glimpse of God's judgment breaking into human history. 00:12:29.759 --> 00:12:33.240 See, when God's just judgment on your sin shows up, getting me back. 00:12:52.159 --> 00:12:53.879 Giving me what I deserved. 00:12:56.259 --> 00:12:56.859 Friends, 00:12:57.779 --> 00:13:02.919 do we not see the true awfulness of our sin? 00:13:04.120
