Christians our entire lives. 00:00:46.020 --> 00:00:49.359 He has something to say to those of us who might say that we're not Christians, 00:00:49.520 --> 00:00:52.640 that we have questions or doubts or objections to Christianity. 00:00:52.640 --> 00:00:58.539 But God's word is powerful enough and good enough that he's willing to speak to us wherever we're at. 00:00:59.539 --> 00:01:03.659 If you remember, we are looking at the book of Philippians, and the book of Philippians is a letter. 00:01:04.319 --> 00:01:07.900 It's a letter that's written to a church that's very much like our church. 00:01:08.780 --> 00:01:11.980 That church is in a city very much like our city. 00:01:12.079 --> 00:01:15.019 Remember, we've been talking about the fact that this is a military city. 00:01:15.140 --> 00:01:17.140 It has a military history. 00:01:17.519 --> 00:01:20.019 It has special privileges in the province of Macedonia. 00:01:20.019 --> 00:01:25.780 And so people who are citizens, people who have served with Rome are given special privileges, special benefits. 00:01:26.420 --> 00:01:28.019 They have reduced taxes. 00:01:28.859 --> 00:01:32.079 They take pride in the fact that they belong to the Roman Empire. 00:01:33.219 --> 00:01:37.359 And so in a world that, in a city that takes pride in its Roman citizenship, 00:01:37.539 --> 00:01:44.359 we saw last week that Paul encourages his readers instead to take pride in their citizenship in the city of heaven, 00:01:44.640 --> 00:01:46.259 that they belong to God. 00:01:46.260 --> 00:01:51.780 And this is a book overall in the big picture about partnership in the gospel. 00:01:52.660 --> 00:01:56.240 So it's about our partnership together, that we are working side by side, 00:01:56.340 --> 00:01:58.000 that we have the same goal. 00:01:58.300 --> 00:02:00.260 We're seeking the same treasure together. 00:02:00.840 --> 00:02:04.620 And it's also about the gospel, that our treasure is the news about Jesus. 00:02:05.320 --> 00:02:08.420 It's the story of his life, but also the announcement, the news, 00:02:08.480 --> 00:02:13.180 that his life and his death and his resurrection did what we could not do. 00:02:13.180 --> 00:02:19.140 It took the punishment that we deserve for our sins and gave us the righteousness that Christ earned through his obedience. 00:02:20.340 --> 00:02:23.540 And so we're both working together and we're with the gospel, 00:02:23.620 --> 00:02:25.560 that we can't take those things and separate them. 00:02:26.520 --> 00:02:29.520 Last week we asked the question of how we can stand together, 00:02:29.640 --> 00:02:33.780 how we can have a partnership in the gospel together when we face opposition. 00:02:33.780 --> 00:02:41.199 And we saw that we can either go on a mission with each other or we can go on a mission against each other. 00:02:41.840 --> 00:02:43.180 That those are our two options. 00:02:43.319 --> 00:02:48.580 And Paul encourages and exhorts the people in Philippi to strive side by side for the gospel. 00:02:49.219 --> 00:02:52.240 That they have to pursue unity together and with one another. 00:02:53.360 --> 00:02:55.920 And so last week we saw the why. 00:02:55.919 --> 00:03:02.939 We saw that God builds us up, he confirms our faith and that we belong to him when we stand together. 00:03:03.459 --> 00:03:05.500 And this week we're going to see the how. 00:03:06.560 --> 00:03:09.819 How is it that we're able to strive side by side? 00:03:10.839 --> 00:03:16.739 It is one thing to join a church and another to get along with the people in it. 00:03:16.740 --> 00:03:21.640 It's one thing to take vows for better or for worse. 00:03:22.900 --> 00:03:26.320 And another to figure out how to actually live with your spouse. 00:03:27.760 --> 00:03:31.060 It's one thing to be excited about the school year that just started. 00:03:32.240 --> 00:03:35.640 And another to actually get along with the classmates around you. 00:03:37.680 --> 00:03:43.080 It's one thing to talk about people from both sides of the aisle listening to each other. 00:03:43.140 --> 00:03:44.740 And it's another thing to do it. 00:03:44.740 --> 00:03:47.500 And so our big question is this. 00:03:47.580 --> 00:03:49.340 How do we actually work together? 00:03:50.260 --> 00:03:51.560 What is it that we actually do? 00:03:51.600 --> 00:03:54.620 Because we know that it's easy to say and hard to do. 00:03:55.480 --> 00:03:56.980 It's something that we wish for. 00:03:57.080 --> 00:04:02.660 We know that there's few things in this life more satisfying than working with a team, with a group, towards a common goal. 00:04:03.160 --> 00:04:08.000 And yet if we've lived in this life for more than a few minutes, we know that there's also nothing that's more difficult. 00:04:09.400 --> 00:04:12.920 And so Paul is going to address that very thing in his letter to the Philippians today. 00:04:12.919 --> 00:04:16.379 We're in Philippians chapter 2, starting at the very beginning. 00:04:16.539 --> 00:04:18.000 We're going to start in verse 1. 00:04:19.019 --> 00:04:21.560 And remember that this letter is God's word. 00:04:22.879 --> 00:04:27.939 And God tells us that his word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold. 00:04:29.199 --> 00:04:30.699 And that it is sweeter than honey. 00:04:31.680 --> 00:04:34.159 Even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb. 00:04:35.199 --> 00:04:37.819 And so we're going to read it starting in verse 1 of chapter 2. 00:04:37.939 --> 00:04:38.779 Please read with me. 00:04:38.779 --> 00:04:51.939 So, if there is any encouragement in Christ, any comfort from love, any participation in the Spirit, any affection and sympathy, 00:04:52.939 --> 00:04:59.819 complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind. 00:05:00.359 --> 00:05:00.919 Verse 3. 00:05:00.920 --> 00:05:04.439 Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit. 00:05:05.379 --> portion of God's word. 00:06:08.959 --> 00:06:10.120 Dear Father in heaven, 00:06:11.319 --> 00:06:13.799 we confess as we read your word 00:06:13.799 --> 00:06:18.740 that it's impossible for us to hear from you unless you speak. 00:06:20.359 --> 00:06:26.759 And even if you speak, it's impossible for us to understand unless you send your spirit to work in our minds and our hearts. 00:06:27.839 --> 00:06:31.579 And so we ask simply that this morning, that you would send your Holy Spirit to us. 00:06:32.379 --> 00:06:34.979 That you would take what's dead in us and make it alive. 00:06:36.099 --> 00:06:39.219 That you would take what we can't understand and make it clear. 00:06:39.220 --> 00:06:44.900 And most of all, that you would take a spotlight and that you would put it on Jesus name of your son. 00:06:55.720 --> 00:06:55.960 Amen. 00:06:55.959 --> 00:07:02.779 Paul begins this section essentially by asking a question. 00:07:04.579 --> 00:07:08.579 Have you experienced anything good from the gospel? 00:07:09.740 --> 00:07:12.019 Verse 1, is there any encouragement in Christ? 00:07:13.740 --> 00:07:16.179 Do you take any encouragement from the fact that 00:07:16.179 --> 00:07:21.139 Jesus' death has paid for your sins and his life is credited to you? 00:07:21.839 --> 00:07:23.399 Does the gospel mean anything to you? 00:07:24.439 --> 00:07:26.199 But remember, this isn't just about the gospel. 00:07:26.379 --> 00:07:27.099 It's about the partnership. 00:07:27.319 --> 00:07:30.139 And so we also ask, does the partnership mean anything to you? 00:07:30.800 --> 00:07:32.459 Do you have any comfort from love? 00:07:33.599 --> 00:07:35.360 Any participation in the spirit? 00:07:35.919 --> 00:07:42.039 In other words, have you experienced even the smallest benefit from partnership in the gospel? 00:07:42.759 --> 00:07:47.879 Have you been able to catch the smallest glimpse, to see the smallest part of it, just a sliver of light? 00:07:47.879 --> 00:07:50.439 Have you been able to see even only a little bit? 00:07:52.240 --> 00:07:56.420 Have you been able to experience the love that comes from being part of this partnership? 00:07:57.420 --> 00:07:59.219 Has it affected you in any way? 00:07:59.300 --> 00:08:01.040 Has it piqued your curiosity in any way? 00:08:01.959 --> 00:08:06.740 If it has touched you in anything, in any part of your life, 00:08:07.240 --> 00:08:09.800 if you've been a part of this community, 00:08:10.659 --> 00:08:12.579 then he asks them to make it even more. 00:08:12.579 --> 00:08:16.339 Because he's appealing not just to their relationship with God, 00:08:16.399 --> 00:08:19.159 but also to their relationship with him and with others. 00:08:19.859 --> 00:08:22.039 Because in Paul's mind, this partnership is so important. 00:08:22.180 --> 00:08:23.620 And so that's why he says in verse 2, 00:08:23.719 --> 00:08:25.339 to complete my joy. 00:08:27.279 --> 00:08:30.799 Not only have you experienced something from your relationship with Christ, 00:08:30.879 --> 00:08:33.620 but have you experienced something with your relationship with me, Paul? 00:08:34.319 --> 00:08:37.480 He's appealing to the fact that he knows this church personally. 00:08:37.480 --> 00:08:41.039 It was 10 years ago that he was with them, 00:08:41.100 --> 00:08:43.039 and he was in prison for the sake of the gospel. 00:08:44.180 --> 00:08:46.899 And so he appeals to them like a father to his children. 00:08:49.600 --> 00:08:51.920 Have you experienced anything good in this family? 00:08:52.879 --> 00:08:54.159 Has it been a blessing to you? 00:08:54.220 --> 00:08:55.440 Do you want to stay in? 00:08:56.659 --> 00:08:58.139 Do you call yourself a Christian? 00:08:59.560 --> 00:09:01.300 Well, then you just have one choice. 00:09:02.600 --> 00:09:03.480 Have the same love. 00:09:03.580 --> 00:09:05.720 Be in full accord and of one mind. 00:09:05.720 --> 00:09:07.139 Verse 3. 00:09:07.740 --> 00:09:10.040 begin to see the answer to our question. 00:09:17.840 --> 00:09:20.019 How is it that we can actually work together? 00:09:20.860 --> 00:09:24.120 What is it that we actually do that allows us to 00:09:30.440 --> 00:09:32.980 but we wouldn't have any definition of humility. 00:09:33.160 --> 00:09:35.139 Thankfully, Paul's a precise thinker. 00:09:35.139 --> 00:09:36.159 He's a precise writer. 00:09:36.699 --> 00:09:40.000 And so he doesn't leave us to wonder what this kind of humility is. 00:09:40.039 --> 00:09:40.779 He's very clear. 00:09:42.779 --> 00:09:46.000 Humility here is the opposite of selfish ambition or conceit. 00:09:47.100 --> 00:09:48.600 And so we can do one of two things. 00:09:48.699 --> 00:09:52.819 We can either pursue things that make us look good or feel good, 00:09:52.879 --> 00:09:56.679 or we can pursue things that make other people, 00:09:57.679 --> 00:09:59.939 that go after other people's interests. 00:09:59.940 --> 00:10:03.120 We can either do things that make people look, 00:10:03.240 --> 00:10:04.940 ourselves look good or feel good. 00:10:05.000 --> 00:10:06.940 That's the conceit or the pride. 00:10:08.580 --> 00:10:10.660 Or we can focus on what's good for others. 00:10:11.700 --> 00:10:14.140 That's the first part of humility that he gives us, 00:10:14.180 --> 00:10:15.120 but that's not the end of it. 00:10:16.580 --> 00:10:17.420 Verse 4, he says, 00:10:17.419 --> 00:10:24.879 Now, I'm not going to take credit for this definition. 00:10:25.059 --> 00:10:26.179 I'm not sure where it comes from, 00:10:26.219 --> 00:10:27.759 but it's a common definition of humility, 00:10:27.919 --> 00:10:28.579 and it's simply this. 00:10:28.659 --> 00:10:31.839 Humility is not thinking less of yourself, 00:10:32.559 --> 00:10:35.299 but thinking of yourself less. 00:10:35.299 --> 00:10:39.259 It's not thinking less of yourself, 00:10:39.779 --> 00:10:42.919 but thinking of yourself less. 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:45.899 In other words, the focus of your mind, 00:10:46.000 --> 00:10:48.939 the focus of your energy and your thoughts is on other people. 00:10:50.219 --> 00:10:51.620 It's on their needs. 00:10:51.899 --> 00:10:53.139 It's on their concerns, 00:10:53.500 --> 00:10:57.459 rather than on what makes you look good and feel good. 00:10:58.579 --> 00:11:02.500 That is Paul's answer here to how this partnership is going to work. 00:11:02.500 --> 00:11:05.440 What is going to have to happen 00:11:05.440 --> 00:11:08.759 if these Christians in Philippi 00:11:08.759 --> 00:11:11.460 are going to be able to achieve what we talked about last week? 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:15.360 If they're going to be able to actually continue striving side by side 00:11:15.360 --> 00:11:16.340 for the sake of the gospel? 00:11:16.899 --> 00:11:18.779 If they're going to have any humility, 00:11:19.120 --> 00:11:21.220 any partnership, any unity, 00:11:21.659 --> 00:11:22.840 then the answer is humility. 00:11:25.000 --> 00:11:26.820 Now, don't hear what I'm not saying here. 00:11:27.840 --> 00:11:31.080 Paul is not saying that you should allow people to abuse you. 00:11:32.500 --> 00:11:36.179 He is not saying that you should live as a doormat. 00:11:37.659 --> 00:11:41.500 Remember, he's writing to a church that's in the middle of conflict. 00:11:42.440 --> 00:11:44.759 We are going to find out in chapter 4 00:11:44.759 --> 00:11:46.279 that there are people in the church 00:11:46.279 --> 00:11:48.399 that cannot figure out how to get along. 00:11:50.000 --> 00:11:52.080 And so he's saying 00:12:53.340 of people who are not born in the U.S. 00:12:55.120 --> 00:12:57.360 It's husbands who are making it their job 00:12:57.360 --> 00:12:58.960 to research and look into 00:12:58.960 --> there's a question challenge here for us. 00:13:08.500 --> 00:13:10.559 Because Paul is saying 00:13:10.559 --> 00:13:11.419 that the answer 00:13:11.419 --> 00:13:13.639 to our disunity in the church, 00:13:14.000 --> 00:13:15.019 our answer to conflict, 00:13:15.159 --> 00:13:16.240 is to become researchers. 00:13:17.659 --> 00:13:19.039 To become researchers 00:13:19.039 --> 00:13:21.139 about other people in the church. 00:13:22.879 --> 00:13:24.360 Our conflict in the situations 00:13:24.360 --> 00:13:25.539 that we find ourselves in, 00:13:25.620 --> 00:13:27.600 if we're not able ask a question. 00:15:07.139 --> 00:15:09.179 What we see here in Philippians 2 00:15:09.179 --> 00:15:11.079 is that if we want to have unity 00:15:11.079 --> 00:15:11.699 in the church, 00:15:12.459 --> 00:15:14.480 we have to be question people, 00:15:15.079 --> 00:15:16.639 not answer people. 00:15:18.679 --> 00:15:20.079 We have to be question people, 00:15:20.459 --> 00:15:21.839 not answer people. 00:15:22.740 --> 00:15:24.059 And question people specifically 00:15:24.059 --> 00:15:25.559 about the needs and concerns 00:15:25.559 --> 00:15:26.639 of other people. 00:15:27.719 -->
