I'm Pastor Patrick Daly and each week I balance the grace and love of Jesus Christ with the truth of the Word of God. 00:00:17.000 --> 00:00:23.000 Today, you'll be hearing week 5 of our sermon series through the book of Revelation. 00:00:23.000 --> 00:00:31.000 We are looking at Revelation 2, verses 8-11, which is Christ's letter to the church in Smyrna. 00:00:31.000 --> 00:00:35.000 Now, here's something powerful to note before you listen. 00:00:35.000 --> 00:00:45.000 This is one of only two churches in Revelation that receives no correction or rebuke from Christ, only commendation and encouragement. 00:00:45.000 --> 00:00:52.000 Smyrna was the suffering church. It was facing persecution. It was the struggling church. 00:00:52.000 --> 00:01:00.000 They were physically poor. They were facing slander and that persecution, yet Jesus calls them spiritually rich. 00:01:00.000 --> 00:01:06.000 What a reminder for us or for even if we're in a church that is facing a trial. 00:01:06.000 --> 00:01:14.000 Our struggles are not wasted. For in Christ, we are seen, we are sustained, and we are loved by Christ. 00:01:14.000 --> 00:01:20.000 As you listen today, I want you to pay attention to how Christ is identifying himself. 00:01:20.000 --> 00:01:28.000 He is calling himself the first and the last, which is the Alpha and the Omega, who died and came to life. 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:36.000 This is speaking of the resurrection. Christ is showing his authority over time, life, and death. 00:01:36.000 --> 00:01:46.000 I also want you to take note that trials have a limit, just like the ten days that are mentioned to the church in Smyrna, but also in Daniel chapter 1. 00:01:46.000 --> 00:01:58.000 Let us trust in the Lord Jesus Christ who conquered death. Let us stand firm during the spiritual battle, and let us endure to the end, where we will receive the crown of life. 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:06.000 Let us now listen together to today's message, Faithful unto death, rich in Christ. 00:02:06.000 --> 00:02:15.000 Well, good morning, everyone. It's great to be here as we are continuing through our series through the book of Revelation. 00:02:15.000 --> 00:02:23.000 This last week, we began, we started with these seven churches that are in Revelation. 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:31.000 And what's important as we're going through these seven churches is that not only are these historical churches, 00:02:31.000 --> 00:02:36.000 but these are situations that, well, for many of us, we may identify. 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:44.000 We may have been through in a church setting, maybe not the bad ones, but maybe a good one, or maybe you have been in a situation. 00:02:44.000 --> 00:02:50.000 Every church is different. Every church has its strengths and its weaknesses. 00:02:50.000 --> 00:03:00.000 And what's important for all of us is to realize that as the body of Christ, as a church, an imperfect church at that, 00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:08.000 that we seek the living God. We learn to love like Jesus has, how he has loved us. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:14.000 And we search the scriptures. We learn about the truth of the word of God. 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:24.000 And as we're going to go through, we learned this last week about this situation where this church had lost its first love. 00:03:24.000 --> 00:03:33.000 What a tragedy that must be to be so focused in the pursuit of truth and losing the love of Christ. 00:03:33.000 --> 00:03:39.000 And I pray that that's never the case for this church or really any church in that. 00:03:39.000 --> 00:03:51.000 And should that ever happen, I pray that we may change our mind, that we may repent and come back to the love of Christ, loving God and loving others. 00:03:51.000 --> 00:03:55.000 This week, we're going over the church in Smyrna. 00:03:55.000 --> 00:04:01.000 I'd like for us to turn our Bibles into Revelation chapter two, verses eight through 11. 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:06.000 And there's something as we're turning into there in your ESVP Bibles. 00:04:06.000 --> 00:04:15.000 It's going to be in page 1219 or your Bible of choice, Revelation two, verses eight through 11. 00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:24.000 And as we're turning there, I want you to pay attention to see that there's not a lot of verses on this church. 00:04:26.000 --> 00:04:28.000 There's not a lot about it. 00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:41.000 And in fact, here is a scenario where this is known as the struggling or the suffering church, a church that is going through tribulation. 00:04:41.000 --> 00:04:51.000 And we can think about how in our own lives, our own personal and individual lives, we go through trials and we go through tribulation. 00:04:51.000 --> 00:05:04.000 Well, in churches, unfortunately, there are times where there is persecution or pressure, a trial or a situation that a church may go through. 00:05:04.000 --> 00:05:07.000 And we'll see here. 00:05:07.000 --> 00:05:11.000 What does Christ say to this church in Smyrna? 00:05:11.000 --> 00:05:13.000 Are we all there, church? 00:05:13.000 --> 00:05:17.000 So let's read to the church in Smyrna. 00:05:17.000 --> 00:05:19.000 Let's read this together. 00:05:19.000 --> 00:05:21.000 Verse eight. 00:05:21.000 --> 00:05:31.000 And to the angel of the church in Smyrna, write the words of the first and the last who died and came to life. 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:32.000 Verse nine. 00:05:32.000 --> 00:05:44.000 I know your tribulation and your poverty, but you are rich and the slander of those who say that they are Jews and are not, but are a what church? 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:46.000 A synagogue of Satan. 00:05:46.000 --> 00:05:49.000 Do not fear what you are about to suffer. 00:05:49.000 --> 00:05:56.000 Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison that you may be tested. 00:05:56.000 --> 00:05:58.000 And for how many days? 00:05:58.000 --> 00:05:59.000 Ten days. 00:05:59.000 --> 00:06:01.000 You will have tribulation. 00:06:01.000 --> 00:06:03.000 Be faithful unto death. 00:06:03.000 --> 00:06:07.000 And I will give you the crown of life. 00:06:07.000 --> 00:06:13.000 He who has an ear, let him hear what the spirit says to the churches. 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:18.000 The one who conquers will not be hurt by the second death. 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:30.000 Now, last week when we looked at Ephesus, we had all these good things and we had the famous, but, or yet I have this against you. 00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:32.000 And do we see that in here? 00:06:32.000 --> 00:06:33.000 We don't. 00:06:33.000 --> 00:06:34.000 We don't. 00:06:34.000 --> 00:06:42.000 So this is one of the few times here that we see that there is no correction or rebuking as it were. 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:50.000 In fact, here we are seeing that, you know, Christ is identifying himself as the first and the last. 00:06:50.000 --> 00:06:53.000 The one who died and came to life, right? 00:06:53.000 --> 00:06:57.000 Christ is establishing his authority. 00:06:57.000 --> 00:07:02.000 We think of Jesus Christ being the Alpha and the Omega. 00:07:02.000 --> 00:07:07.000 We can think of the triune God being everlasting to everlasting. 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:10.000 Being the same yesterday, today, and forever. 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:16.000 It's just one of the many words to describe the essence of our Lord and our God. 00:07:16.000 --> 00:07:17.000 God. 00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:33.000 It's not only is it describing our triune God and describing Jesus Christ as the first and the last talking about time, but also talking about the one who died and came to life. 00:07:33.000 --> 00:07:35.000 Speaking of the resurrection. 00:07:35.000 --> 00:07:40.000 Speaking of the power that our Lord and our God has over death. 00:07:40.000 --> 00:07:53.000 And that is just that verse in of itself should give us comfort that God is there with us in all of time and is the one who has conquered death. 00:07:53.000 --> 00:07:56.000 The one who can provide everlasting life. 00:07:56.000 --> 00:07:59.000 And so you'll notice that. 00:07:59.000 --> 00:08:05.000 Very similar as it is mentioned, as it mentions in the church of Ephesus. 00:08:05.000 --> 00:08:08.000 And so. 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:14.000 Again, this is a struggling and suffering church, and we see why here. 00:08:14.000 --> 00:08:21.000 That the words of Christ is saying, I know your tribulation. 00:08:21.000 --> 00:08:23.000 And your poverty. 00:08:23.000 --> 00:08:26.000 But yet you are rich. 00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:28.000 Isn't that interesting? 00:08:28.000 --> 00:08:35.000 We find that this church was one that was facing pressure. 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:38.000 One that was facing attacks. 00:08:38.000 --> 00:08:44.000 Not just spiritual attacks, but also slanderous words. 00:08:44.000 --> 00:08:47.000 So much so that it was affecting. 00:08:47.000 --> 00:08:55.000 Thinking about a church that is physically poor, but yet spiritually rich. 00:08:55.000 --> 00:08:59.000 You know, years ago, I knew of a. 00:08:59.000 --> 00:09:00.000 My. 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:01.000 You can ask my wife as well. 00:09:01.000 --> 00:09:03.000 I knew of a church that. 00:09:03.000 --> 00:09:07.000 When my wife and I, when we lived in California, sometimes we'd go visit some churches. 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:18.000 We'd go travel and we found this one church that was such a, a small congregation. 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:24.000 And they were talking about in their announcements how they were really struggling to pay the bills. 00:09:24.000 --> 00:09:29.000 And they were saying how the roof was leaking and the air conditioning was, was going out. 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:30.000 And mind you, it was summer. 00:09:30.000 --> 00:09:32.000 It was pretty hot in there. 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:34.000 But yet they were so faithful. 00:09:34.000 --> 00:09:39.000 They were kind of saying, you know, we don't have all the money, but we're going to keep showing up. 00:09:39.000 --> 00:09:42.000 And that's what we're going to do. 00:09:42.000 --> 00:09:48.000 And the heart in that is something that's really wonderful to see. 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:56.000 That regardless of this specific church or even in the, what we're talking about with Smyrna. 00:09:56.000 --> 00:09:59.000 A church that is struggling. 00:09:59.000 --> 00:10:02.000 But yet, despite that struggle. 00:10:02.000 --> 00:10:04.000 They are blessed. 00:10:04.000 --> 00:10:07.000 They are rich in Christ. 00:10:07.000 --> 00:10:14.000 And not only can we see that within churches, but we can even think of that for our, us as individuals. 00:10:14.000 --> 00:10:20.000 You may know of someone, or you may identify with someone who struggles. 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:23.000 It doesn't have to necessarily be finances. 00:10:23.000 --> 00:10:29.000 They may be struggling by spiritual warfare or spiritual attacks or slander. 00:10:29.000 --> 00:10:35.000 But yet, despite that kind of pressure, that kind of trial or tribulation. 00:10:35.000 --> 00:10:38.000 It's talking about being rich in Christ. 00:10:38.000 --> 00:10:42.000 And what a comforting reminder we can think of. 00:10:42.000 --> 00:10:44.000 That when we face pressure. 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:49.000 When we face any sort of accusations, slander, attack, whatever. 00:10:49.000 --> 00:10:54.000 I mean, the list of the evil things that people can do is endless, right? 00:10:54.000 --> 00:10:56.000 But yet, despite that. 00:10:56.000 --> 00:10:59.000 Knowing that God is there with us. 00:10:59.000 --> 00:11:02.000 And he's not going to abandon us. 00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:05.000 And that all of that suffering and struggling. 00:11:05.000 --> 00:11:08.000 It's not for nothing. 00:11:08.000 --> 00:11:11.000 It's going to count in the eyes of God. 00:11:11.000 --> 00:11:16.000 And that's something that is really remarkable. 00:11:16.000 --> 00:11:19.000 So, tribulation, this pressure. 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:30.000 And we find in scripture, we're not going to turn there, but this pattern actually shows up in 2 Corinthians 8, verses 2 and verse 9. 00:11:30.000 --> 00:11:33.000 This idea of a church. 00:11:33.000 --> 00:11:39.000 It talks about the Macedonian churches that were physically poor or they were struggling. 00:11:39.000 --> 00:11:41.000 And yet, they were spiritually rich. 00:11:41.000 --> 00:11:46.000 And that's something that is, we can see as an ongoing pattern in here. 00:11:46.000 --> 00:11:49.000 And so, going back to the verse here. 00:11:49.000 --> 00:11:56.000 And the slander of those that say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan. 00:11:56.000 --> 00:12:00.000 Now, that is some harsh language here, right? 00:12:00.000 --> 00:12:02.000 We'll get to there. 00:12:02.000 --> 00:12:04.000 So, what's happening here. 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:07.000 You have slander. 00:12:07.000 --> 00:12:09.000 Words that are being spoken. 00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:15.000 People that are opposing this church to the point that they are struggling. 00:12:15.000 --> 00:12:20.000 And that is a reality. 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:23.000 Unfortunately, that can happen. 00:12:23.000 --> 00:12:30.000 Where people rise up against you personally or even the local church. 00:12:30.000 --> 00:12:35.000 What a heartbreak that is when that happens. 00:12:35.000 --> 00:12:42.000 When it does happen, we lean into our faith in Christ. 00:12:42.000 --> 00:12:48.000 Knowing that a time of testing or a time of trial, it will be limited. 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:50.000 It won't be forever. 00:12:50.000 --> 00:12:54.000 And so, the slander of those and the synagogue of Satan. 00:12:54.000 --> 00:12:57.000 You read that and you think, well, what in the world is going on? 00:12:57.000 --> 00:13:05.000 Is there a literal synagogue that's happening and there's these Satanists that are coming together and worshiping the devil? 00:13:05.000 --> 00:13:06.000 Not necessarily. 00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:09.000 What it's talking about is a assembly. 00:13:09.000 --> 00:13:17.000 A group of people that are gathering together and they are plotting and scheming against this church. 00:13:17.000 --> 00:13:23.000 You want to talk about spiritual warfare or the attacks of the enemy? 00:13:23.000 --> 00:13:34.000 That is a very real description of people that rise up and try to see to it that they can destroy the church or destroy people. 00:13:34.000 --> 00:13:35.000 It's ungodly. 00:13:35.000 --> 00:13:40.000 And what we see in here is that it's being recognized. 00:13:40.000 --> 00:13:42.000 It's being recognized. 00:13:42.000 --> 00:13:46.000 And only twice is this language used in all of Scripture. 00:13:46.000 --> 00:13:54.000 This time it's being used and Christ is saying, look, this is happening and it's not going to happen forever. 00:13:54.000 --> 00:14:01.000 Later on, if you turn your Bibles into real briefly, the church in Philadelphia. 00:14:01.000 --> 00:14:06.000 Same thing that's happening, but I don't want to go too far ahead. 00:14:06.000 --> 00:14:10.000 We'll get into that in a couple weeks time here. 00:14:10.000 --> 00:14:14.000 And so, only twice that happens. 00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:21.000 An assembly of people who were against this church and or against the church in Smyrna. 00:14:21.000 --> 00:14:24.000 We can think of that. 00:14:24.000 --> 00:14:30.000 And these people were aligned with the devil. 00:14:30.000 --> 00:14:34.000 They were aligned with the adversary or the accuser. 00:14:34.000 --> 00:14:41.000 Banning together and doing everything within their power to go against the church. 00:14:41.000 --> 00:14:45.000 It's some easy reading, isn't it? 00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:47.000 This is heavier stuff. 00:14:47.000 --> 00:14:58.000 And it's something that we can see not only historically, but some churches that have gone through such kind of pressure. 00:14:58.000 --> 00:15:01.000 We go into verse 10 then. 00:15:01.000 --> 00:15:04.000 And what does Christ say here? 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:11.000 He says the three words that have such weight and are such throughout Scripture. 00:15:11.000 --> 00:15:13.000 Do not fear. 00:15:13.000 --> 00:15:16.000 Much like many times in the Bible, it says to do not be afraid. 00:15:16.000 --> 00:15:19.000 Well, that's easier said than done, isn't it? 00:15:19.000 --> 00:15:21.000 Especially when you're in that situation. 00:15:21.000 --> 00:15:25.000 But he's saying, do not fear what you are about to suffer. 00:15:25.000 --> 00:15:27.000 You mean there's more to this? 00:15:27.000 --> 00:15:32.000 That's hard. 00:15:32.000 --> 00:15:38.000 Behold, the devil is about to throw some of you into prison. 00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:40.000 That you may be tested for 10 days. 00:15:40.000 --> 00:15:42.000 You will have tribulation. 00:15:42.000 --> 00:15:44.000 So we know the devil as in the adversary. 00:15:44.000 --> 00:15:49.000 Now, when we read this, are we talking literally the devil is coming? 00:15:49.000 --> 00:15:50.000 Not necessarily. 00:15:50.000 --> 00:15:58.000 We know that when we talk about the spiritual guidance, you can be led by the Holy Spirit. 00:15:58.000 --> 00:16:01.000 You can be led by the demonic. 00:16:01.000 --> 00:16:03.000 Led by the devil. 00:16:03.000 --> 00:16:06.000 Led by those that have hardened hearts. 00:16:06.000 --> 00:16:09.000 Evil intent to go against. 00:16:09.000 --> 00:16:16.000 See, we think of this constant battle between good and evil. 00:16:16.000 --> 00:16:21.000 And the beautiful thing for us as Christians is to recognize we're on the winning team. 00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:26.000 It's for us to recognize that there is victory in Jesus. 00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:33.000 That we were once all in darkness and we come to the light of Christ, the love of Christ, the truth of Christ. 00:16:33.000 --> 00:16:41.000 Knowing that even though here on this earth, there may very well be situations, trials and tribulations that you go through. 00:16:41.000 --> 00:16:46.000 But the Lord's going to be there with you every step of the way. 00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:52.000 And so we find I want us to turn real quick. 00:16:52.000 --> 00:16:58.000 You'll see on there's a slide there for Daniel. 00:16:58.000 --> 00:17:02.000 This is the last time you turn to Daniel in Scripture. 00:17:02.000 --> 00:17:03.000 Don't answer that. 00:17:03.000 --> 00:17:05.000 Let's turn to the book of Daniel. 00:17:05.000 --> 00:17:13.000 I want to show you something here because it's connected about why in Revelation it's talking about being in prison for 10 days. 00:17:13.000 --> 00:17:15.000 What in the world's going on there? 00:17:16.000 --> 00:17:22.000 We actually see that there's significance and another time in Scripture where this happens. 00:17:22.000 --> 00:17:24.000 So just Daniel chapter one. 00:17:24.000 --> 00:17:31.000 We won't go through the whole thing, but just verses eight through. 00:17:31.000 --> 00:17:34.000 They'll just be bits and pieces here. Right. 00:17:34.000 --> 00:17:39.000 So Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's food. Right. 00:17:39.000 --> 00:17:41.000 So he's talking about that. 00:17:41.000 --> 00:17:42.000 Verse nine. 00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:46.000 God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs. Right. 00:17:46.000 --> 00:17:47.000 So it's going on. 00:17:47.000 --> 00:17:48.000 Verse 10. 00:17:48.000 --> 00:17:51.000 The chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel, I fear the Lord. 00:17:51.000 --> 00:17:55.000 And he's talking about the food. 00:17:55.000 --> 00:17:59.000 And then in verse 11, Daniel said to the steward. 00:17:59.000 --> 00:18:01.000 We go into verse 12. 00:18:01.000 --> 00:18:05.000 Test your servants for 10 days. 00:18:05.000 --> 00:18:09.000 Let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink. 00:18:09.000 --> 00:18:14.000 Then our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king's food will be observed by you. 00:18:14.000 --> 00:18:17.000 So it's talking about a testing that's happened. 00:18:17.000 --> 00:18:18.000 Very similar language in here. 00:18:18.000 --> 00:18:19.000 So verse 14. 00:18:19.000 --> 00:18:22.000 He listened to them in this matter and tested them for 10 days. 00:18:22.000 --> 00:18:25.000 And at the end of the 10 days, they were better in appearance. Right. 00:18:25.000 --> 00:18:29.000 And it's going on about just this evaluation that's happening. 00:18:29.000 --> 00:18:30.000 Very similar. 00:18:30.000 --> 00:18:33.000 When we're talking about the testing. 00:18:33.000 --> 00:18:36.000 Trials and in tribulation. 00:18:36.000 --> 00:18:38.000 And so. 00:18:38.000 --> 00:18:41.000 Going back to Revelation. 00:18:41.000 --> 00:18:48.000 When we see this significance of 10 days, it's interesting to see where this has happened before. 00:18:48.000 --> 00:18:50.000 A testing such as that. 00:18:50.000 --> 00:18:52.000 For 10 days, you will have some. 00:18:52.000 --> 00:18:54.000 I'm going back to Revelation now. 00:18:54.000 --> 00:18:57.000 You will have tribulation. 00:18:57.000 --> 00:18:59.000 You'll have that pressure. 00:18:59.000 --> 00:19:02.000 And what's important for us to note is. 00:19:02.000 --> 00:19:04.000 Does it say the tribulation will be forever? 00:19:04.000 --> 00:19:06.000 It doesn't. 00:19:06.000 --> 00:19:09.000 It's saying that there's going to be a cap, as it were. Right. 00:19:09.000 --> 00:19:12.000 There's going to be a limit to such tribulation. 00:19:12.000 --> 00:19:14.000 And so. 00:19:14.000 --> 00:19:20.000 Be faithful unto death and I will give you the crown of life. 00:19:20.000 --> 00:19:24.000 We see that there's this 10 day limit. 00:19:24.000 --> 00:19:28.000 And then being faithful to the Lord. 00:19:28.000 --> 00:19:30.000 Until the end. 00:19:30.000 --> 00:19:32.000 Receiving that crown of life. 00:19:32.000 --> 00:19:34.000 Now, what's. 00:19:34.000 --> 00:19:36.000 Powerful about this is. 00:19:36.000 --> 00:19:38.000 Knowing that. 00:19:38.000 --> 00:19:40.000 In every situation where. 00:19:40.000 --> 00:19:43.000 We are going through. 00:19:43.000 --> 00:19:45.000 Those trials that pressure. 00:19:45.000 --> 00:19:48.000 We're going through sickness or in health. 00:19:48.000 --> 00:19:49.000 Understanding that. 00:19:49.000 --> 00:19:51.000 The Lord sees that. 00:19:51.000 --> 00:19:53.000 And recognizes it. 00:19:53.000 --> 00:19:55.000 Stay true. 00:19:55.000 --> 00:19:57.000 To the Lord. 00:19:57.000 --> 00:19:59.000 Stay rooted in him. 00:19:59.000 --> 00:20:01.000 Remain faithful to him. 00:20:01.000 --> 00:20:04.000 And know that at the end of it all. 00:20:04.000 --> 00:20:07.000 There is blessing that comes from that. 00:20:07.000 --> 00:20:10.000 It's important for us to know that. 00:20:10.000 --> 00:20:13.000 In these kind of situations. 00:20:14.000 --> 00:20:15.000 That God is there. 00:20:16.000 --> 00:20:19.000 That crown of life is the representation of. 00:20:19.000 --> 00:20:21.000 A sense of honor. 00:20:21.000 --> 00:20:22.000 Right. 00:20:22.000 --> 00:20:24.000 It's the call to remain true. 00:20:25.000 --> 00:20:26.000 To Christ. 00:20:26.000 --> 00:20:28.000 And let us remember in Christ. 00:20:28.000 --> 00:20:29.000 We are secure. 00:20:29.000 --> 00:20:31.000 Until the end. 00:20:31.000 --> 00:20:33.000 But we don't give up hope in him. 00:20:33.000
