It was a long hike. 00:00:34.000 --> 00:00:38.000 I knew that along the hike, there would be vending machines 00:00:38.000 --> 00:00:40.000 where I could restock on my water. 00:00:40.000 --> 00:00:44.000 So I packed some water for the day, but not too much, 00:00:44.000 --> 00:00:46.000 because you don't want to have to carry extra weight, 00:00:46.000 --> 00:00:48.000 and I knew that I could restock halfway through. 00:00:48.000 --> 00:00:51.000 I went out on my hike with a friend. 00:00:51.000 --> 00:00:54.000 We start walking. The hike is going really well. 00:00:54.000 --> 00:00:57.000 We come to the vending machines, and they are sold out. 00:00:57.000 --> 00:00:58.000 Uh-oh. 00:00:58.000 --> 00:01:01.000 My water supply is very low. 00:01:01.000 --> 00:01:03.000 We still have a long ways left to hike, 00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:07.000 and I don't know where I am going to be able to get more water now. 00:01:07.000 --> 00:01:09.000 And so we are hiking. 00:01:09.000 --> 00:01:11.000 If you know anything about hiking in Hong Kong, 00:01:11.000 --> 00:01:13.000 the next hill we had to go up was Needle Hill, 00:01:13.000 --> 00:01:17.000 which is named after its shape because it goes up so steep. 00:01:17.000 --> 00:01:19.000 It is basically a staircase, bottom to top. 00:01:19.000 --> 00:01:22.000 And by the top, my water was gone. 00:01:22.000 --> 00:01:25.000 We walked down Needle Hill. 00:01:25.000 --> 00:01:28.000 We walked up the next hill, grassy hill. 00:01:28.000 --> 00:01:30.000 And I was thirsty. 00:01:30.000 --> 00:01:32.000 And I was a little bit nervous, 00:01:32.000 --> 00:01:34.000 because I don't remember a time in my life 00:01:34.000 --> 00:01:37.000 where I have been that thirsty before. 00:01:37.000 --> 00:01:40.000 And I started having these thoughts of, 00:01:40.000 --> 00:01:43.000 I don't know if I am going to be able to finish the hike. 00:01:43.000 --> 00:01:47.000 I think I might pass out and get dehydrated 00:01:47.000 --> 00:01:51.000 if I keep going for too long without more water. 00:01:51.000 --> 00:01:53.000 I thought about, you know, 00:01:53.000 --> 00:01:55.000 finding the next place where I could leave the trail 00:01:55.000 --> 00:01:58.000 and just find a bus stop or a 7-Eleven to get back. 00:01:58.000 --> 00:02:01.000 But I didn't really know the way back to the bus stop. 00:02:01.000 --> 00:02:04.000 And I was afraid that if I left the guy that I was hiking with 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:07.000 and then passed out, then I would be in real trouble. 00:02:07.000 --> 00:02:10.000 Because then there would be no one to call a helicopter 00:02:10.000 --> 00:02:13.000 to come in and lift me out or anything. 00:02:13.000 --> 00:02:17.000 And my throat was in pain from how thirsty I was. 00:02:17.000 --> 00:02:19.000 And we start walking down the hill, 00:02:19.000 --> 00:02:21.000 and I am just not sure what to do. 00:02:21.000 --> 00:02:23.000 And we get to the bottom of the hill, 00:02:23.000 --> 00:02:25.000 and there is a sink there. 00:02:25.000 --> 00:02:27.000 And the sink has a sign up that says, 00:02:27.000 --> 00:02:30.000 Unfiltered Stream Water, Do Not Drink. 00:02:30.000 --> 00:02:33.000 And I weighed the options in my mind. 00:02:33.000 --> 00:02:36.000 I said, alright, I can keep hiking, 00:02:36.000 --> 00:02:38.000 and I will get dehydrated. 00:02:38.000 --> 00:02:40.000 I will be in immense pain. 00:02:40.000 --> 00:02:43.000 I may pass out and need to be medevaced. 00:02:43.000 --> 00:02:46.000 Or I can drink the water, be okay for now, 00:02:46.000 --> 00:02:49.000 and maybe get sick in a day or two. 00:02:49.000 --> 00:02:52.000 But by then I will have access to medicine, 00:02:52.000 --> 00:02:54.000 so it will be okay. 00:02:54.000 --> 00:02:57.000 And so I did what I thought was the logical choice, 00:02:57.000 --> 00:03:00.000 and I filled up my water bottle, and I took a drink, 00:03:00.000 --> 00:03:05.000 and to this day that was the most refreshing drink of water 00:03:05.000 --> 00:03:08.000 I have ever had in my life. 00:03:08.000 --> 00:03:10.000 I drank as much as I could, 00:03:10.000 --> 00:03:12.000 and then I filled up my water bottle all the way to the top 00:03:12.000 --> 00:03:14.000 so that I would have water to keep going, 00:03:14.000 --> 00:03:17.000 and I had the energy to keep going the rest of the hike. 00:03:17.000 --> 00:03:19.000 I did not get sick, which is great news. 00:03:19.000 --> 00:03:23.000 In fact, I was satisfied by that water, 00:03:23.000 --> 00:03:28.000 and I was so satisfied that the next time I hiked past that point, 00:03:28.000 --> 00:03:31.000 I drank all the water in my water bottle 00:03:31.000 --> 00:03:35.000 so that I could refill my water bottle from that unfiltered stream water sink again, 00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:40.000 because the water was just so satisfying to me. 00:03:40.000 --> 00:03:45.000 And as we come here today, 00:03:45.000 --> 00:03:50.000 I want us to go away from here today 00:03:50.000 --> 00:03:53.000 understanding that level of satisfaction, 00:03:53.000 --> 00:03:57.000 but finding it not from a sink out in the middle of the forest, 00:03:57.000 --> 00:04:01.000 but from God's Word and from God Himself. 00:04:01.000 --> 00:04:04.000 If you've been around here at Watermark for the past few months, 00:04:04.000 --> 00:04:09.000 you may have noticed that we sort of had this theme running throughout our sermon series. 00:04:09.000 --> 00:04:13.000 We started back in late February, early March, 00:04:13.000 --> 00:04:15.000 with a series on union with Christ, 00:04:15.000 --> 00:04:19.000 and we basically looked at who we are in Jesus. 00:04:20.000 --> 00:04:25.000 And we moved on from there to a series on exodus and idolatry, 00:04:25.000 --> 00:04:28.000 and we said, okay, now that we know who we are in Jesus, 00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:31.000 let's look at the things that keep us from living like who we are. 00:04:32.000 --> 00:04:35.000 So we saw who we are, we saw what keeps us from living that way, 00:04:35.000 --> 00:04:38.000 and then we just wrapped up last week a series on the things that keep us from living like who we are. 00:04:38.000 --> 00:04:52.000 And we looked at having gracious words, and gracious accounting, and gracious timekeeping. 00:04:52.000 --> 00:04:55.000 And today we're going to start a new series on mission, 00:04:55.000 --> 00:04:58.000 where we say, okay, we understand who we are. 00:04:58.000 --> 00:05:02.000 We see and hopefully can avoid the things that keep us from living that way. 00:05:02.000 --> 00:05:06.000 We know how we should be living, but now God wants us to go out, 00:05:06.000 --> 00:05:10.000 and He wants us to invite others into this life. 00:05:10.000 --> 00:05:20.000 He wants us to go out and show others that they are invited to join us in this life with Christ. 00:05:20.000 --> 00:05:24.000 And we're starting in the book of Isaiah, chapter 55, 00:05:24.000 --> 00:05:31.000 and seeing this call to mission that God has for each and every one of us, if we are His people. 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:35.000 So in Isaiah 55 today, I want us to see three things. 00:05:35.000 --> 00:05:39.000 First, I want us to see an invitation to all. 00:05:39.000 --> 00:05:44.000 Then, I want us to see a call to live. 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:48.000 And finally, we'll look at the Messiah's call. 00:05:48.000 --> 00:05:51.000 But we're starting out with an invitation to all. 00:05:51.000 --> 00:05:52.000 It says, 00:05:52.000 --> 00:06:06.000 God starts out in this passage by saying, 00:06:06.000 --> 00:06:11.000 Those who are thirsty, come to me. 00:06:11.000 --> 00:06:13.000 What does it mean to be thirsty? 00:06:13.000 --> 00:06:16.000 It means that we're longing for something. 00:06:16.000 --> 00:06:19.000 You know, sort of like me on that hiking trail. 00:06:19.000 --> 00:06:22.000 I knew that there was this water that would satisfy me. 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:24.000 I just didn't know where to find it. 00:06:24.000 --> 00:06:27.000 And I think so many of us in life feel a similar way, 00:06:27.000 --> 00:06:30.000 that there's something we're looking for that we hope will satisfy us. 00:06:30.000 --> 00:06:34.000 But we have no idea where to find it. 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:42.000 And we've reached the point where we realize there's nothing we can do to satisfy that thirst on our own. 00:06:42.000 --> 00:06:45.000 And we don't know where to look anymore. 00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:48.000 And if that's you today, God is saying, 00:06:48.000 --> 00:06:49.000 Come to me. 00:06:51.000 --> 00:06:54.000 Not just the thirsty, but those who are unworthy. 00:06:54.000 --> 00:06:55.000 It says, 00:06:55.000 --> 00:06:57.000 He who has no money, come buy and eat. 00:06:57.000 --> 00:06:58.000 God is saying, 00:06:58.000 --> 00:07:00.000 If you are thirsty, come to me. 00:07:00.000 --> 00:07:06.000 If you have nothing of your own that you can bring to me and present to me and say, 00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:07.000 Here you go, God. 00:07:07.000 --> 00:07:10.000 This is my payment for what you're going to offer me. 00:07:10.000 --> 00:07:14.000 If you've reached the end of your rope and you're just like, 00:07:14.000 --> 00:07:17.000 I don't know how to come before God. 00:07:17.000 --> 00:07:19.000 I feel so broken. 00:07:19.000 --> 00:07:20.000 I feel so empty. 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:21.000 God says, 00:07:21.000 --> 00:07:23.000 That is who I want. 00:07:23.000 --> 00:07:26.000 I want you to come to me. 00:07:26.000 --> 00:07:30.000 He says, 00:07:30.000 --> 00:07:34.000 It's not about you getting yourself together so that you can come. 00:07:34.000 --> 00:07:36.000 No, just come as you are. 00:07:36.000 --> 00:07:37.000 Like the song we just sang, 00:07:37.000 --> 00:07:41.000 Come to me and I will satisfy you. 00:07:41.000 --> 00:07:46.000 You know, I've had so many conversations with people over the years where I talk with them about God and they're like, 00:07:46.000 --> 00:07:55.000 Well, you know, Eric, if you knew the type of person that I am, if you knew what I've done in the past, 00:07:55.000 --> 00:08:02.000 and if God knew those things, then you and God would know that there's definitely no place for me before God. 00:08:02.000 --> 00:08:08.000 God's not interested in people like me because I am so messed up. 00:08:08.000 --> 00:08:10.000 There's no way that he could accept me. 00:08:10.000 --> 00:08:17.000 And what God is saying right here is that if that is you and that's the way that you think, he wants you to come to him. 00:08:17.000 --> 00:08:26.000 He's saying those who are thirsty, those who have no money, those who have absolutely nothing to bring, 00:08:26.000 --> 00:08:31.000 are the ones that he wants to come to him. 00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:34.000 But he also calls out to another group. 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:35.000 If we look at verse 2, he says, 00:08:35.000 --> 00:08:41.000 Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread and your labor for that which does not satisfy? 00:08:41.000 --> 00:08:43.000 So in verse 1, we have the people with no money. 00:08:43.000 --> 00:08:48.000 In verse 2, we have the people who have money but are spending it in all the wrong places 00:08:48.000 --> 00:08:52.000 and still haven't found that thing that satisfies them. 00:08:52.000 --> 00:08:54.000 It's like Bono and you too. 00:08:54.000 --> 00:08:56.000 You still haven't found what you're looking for. 00:08:56.000 --> 00:09:00.000 You know, we go around, we're chasing something. 00:09:00.000 --> 00:09:02.000 We're looking for something. 00:09:02.000 --> 00:09:07.000 We move to a new city, we start a new job, we hope that that will satisfy. 00:09:07.000 --> 00:09:12.000 When it doesn't, we find a new girlfriend or boyfriend and buy a new car and hope that that will satisfy. 00:09:12.000 --> 00:09:15.000 When it doesn't, we buy the newest iPhone. 00:09:15.000 --> 00:09:18.000 When that disappoints us, we join a new country club. 00:09:18.000 --> 00:09:21.000 When that disappoints us, we go on a great vacation. 00:09:21.000 --> 00:09:25.000 When that disappoints us, we find another new boyfriend or girlfriend, 00:09:25.000 --> 00:09:27.000 because the last one still isn't working. 00:09:27.000 --> 00:09:29.000 We settle down and we get married. 00:09:29.000 --> 00:09:32.000 When that doesn't satisfy us, we find a mistress. 00:09:32.000 --> 00:09:35.000 When that doesn't satisfy us, we buy another new home, a little bit bigger than the old one, 00:09:35.000 --> 00:09:41.000 and we start a new job, and still we haven't found what we're looking for. 00:09:41.000 --> 00:09:52.000 We're spending our money, spending our lives chasing these things that don't ever satisfy and can't ever satisfy. 00:09:52.000 --> 00:10:00.000 And although we've chased so long and so hard, we still haven't found what we're looking for. 00:10:00.000 --> 00:10:07.000 And God says, if that is you, I want you to come to me today. 00:10:07.000 --> 00:10:11.000 And so God gives an invitation to everyone. 00:10:11.000 --> 00:10:19.000 Those who have something that they feel like they can offer, and those who don't, he wants you to come. 00:10:20.000 --> 00:10:25.000 Those who are just giving up hope on finding something, and those who are still going, 00:10:25.000 --> 00:10:28.000 still hoping that one day they might find it. 00:10:28.000 --> 00:10:31.000 It doesn't matter where you are. 00:10:31.000 --> 00:10:37.000 God is calling to you today to come. 00:10:37.000 --> 00:10:42.000 To come and find your satisfaction in him. 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:47.000 And what is this thing that he's calling us to? 00:10:47.000 --> 00:10:51.000 The second thing we need to see is that it is a call to life. 00:10:51.000 --> 00:10:53.000 God says, come to me. 00:10:53.000 --> 00:10:57.000 If you look at the commands in these verses, it's an amazing list of commands. 00:10:57.000 --> 00:11:01.000 He says, come, buy, eat, delight, live. 00:11:02.000 --> 00:11:05.000 Things that I think most of us enjoy doing generally. 00:11:06.000 --> 00:11:10.000 He says, come, come to the waters. 00:11:10.000 --> 00:11:12.000 If we think about what water does. 00:11:12.000 --> 00:11:14.000 Water gives life. 00:11:14.000 --> 00:11:15.000 Water refreshes. 00:11:15.000 --> 00:11:17.000 Water satisfies. 00:11:17.000 --> 00:11:19.000 Water gives us contentment. 00:11:19.000 --> 00:11:22.000 Just like I was satisfied by the water on my hike. 00:11:22.000 --> 00:11:26.000 God wants us to be satisfied with him. 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:32.000 And he invites each and every one of us today to come to him and find our satisfaction in him. 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:35.000 He says, come and buy. 00:11:35.000 --> 00:11:38.000 Buy wine and milk without money and not without price. 00:11:39.000 --> 00:11:41.000 If we think about what wine and milk do. 00:11:42.000 --> 00:11:44.000 They're special beverages. 00:11:44.000 --> 00:11:46.000 We'll start with milk. 00:11:48.000 --> 00:11:50.000 Milk makes you strong. 00:11:51.000 --> 00:11:56.000 Milk gives you life in a way that pretty much no other food or beverage does. 00:11:57.000 --> 00:11:58.000 Think about this. 00:11:58.000 --> 00:12:04.000 If you eat nothing but meat for two months, you're going to get sick. 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:06.000 You're going to get very sick. 00:12:06.000 --> 00:12:09.000 And you're probably going to have a hard time going to the bathroom. 00:12:09.000 --> 00:12:15.000 If you drink nothing but water for two months and don't eat anything or drink anything else, 00:12:16.000 --> 00:12:19.000 your body will start eating itself from the inside. 00:12:20.000 --> 00:12:26.000 But, if you drink nothing but milk and eat nothing else for two months, 00:12:26.000 --> 00:12:34.000 you will turn from a newborn baby into a child who's two or three times the size of that newborn baby 00:12:34.000 --> 00:12:36.000 and is fairly healthy. 00:12:36.000 --> 00:12:41.000 If a newborn cow drinks nothing but milk for months on end, 00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:44.000 it grows into an adult cow. 00:12:45.000 --> 00:12:51.000 Milk is probably the only beverage or food that we can survive off of for months on end 00:12:52.000 --> 00:12:56.000 simply with that and nothing else being our diet. 00:12:57.000 --> 00:12:58.000 And God says, come to me. 00:12:58.000 --> 00:12:59.000 I've got this milk for you. 00:12:59.000 --> 00:13:01.000 This milk that gives you life. 00:13:01.000 --> 00:13:03.000 This milk that makes you strong. 00:13:03.000 --> 00:13:06.000 I'm offering it to you today. 00:13:06.000 --> 00:13:09.000 And not just milk, but wine. 00:13:09.000 --> 00:13:12.000 Wine is a drink of excitement and celebration. 00:13:12.000 --> 00:13:17.000 I was at a birthday party last night and there was wine there. 00:13:17.000 --> 00:13:20.000 I was at an engagement party the night before and there was wine there. 00:13:20.000 --> 00:13:24.000 Wine is a drink that we drink when we are celebrating in life. 00:13:24.000 --> 00:13:33.000 And we live in a culture that longs for and sometimes even lives for celebrations. 00:13:33.000 --> 00:13:37.000 If you don't believe me, just think about how packed LKF is most nights of the week. 00:13:38.000 --> 00:13:45.000 Think about how many different parties are happening at different restaurants around Soho and the rest of the city. 00:13:45.000 --> 00:13:50.000 We live in a restaurant in the restaurant in the restaurant in the restaurant in the restaurant. 00:13:50.000 --> 00:13:55.000 And in the same restaurant at the same time, there were two other birthday parties going on. 00:13:56.000 --> 00:13:59.000 We love celebrating as a culture. 00:14:00.000 --> 00:14:04.000 And God, our creator, understands that desire to celebrate. 00:14:04.000 --> 00:14:12.000 And he says, I want you to come to me and I want to be the one who fulfills that desire in your hearts. 00:14:12.000 --> 00:14:14.000 I understand who you are. 00:14:14.000 --> 00:14:16.000 I understand how you operate. 00:14:17.000 --> 00:14:20.000 Come to me and you will find your satisfaction. 00:14:21.000 --> 00:14:27.000 But it's a different type of celebration than so many of the celebrations that happen in Hong Kong. 00:14:27.000 --> 00:14:31.000 You know, I think a lot of times in Hong Kong when people celebrate, 00:14:32.000 --> 00:14:36.000 the celebration is more a way of avoiding life than of celebrating it. 00:14:37.000 --> 00:14:39.000 We know that we are stressed out by work. 00:14:39.000 --> 00:14:45.000 We know that we are overwhelmed with everything that we have going on and financial woes and worries. 00:14:45.000 --> 00:14:47.000 And we think if I just go out with my friends to the bar, 00:14:48.000 --> 00:14:52.000 I have a couple of drinks more than I should, then I can forget about it for a little while. 00:14:53.000 --> 00:14:55.000 And maybe it won't be as bad when I wake up in the morning. 00:14:55.000 --> 00:14:59.000 That's not the type of celebration that God is inviting us into. 00:15:00.000 --> 00:15:03.000 He's inviting us into a celebration of life. 00:15:04.000 --> 00:15:09.000 Abundant, wonderful, amazing life that he provides for us. 00:15:10.000 --> 00:15:11.000 He says, come to me. 00:15:12.000 --> 00:15:16.000 Buy wine and milk without cost and without price. 00:15:18.000 --> 00:15:22.000 How can he offer us these things without any cost to ourselves? 00:15:22.000 --> 00:15:28.000 If you look back two chapters from this passage here in Isaiah 53, 00:15:29.000 --> 00:15:35.000 which is a very famous passage, prophecy of Jesus, who he would be, what he would do, 00:15:35.000 --> 00:15:37.000 how he would rescue and save us. 00:15:38.000 --> 00:15:43.000 And Isaiah 53 talks about how Jesus bears our guilt, 00:15:43.000 --> 00:15:46.000 how by his wounds we are healed. 00:15:46.000 --> 00:15:53.000 And what God wants us to see is that the way that he is able to offer us these things without cost to us 00:15:54.000 --> 00:15:57.000 is because they have come at a great cost to Jesus. 00:15:57.000 --> 00:16:05.000 He offers us these things as a gift because the price has already been paid by Jesus, 00:16:05.000 --> 00:16:10.000 which is why he is able to call to the thirsty and say, come. 00:16:10.000 --> 00:16:12.000 And those who have no money, come. 00:16:12.000 --> 00:16:13.000 You don't need to pay. 00:16:13.000 --> 00:16:18.000 The price has been paid for you to have this satisfaction, 00:16:18.000 --> 00:16:21.000 have this abundant life that I offer you. 00:16:21.000 --> 00:16:26.000 The price has been paid by Jesus, so you can come, you can enjoy. 00:16:26.000 --> 00:16:34.000 He then says, why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, 00:16:35.000 --> 00:16:38.000 and your labor for that which does not satisfy? 00:16:39.000 --> 00:16:45.000 He says, you're spending your life chasing these things that will never, ever make you whole. 00:16:46.000 --> 00:16:48.000 I want you to come to me. 00:16:48.000 --> 00:16:51.000 I want you to find this life in me, but you're not. 00:16:51.000 --> 00:16:56.000 When I was a kid, my church sent a missions trip team to Haiti. 00:16:57.000 --> 00:16:59.000 And they came back and they shared this story. 00:16:59.000 --> 00:17:02.000 It was one of the most heartbreaking stories I've ever heard. 00:17:03.000 --> 00:17:06.000 They said that in the nation of Haiti, the people are incredibly poor, 00:17:07.000 --> 00:17:16.000 so poor that they can't afford to go to the store and buy food like milk, vegetables, rice, meat, bread, anything. 00:17:16.000 --> 00:17:20.000 But obviously they hunger just like us. 00:17:21.000 --> 00:17:27.000 And so what they do to satisfy their hunger is they go out in the wild somewhere, 00:17:28.000 --> 00:17:33.000 and they take dirt and they filter out the dirt so that it's very, very fine. 00:17:34.000 --> 00:17:38.000 And they take the fine dirt and they mix in vegetable oil and salt, 00:17:38.000 --> 00:17:41.000 and they make these crackers, they dry them out in the sun. 00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:47.000 And so when the poor people need food to eat, they go, they give a little bit of money, 00:17:48.000 --> 00:17:51.000 and they get these sand crackers, and they eat them. 00:17:54.000 --> 00:17:57.000 And that's what the people do when they're hungry, 00:17:58.000 --> 00:18:01.000 because they can't afford the real food that will satisfy them. 00:18:01.000 --> 00:18:08.000 And although it may make them feel a little less hungry temporarily, 00:18:09.000 --> 00:18:13.000 it's something that if it continues long-term as a pattern, 00:18:43.000 --> 00:18:47.000 What are these things that we chase, that we seek our satisfaction in, 00:18:48.000 --> 00:18:49.000 that can never fill us, that aren't bread? 00:18:49.000 --> 00:18:52.000 I mean, it's the same list we always have here. 00:18:53.000 --> 00:18:57.000 Things like money, things like success and power, things like sex. 00:18:59.000 --> 00:19:02.000 What does it look like to live our lives chasing these things, 00:19:03.000 --> 00:19:04.000 seeking our satisfaction in them? 00:19:05.000 --> 00:19:07.000 We'll just pick one of them and pull on the thread and see what it looks like. 00:19:08.000 --> 00:19:09.000 Let's pick sex. 00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:12.000 We live in a culture that tells us, 00:19:13.000 --> 00:19:17.000 sex is where you find the greatest satisfaction and meaning in life. 00:19:17.000 --> 00:19:22.000 You need to be totally free to express yourself sexually any way that you want. 00:19:23.000 --> 00:19:29.000 And so many of us in the church have believed that lie and chased after it. 00:19:30.000 --> 00:19:32.000 So for some people, that means, you know, you just go to the bar, 00:19:33.000 --> 00:19:37.000 find someone to hook up with every weekend, every night, I don't know. 00:19:38.000 --> 00:19:44.000 For some people, it means, you know, look for a more solid, committed relationship. 00:19:44.000 --> 00:19:53.000 But once you're dating, you need to be free to express yourself sexually any way that you want in that relationship. 00:19:54.000 --> 00:19:55.000 It doesn't matter what God's Word says. 00:19:56.000 --> 00:19:59.000 What matters is what you think will make you happy. 00:19:59.000 --> 00:20:04.000 And so, as long as there's a boyfriend or girlfriend in the picture, 00:20:05.000 --> 00:20:07.000 we feel like, that's okay, I can do what I want. 00:20:08.000 --> 00:20:10.000 Because what God really wants is for me to be happy, 00:20:11.000 --> 00:20:16.000 and what it's going to take for me to be happy is for me to be able to have sex with this person right now. 00:20:16.000 --> 00:20:29.000 And in reality, an unwillingness to follow God's commands in any area of our lives shows that we are not satisfied in Him yet. 00:20:30.000 --> 00:20:35.000 And for others of us, we look at it and we say, like, you know, God's Word says, 00:20:35.000 --> 00:20:42.000 no sex outside of marriage, except, you know, no sex with anyone except your partner, your spouse. 00:20:43.000 --> 00:20:50.000 And so there are people in the church who will get married and then think, you know, 00:20:50.000 --> 00:20:55.000 they still believe the lie that sex is what will satisfy ultimately. 00:20:55.000 --> 00:20:58.000 And so they get married, but then once they're married, 00:20:59.000 --> 00:21:05.000 they'll manipulate or abuse their spouse to give them that fulfillment that they want, 00:21:06.000 --> 00:21:11.000 because they believe the lie that this is what will make me happy in life. 00:21:12.000 --> 00:21:15.000 And if I can't get what I want out of my spouse, 00:21:16.000 --> 00:21:19.000 then they don't deserve to have a good life. 00:21:19.000 --> 00:21:21.000 They deserve to be made miserable by me, 00:21:21.000 --> 00:21:25.000 because I need my satisfaction. 00:21:25.000 --> 00:21:29.000 We're chasing the bread that will not satisfy. 00:21:30.000 --> 00:21:36.000 One more way that this works out in our lives is pornography. 00:21:37.000 --> 00:21:42.000 So many people inside the church believe that, 00:21:42.000 --> 00:21:47.000 hey, you know, it's not really sex, so it's not that bad if I do it right. 00:21:47.000 --> 00:21:53.000 If I'm just fantasizing about it, then that can't really be that bad. 00:21:54.000 --> 00:22:08.000 And so many people in the church spend huge amounts of time watching online these images of all of their fantasies being fulfilled, 00:22:08.000 --> 00:22:11.000 because they believe that that will satisfy. 00:22:11.000 --> 00:22:21.000 And honestly, if I'm being totally honest, I think this area of pornography is probably one of the biggest ways that we as a church have failed the church body. 00:22:22.000 --> 00:22:28.000 Because the statistics say that pornography use, even among Christians, is massive. 00:22:28.000 --> 00:22:31.000 I have some stats here. 00:22:31.000 --> 00:22:35.000 Among guys aged 13 to 24, 00:22:36.000 --> 00:22:42.000 non-practicing Christians, 72% say that they access pornography frequently. 00:22:43.000 --> 00:22:48.000 Among practicing Christians in that age group, the number is 41%. 00:22:48.000 --> 00:22:54.000 And if you're a parent here thinking, like, there's no way my kid falls into that category, 00:22:55.000 --> 00:22:58.000 71% of teens hide their online behavior from their parents. 00:23:01.000 --> 00:23:06.000 But pornography isn't just something that's confined to that age group and that gender. 00:23:07.000 --> 00:23:09.000 It's ubiquitous in our culture. 00:23:09.000 --> 00:23:15.000 One out of every three downloads from the internet is pornography related. 00:23:16.000 --> 00:23:21.000 One out of every four search engine searches on the internet is pornography related. 00:23:22.000 --> 00:23:24.000 And it's not just a men's problem. 00:23:25.000 --> 00:23:29.000 About one out of every four users of pornography is also a woman. 00:23:29.000 --> 00:23:38.000 And so this is a major, major way that our culture tells us you can find satisfaction here. 00:23:39.000 --> 00:23:44.000 Here is something that will satisfy your spiritual hunger. 00:23:45.000 --> 00:23:52.000 And we as a church have so often and so frequently believed that lie and chased it. 00:23:53.000 --> 00:23:57.000 But what we're chasing is things that are not bread, things that will not satisfy. 00:23:57.000 --> 00:24:01.000 We're eating the spiritual equivalent of a sand cracker. 00:24:02.000 --> 00:24:05.000 It makes our stomach be full of food. 00:24:06.000 --> 00:24:09.000 But in the end, it's going to kill us. 00:24:10.000 --> 00:24:15.000 And yes, sex is a good gift from God, but when we take it and make it ultimate, 00:24:16.000 --> 00:24:19.000 it's something that can't ever satisfy us. 00:24:20.000 --> 00:24:23.000 And you know how I know that it can't ever satisfy us? 00:24:23.000 --> 00:24:33.000 Because there has been literally no one ever in history who's had such an amazing sexual experience that they've been like, 00:24:34.000 --> 00:24:38.000 that's it. I'm done. I never need to have sex anymore because that was so amazing. 00:24:39.000 --> 00:24:42.000 No, it always leaves you hungry for more. 00:24:42.000 --> 00:24:47.000 It holds out this promise that it can satisfy, but it doesn't. 00:24:47.000 --> 00:24:54.000 It just gives you a hunger for needing it again and again and again. 00:24:55.000 --> 00:25:02.000 Constantly holding out this promise that it can satisfy and never following through on that promise. 00:25:02.000 --> 00:25:06.000 And God here is saying, I can satisfy. 00:25:07.000 --> 00:25:14.000 In ways that no amount of money, no amount of success, no amount of power, no amount of sex can ever satisfy you. 00:25:14.000 --> 00:25:15.000 I can satisfy you. 00:25:15.000 --> 00:25:16.000 I can satisfy you. 00:25:17.000 --> 00:25:21.000 And I'm offering you this satisfaction for free. 00:25:22.000 --> 00:25:23.000 I don't care who you are. 00:25:23.000 --> 00:25:24.000 I don't care where you've been. 00:25:24.000 --> 00:25:26.000 I don't care what you've done. 00:25:26.000 --> 00:25:28.000 I want you to come to me. 00:25:29.000 --> 00:25:30.000 I want you to come. 00:25:31.000 --> 00:25:36.000 I want you to buy and eat this wine and this milk without price. 00:25:36.000 --> 00:25:41.000 I want you to eat this bread that satisfies you and delight in it. 00:25:42.000 --> 00:25:48.000 Because I know the cravings and desires of your heart and I want to satisfy them. 00:25:48.000 --> 00:25:50.000 I want you to come and live. 00:25:51.000 --> 00:25:56.000 Because all these things that you're chasing other than me cannot give you life. 00:25:57.000 --> 00:25:58.000 And I can. 00:25:58.000 --> 00:26:04.000 God says, come to me. 00:26:05.000 --> 00:26:10.000 Buy, eat, delight, live. 00:26:11.000 --> 00:26:17.000 And that's an invitation that he gives to each and every one of us here today. 00:26:21.000 --> 00:26:26.000 The third thing that I want us to see from this passage is the Messiah's call. 00:26:26.000 --> 00:26:30.000 If you look at verses one through three, it starts out talking to everyone. 00:26:30.000 --> 00:26:32.000 And the pronoun used is you. 00:26:33.000 --> 00:26:35.000 So the you's here are all referring to everyone. 00:26:36.000 --> 00:26:39.000 When you jump down to verse four, the pronoun switches to him. 00:26:40.000 --> 00:26:42.000 And verse five goes back to you. 00:26:42.000 --> 00:26:46.000 But the you in verse five, you don't see it in English because it's very confusing in English. 00:26:47.000 --> 00:26:49.000 But if you could read it in the original Hebrew, 00:26:49.000 --> 00:26:55.000 the you in verse five is referring to the him from verse four, not the everyone from verse one. 00:26:55.000 --> 00:26:57.000 A little grammar lesson. 00:26:58.000 --> 00:27:05.000 But what's happening is that there's this transition from talking to everyone about everyone 00:27:06.000 --> 00:27:13.000 to talking specifically about this him, which is referring, the him is referring to Jesus. 00:27:14.000 --> 00:27:19.000 He's talking in the end of verse three about the promise that he made with David. 00:27:19.000 --> 00:27:26.000 And then he starts talking about these things that never actually happened in David's life. 00:27:26.000 --> 00:27:31.000 And so generally what people think is that he's referring not specifically to David himself, 00:27:31.000 --> 00:27:40.000 but to David's descendant, Jesus, as the heir of the promises that God made to David. 00:27:40.000 --> 00:27:45.000 Specifically, that David would never lack someone reigning on the throne of Israel. 00:27:46.000 --> 00:27:53.000 And so God says that this, this heir of David, this Messiah or Jesus, 00:27:53.000 --> 00:27:58.000 is going to be a witness to the peoples, a commander and leader for the peoples, 00:27:58.000 --> 00:28:00.000 that he will call a nation you do not know, 00:28:00.000 --> 00:28:04.000 and a nation that did not know you will run to you because of the Lord your God 00:28:04.000 --> 00:28:08.000 and of the Holy One of Israel, for he has glorified you. 00:28:09.000 --> 00:28:14.000 Now, if you know anything about Old Testament Israel and their beliefs about God and salvation, 00:28:15.000 --> 00:28:20.000 one thing you would know is that their beliefs about salvation were very ethnocentric. 00:28:20.000 --> 00:28:25.000 They believed that God's work of salvation centered around Israel as a nation, 00:28:25.000 --> 00:28:30.000 and that anyone else who wanted in basically had to come to Israel, 00:28:30.000 --> 00:28:34.000 and salvation came through being an Israelite. 00:28:35.000 --> 00:28:39.000 And what God's saying here is that through this Messiah, through Jesus, 00:28:39.000 --> 00:28:44.000 he's going to send out a call to the nations, to everyone, 00:28:44.000 --> 00:28:49.000 to come and join in this salvation that he is offering. 00:28:50.000 --> 00:28:54.000 If you look back in Isaiah chapter 54, God basically tells Israel, 00:28:55.000 --> 00:28:57.000 enlarge your tents, I'm bringing new people in, 00:28:57.000 --> 00:29:01.000 you don't have space for everyone that I'm going to include in this family right now, 00:29:01.000 --> 00:29:02.000 you need more space. 00:29:03.000 --> 00:29:07.000 And now in chapter 55, he tells them how he's going to do that. 00:29:07.000 --> 00:29:11.000 He's going to send the Messiah, Jesus, the Savior, 00:29:11.000 --> 00:29:14.000 out into the nations with this message of salvation, 00:29:14.000 --> 00:29:20.000 and he's going to call people in and welcome people from all over the earth to come and join. 00:29:20.000 --> 00:29:23.000 So it's not just something for the Jews anymore, 00:29:23.000 --> 00:29:27.000 it's something for the Americans and the Chinese and the Australians and the British 00:29:27.000 --> 00:29:31.000 and even the South Africans and Texans. 00:29:32.000 --> 00:29:34.000 Jesus loves you, babe. 00:29:34.000 --> 00:29:44.000 And he says that the Messiah will call to the nations and they will come running to him. 00:29:46.000 --> 00:29:50.000 The story of the Bible is the story of God creating humanity, 00:29:50.000 --> 00:29:54.000 humanity rebelling against God, humanity being separated from God, 00:29:54.000 --> 00:29:59.000 and Jesus coming down as the Savior to die for our sin and rebellion, 00:29:59.000 --> 00:30:02.000 to give us a new relationship with God, 00:30:02.000 --> 00:30:07.000 to restore us to the relationship with God that we were originally created for, 00:30:08.000 --> 00:30:11.000 and to lead us as his people. 00:30:13.000 --> 00:30:17.000 And right here, it says that when he spreads that message, 00:30:17.000 --> 00:30:22.000 when he sends out that call to come join in that story and follow him, 00:30:22.000 --> 00:30:24.000 that results will happen. 00:30:24.000 --> 00:30:28.000 People will come running to him. 00:30:28.000 --> 00:30:34.000 It's not based on the ability and skill of the people sharing the message, 00:30:34.000 --> 00:30:39.000 it's based on the faithfulness and promise of God to keep his word. 00:30:40.000 --> 00:30:43.000 And so if you're here today and you're not a Christian, 00:30:44.000 --> 00:30:49.000 my challenge to you today is to come running to him. 00:30:49.000 --> 00:30:55.000 You've been spending your life chasing things that at the end of the day, 00:30:56.000 --> 00:31:01.000 hold out lots of promise but always, always, always leave you empty. 00:31:03.000 --> 00:31:07.000 And Jesus is offering salvation and life. 00:31:08.000 --> 00:31:10.000 He's calling you to come running to him. 00:31:11.000 --> 00:31:13.000 Will you run to him? 00:31:13.000 --> 00:31:14.000 Will you run to him? 00:31:15.000 --> 00:31:17.000 If you're here today and you're a Christian, 00:31:18.000 --> 00:31:24.000 I want you to see how God is inviting you to join in on this call. 00:31:25.000 --> 00:31:29.000 See the fact is, Jesus came historically to the earth. 00:31:30.000 --> 00:31:32.000 He lived for about 33 years. 00:31:32.000 --> 00:31:33.000 He spread His message around. 00:31:33.000 --> 00:31:35.000 He died for our sins. 00:31:35.000 --> 00:31:36.000 He rose again. 00:31:36.000 --> 00:31:39.000 And then He ascended into heaven, 00:31:39.000 --> 00:31:41.000 where He now sits at the Father's right hand. 00:31:41.000 --> 00:31:48.880 Father's right hand. But right before he ascended back into heaven, he gave this little speech to 00:31:48.880 --> 00:31:56.819 his followers in Matthew chapter 28, and he said, go into all the world and make disciples. He said, 00:31:56.900 --> 00:32:01.240 baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey 00:32:01.240 --> 00:32:08.859 everything that I have commanded you. And lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age. 00:32:08.859 --> 00:32:16.219 Now what this means is that Jesus has invited us to join him in spreading this call. He has appointed 00:32:16.219 --> 00:32:24.159 us as his messengers to carry this call to the nations for him. He's appointed us as the people 00:32:24.159 --> 00:32:32.199 that are going out and inviting everyone to join in on this amazing offer to come, buy, eat, delight, 00:32:32.200 --> 00:32:41.460 live, experience satisfaction in him alone. And he says that he will be with us always as we do this, 00:32:41.539 --> 00:32:48.059 which means that as we go out and as we make this proclamation and invitation, that he is alongside 00:32:48.059 --> 00:32:55.640 us, making that call through us to the world. And just as it says that people will respond 00:32:55.640 --> 00:33:04.940 when Jesus calls to them, God promises that people will respond when we call to them and Jesus calls 00:33:04.940 --> 00:33:11.900 to them through us. That it's not dependent on our skill as messengers, but it's dependent on God's 00:33:11.900 --> 00:33:20.600 faithfulness as our Father and our provider. God doesn't just save us and rescue us so that we can sit down 00:33:20.599 --> 00:33:26.459 and become fat and content and satisfied. He saves us and rescues us so that we can join him, 00:33:26.919 --> 00:33:33.179 so we can go into the world, so that we can be his messengers and call people to come running to him 00:33:33.179 --> 00:33:38.699 and experience the same delight and satisfaction in him that we have experienced. 00:33:40.500 --> 00:33:43.259 And so what does this look like on a practical basis?
