So with that, let's turn again to John 7, starting in verse 37 is where 00:01:05.380 --> 00:01:15.800 we're going to read this morning. Hear the word of the Lord. On the last day of the feast, the great day, 00:01:15.799 --> 00:01:25.759 Jesus stood up and cried out, if anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, 00:01:25.840 --> 00:01:32.599 as the scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. Now this he said about 00:01:32.599 --> 00:01:38.560 the spirit whom those who believed in him were to receive. For as yet, the spirit had not yet been 00:01:38.560 --> 00:01:45.000 given because Jesus was not yet glorified. When they heard these words, some of the people said, 00:01:45.000 --> 00:01:51.760 this is really the prophet. Others said, this is the Christ. But some said, is the Christ to come 00:01:51.760 --> 00:01:56.980 from Galilee? Has not the scripture said that the Christ comes from the offspring of David and comes 00:01:56.980 --> 00:02:02.659 from Bethlehem, the village where David was from? So there was a division among the people over him. 00:02:03.140 --> 00:02:09.020 Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. The officers then came to the chief 00:02:09.020 --> 00:02:14.460 priests and Pharisees who said to them, why did you not bring him? The officers answered, 00:02:14.460 --> 00:02:21.980 no one has ever spoken like this man. The Pharisees answered them, have you also been deceived? 00:02:22.360 --> 00:02:27.360 Have any of the authorities of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd that does not 00:02:27.360 --> 00:02:34.580 know the law is accursed. Nicodemus, who had gone to him before and who was one of them said to them, 00:02:34.800 --> 00:02:39.900 does our law judge a man without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does? 00:02:39.900 --> 00:02:47.360 They replied, are you from Galilee too? Help us see that all of 00:03:14.599 --> 00:03:22.500 history and all of scripture is centered on the person of Jesus Christ. Amen. 00:03:52.500 --> 00:04:02.900 There is an old Russian story of a monk who is given the task of delivering a large sum of money 00:04:02.900 --> 00:04:11.240 to a poor captain. And the monk is a wise young man and he understands this task is actually not as 00:04:11.240 --> 00:04:19.220 easy as many would think. So he goes to the captain's house and finds that it's this lopsided little shack 00:04:19.220 --> 00:04:26.420 and he enters and he actually finds the situation inside is even worse than it was outside. The poor 00:04:26.420 --> 00:04:33.540 captain's two children and his wife are sick and they're so poor that they can't afford the medicine 00:04:33.540 --> 00:04:40.520 they need to get well. And then the captain is a hopeless state as well. And in his hopelessness, 00:04:40.620 --> 00:04:48.240 he's given up and he's spending the tiny amount of money they have on alcohol to get drunk and escape. 00:04:49.220 --> 00:04:56.040 But the monk convinces him to come on a walk with him. And the captain and the monk walk and that's 00:04:56.040 --> 00:05:03.000 where the monk finally offers him this large sum of money. And the captain rejoices and he speaks of 00:05:03.000 --> 00:05:08.700 how this will give him hope and he can stop drinking and he can get the medicine he needs for his family 00:05:08.700 --> 00:05:17.900 and he can get them a new home. But all of a sudden, he stops and he looks at the monk and he crushes the 00:05:17.899 --> 00:05:23.779 notes in his hand and he throws them on the ground and stomps them into the dirt and walks back to his 00:05:23.779 --> 00:05:32.019 house where it was falling apart just like his family. And he apparently misunderstood the person 00:05:32.019 --> 00:05:39.739 who was offering the gift, maybe his intentions, or maybe he was just too proud to accept this greatest 00:05:39.740 --> 00:05:47.160 gift that he would ever receive. But he turned it down. And you could probably think of some similar 00:05:47.160 --> 00:05:53.420 stories that you've heard of maybe it's not as extreme, maybe it's a child. You're trying to offer 00:05:53.420 --> 00:05:59.500 good help, but they refuse it. Or maybe it's someone who needs guidance and when they have someone 00:05:59.500 --> 00:06:09.160 approached them, they refuse. All the time, precious gifts are rejected. And our passage today records 00:06:09.160 --> 00:06:17.399 something very similar. Jesus gives the greatest invitation of all time, but the people, many of 00:06:17.399 --> 00:06:24.120 them, foolishly and stubbornly refuse to accept it. And it's filled with this irony as they just 00:06:24.120 --> 00:06:31.699 completely missed the point. And in that, I think we see a warning for us. Don't follow their example. 00:06:32.800 --> 00:06:40.280 Both before and after coming to Christ, we're all in danger of missing the point, of missing Jesus 00:06:40.280 --> 00:06:48.480 and failing to treasure the gift that he has given to us. Our world is filled with confusion 00:06:48.480 --> 00:06:55.920 about who Jesus is and even ridicule for those who trust in him. And I think for all of us, it can 00:06:55.920 --> 00:07:03.640 take our eyes off of Jesus. You may have been coming to church your whole life. You may know a lot about 00:07:03.640 --> 00:07:11.960 the Bible, but you can still miss the point as well. You can still miss Jesus, just like the crowds and 00:07:11.960 --> 00:07:17.939 the Pharisees did in our passage. So again, this is an even sadder story than the one of the monk 00:07:17.939 --> 00:07:25.540 and the captains. It's of the crowds and the Pharisees who reject Jesus' offer. And I believe it's 00:07:25.540 --> 00:07:32.399 intended to lead us to ask, how will I respond? And so our first point today, if you're taking notes, 00:07:33.019 --> 00:07:41.360 our first point today in John 7 verses 37 through 39 is how will you respond to the invitation? 00:07:41.360 --> 00:07:51.040 So again, that's John 7 verse 37. And it starts by saying it was the last day of the feast, the great 00:07:51.040 --> 00:07:57.840 day, as verse 37 says. And I want you to just, in your mind's eye, picture what it would be like to 00:07:57.840 --> 00:08:04.920 have been there. The people would have been living in these booths or these tents for about seven days 00:08:04.920 --> 00:08:12.000 now. And things would have been crowded. The people would have been needing a good bath, needing to 00:08:12.000 --> 00:08:19.200 get home to their beds. It would have been sore. And all of it would have, it was all intended to 00:08:19.200 --> 00:08:24.680 remind them of the time when the people of Israel were wandering in the wilderness, living in tents of 00:08:24.680 --> 00:08:31.139 their own. And it was the last day, this great day. And they had this ceremony that they would do, 00:08:31.139 --> 00:08:35.620 where they would take a golden pitcher and they'd fill it up with water. And they would have a 00:08:35.620 --> 00:08:40.879 procession that walks back to the temple. And when they get to the temple, they would pour the water 00:08:40.879 --> 00:08:48.240 out on the dry ground. And it was a way of remembering the time when in the middle of the desert, God had 00:08:48.240 --> 00:08:54.919 provided water out of the rock. But it was also intended to look not just back, but to look forward. 00:08:54.919 --> 00:09:06.479 Isaiah 44 says that God would pour out his spirit on his people like water on a dry ground. And this is 00:09:06.479 --> 00:09:15.259 what they were anticipating. And it's in this ceremonial and significant moment in time that Jesus stands 00:09:15.259 --> 00:09:24.899 up and cries out, if anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, 00:09:24.919 --> 00:09:32.139 as the scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water. This is like the 00:09:32.139 --> 00:09:40.379 climax of John 7, maybe of the book so far. And John wants to go ahead and clarify. We even sung 00:09:40.379 --> 00:09:45.039 about living waters. And so we want to see what John is talking about, really what Jesus is talking 00:09:45.039 --> 00:09:53.339 about when he says living waters. And so John clarifies in verse 39 that this he said about the 00:09:53.340 --> 00:10:00.440 spirit whom those who believed in him were to receive. For as yet the spirit had not been given 00:10:00.440 --> 00:10:10.060 because Jesus was not yet glorified. So notice what Jesus is doing here. On this great day of the feast, 00:10:10.399 --> 00:10:17.500 they're anticipating the spirit of God being poured out like water on a dry and thirsty ground. And Jesus 00:10:17.500 --> 00:10:26.460 is saying, you must come to me for that. He's saying, this whole festival, it's looking forward 00:10:26.460 --> 00:10:33.039 to me. That's what he's saying. Even the way he phrases the call should remind us of what we read 00:10:33.039 --> 00:10:41.940 earlier in Isaiah 55. Remember, it says, come and drink, come and eat. And Jesus even phrasing it like 00:10:41.940 --> 00:10:48.300 that is a way of him identifying himself with God, who is speaking in Isaiah 55. He's identifying 00:10:48.300 --> 00:10:55.580 himself as God and as the one who can give the gift of God, the Holy Spirit, into the hearts of his people. 00:10:56.720 --> 00:11:03.340 And it's interesting because he references how this is scripture has said this. But actually, if you look, 00:11:03.420 --> 00:11:11.360 there isn't a direct quote. So it's not like a word for word quote of any one passage. Instead, it seems to be 00:11:11.360 --> 00:11:18.180 just like a general reference of how the Old Testament scriptures anticipated a time when the 00:11:18.180 --> 00:11:26.039 Holy Spirit would be poured out. I think Jesus is saying he is the fulfillment of all those promises. 00:11:26.300 --> 00:11:34.480 This is where scripture has been pointing forward to. He's saying whoever will believe in him will 00:11:34.480 --> 00:11:42.379 receive the Holy Spirit. So you need to understand this invitation is where all of the Old Testament 00:11:42.379 --> 00:11:50.019 has been leading to, has been pointing to. These passages, these ceremonies are all looking to Jesus. 00:11:51.139 --> 00:11:57.659 And so I just want to challenge you. If you are reading your Old Testament without ever thinking 00:11:57.659 --> 00:12:06.100 about Jesus, you're reading it wrong. Jesus is saying it's looking to me. And I want to challenge 00:12:06.100 --> 00:12:14.399 you. Look for Christ in all of scripture. Notice how the Old Testament is longing for someone to come 00:12:14.399 --> 00:12:21.879 and make things right. Notice how all of the heroes of the Old Testament are simply imperfect reflections 00:12:21.879 --> 00:12:29.600 of the one, the Christ, the Messiah who is coming. And I want you to challenge you to read your Old 00:12:29.600 --> 00:12:38.360 Testament like Jesus does. Like it's all pointing towards him and his offer of life. It's easy to read 00:12:38.360 --> 00:12:46.320 the Old Testament and miss the longing in it. And I think it's easy, even easy for us to miss the longing 00:12:46.320 --> 00:12:55.220 that's in our hearts. The thirst for something to be made right. My dad is actually a lot like this 00:12:55.220 --> 00:13:02.420 with literal water. Using the example of literal water, he can go all day and not drink anything. And 00:13:02.420 --> 00:13:09.100 he would just keep going until he collapsed. Unless somebody takes a water bottle and puts it in front of 00:13:09.100 --> 00:13:14.420 his face and says, drink this. And then all of a sudden he realizes how thirsty he's been. And he 00:13:14.419 --> 00:13:23.819 downs the whole water bottle. And Jesus' invitation in some ways should be like that of saying, 00:13:24.539 --> 00:13:30.299 look, you're thirsty. You might not realize it, but you're thirsty. Drink this. Or maybe it's to the 00:13:30.299 --> 00:13:37.479 people who already realize they are broken. They need the solution, the life that the Holy Spirit can 00:13:37.480 --> 00:13:47.399 offer. But whoever it is, he welcomes them all to come to him and drink. And again, it's not talking 00:13:47.399 --> 00:13:54.720 about physical water here. John clarifies it's talking about the Holy Spirit. All those who come to 00:13:54.720 --> 00:14:01.940 Jesus in faith will be given the Holy Spirit in their hearts. And the analogy Jesus uses is so good 00:14:01.940 --> 00:14:08.880 because it shows the total transformation that takes place. Before Jesus, they were thirsty. 00:14:09.900 --> 00:14:18.080 After Jesus, their heart is overflowing with living water. Before Jesus, they were in desperate need. 00:14:18.720 --> 00:14:26.980 But after, their life-giving, blessing others, flowing out. And it's just like Jesus said, 00:14:26.980 --> 00:14:31.639 this might remind you of chapter 4 when Jesus talked to the woman at the well. And it's just 00:14:31.639 --> 00:14:38.100 like that, where Jesus is saying, even here, the person who drinks will never be thirsty again. 00:14:39.120 --> 00:14:46.460 And I want you to notice in all of this how great Jesus is. All of the feasts, all the stories, 00:14:46.620 --> 00:14:54.039 all the promises of the Old Testament are looking forward to him. And how great must he be that all 00:14:54.039 --> 00:15:00.360 of scripture is looking forward to him. And how great must he be that he can offer God, 00:15:00.459 --> 00:15:06.480 the Holy Spirit, to dwell in the hearts of all who believe in him. I mean, think about it. Before 00:15:06.480 --> 00:15:13.099 that time, if people, just anybody out and about, was to enter the temple of God, they would die. 00:15:14.259 --> 00:15:20.819 But now, Jesus is saying, if you believe in me, you can have God, the Holy Spirit, dwell in your 00:15:20.820 --> 00:15:28.820 hearts. It's an incredible promise that could only be offered by an incredible person. If Jesus was 00:15:28.820 --> 00:15:37.640 just a good example for us, we would be hopelessly lost. I mean, nobody can live up to his example 00:15:37.640 --> 00:15:46.920 in our own strength. But he not only shows us what a righteous life looks like, he offers us the Holy 00:15:46.919 --> 00:15:55.679 Spirit to dwell in our hearts, to change us, empower us, secure us. And I think all of this 00:15:55.679 --> 00:16:01.939 might explain a little bit of why John says here, the Spirit had not yet been given because 00:16:01.939 --> 00:16:09.459 Jesus was not yet glorified. So Jesus being glorified refers to his death, his resurrection, 00:16:09.460 --> 00:16:16.660 and his ascension. And it's clear that this, so this was done, the death, the burial, the resurrection, 00:16:17.120 --> 00:16:22.879 it was done to pay the penalty of the sins of all who trust in him, to atone for their sin and their 00:16:22.879 --> 00:16:30.280 guilt. And this is important because if that were not possible, to have our sin atoned for, our guilt 00:16:30.280 --> 00:16:37.120 taken away, then it would not be possible to have the Holy Spirit living in us. That's why Jesus had to be 00:16:37.120 --> 00:16:43.240 glorified first and then the Spirit would come. I mean, think about how frightening it would be for you 00:16:43.240 --> 00:16:50.340 to have the Holy Spirit living in your heart all while you're under the wrath of God. You wouldn't 00:16:50.340 --> 00:16:58.820 survive. But Jesus has taken us from enemies to children. He's taken away our guilt and now we know 00:16:58.820 --> 00:17:06.200 that the Spirit is for us. And if he is for us, nothing can stand against us. And he's not just out there 00:17:06.200 --> 00:17:14.880 working on our behalf. He is within us, working on our behalf. And this is why Jesus says in John 16, 00:17:15.319 --> 00:17:22.559 it's to your advantage that I go away. For if I don't go, the Spirit, the Helper, will not come to you. 00:17:22.960 --> 00:17:29.559 But if I go, I will send him to you. He's saying it's better for you to have the Holy Spirit in your 00:17:29.559 --> 00:17:36.000 heart than to be able to walk and see Jesus with your own eyes. It's better to have the Holy Spirit 00:17:36.000 --> 00:17:43.240 in you. And when we look at this passage in John 7, we can see why. The Holy Spirit's work is 00:17:43.240 --> 00:17:50.059 beautifully described, not as stagnant water. I think this is kind of swamp land around here in 00:17:50.059 --> 00:17:54.299 some spots, if I'm remembering this right. You got swamps around here and you know how, 00:17:54.299 --> 00:18:02.299 you know how bad that can be, marshy. But he's describing a beautiful river of living water. 00:18:03.299 --> 00:18:12.279 That's what this picture of the Holy Spirit is in us, in offering us God himself. Jesus not only 00:18:12.279 --> 00:18:20.559 meets our needs, he changes our hearts so they overflow and bless others with the fruit of the Holy Spirit. 00:18:20.559 --> 00:18:29.839 We are flowing out now because we have been filled with the Spirit. So praise Jesus. Because without 00:18:29.839 --> 00:18:35.720 him, we wouldn't, we'd be dying of thirst. We wouldn't have the gift of the Holy Spirit and the 00:18:35.720 --> 00:18:43.159 fruits of the Holy Spirit in our lives. And now, in response, we should seek to walk in step with the 00:18:43.160 --> 00:18:51.640 Spirit. Who intends to make our lives not a stagnant pool, but a river of life that flows outward and 00:18:51.640 --> 00:18:59.220 blesses others and brings the good news of life as well. And if there's anybody here today who hasn't 00:18:59.220 --> 00:19:06.920 come to Christ by believing in him, I just want you to see Jesus offers this to all who are thirsty. 00:19:06.920 --> 00:19:15.259 So if you are here today and you feel your need for him, then my friend, you qualify. He offers this to 00:19:15.259 --> 00:19:22.779 you. It's not just a get out of hell card. No, it's so much more. He's promising you the deepest 00:19:22.779 --> 00:19:29.160 communion with God possible. That he would dwell in your hearts. The Holy Spirit to dwell in your 00:19:29.160 --> 00:19:36.420 hearts and change you and bring you joy and knowledge of God. There could be no greater 00:19:36.420 --> 00:19:43.460 invitation. And we're going to read, we're going to read about some people who just totally missed this. 00:19:44.480 --> 00:19:51.519 I just want to warn you, if you have not believed in Christ, do not be like them. Come back to what 00:19:51.519 --> 00:19:58.759 Jesus is offering and accept this gift through faith in him. Well, let's look at some of those responses. 00:19:58.759 --> 00:20:05.599 So first we had the invitation in verses 37 through 39, but now in verses 40 through 44, 00:20:05.599 --> 00:20:13.819 I want you to ask the question, how will I respond to the confusion? So how will you respond to the 00:20:13.819 --> 00:20:21.299 confusion in verses 40 through 44? Look down at your Bibles with me at verse 40. When they heard these 00:20:21.299 --> 00:20:28.319 words, some of the people said, this really is the prophet. Others said, this is the Christ. But some 00:20:28.319 --> 00:20:34.639 said, is the Christ to come from Galilee? Has not the scripture said that the Christ comes from the 00:20:34.639 --> 00:20:40.119 offspring of David and comes from Bethlehem, the village where David was? So there was a division 00:20:40.119 --> 00:20:48.299 among the people. Some of them wanted to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him. So all throughout 00:20:48.299 --> 00:20:55.079 chapter seven, there's been this debate, this confusion about who Jesus is. The city would have been 00:20:55.079 --> 00:21:02.059 seething with discussion and debate. Many are partially correct because they see and they believe 00:21:02.059 --> 00:21:09.339 Jesus is the long awaited prophet. This is the one from Deuteronomy 18, who would have been the prophet 00:21:09.339 --> 00:21:16.839 greater than Moses that was promised to come. And others are partially correct in seeing he's the Christ. 00:21:17.079 --> 00:21:23.019 But both groups seem to be saying it's an either or situation. Maybe he's the prophet, maybe he's the Christ, 00:21:23.019 --> 00:21:30.039 but it's a both and. He is that prophet and he is the Christ. And he's so much more than they even see 00:21:30.039 --> 00:21:37.200 in these moments. But they're on the right track. They're accepting who Jesus is saying he is. But many 00:21:37.200 --> 00:21:44.900 are rejecting it outright. There's this division between the people because many can't get past the 00:21:44.900 --> 00:21:54.019 fact that Jesus should be from Bethlehem, not from Galilee. And you can see the irony of this situation, this 00:21:54.019 --> 00:22:02.060 irony that John is creating here, because in fact, Jesus is from Bethlehem. On more than one occasion, I've had 00:22:02.060 --> 00:22:08.540 conversations with my wife like this, where she'll ask me like to make sandwiches for the boys. And I'll respond 00:22:08.539 --> 00:22:14.539 something like, well, how can I make sandwiches without bread? And she'll sweetly and kindly respond, 00:22:14.720 --> 00:22:20.819 Andrew, the bread is where it always is. You have everything you need. And I think it's similar 00:22:20.819 --> 00:22:24.539 with this. The people are asking this question, how can we believe in you when you're not from 00:22:24.539 --> 00:22:29.940 Bethlehem? And it's just ironic because they're so wrong, like he is from Bethlehem. 00:22:30.539 --> 00:22:34.779 But I think it's also ironic because they're just totally missing the point. 00:22:34.779 --> 00:22:43.519 It's clear they've got sinful, hard hearts. Jesus is saying more than any town, he is from God, 00:22:43.660 --> 00:22:49.019 he's saying. And he's saying he can meet their deepest needs and offer them God, the Holy Spirit, 00:22:49.099 --> 00:22:53.420 to dwell in their hearts. And they're over here wondering, well, which town are you from? 00:22:54.279 --> 00:23:01.500 They're missing the big point. They're kind of like hikers going and analyzing the dirt to see if 00:23:01.500 --> 00:23:09.319 they've made it to Mount Everest when all they need to do is look up and see the mountain looming over 00:23:09.319 --> 00:23:15.480 them. And again, if you're not a believer in Christ, don't be like that hiker. Don't be like 00:23:15.480 --> 00:23:22.700 these people so sucked into your unanswered question that you miss the mountain of evidence 00:23:22.700 --> 00:23:28.519 that's standing in front of you. You may have a good question. It may be an important one, 00:23:28.519 --> 00:23:33.879 but don't let that confusion on that one question distract you from what is clear, 00:23:34.519 --> 00:23:40.420 that Christ is the one, Jesus is the one all of Scripture has been waiting for. He offers the 00:23:40.420 --> 00:23:45.440 greatest gift. Don't be distracted with your unanswered questions that you're unwilling to 00:23:45.440 --> 00:23:51.680 come to him. And I think for us believers in here, this is a helpful reminder as well in our evangelism. 00:23:52.119 --> 00:23:57.200 So often people feel like, well, I don't know the answer to some question. It's like, I need to have 00:23:57.200 --> 00:24:03.059 the answers to all the questions before I really start to call people to believe in Jesus. But 00:24:03.059 --> 00:24:08.980 that's missing the point too. You don't have to have all the answers to evangelize. You simply need 00:24:08.980 --> 00:24:16.319 to know Jesus and the wonderful gospel he offers and he preaches. You don't need to be able to analyze 00:24:16.319 --> 00:24:24.240 dirt samples. You simply need to tell people to look up and see Christ looming over them in his glory 00:24:24.240 --> 00:24:31.799 and in his grace. There's a lot of confusion in our world today, a lot of questions. So when we ask, 00:24:31.960 --> 00:24:38.839 how will I respond? I would just, I'd encourage you, keep coming back to Christ. Keep pointing people 00:24:38.839 --> 00:24:47.620 back to Christ, to trust in him and in the offer he has given to all people. But as we can see in John 7, 00:24:47.619 --> 00:24:53.599 that doesn't always mean people are going to believe. Just because you point them to Christ, 00:24:53.939 --> 00:25:01.359 often the invitation of the gospel actually leads to division and even ridicule. So our final question 00:25:01.359 --> 00:25:13.219 is, how will you respond to the ridicule? In verses 45 through 52. So Jesus gave the people this greatest 00:25:13.220 --> 00:25:21.740 invitation in existence. But many of them respond by wanting to arrest him. And the next time he's in 00:25:21.740 --> 00:25:30.360 Jerusalem, they will try to stone him. And the next time they will crucify him. But for now, the religious 00:25:30.360 --> 00:25:37.640 leaders settle for ridiculing him and all who trust in him. Look down with me at verse 45. And just for 00:25:37.640 --> 00:25:45.380 context, verse 1 in chapter 7 says that Jews were seeking to kill Jesus. And then in verse 32, the 00:25:45.380 --> 00:25:52.480 Pharisees send officers to arrest Jesus. And now they're returning empty-handed. So look down at verse 00:25:52.480 --> 00:25:59.720 45. The officers came to the chief priests and the Pharisees who said to them, why did you not bring him? 00:25:59.720 --> 00:26:10.559 The officers answered, no one ever spoke like this man. The Pharisees answered them, have you also been deceived? 00:26:10.940 --> 00:26:16.660 Have any of the authorities of the Pharisees believed in him? But this crowd that does not know the law is 00:26:16.660 --> 00:26:23.900 accursed. Nicodemus, who had gone to him before and who was one of them, said to them, does our law judge a man 00:26:23.900 --> 00:26:30.860 without first giving him a hearing and learning what he does? They replied, are you from Galilee too? 00:26:31.259 --> 00:26:40.640 Search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee. You can kind of see the way, at least in my view, 00:26:40.759 --> 00:26:46.200 the Pharisees are responding with intimidation and name-calling, something like what you'd see on the 00:26:46.200 --> 00:26:52.500 middle school playground. And just like middle school bullies aren't very great at debate, 00:26:52.500 --> 00:26:57.619 I think these Pharisees are making some of the same mistakes. I don't know if you ever took debate 00:26:57.619 --> 00:27:04.059 class growing up or anything, but if you did, maybe you'd recognize the Pharisees are making a logical 00:27:04.059 --> 00:27:12.839 fallacy called appeal to authority. They're arguing that Jesus is not the Messiah because none of the 00:27:12.839 --> 00:27:19.220 authorities of the Pharisees have believed in him. And what's more, they insult the crowd. The people who 00:27:19.220 --> 00:27:24.500 have believed in him, they insult them as ignorant. They don't know the law and they're under God's 00:27:24.500 --> 00:27:30.220 curse. They're just calling names for this crowd that they're supposed to be caring for and leading. 00:27:31.140 --> 00:27:38.519 But this type of argumentation, it occurs all the time today. People say, look, Christianity, 00:27:38.759 --> 00:27:46.539 it can't be true because like only 33% of scientists believe in a God. And so they go on to say, 00:27:46.539 --> 00:27:53.599 and the people who do believe in God, they're uneducated, they're unintelligent. And so clearly, 00:27:53.859 --> 00:27:59.980 Christianity must not be true. I think the issue is that the Pharisees in our passage and the people 00:27:59.980 --> 00:28:06.879 today making these arguments, they're elevating themselves as the standard of truth. They say they 00:28:06.879 --> 00:28:13.339 are the standard of truth instead of God's word. And they're really saying, Jesus can only be the 00:28:13.339 --> 00:28:21.579 Messiah if we say so. That's what it comes down to. But Jesus has spoken. All of scripture has pointed 00:28:21.579 --> 00:28:29.919 to him. And I think we can learn to trust God rather than man. I would just encourage you, don't let these 00:28:29.919 --> 00:28:37.579 arrogant claims of those who are seeking to shake your faith, don't let them, as they seek to disprove 00:28:37.579 --> 00:28:43.460 Christ, as they make similar arguments like the Pharisees here, don't let it shake your faith in 00:28:43.460 --> 00:28:51.980 Christ. The word has spoken. The infallible word of God has spoken. And we can trust God rather than 00:28:51.980 --> 00:28:58.539 man who raised themselves up as if they are the ultimate source of truth. But next, the Pharisees 00:28:58.539 --> 00:29:06.319 appeal to faulty information. They respond to Nicodemus, search and see that no prophet arises from Galilee. 00:29:06.319 --> 00:29:12.259 And it was actually interesting as I was studying this, actually, the town Jonah was from was in 00:29:12.259 --> 00:29:19.039 Galilee. And likely the town Nahum was as well in Galilee. So these prophets have come from Galilee. 00:29:19.619 --> 00:29:25.359 And I think it's just, again, John loves to use this irony. It's making it so ironic because the 00:29:25.359 --> 00:29:30.859 Pharisees are saying, you got to search the scriptures and you'll find it out. And they're calling out that 00:29:30.859 --> 00:29:36.139 the crowd doesn't know their scriptures. But all the while, they're the ones missing it. They're 00:29:36.140 --> 00:29:43.800 making clear mistakes. And ultimately, they are the ones who miss the one, the Christ, who all of 00:29:43.800 --> 00:29:50.900 Scripture is about. It's just highlighting this irony. And really, all of these insults as they're calling 00:29:50.900 --> 00:29:59.660 people deceived and Galileans and even accursed, all their insults and faulty arguments, they're just 00:29:59.660 --> 00:30:09.220 showing the glory of Jesus even more. He calls for the crowd to come to Him. And the Pharisees call the 00:30:09.220 --> 00:30:19.540 crowd ignorant and accursed. Jesus offers the Holy Spirit. They simply hurl insults. Jesus is the 00:30:19.540 --> 00:30:25.900 culmination of all of Scripture. But the Pharisees have just been picking and choosing which Scriptures 00:30:25.900 --> 00:30:33.240 they are going to believe and which laws they are going to follow. It just shows that Jesus is the 00:30:33.240 --> 00:30:40.560 great shepherd, the great leader of His people. He's unlike anything we have seen, you or I have seen. 00:30:40.920 --> 00:30:45.680 He's a great leader. And it's just so clear when you compare Him with the Pharisees here. 00:30:46.780 --> 00:30:52.740 And again, I just want to say the insults and the arguments in John 7, they still exist today. 00:30:52.740 --> 00:31:00.140 People are still making these insults and arguments today. And I think the glory of Jesus puts it all 00:31:00.140 --> 00:31:08.500 in perspective for us. If we're ridiculed, we can rejoice that we have been counted worthy to suffer 00:31:08.500 --> 00:31:16.400 insult for the sake of Christ. Why should we concern ourselves with what opinions of man are saying 00:31:16.400 --> 00:31:22.640 when we know Christ has called us and He has sent His Holy Spirit to dwell in our hearts? 00:31:22.740 --> 00:31:30.980 I think anytime there's ridicule, there's this temptation for us to kind of mellow and become 00:31:30.980 --> 00:31:37.599 a little bit less excited. For example, maybe you have a favorite restaurant and you love to talk 00:31:37.599 --> 00:31:42.660 about how fantastic this restaurant is, but then one day you hear your friends just ridiculing it and 00:31:42.660 --> 00:31:48.240 saying, oh, it's terrible. Never go there. That restaurant's awful. And in that moment, you can be 00:31:48.240 --> 00:31:52.259 tempted to say, well, maybe I won't. I mean, I was going to recommend it to you, but maybe I'll just 00:31:52.259 --> 00:31:59.420 maybe I'll be a little quiet. Maybe I won't see, talk about how great it really is. And I think we 00:31:59.420 --> 00:32:06.079 can be tempted to do this with Christ. When people are hurling insults at Christ and at His people, 00:32:06.440 --> 00:32:12.339 it can be easy to mellow and say, well, maybe Jesus isn't really like all that great. Maybe I don't 00:32:12.339 --> 00:32:19.119 need to make such a big deal of Jesus here. I'm just saying, don't let the insults of the world 00:32:19.119 --> 00:32:26.779 cool your affection and your praise for Christ. There's nobody like Him. He offers salvation. 00:32:26.959 --> 00:32:34.599 He offers the gift of the Holy Spirit. He offers life. And He is worthy of following and of all the 00:32:34.599 --> 00:32:41.879 praise that we could give to Him. So don't let it mellow your praise of Christ, your affection for Him. 00:32:41.880 --> 00:32:48.940 But I should say, if you are considering coming to Christ in faith, I think you should know this may 00:32:48.940 --> 00:32:55.520 happen to you. People may hurl insults at you. They may call you ignorant, just like the Pharisees did 00:32:55.520 --> 00:33:02.200 here in John 7. But once again, I think this is just another attempt to distract you from what is 00:33:02.200 --> 00:33:10.940 most important. Christ has called you to come. He's offered you life and blessing and security 00:33:10.940 --> 00:33:19.039 through the Holy Spirit dwelling in your hearts. Why turn that down on account of some passing insults? 00:33:19.600 --> 00:33:25.640 And I would just say, if you're here and you haven't believed in Christ, hear the words of Christ for you. 00:33:25.640 --> 00:33:33.320 Come to Him. Because how could we fathom the greatness of 00:34:04.500 --> 00:34:12.280 having the Holy Spirit dwell in our hearts through faith? God no longer remains outside of us, but in 00:34:12.280 --> 00:34:19.200 our hearts, causing us to overflow with life. If you have fruits of the Spirit, that's His work in you. You 00:34:19.200 --> 00:34:25.300 praise Him for it. Notice the greatness of the gift we have been given in the Spirit. 00:34:25.639 --> 00:34:32.519 And believer, when you're faced with the confusion of this world, all these opinions on the internet, 00:34:32.819 --> 00:34:41.159 all these arguments, come back to Christ and His offer of life. And even when you are ridiculed, 00:34:41.599 --> 00:34:47.159 and you hear the insults that people may make about Christianity, about those who really believe 00:34:47.159 --> 00:34:54.039 the Bible and believe the Bible and all that Christ has said, come back to what the officers said in verse 46. 00:34:54.039 --> 00:35:03.440 I think it's beautiful. No one has ever spoken like this man. No one has ever spoken like Jesus. He's given us 00:35:03.440 --> 00:35:12.440 the words of life. And so continue to come to Him and trust in Him and find life in His name.
