heart-wrenching words. 00:00:11.620 --> 00:00:15.939 Reading Hosea takes us back to a time where the relationship between God 00:00:15.939 --> 00:00:20.160 and his people Israel was full of sorrow and grief. 00:00:21.100 --> 00:00:27.260 You can't help but grieve over the way the people of Israel treated Yahweh, their God. 00:00:27.260 --> 00:00:34.439 And you can't help but mourn over the anguish in God's own heart because of Israel. 00:00:35.240 --> 00:00:37.560 They were faithless people in that day. 00:00:38.219 --> 00:00:40.200 No longer loyal to their God. 00:00:41.480 --> 00:00:41.859 Wicked. 00:00:43.040 --> 00:00:43.460 Corrupt. 00:00:44.600 --> 00:00:46.660 It really is a heart-wrenching book of the Bible. 00:00:47.600 --> 00:00:56.859 And it is hard to listen as God promises to punish the sins of Israel again and again and again through Hosea. 00:00:58.259 --> 00:01:06.640 Reading of this reminded me of Alive and how we've been journeying with the kids through the first books of the Bible, 00:01:06.900 --> 00:01:08.579 the beginnings of the story of Israel. 00:01:09.560 --> 00:01:12.140 And there, too, we saw some pretty heart-wrenching moments. 00:01:12.140 --> 00:01:18.400 We saw God's anger and wrath flare up against the people of Israel because of their sins. 00:01:19.599 --> 00:01:26.780 We heard God tell Moses on more than one occasion to stand aside so that he might destroy the people of Israel. 00:01:26.780 --> 00:01:38.439 And it might be tempting as we hear and read things like these to come to the conclusion that God is mostly just angry with us. 00:01:38.439 --> 00:01:44.140 Or to come to the conclusion that God is mainly just disappointed with us. 00:01:45.439 --> 00:01:50.000 Or to come to the conclusion that God doesn't really love us. 00:01:50.439 --> 00:01:52.819 He just kind of puts up with us. 00:01:52.819 --> 00:02:03.399 Of course, naturally, we don't like to hear about God punishing sinful people like us. 00:02:03.400 --> 00:02:14.659 And there's a lot of that in the Old Testament where God spoke these heart-wrenching words of judgment. 00:02:14.659 --> 00:02:23.819 And sometimes we might be tempted to try and separate the God of the Old Testament from the God of the New Testament. 00:02:24.019 --> 00:02:27.879 Some have commented here and there that they really like Jesus. 00:02:29.300 --> 00:02:36.780 Gentle, loving, gracious, lowly, humble Jesus. 00:02:37.300 --> 00:02:38.900 The one who died for us. 00:02:39.900 --> 00:02:43.120 But they don't really much like the God of the Old Testament. 00:02:43.120 --> 00:02:44.340 He's too angry. 00:02:44.920 --> 00:02:45.960 Too wrathful. 00:02:46.980 --> 00:02:51.140 Look at what he did to the people of Israel when they grumbled and complained, some will say. 00:02:51.400 --> 00:02:55.780 He was angry and he struck many of them down with fire and plague and disaster. 00:02:58.219 --> 00:03:01.540 But this kind of thinking really falls short of reality. 00:03:02.140 --> 00:03:05.640 As we've been seeing in the Gospel of John over the past weeks and months, 00:03:05.900 --> 00:03:07.939 there's really no way around it. 00:03:08.180 --> 00:03:10.599 There is no such division in the Bible. 00:03:10.599 --> 00:03:14.799 The God of the Old Testament is the God of the New Testament. 00:03:16.019 --> 00:03:19.579 Who is Jesus referring to when he speaks of his Father? 00:03:20.139 --> 00:03:21.879 The one who sent him into the world. 00:03:23.039 --> 00:03:26.539 It's none other than Yahweh, the Lord, the God of the Old Testament. 00:03:27.979 --> 00:03:32.759 And Jesus does not in the least distance himself from the God of the Old Testament. 00:03:32.759 --> 00:03:34.939 In fact, it's the opposite. 00:03:37.079 --> 00:03:40.439 He says, I and the Father are one. 00:03:41.739 --> 00:03:43.959 As we'll see in a couple weeks here, he says, 00:03:44.280 --> 00:03:47.079 How can you say, show me the Father? 00:03:47.579 --> 00:03:51.259 If you've seen me, you've seen the Father. 00:03:51.259 --> 00:03:54.139 In other words, Jesus is saying, 00:03:54.359 --> 00:04:00.319 I am Yahweh, the God of the Old Testament, here in flesh, walking among you. 00:04:01.879 --> 00:04:02.879 He is in me. 00:04:03.639 --> 00:04:04.719 I am in him. 00:04:04.979 --> 00:04:05.639 We are one. 00:04:06.120 --> 00:04:09.500 When you look at me, you see him, says Jesus. 00:04:10.439 --> 00:04:15.859 So there is no divide between the God of the Old Testament and the God of the New Testament. 00:04:15.860 --> 00:04:21.080 Everything about who God is in the Old Testament is true about God in the New Testament. 00:04:21.800 --> 00:04:28.340 And everything about who Jesus is in the New Testament reflects who the God of the Old Testament really is. 00:04:29.620 --> 00:04:37.819 You might think, well, how come Jesus doesn't seem as angry and wrathful as God does in the Old Testament? 00:04:39.080 --> 00:04:43.180 Well, let me remind you that Jesus did on occasion get very angry. 00:04:43.180 --> 00:04:51.560 At the temple courts, he was angry with a righteous anger at how they had turned the house of God into a marketplace. 00:04:53.000 --> 00:04:57.220 He showed the same sort of righteous anger against the Pharisees, 00:04:57.600 --> 00:05:05.399 those corrupt and hypocritical leaders who were abusing and taking advantage of the people while putting on a religious facade. 00:05:05.399 --> 00:05:14.899 And it is true that we never see Jesus punish or bring judgment like God did in the Old Testament. 00:05:15.899 --> 00:05:21.399 But that's because there are two stages to the work of Jesus here on earth. 00:05:21.759 --> 00:05:25.560 As we heard earlier in John's Gospel, chapter 3, verse 17, 00:05:25.560 --> 00:05:31.819 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. 00:05:32.959 --> 00:05:34.720 And we've talked about this. 00:05:34.819 --> 00:05:37.759 Jesus' first coming was a rescue mission. 00:05:38.060 --> 00:05:39.360 It's all about redemption. 00:05:39.600 --> 00:05:40.759 It's about saving us. 00:05:41.519 --> 00:05:47.600 But Jesus' second coming will include punishment and judgment for the wicked, 00:05:48.120 --> 00:05:50.720 just like God did in the Old Testament. 00:05:50.720 --> 00:05:57.100 Consider 2 Thessalonians 1, verse 6. 00:05:57.980 --> 00:05:58.880 It says there, 00:05:58.980 --> 00:05:59.880 God is just. 00:06:00.960 --> 00:06:03.920 He will pay back trouble to those who trouble you 00:06:03.920 --> 00:06:08.200 and give relief to you who are troubled and to us as well. 00:06:09.160 --> 00:06:15.660 This will happen when the Lord Jesus is revealed from heaven in blazing fire with his powerful angels. 00:06:15.660 --> 00:06:22.800 He will punish those who do not know God and do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 00:06:23.500 --> 00:06:28.800 So yes, Jesus will punish and will bring judgment, just like God did in the Old Testament. 00:06:29.520 --> 00:06:33.760 These two realities of who God is cannot be separated. 00:06:34.879 --> 00:06:36.360 God is love. 00:06:37.120 --> our hearts, we know this is true. 00:07:00.359 --> 00:07:02.199 We know that this is who God is. 00:07:02.459 --> 00:07:09.299 And yet we still struggle to see the love that God has for us. your attention to one of the places in the Old Testament. 00:07:22.620 --> 00:07:29.300 Where we see so clearly God's love for sinners like you and me. 00:07:29.840 --> 00:07:31.879 Hosea chapter 11. 00:07:32.840 --> 00:07:34.319 Verse 1. 00:07:34.319 --> 00:07:40.659 This is God speaking through Hosea. 00:07:41.079 --> 00:07:41.459 He says, 00:07:41.459 --> 00:07:44.519 When Israel was a child, I loved him. 00:07:45.239 --> 00:07:47.399 And out of Egypt I called my son. 00:07:48.719 --> 00:07:52.479 But the more they were called, the more they went away from me. 00:07:53.259 --> 00:07:57.919 They sacrificed to the balls and they burned incense to images. 00:07:57.920 --> 00:08:03.819 When Israel was a child, I loved him. 00:08:04.840 --> 00:08:06.060 Hear those words. 00:08:06.680 --> 00:08:09.439 We're reminded again here of the story of Jacob. 00:08:09.759 --> 00:08:12.960 One of the stories that we covered in Alive this past year. 00:08:13.100 --> 00:08:16.720 Jacob, he was reaffirmed his covenant and his promise to Jacob. 00:08:44.360 --> 00:08:48.960 And so not only Israel, the man, was precious to God. 00:08:49.019 --> 00:08:50.019 But Israel, the people. 00:08:50.879 00:09:55.299 --> 00:09:56.299 Ephraim was one of the sons of Joseph. 00:09:56.299 --> 00:09:57.039 But listen to this. 00:09:57.099 --> 00:09:59.659 It was I who taught Ephraim to walk. 00:10:01.059 --> 00:10:02.599 Taking them by the arms. 00:10:04.120 --> 00:10:06.639 But they did not realize it was I who healed them. 00:10:07.099 --> 00:10:09.379 I led them with cords of human kindness. give you up, Ephraim? 00:15:57.960 --> 00:16:00.660 How can I hand you over, Israel? 00:16:02.440 --> 00:16:04.800 Do you hear the reluctance in the heart of God 00:16:04.800 --> 00:16:10.120 to bring punishment on his dear children of Israel? 00:16:11.840 --> 00:16:15.000 It's like he's saying, I don't want to give you up. 00:16:15.600 --> 00:16:17.580 I don't want to hand you over to your enemies. 00:16:17.580 --> 00:16:22.139 How can I treat you like Adma? 00:16:22.240 --> 00:16:23.900 How can I make you like Zeboiim? 00:16:25.540 --> 00:16:28.520 Adma and Zeboiim were two of the cities that God laid waste 00:16:28.520 --> 00:16:33.639 and utterly destroyed back in the days when he wiped out Sodom and Gomorrah 00:16:33.639 --> 00:16:36.840 because of their sin and wickedness. 00:16:36.840 --> 00:16:43.320 It's like God is saying, I don't want to do that to you, dear Israel. 00:16:46.040 --> 00:16:48.180 But the problem here is that they deserve it. 00:16:50.680 --> 00:16:52.820 These people of Israel, here and now, 00:16:52.820 --> 00:16:55.280 are as deserving of punishment and judgment 00:16:55.280 --> 00:16:59.420 as Adma and Zeboiim were in the days when God punished them. 00:17:00.820 --> 00:17:04.380 But God says here, it would break my heart 00:17:04.380 --> 00:17:09.000 to bring justice upon you like that, my son, 00:17:10.620 --> 00:17:13.020 my children, Israel. 00:17:14.620 --> 00:17:18.460 My heart is changed within me, says the Lord. 00:17:19.220 --> 00:17:21.620 All my compassion is aroused. 00:17:23.440 --> 00:17:25.040 And in God's 00:17:37.899 not to allow 00:17:37.899 --> 00:17:41.639 the cities of Ephraim to be destroyed again. 00:17:46.720 --> 00:17:48.940 As I was reflecting on these words, 00:17:49.759 --> 00:17:52.319 I couldn't help but notice, 00:17:52.460 --> 00:17:54.759 they really give us a window into the heart of God. 00:17:57.319 --> 00:17:58.299 I mean, look at this, 00:17:58.379 --> 00:18:00.879 both in verse 8 and in verse 9. 00:18:00.880 --> 00:18:01.700 And in verse 9, 00:18:01.780 --> 00:18:04.300 I will not carry out my fierce anger. 00:18:05.400 --> 00:18:05.860 Why? 00:18:07.240 -->
