Luke chapter 23 verse 34. 00:00:18.440 --> 00:00:18.440 00:00:30.000 --> 00:00:50.100 A few years ago there was an 18 year old young man called Brant Jean who was in the witness box at the trial of the individual who murdered his brother. 00:00:50.100 --> 00:01:05.740 The woman was a lady called Amber Geigor. She was an ex-police woman and she found Brant's brother in what she thought was her flat and she shot him dead. 00:01:06.859 --> 00:01:18.319 He was actually in his own flat and for whatever reason that they couldn't quite ascertain she had been so disorientated she thought that he was in her flat and she shot him dead. 00:01:18.319 --> 00:01:29.459 It was what Brant Jean did during his time on the witness stand that means we have heard about his actions. 00:01:30.459 --> 00:01:40.919 So in the witness books he addressed directly this young woman whose life was now forever going to be changed for what she did. 00:01:41.379 --> 00:01:48.000 And he addressed her with regard to wanting the very best for her. 00:01:48.319 --> 00:01:54.179 And knowing that his murdered brother would want the very best for her. 00:01:54.819 --> 00:02:03.659 He explained to her that the very best for her would be to know Jesus Christ as her own personal saviour. 00:02:03.659 --> 00:02:26.259 Now this was highly unusual as he explained what was taking place but he then turned to the judge and he asked the judge for permission to come out of the witness box and to go and hug the accused to show that he really had forgiven her for murdering his brother. 00:02:26.259 --> 00:02:45.919 And the judge agreed and so Brant Jean went and he hugged this accused young woman and it was the image of him hugging her as a sign of his forgiveness toward her that was being around the US and actually around the world. 00:02:45.919 --> 00:02:52.719 And so when we live in a culture where we have this clamour to cancel people. 00:02:53.339 --> 00:02:55.419 Where we want people punished. 00:02:56.079 --> 00:02:58.639 We want people sidelined. 00:02:59.219 --> 00:03:02.099 We want people to pay the penalty for the wrongs that they've done. 00:03:02.179 --> 00:03:06.819 Because in our generation there always has to be somebody who has to pay the price isn't there. 00:03:06.819 --> 00:03:14.419 But in such a culture it's quite remarkable just how genuine forgiveness shines out. 00:03:15.560 --> 00:03:19.139 Now I don't know how you react to hearing a story about that. 00:03:19.780 --> 00:03:21.799 In one sense it's lovely to hear. 00:03:22.000 --> 00:03:22.739 It's remarkable. 00:03:22.740 --> 00:03:29.920 But if you try and put yourself as I try and put myself into the shoes of this young man Brant Jean. 00:03:30.379 --> 00:03:36.820 I wonder how we would react if somebody had done something barbaric to our family. 00:03:37.840 --> 00:03:43.640 Humanly speaking there's absolutely no chance that I would behave in the way he had behaved. 00:03:44.960 --> 00:03:50.700 Because if it's one of my loved ones then every instinct is to somehow seek revenge. 00:03:50.699 --> 00:03:52.599 Humanly speaking there's no chance. 00:03:53.679 --> 00:03:55.439 But spiritually speaking there is. 00:03:56.339 --> 00:04:01.639 Because spiritually speaking when we have a living connection with Jesus Christ. 00:04:02.299 --> 00:04:11.839 Then the way in which our lives are transformed by that means that we have a very different relationship with wrongdoing. 00:04:12.259 --> 00:04:14.359 And a very different relationship with forgiveness. 00:04:14.360 --> 00:04:22.520 So when this young 18 year old man was talking about her deepest need and her need to connect with Jesus. 00:04:22.759 --> 00:04:26.040 And how he wanted to show his forgiveness offer. 00:04:26.379 --> 00:04:30.460 Perhaps he had in mind the words of Jesus in Luke chapter 6. 00:04:30.819 --> 00:04:36.000 When Jesus says but love your enemies and to good to them and lend from them. 00:04:36.100 --> 00:04:37.960 Maybe he had in mind the teaching of Jesus. 00:04:37.959 --> 00:04:44.159 Maybe he had in mind however the example of Jesus that we find here. 00:04:44.859 --> 00:04:53.560 Because the example of Jesus in this episode is that Jesus himself is on the receiving end of barbaric treatment. 00:04:53.560 --> 00:04:57.839 By this stage of verse 34. 00:04:58.459 --> 00:05:10.439 Jesus is his body is processing the impact of these large iron nails being hammered through his wrists and his feet. 00:05:10.899 --> 00:05:16.879 Severing the nerves and all of the pain signals that are going from different parts of his body. 00:05:17.379 --> 00:05:22.399 And flooding to his brain so that his brain realizes what's taking place. 00:05:22.399 --> 00:05:31.839 He's in the middle of beginning to endure some of the physical torture that crucifixion involves. 00:05:32.319 --> 00:05:40.679 Not simply is it that his nerves will have been torn to shreds through these nails that were used. 00:05:40.779 --> 00:05:43.659 But then he's now feeling the impact of gravity. 00:05:44.379 --> 00:05:47.199 Gravity that he himself called into existence. 00:05:47.199 --> 00:05:53.579 As it pulls down upon his joints and muscles. 00:05:54.240 --> 00:06:01.240 Potentially dislocating some of them as he tries to push himself up and push himself out to somehow be able to breathe. 00:06:01.939 --> 00:06:03.019 Jesus is here. 00:06:03.120 --> 00:06:06.180 The one who was present at the very dawn of time. 00:06:06.699 --> 00:06:15.199 The one who's the power of whose word actually put into existence all that we can see and hear and feel and touch and smell. 00:06:15.199 --> 00:06:21.339 He is the one on the end of this horrendous treatment. 00:06:22.000 --> 00:06:29.560 If there was ever in one sense an injustice perpetrated in this world it was on this occasion. 00:06:30.159 --> 00:06:33.019 And so what does Jesus do? 00:06:33.019 --> 00:06:43.959 He asks his heavenly father to forgive those soldiers who are doing their job and the others implicated. 00:06:44.339 --> 00:06:47.819 Because they don't appreciate what they've done. 00:06:48.599 --> 00:06:49.899 Father forgive them. 00:06:49.899 --> 00:06:55.939 And so this morning I want us to pause over these words. 00:06:56.799 --> 00:07:10.060 And to hopefully have our own souls warmed as we think of the forgiveness that is available for us through Jesus Christ and all that he has done. 00:07:10.060 --> 00:07:17.879 Those of you who enjoy novels or drama series or whatever movies will know that there is one. 00:07:18.139 --> 00:07:22.660 There's a standard technique amongst many techniques that the scriptwriters have. 00:07:23.000 --> 00:07:29.100 About placing characters in circumstances that really doesn't fit for them. 00:07:29.319 --> 00:07:30.620 So it tends to go in one of two ways. 00:07:30.620 --> 00:07:39.180 Either you have the spoiled rich kid who is put into a situation where they have to slum it with the underclass. 00:07:39.660 --> 00:07:40.780 Or the opposite. 00:07:40.959 --> 00:07:47.220 You've got the hardened tough nut who is now mixing it with the rich and the powerful and influential. 00:07:47.660 --> 00:07:51.620 And at some point within the plot, usually reasonably near the start, the words, 00:07:51.920 --> 00:07:54.660 You don't belong here, are communicated. 00:07:54.660 --> 00:07:57.840 Now Jesus was in neither of these categories. 00:07:58.600 --> 00:08:06.600 But there was a very real sense in which he did not belong in this scene that we have just read about here at Calvary. 00:08:06.700 --> 00:08:10.040 The scene that was unfolding at Golgotha. 00:08:10.640 --> 00:08:15.160 He, in that one sense, he didn't belong in that environment. 00:08:15.980 --> 00:08:24.300 Now I see this because we have possibly sanitized what Golgotha, what Calvary was actually like. 00:08:24.660 --> 00:08:33.800 But if we actually were on the ground in that era, then it would be the type of place that we really would have to prepare to enter. 00:08:34.840 --> 00:08:44.600 It would be the type of place that we would have to get ready for the sights and the sounds and the smells of what was going to be evident. 00:08:44.860 --> 00:08:47.759 Because it genuinely was grotesque. 00:08:47.759 --> 00:08:57.319 If this had been made into a movie, the British Board of Film Control would be struggling to get a proper rating for this movie. 00:08:57.399 --> 00:09:03.480 Because an 18 rating wouldn't be enough because some of the sights that would be seen. 00:09:04.480 --> 00:09:08.879 The sights of the brutality of the crucifixion process. 00:09:09.740 --> 00:09:11.259 The sights of nakedness. 00:09:11.360 --> 00:09:12.580 The sights of shame. 00:09:12.580 --> 00:09:22.180 But more than that, it wouldn't simply be the sights that would be placing the events that would unfold at Calvary into a category all of its own. 00:09:22.340 --> 00:09:23.759 It would even be the sounds. 00:09:25.420 --> 00:09:27.540 The sounds of what was taking place. 00:09:27.539 --> 00:09:31.719 The sounds of screams. 00:09:31.719 --> 00:09:34.120 Of sobbing. 00:09:35.299 --> 00:09:36.360 Of groaning. 00:09:37.379 --> 00:09:42.179 Of the abuse that would be thrown at those being crucified by passers-by. 00:09:43.059 --> 00:09:44.899 The sights were graphic. 00:09:45.759 --> 00:09:47.199 The sounds would be haunting. 00:09:48.319 --> 00:09:49.480 And the smells. 00:09:49.480 --> 00:09:54.779 Well, the smells would be just catching in your throat. 00:09:55.639 --> 00:09:59.100 It would be the type of place that you would be holding your breath. 00:09:59.200 --> 00:10:02.100 You'd be breathing out your mouth rather than out your nose. 00:10:02.240 --> 00:10:05.300 Because you don't want to inhale the noxious smell. 00:10:05.399 --> 00:10:08.659 It's a place where there's constant burning taking place. 00:10:09.200 --> 00:10:11.440 Where the refuge of the city is being burnt. 00:10:11.440 --> 00:10:16.759 But on top of that, you've got human remains that are being burnt within that also. 00:10:16.759 --> 00:10:26.480 Because frequently those who had been crucified, once parts of them had been eaten by vultures, the rest is just thrown into gaps. 00:10:26.580 --> 00:10:28.299 And then eventually it's going to be burned. 00:10:28.519 --> 00:10:39.139 And so you think if there is ever a location that the Lord of glory ought not to be in, it is in that location. 00:10:39.639 --> 00:10:43.240 We could turn around and say to Jesus, you really don't belong here. 00:10:43.240 --> 00:10:55.120 And I want to contrast that image as it is portrayed for us in our minds with how very different it was at the start of the world. 00:10:56.080 --> 00:11:04.299 I want to contrast just the grotesque brutality and awful horror of what takes place at Calvary. 00:11:04.299 --> 00:11:10.559 With what we imagine from what the Bible teaches us, the Garden of Eden to be. 00:11:11.359 --> 00:11:15.740 A place that would be so lush. 00:11:16.740 --> 00:11:19.659 A place that would be so beautiful. 00:11:20.439 --> 00:11:22.500 The variety of colour. 00:11:23.559 --> 00:11:31.819 The aroma coming from the various different flowers and fauna, whatever else would be there. 00:11:31.820 --> 00:11:40.920 The place where the Lord God would walk in the cool of the day with the pinnacle of his creative work. 00:11:41.920 --> 00:11:47.640 The place that is ultimately the place that we've been longing for ever since. 00:11:47.879 --> 00:11:53.100 But that place of beauty, that place of delight, that place of rest. 00:11:53.820 --> 00:11:58.240 That place of being in the very near, close presence of God. 00:11:58.240 --> 00:12:05.159 And can you contrast anything greater than the place of the skull? 00:12:06.259 --> 00:12:07.159 The very mention. 00:12:07.700 --> 00:12:09.019 The place of the skull. 00:12:09.700 --> 00:12:16.039 It implies that connection, does it not, with the curse that sin has brought into this very world. 00:12:16.039 --> 00:12:27.059 And the place of the skull is contrasted with the place of beauty that God created for humanity to inhabit. 00:12:27.480 --> 00:12:28.539 And to enjoy. 00:12:28.719 --> 00:12:29.959 And to enjoy him. 00:12:30.719 --> 00:12:35.779 And so where the Lord God once walked in the cool of the day. 00:12:36.519 --> 00:12:37.899 Here you have the Lord of we forget just how brutal even that was. 00:13:17.819 --> 00:13:20.659 Flogging used to have leather ropes. 00:13:20.859 --> 00:13:22.439 And it used to have bits of bone. 00:13:23.019 --> 00:13:24.619 And other sharp objects in it. 00:13:24.620 --> 00:13:28.039 And it would go diagonally across the back of the person being flogged. 00:13:28.100 --> 00:13:29.519 And the bits would dig into their skin. 00:13:29.980 --> 00:13:31.240 And then it would be yanked. 00:13:31.560 --> 00:13:32.980 So that the skin would be ripped. 00:13:33.399 --> 00:13:36.179 And it would go over one side 00:13:53.560 He has had abuse. 00:13:53.559 --> 00:13:55.859 He has been flogged. 00:13:56.599 --> 00:14:02.739 And now he's been asked to carry this piece of wood upon which he himself is going to be impaled. 00:14:03.299 --> 00:14:06.879 And his strength is almost non-existent. 00:14:07.419 --> 00:14:09.639 And so he is the Lord of Glory. 00:14:10.459 --> 00:14:14.559 The one who would have walked in the cool of the day. 00:14:14.959 --> 00:14:17.059 As the Lord God walked in the cool of the day with Adam and Eve. 00:14:17.299 --> 00:14:19.239 Here you have the Lord of Glory now stumbling. 00:14:19.799 --> 00:14:23.459 But his alertness is not in question, however. 00:14:23.559 --> 00:14:28.799 We note that from the intervening section from verse 27 onwards. 00:14:28.979 --> 00:14:36.439 As he turns and he addresses those almost professional mourners who had gathered. 00:14:36.440 --> 00:14:42.460 And who were expressing their sorrow over what was unfolding. 00:14:43.580 00:15:54.220 That has accompanied him through his ministry. 00:15:54.220 --> 00:15:58.580 On multiple occasions he spoke about his father being with him. 00:15:58.840 --> 00:16:01.540 And him seeking to do his father's will. 00:16:02.100 --> 00:16:05.000 And him saying the words that the father has given him to say. 00:16:05.519 --> 00:16:07.279 And him reminding people that he's not alone. 00:16:07.360 --> 00:16:08.399 That the father is with him. 00:16:08.860 --> 00:16:11.540 Here he is at the start of his time on the cross. 00:16:11.740 --> 00:16:15.300 And he is aware that the
