called to do quite an amazing thing, God has called 00:00:33.299 --> 00:00:40.060 Nehemiah to do two things at the same time, to physically lead in the rebuilding of God's 00:00:40.060 --> 00:00:45.820 city and to also lead in the spiritual rebuilding of God's people. 00:00:45.980 --> 00:00:48.560 Both are in need of renovation. 00:00:48.980 --> 00:00:53.899 And we find ourselves in a similar place in the life of our church here at Church of the 00:00:53.899 --> 00:00:54.179 Advent. 00:00:54.179 --> 00:01:00.539 We are physically renovating a building at 5th and Q Northwest so that it can become 00:01:00.539 --> 00:01:05.959 a home for us, a home for worship and spiritual formation and ministry to the wider community. 00:01:06.640 --> 00:01:11.819 And at the same time, this is a year of spiritual renovation and renewal. 00:01:12.000 --> 00:01:15.719 We as a community are preparing for this next season of life. 00:01:16.180 --> 00:01:21.560 We've been through a lot of 00:01:30.659 And we're looking ahead and asking what kind of, not only what kind of building do we hope 00:01:30.659 --> 00:01:34.359 to inhabit, but what kind of people will we be when we inhabit 00:01:42.180 So we're seeing what we can learn from Nehemiah. 00:01:42.599 --> 00:01:44.719 And here's the thing that we're going to look at this week. 00:01:44.719 --> 00:01:50.120 Nehemiah is often celebrated as an example of effective leadership. 00:01:51.239 --> 00:01:56.560 And to some extent that's true, although as we will see, he is by no means perfect. 00:01:58.560 --> 00:02:04.640 People often overlook what I believe is the most important quality in Nehemiah, which is 00:02:04.640 --> 00:02:05.900 not his leadership style. 00:02:05.900 --> 00:02:08.360 It's his prayer life. 00:02:09.420 --> 00:02:14.800 It's the fact that Nehemiah was a man of prayer above everything else. 00:02:14.860 --> 00:02:20.500 In fact, we have nine recorded prayers from Nehemiah in this book. 00:02:21.180 --> 00:02:25.580 And so we're going to be looking at that first prayer that he prays in the opening verses 00:02:25.580 --> 00:02:27.060 this morning. 00:02:27.180 --> 00:02:29.340 But let me ask you this question as we dive into this. 00:02:29.980 --> 00:02:34.800 How would you answer someone if they were to ask you, how is your prayer life? 00:02:35.900 --> 00:02:36.980 What would love the writer Anne Lamott. 00:02:44.280 --> 00:02:45.340 I love her honesty. 00:02:45.900 --> 00:02:47.020 And she has a saying. 00:02:47.159 --> 00:02:52.540 She says, the two best prayers I know are help me, help me, help me, and thank you, thank 00:02:52.540 --> 00:02:53.000 you, thank you. 00:02:53.759 --> 00:02:58.640 And I think probably for many of us, that would encapsulate our prayer life, right? 00:02:58.640 --> 00:03:03.740 You get to a point where you're sort of desperate and all else has failed. 00:03:03.740 --> 00:03:06.120 And so you're crying out to God, help me, help me, help me do something. 00:03:06.800 --> 00:03:10.080 And then times when you feel like God comes through, you say, thank you, thank you, thank 00:03:10.080 --> 00:03:10.700 you, you know. 00:03:11.939 --> 00:03:13.159 Not so with Nehemiah. 00:03:14.439 --> 00:03:16.740 Nehemiah has a rich prayer life. 00:03:16.800 --> 00:03:22.320 And we see here in chapter one that the way Nehemiah prays has a distinct shape to it. 00:03:22.379 --> 00:03:27.640 There are distinct elements to his prayer that, as I reflect on my own prayer life, I think 00:03:27.640 --> 00:03:32.360 are often missing from my spontaneous prayers when I pray to the Lord. 00:03:32.360 --> 00:03:38.060 And this is the same general shape that we see in the Lord's prayer that Jesus explicitly 00:03:38.060 --> 00:03:41.120 gives to us as his disciples to teach us how to pray. 00:03:41.920 --> 00:03:45.040 This is essentially going to be prayer 101. 00:03:45.720 --> 00:03:47.500 This is spring training for prayer. 00:03:47.620 --> 00:03:51.800 But if you're anything like me, this is something that I constantly need to come back to again 00:03:51.800 --> 00:03:52.920 and again and again. 00:03:53.400 --> 00:03:58.120 And what we're going to see in the shape of Nehemiah's prayer is a pattern that the people 00:03:58.120 --> 00:04:00.260 use different ways of remembering this. 00:04:00.259 --> 00:04:06.620 Often you come across this when people use the acronym ACTS, A-C-T-S. 00:04:07.139 --> 00:04:11.560 That as we look at Nehemiah's prayer, we see four distinct elements. 00:04:11.719 --> 00:04:17.019 Adoration, confession, thanksgiving, and then finally supplication. 00:04:17.120 --> 00:04:18.339 A-C-T-S. 00:04:18.740 --> 00:04:19.860 And so we're going to look at this. 00:04:20.319 --> 00:04:23.939 And I want to say right off the bat, this is not a magic formula. 00:04:23.939 --> 00:04:27.699 This is not something that we have to follow rigidly. 00:04:29.620 --> 00:04:35.000 On the other hand, if we regularly include all of these elements in our prayer life, 00:04:35.519 --> 00:04:39.819 our prayer will not only have the potential to change the world, but it will actually have 00:04:39.819 --> 00:04:41.620 the power to change us. 00:04:42.360 --> 00:04:43.500 So let's look at this. 00:04:43.500 --> 00:04:46.000 And we're going to ask God to help us as we open His Word together. 00:04:47.879 --> 00:04:55.680 Lord, we come to You in prayer knowing that You desire and You delight to converse with us. 00:04:56.019 --> 00:05:04.139 Lord, that You have spoken through Your Word and Spirit, and You invite us to respond to You, 00:05:04.459 --> 00:05:04.680 Lord. 00:05:04.680 --> 00:05:06.560 And You delight when we come to You. 00:05:06.680 --> 00:05:08.199 You delight when we listen to You. 00:05:08.400 --> 00:05:12.180 You delight when we bring our supplications to You, Lord. 00:05:12.360 --> 00:05:18.439 And so even as we pray, we know that You're a God who above all desires a 00:05:47.660 --> 00:05:47.960 Amen. 00:05:49.280 --> 00:05:57.540 So first of all, as we look at Nehemiah, we see that just the context of this is that 00:05:57.540 --> 00:06:00.680 Nehemiah has just heard devastating news. 00:06:00.680 --> 00:06:04.420 He's just heard news that God's city lies in ruins. 00:06:04.800 --> 00:06:07.920 He's just heard that God's people are destitute. 00:06:08.379 --> 00:06:09.860 And it breaks his heart. 00:06:10.300 --> 00:06:14.939 And it breaks his heart so much that it says he falls to the ground and he weeps. 00:06:16.480 --> 00:06:20.000 And the first thing he does is to pray. 00:06:20.340 --> 00:06:24.160 I mean, it's worth noting that for Nehemiah, prayer is a reflex. 00:06:24.819 --> 00:06:26.519 It's a natural instinct. 00:06:26.519 --> 00:06:31.519 He falls to the ground and he weeps, and what comes out of his mouth is prayer. 00:06:32.620 --> 00:06:35.719 Now look at where he begins when he prays. 00:06:35.959 --> 00:06:43.079 If something this bad happened in my life, if I got the kind of news that made me immediately 00:06:43.079 --> 00:06:48.579 collapse to the ground and start weeping, my first impulse, to be totally honest, would 00:06:48.579 --> 00:06:51.099 probably be to say to God, how could you? 00:06:52.240 --> 00:06:53.159 How dare you? 00:06:54.919 --> 00:06:55.859 Where were you? 00:06:56.800 --> 00:06:57.579 Why me? 00:06:57.740 --> 00:06:58.279 Why this? 00:06:58.399 --> 00:06:58.919 Why now? 00:06:59.000 --> 00:07:04.199 Those are the kinds of prayers that would reflexively come out of my mouth, along with a whole lot 00:07:04.199 --> 00:07:04.779 of other stuff. 00:07:04.779 --> 00:07:13.419 Nehemiah pauses long enough to shift his attention away from the crisis, away from the pressing 00:07:13.419 --> 00:07:20.079 issues, away from himself, away from his needs, which are very real, and he shifts his attention 00:07:20.079 --> 00:07:22.459 for a moment just to focus on God himself. 00:07:23.819 --> 00:07:27.039 He begins by praising God for his character. 00:07:27.619 --> 00:07:33.479 He's just heard horrible news, and yet he begins by praising God for his character and 00:07:33.480 --> 00:07:34.180 his faithfulness. 00:07:34.240 --> 00:07:40.379 He says in verse 5, O Lord, God of heaven, the great and awesome God who keeps covenant 00:07:40.379 --> 00:07:44.620 and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments. 00:07:45.860 --> 00:07:53.660 See, this is so important because it immediately grounds prayer in what is true and real. 00:07:55.160 --> 00:07:59.819 Nehemiah is beginning, he's grounding his prayer in what is true and real. 00:07:59.819 --> 00:08:07.180 By pausing to reflect on who God is, what that does when we do that is by pausing to reflect 00:08:07.180 --> 00:08:13.420 on who God is, it immediately reminds us that God is God and I am not. 00:08:14.360 --> 00:08:19.019 I'm immediately saying, you're God and I'm not God. 00:08:20.120 --> 00:08:22.659 You're the great one, not me. 00:08:22.660 --> 00:08:26.860 You're the awesome one, not me. 00:08:27.920 --> 00:08:30.280 You're the one who keeps your promises. 00:08:31.080 --> 00:08:32.940 I don't always keep my promises. 00:08:34.000 --> 00:08:38.019 You're the one whose love remains constant and steadfast. 00:08:38.399 --> 00:08:41.519 My love can be fickle and conditional. 00:08:42.860 --> 00:08:49.879 It reminds us that we're not the ones here to judge what can happen or should happen. 00:08:49.879 --> 00:08:53.879 It reminds us that we're entirely dependent on him. 00:08:54.860 --> 00:08:57.539 It immediately grounds his prayer in what is true and real. 00:08:57.860 --> 00:09:03.139 It reminds us of something that is extremely important to remember when we face crisis. 00:09:04.320 --> 00:09:08.879 And that is that we can't always understand God's motives. 00:09:09.360 --> 00:09:12.679 We will not always be able to understand God's motives. 00:09:13.620 --> 00:09:15.899 But we can always trust God's character. 00:09:15.899 --> 00:09:22.919 We're not always going to understand God's motives, but we can always trust his character. 00:09:25.779 --> 00:09:35.319 And a relationship with God based on faith doesn't ultimately depend on our ability to understand a God whose ways are higher than our ways. 00:09:35.320 --> 00:09:42.040 It hinges on whether or not we trust him, even when we don't understand the why. 00:09:43.120 --> 00:09:45.620 And Nehemiah, that's where he starts his prayer. 00:09:46.300 --> 00:09:54.620 And I've often found that when I'm feeling anxious about something, if I'm sort of getting worked up and anxious and I'm feeling stressed, 00:09:54.620 --> 00:10:04.600 if I just spend a few minutes simply praising God for his attributes, that will immediately start to bring my anxiety down. 00:10:04.659 --> 00:10:11.419 Because a lot of our anxiety is simply the result of us trying to control things that we can't control. 00:10:12.320 --> 00:10:14.440 And we're trying to get a grip or a grasp. 00:10:14.519 --> 00:10:16.100 We're trying to manage this thing. 00:10:16.100 --> 00:10:17.879 And we can't. 00:10:17.940 --> 00:10:19.000 And it causes anxiety. 00:10:19.180 --> 00:10:24.580 And by pausing to remember who God is, it reminds us, oh, I don't have control over that. 00:10:24.639 --> 00:10:25.379 But God does. 00:10:26.040 --> 00:10:27.120 And I trust his character. 00:10:29.340 --> 00:10:38.100 But even if there were no tangible benefits to this, the more you grow in your faith, the more you grow in maturity, 00:10:38.200 --> 00:10:44.040 the more you realize that the point of prayer is not whether it benefits us or not. 00:10:44.039 --> 00:10:47.519 The point of prayer is connection with God. 00:10:48.579 --> 00:10:58.159 And what Nehemiah does is he begins in a place of praising God partly because he knows that God alone is worthy of our praise. 00:10:58.319 --> 00:11:00.059 God alone is worthy of our adoration. 00:11:01.319 --> 00:11:05.559 And if we were to do nothing in our lives but praise God and praise his attributes, 00:11:06.179 --> 00:11:09.339 we would only be giving God what he is owed. 00:11:09.340 --> 00:11:14.340 So this is the first element of Nehemiah's prayer. 00:11:14.660 --> 00:11:18.660 He pauses long enough to praise God for his character. 00:11:19.420 --> 00:11:20.639 And then what we see is this. 00:11:20.759 --> 00:11:30.980 After you spend time reflecting on God's character, that naturally then turns your attention to seeing your own character by contrast. 00:11:31.660 --> 00:11:31.800 Right? 00:11:31.879 --> 00:11:34.300 So Nehemiah's attention then turns to himself. 00:11:34.299 --> 00:11:38.979 And this is a principle that we come back to again and again and again in the Christian life. 00:11:39.059 --> 00:11:43.899 The more clearly we see God, the more clearly we are then able to see ourselves. 00:11:45.419 --> 00:11:52.000 That's why prayer is really one of the only entryways we have into true self-knowledge. 00:11:52.000 --> 00:12:01.000 Because prayer leads us into a kind of self-knowledge that is rooted in something objective and real. 00:12:01.879 --> 00:12:07.000 When we see who God is, we can then begin to see ourselves more clearly by contrast. 00:12:08.279 --> 00:12:17.100 So Nehemiah praises God for his faithfulness, and then he immediately becomes conscious of his own unfaithfulness and that of God's people. 00:12:17.100 --> 00:12:18.100 He says in verse 6, 00:12:18.100 --> 00:12:26.940 Let your ear be attentive and your eyes open to hear the prayer of your servant that I now pray before you day and night for the people of Israel, your servants, 00:12:27.540 --> 00:12:31.779 confessing the sins of the people of Israel, which we have sinned against you. 00:12:31.860 --> 00:12:33.940 Even I and my father's house have sinned. 00:12:34.220 --> 00:12:41.420 We have acted very corruptly against you and have not kept the commandments, the statutes, and the rules that you commanded by your servant Moses. 00:12:41.419 --> 00:12:49.299 Now what's striking about this, what's striking about his confession is that it is not only personal, 00:12:49.959 --> 00:12:53.559 I and my father's house have sinned, but it's also corporate. 00:12:54.699 --> 00:12:56.240 It's a corporate confession. 00:12:57.699 --> 00:13:00.959 He confesses on behalf of the sins of Israel. 00:13:02.279 --> 00:13:08.819 Now this is a concept that's been debated a lot recently because of the conversations around racial injustice in our country 00:13:08.820 --> 00:13:19.300 and to what extent do white Americans bear collective responsibility for the injustice that has been committed in our past and present. 00:13:19.680 --> 00:13:25.040 And what we've seen is that Western people in general have little to no concept of corporate evil. 00:13:26.120 --> 00:13:30.879 Western people, some actively oppose the idea of corporate evil. 00:13:31.560 --> 00:13:35.480 This is something that makes immediate sense in other cultures that are more communal. 00:13:35.480 --> 00:13:44.779 But we tend to be so individualistic in the West that we have a hard time with the notion that we might actually be held accountable for things that we didn't personally do wrong. 00:13:45.879 --> 00:13:50.800 The thing is though, this idea shows up again and again and again in Scripture. 00:13:50.980 --> 00:13:52.659 So it's something that we can't get around. 00:13:52.820 --> 00:13:54.500 We have to figure out how to make sense of it. 00:13:55.300 --> 00:14:01.340 In Joshua chapter 7, Achan sins by stealing things that don't belong to him. 00:14:01.340 --> 00:14:04.340 But his whole family is held responsible. 00:14:06.360 --> 00:14:08.560 In Daniel chapter 9, it goes further. 00:14:09.540 --> 00:14:17.080 Just like Nehemiah, Daniel repents not only on behalf of himself or even his family, but on behalf of his entire race, 00:14:17.420 --> 00:14:22.240 on behalf of the nation of Israel, his ancestors. 00:14:23.420 --> 00:14:26.759 In Romans chapter 5, Paul goes a step further. 00:14:26.759 --> 00:14:32.379 Paul goes way beyond the idea that you're responsible for what other members of your family have done. 00:14:32.919 --> 00:14:37.399 And he goes beyond the idea that you're responsible for your culture or ethnicity or your ancestors. 00:14:38.480 --> 00:14:45.200 The Apostle Paul says that we are responsible and we are condemned for what our first ancestors did. 00:14:46.220 --> 00:14:47.100 Adam and Eve. 00:14:47.919 --> 00:14:50.819 He says we're responsible and guilty because of their sin. 00:14:50.820 --> 00:14:55.160 By virtue, in other words, by virtue of being a member of the human race, 00:14:55.720 --> 00:14:59.100 we are responsible for things that we didn't individually do. 00:15:00.920 --> 00:15:03.280 And the point is, there's a couple points here. 00:15:03.340 --> 00:15:11.160 Number one, we are not simply the product of our individual choices made in a vacuum. 00:15:11.980 --> 00:15:15.200 As much as we would like to think that we are that independent, 00:15:15.560 --> 00:15:18.740 to a large degree, you and I, we are shaped by our family. 00:15:18.740 --> 00:15:21.080 We are shaped by our ethnicity. lines of lineage back to the 14 and 1500s. 00:15:56.399 --> 00:15:59.200 And I'm seeing all kinds of things, all kinds of people. 00:15:59.680 --> 00:16:04.519 And it's had me really reflecting on to what extent do I not know it, 00:16:04.600 --> 00:16:09.519 but to what extent am I a product of things that have happened over time 00:16:09.519 --> 00:16:12.180 in all of these families, dynamics, right? 00:16:12.179 --> 00:16:15.379 The places they occupied in society 00:16:15.379 --> 00:16:18.399 and how that impacted their children and their children and their children, right? 00:16:19.120 --> 00:16:20.620 And it's got me reflecting a lot on that. 00:16:20.679 --> 00:16:25.239 We are the product of our families and our ancestors to a great degree. 00:16:25.359 --> 00:16:27.039 We're a product of the culture that we live in 00:16:27.039 --> 00:16:29.000 and the place that we occupy within that culture. 00:16:30.120 --> 00:16:31.759 But we have to go beyond that. 00:16:32.139 --> 00:16:34.659 When we look at what the apostle Paul is really saying, 00:16:34.719 --> 00:16:37.599 he's saying, listen, we all live inside systems, 00:16:37.600 --> 00:16:41.800 within systems, within systems that are all corrupted by sin. 00:16:43.399 --> 00:16:45.580 And beyond family and culture, 00:16:45.740 --> 00:16:48.740 we are all guilty by virtue of being a part of the human race. 00:16:50.060 --> 00:16:51.740 We've inherited sin. 00:16:51.920 --> 00:16:56.019 We've inherited culpability for sin that on our own we can't deal with. 00:16:57.000 --> 00:16:59.519 And here's why this matters for our prayer life. 00:16:59.720 --> 00:17:02.040 If you spend time reflecting on that, 00:17:02.040 --> 00:17:06.640 it will deepen and it will intensify your confession of sin. time of confession, 00:17:23.019 --> 00:17:25.579 I am very tempted to only think of the things 00:17:25.579 --> 00:17:29.379 that I know I did wrong over the last maybe 24-hour period. 00:17:30.019 --> 00:17:31.659 And I will confess those things. 00:17:31.899 --> 00:17:36.039 But if I'm only confessing the things that I know I've done wrong, 00:17:36.039 --> 00:17:38.460 then that makes it much easier 00:17:38.460 --> 00:17:41.559 for me to continue believing what my heart wants to believe, 00:17:41.759 --> 00:17:43.799 which is that I'm mostly a good person, 00:17:44.200 --> 00:17:45.980 but I occasionally mess up. 00:17:47.180 --> 00:17:48.539 That's what I want to think. 00:17:48.639 --> 00:17:50.319 That's what I want you to think about me. 00:17:51.500 --> 00:17:52.779 But God --> 00:18:04.240 It is hardwired into me on a genetic level 00:18:04.240 --> 00:18:06.840 in a way that I cannot escape. 00:18:07.519 --> 00:18:10.980 It touches and it corrupts every aspect of my life, 00:18:11.100 --> 00:18:12.900 even when I think I'm at my best 00:18:12.900 --> 00:18:18.019 and my most altruistic, selfless, loving version of myself. 00:18:19.400 --> 00:18:21.900 Sin is warping that to some extent. 00:18:21.900 --> 00:18:21.980 Sin is warping that to some extent. 00:18:23.420 --> 00:18:25.560 That's the kind of confession we need. 00:18:26.300 --> 00:18:27.780 him favor 00:28:16.540 --> 00:28:17.940 so that this pagan king 00:28:17.940 --> 00:28:19.160 will let Nehemiah 00:28:19.160 --> 00:28:20.120 leave the court, 00:28:20.519 --> 00:28:21.720 take Persian money 00:28:21.720 --> 00:28:22.460 and resources, 00:28:22.700 --> 00:28:23.440 and go lead 00:28:23.440 --> 00:28:24.220 in the rebuilding 00:28:24.220 --> 00:28:26.019 of the city of
