surprisingly quick answer. 00:05:12.279 --> 00:05:15.199 He did not have to wait long to understand 00:05:15.199 --> 00:05:18.919 whether he was going to be able to avoid the cross 00:05:18.919 --> 00:05:21.759 because we saw at the very end of last week's passage, 00:05:22.139 --> 00:05:23.979 verses 41 and 42, 00:05:24.219 --> 00:05:27.819 that the soldiers are immediately coming for Jesus. 00:05:28.799 --> 00:05:31.439 Now, I told you last week, as I tell you from time to time, 00:05:31.759 --> 00:05:34.899 that I don't simply want you to learn things about the Bible, 00:05:34.919 --> 00:05:37.559 but I actually want you to learn how to read the Bible. 00:05:38.119 --> 00:05:41.019 You know, the old saying that you can give someone a fish 00:05:41.019 --> 00:05:42.019 and they'll eat for a day. 00:05:42.099 --> 00:05:45.519 You can teach them to fish and they'll be able to eat for a lifetime. 00:05:45.740 --> 00:05:46.819 That's my hope for you. 00:05:47.279 --> 00:05:49.799 And so I'll remind you of the same thing I told you last week, 00:05:49.799 --> 00:05:51.039 that when we're reading the Bible, 00:05:51.039 --> 00:05:54.379 we want to look for things that are repeated. 00:05:54.500 --> 00:05:57.139 We want to look for patterns and contrasts. 00:05:57.139 --> 00:05:58.779 We saw that last week, 00:05:58.779 --> 00:06:01.240 and we are not disappointed this week 00:06:01.240 --> 00:06:03.399 because the same thing repeats itself. 00:06:03.399 --> 00:06:07.379 Now, I'll pull back first to our passage that we looked at before. 00:06:07.899 --> 00:06:12.779 Verses 41 and 42 have the repetition that we want. 00:06:12.879 --> 00:06:13.539 Verse 41, 00:06:14.459 --> 00:06:17.859 the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 00:06:18.419 --> 00:06:19.139 Verse 42, 00:06:19.799 --> 00:06:23.399 see my betrayer is at hand. 00:06:24.359 --> 00:06:26.479 That does not stop though. 00:06:26.579 --> 00:06:29.379 We see it also in this passage this week. 00:06:29.379 --> 00:06:30.699 Verse 43, 00:06:31.980 --> 00:06:32.879 we see, 00:06:34.360 --> 00:06:34.879 excuse me, 00:06:34.920 --> 00:06:35.779 not verse 43, 00:06:36.379 --> 00:06:37.379 but verse 44, 00:06:37.519 --> 00:06:38.459 the same thing is repeated. 00:06:38.600 --> 00:06:42.219 Now the betrayer had given them a sign. 00:06:43.620 --> 00:06:46.279 Mark means to underscore for us 00:06:46.279 --> 00:06:49.199 over and over again, 00:06:50.120 --> 00:06:51.699 in case we miss it, 00:06:52.439 --> 00:06:54.379 Jesus is being betrayed. 00:06:55.860 --> 00:07:07.759 We see the same thing. 00:07:07.879 --> 00:07:08.379 Verse 10, 00:07:08.480 --> 00:07:10.340 Judas Iscariot went to the chief priest 00:07:10.340 --> 00:07:12.139 in order to betray him. 00:07:12.259 --> 00:07:12.860 Verse 11, 00:07:13.160 --> 00:07:15.340 he sought an opportunity to betray him. 00:07:15.480 --> 00:07:16.220 Verse 18, 00:07:16.379 --> 00:07:16.959 Jesus says, 00:07:17.259 --> 00:07:18.340 truly I say to you, 00:07:18.420 --> 00:07:19.879 one of you will betray me. 00:07:20.000 --> 00:07:20.680 Verse 21, 00:07:21.319 --> 00:07:22.280 woe to that man 00:07:22.280 --> 00:07:25.699 by whom the Son of Man is betrayed. 00:07:27.000 --> 00:07:28.980 Mark is repeating this over and over 00:07:28.980 --> 00:07:31.459 because he doesn't want us to miss 00:07:31.459 --> 00:07:34.060 the seriousness of what is happening here. 00:07:34.180 --> 00:07:37.899 And it is not simply any type of betrayal. 00:07:38.060 --> 00:07:39.899 It is not a small betrayal, 00:07:39.899 --> 00:07:41.579 but a large one. 00:07:41.780 --> 00:07:44.040 That's why we're told in verse 43, 00:07:44.280 --> 00:07:47.459 Judas came one of the 12. 00:07:47.459 --> 00:07:49.479 Now, 00:07:50.479 --> 00:07:52.979 this is not news to us, 00:07:53.319 --> 00:07:53.620 right? 00:07:53.779 --> 00:07:55.379 We have known Judas 00:07:55.379 --> 00:07:57.279 for quite some time now. 00:07:57.399 --> 00:07:58.620 We have seen him 00:07:58.620 --> 00:07:59.959 over multiple chapters. 00:08:00.439 --> 00:08:02.279 We don't need to be told 00:08:02.279 --> 00:08:04.000 that Judas is one of the 12. 00:08:04.099 --> 00:08:05.039 That's not a surprise. 00:08:05.279 --> 00:08:07.199 That's not new information for us. 00:08:07.459 --> 00:08:07.740 In fact, 00:08:07.779 --> 00:08:09.599 we were told that earlier 00:08:09.599 --> 00:08:11.620 in this same chapter. 00:08:12.120 --> 00:08:13.060 Mark chapter 14, 00:08:13.060 --> 00:08:13.899 if you have your Bible 00:08:13.899 --> 00:08:14.919 and you look at verse 10, 00:08:14.979 --> 00:08:15.620 it says this, 00:08:15.719 --> 00:08:16.859 then Judas Iscariot, 00:08:17.099 --> 00:08:19.079 who was one of the 12. 00:08:20.579 --> 00:08:23.299 Why does Mark need to tell us 00:08:23.299 --> 00:08:25.199 what we already know? 00:08:27.599 --> 00:08:29.000 Mark tells us 00:08:29.000 --> 00:08:31.000 what we already know 00:08:31.000 --> 00:08:33.059 to help us see 00:08:33.059 --> 00:08:36.559 how serious a betrayal this is. 00:08:36.559 --> 00:08:39.779 It is not that Jesus 00:08:39.779 --> 00:08:41.079 is merely betrayed 00:08:41.079 --> 00:08:41.679 by someone 00:08:41.679 --> 00:08:43.059 who happened to follow him 00:08:43.059 --> 00:08:44.479 and listen to his teaching. 00:08:44.719 --> 00:08:45.739 He's not betrayed 00:08:45.739 --> 00:08:46.259 by someone 00:08:46.259 --> 00:08:47.439 who's on the periphery, 00:08:47.519 --> 00:08:48.219 on the outside. 00:08:48.719 --> 00:08:48.979 No, 00:08:49.099 --> 00:08:49.899 he's betrayed 00:08:49.899 --> 00:08:50.719 by someone 00:08:50.719 --> 00:08:52.859 in the inner circle. 00:08:53.939 --> 00:08:56.699 This is an
