I don't know what you would say. I guess there are, uh, 00:03:15.740 --> 00:03:20.920 here in Hong Kong, a lot of people would think it's money or getting a job, uh, the right job, 00:03:20.920 --> 00:03:26.240 uh, for families, maybe your kids education. I think for many of us, well, the right spouse, 00:03:26.340 --> 00:03:32.439 right? That's the most important thing in life or just what people think of me making a difference. 00:03:32.980 --> 00:03:39.340 I don't know what you would say, but let's wind the clock forward a bit, right? How about a hundred 00:03:39.340 --> 00:03:45.520 years from now? How about a thousand years from now, a million years from now? And then suddenly we know, 00:03:45.520 --> 00:03:49.880 all those things fade into the background and there's only one thing that really matters. 00:03:50.640 --> 00:03:57.300 And that is, well, where do we stand with God, right? There's a God who, you know, who made us, 00:03:57.379 --> 00:04:03.580 who loves us. Uh, where do we stand with him? That will matter. That's, you know, we would be 00:04:03.580 --> 00:04:09.780 accepted by him because right now the world is kind of going as it is not very well, but, uh, the world 00:04:09.780 --> 00:04:16.120 is turning on. But one day the Bible says God will come and he will make everything right. 00:04:16.680 --> 00:04:21.819 And he will make a division between, you know, humanity will be in two groups of people. There 00:04:21.819 --> 00:04:28.939 will be those who are accepted by him and those who are not. And, and which group, well, are, will you 00:04:28.939 --> 00:04:34.319 be in and what makes each group? I think that's the question, right? That is what we need to be sure 00:04:34.319 --> 00:04:40.439 of this a hundred years from now. That's the only thing that matters. And of course, if this is so 00:04:40.439 --> 00:04:46.000 important, no wonder, you know, we want to make sure that we don't change that as we move. This is 00:04:46.000 --> 00:04:53.240 one of our, our fundamentals. And what would you say, you know, what would it, what would make you 00:04:53.240 --> 00:04:57.899 acceptable to God? How can we be in a relationship with him? That's the big question. 00:04:57.899 --> 00:05:03.639 Well, um, that is what we're going to preach on today. And we're going to look at it from this 00:05:03.639 --> 00:05:09.399 famous parable. I think most of us, you know, notice, I mean, most of us have heard about this 00:05:09.399 --> 00:05:13.979 in a way. I love preaching on weird passages. I once preached on Lot and his daughters. And that 00:05:13.979 --> 00:05:19.039 was just great because no one's ever heard a sermon on it. This is slightly different, right? This is, 00:05:19.319 --> 00:05:24.599 I think we all know it. And yet, uh, maybe we haven't heard it rightly and we want to hear, 00:05:24.600 --> 00:05:28.560 we need to hear it again. And if we heard it again, well, a bit like those flight safety 00:05:28.560 --> 00:05:33.080 announcements, right? If this is the most important thing, we need to keep hearing it. 00:05:33.480 --> 00:05:39.700 So let's look at this famous parable. And, uh, yeah, I don't know what you think. Jesus told this 00:05:39.700 --> 00:05:45.280 parable. Normally we have a parable. There's all these metaphors like the seed and I don't know, 00:05:45.320 --> 00:05:50.439 the coin and the sheep. Uh, this is different. This is basically just a story that's very real. 00:05:50.439 --> 00:05:58.300 Uh, but, uh, it is, Jesus tells us who it's for, right? Verse nine, Jesus also told this parable 00:05:58.300 --> 00:06:05.100 to some who trusted in themselves that they were righteous. And he trusted to people who were very 00:06:05.100 --> 00:06:09.680 sure in themselves that they were righteous, which means they thought they were right with God, 00:06:09.740 --> 00:06:14.779 right? This is the thing. They thought they were, you know, they were accepted by God because, 00:06:14.860 --> 00:06:19.779 you know, they were righteous. They were right. And Jesus tells a very simple story. Well, 00:06:19.779 --> 00:06:26.500 there's two men who went up into the temple to pray one, a Pharisee and the other, a tax collector. 00:06:27.459 --> 00:06:32.459 Now, of course, this is 2000 years ago, right? So we don't have Pharisees and tax collectors these 00:06:32.459 --> 00:06:37.319 days. And this is not talking about a government accountants. I mean, what is this about? Right? 00:06:37.379 --> 00:06:43.500 So you hear this and certainly back then, well, a Pharisee, that is a really respected person, 00:06:43.500 --> 00:06:49.920 right? This is a devout religious man who, you know, does his best to obey God's law, 00:06:50.420 --> 00:06:55.180 right? A really good man. And then a tax collector, you probably know a tax collector. Well, 00:06:55.579 --> 00:07:01.379 back then the government in a way was the Romans who occupied the country. And so this was someone 00:07:01.379 --> 00:07:06.920 who worked for the oppressor, right? They were a traitor. And why would you be a traitor? Well, 00:07:06.920 --> 00:07:13.140 because it's good money, because you can extort people. And right. So this is a greedy traitor who 00:07:13.140 --> 00:07:19.740 is corrupt. And certainly for them, that would be the lowest of the low. And then we hear this story. 00:07:20.140 --> 00:07:24.980 And my guess is we're familiar with it. We know the good guy and the bad guy. But back then, I don't 00:07:24.980 --> 00:07:30.860 think Jesus' audience would hear it the same way we hear it now after hearing this for 2000 years. 00:07:30.860 --> 00:07:37.980 All right. Would you know that they would respect the Pharisee? He is, you hear this, you think it's 00:07:37.980 --> 00:07:44.680 the good guy. So, so let's look at them. First, here's the Pharisee. He, the Pharisee standing by 00:07:44.680 --> 00:07:50.460 himself. I mean, this is a holy man, right? See, he wants to keep his distance. And then he stands and 00:07:50.460 --> 00:07:58.280 he prays. He gives thanks to God. God, I thank you. God, I thank you that I am not like other men, 00:07:58.279 --> 00:08:05.819 extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and I give a 00:08:05.819 --> 00:08:12.519 ten full, I give tithes of all that I get. And so he is, he's a good person, right? He doesn't do any 00:08:12.519 --> 00:08:18.119 of these gross sins, right? He doesn't extort people. He's not an, he doesn't sleep around, 00:08:18.259 --> 00:08:22.699 right? He's faithful to his wife. He's not an adulterer, right? He is a good person. And look at 00:08:22.699 --> 00:08:28.119 how obedient he is. He fasts twice a week. Now, how often did you have to fast? 00:08:28.120 --> 00:08:34.899 Fast under the law? Once a year. And this guy does it like a thousand, you know, a thousand, 00:08:35.139 --> 00:08:39.399 you know, ten thousand percent more. That's like amazing, right? Twice a week he fasts. 00:08:40.779 --> 00:08:43.980 You know, we try to do it once a month for our prayer meeting. And even then, 00:08:44.299 --> 00:08:50.000 not everyone joins in. But wow, twice a week. And he gives tithes of all that he gets, right? 00:08:50.000 --> 00:08:53.419 So in the Old Testament, there was this law that you had to give ten percent of your, 00:08:53.419 --> 00:08:59.079 the produce of your field. That's the way the whole system worked with the temple and 00:08:59.079 --> 00:09:06.240 kind of food for the Levites. But he gives times of all that he gets, not just his main income. 00:09:07.039 --> 00:09:12.559 So if you would have dinner with this guy, right? And he pays for the meal, but then with pay me, 00:09:12.559 --> 00:09:20.859 kind of, you go, what is it? AA. You do, uh, uh, go, you go Dutch and it's 58 and you give $60 to him. 00:09:21.500 --> 00:09:28.299 Well, he makes $2 and guess what he does? He tithes 20 cents. He is so careful about not robbing God, 00:09:28.359 --> 00:09:34.239 right? He would tithe this 20 cents for the $2 that you gave him. He is so careful about obeying God. 00:09:34.240 --> 00:09:39.980 Now you hear this and you think, what a guy, right? This guy is in some ways a role model. 00:09:40.960 --> 00:09:46.840 Maybe you have a daughter kind of who is ready for marriage. Well, can I, uh, is this guy still free? 00:09:47.960 --> 00:09:54.379 Well, at the same time for others, I mean, you hear the attitude, right? He thinks he is, he's better than others, 00:09:54.399 --> 00:09:58.639 not just in some others. Well, in a way he says, thank you that I'm better than the rest, 00:09:58.639 --> 00:10:05.539 better than everyone else. And then most others. And some of us, maybe we'd agree. Maybe you hear 00:10:05.539 --> 00:10:10.679 this and you think, yeah, I'm, I'm not like that. Not at all. While others of us, maybe we feel our 00:10:10.679 --> 00:10:19.340 pride pricked, but then here's the other person, a tax collector. And you hear about a tax collector and 00:10:19.340 --> 00:10:25.980 you know, back then all your prejudices go up, right? This is a traitor. This is, this guy is corrupt. 00:10:25.980 --> 00:10:31.159 He extorts people, you know, he extorts his, his own brothers and sisters for the sake of money, 00:10:31.460 --> 00:10:36.639 right? It's what is he doing in a temple? You know, if you're a tax collector, how can you be 00:10:36.639 --> 00:10:40.779 believing in God, right? Because surely if you're religious, you wouldn't be a tax collector. 00:10:41.320 --> 00:10:46.240 It's hard to believe, but he goes to the temple and he's so different from the Pharisee, right? 00:10:47.159 --> 00:10:51.899 And what is it that he does? Verse 13, but a tax collector standing far off, 00:10:51.899 --> 00:10:59.259 wouldn't even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, right? He was so deeply ashamed 00:10:59.259 --> 00:11:06.879 of his sin, deeply ashamed of what he's done. And he has a very simple prayer. God be merciful to me, 00:11:07.459 --> 00:11:13.559 a sinner. And that's not just lip service. It sounds like this sincere cry for help, 00:11:14.179 --> 00:11:18.879 right? Someone here is someone aware of his sin. And in a way he knows where he stands. 00:11:18.879 --> 00:11:23.320 He knows he doesn't deserve it. He does deserve something. He deserves judgment, 00:11:23.820 --> 00:11:29.600 right? That's where he stands with God. Now here you have these two people, right? 00:11:30.019 --> 00:11:37.419 The good guy and the bad guy, but one who is proud and the other who is crying for help. 00:11:38.059 --> 00:11:43.440 How would God respond to these two people? You know, how would he respond to two Christians? 00:11:43.440 --> 00:11:47.880 One person, God, thank you that I'm not like all the people outside church. Thank you that, 00:11:48.320 --> 00:11:53.540 you know, I don't sleep around and I don't get drunk and I read my Bible every day and I come on time to 00:11:53.540 --> 00:12:00.460 the service and, you know, versus a girl who's done all kinds of things that I can't speak about and just, 00:12:01.500 --> 00:12:05.320 God, I'm such a failure. I'm so terrible. Please forgive me. 00:12:05.320 --> 00:12:11.520 How would God respond? I don't know what you would think. I mean, 00:12:11.700 --> 00:12:17.720 I guess we've heard this parable before, but I know missionaries to Muslims and they made a Muslim 00:12:17.720 --> 00:12:23.260 version of this with two Muslims going to the mosque and kind of, and you ask them and they all say, 00:12:23.340 --> 00:12:27.360 well, the Pharisee, that's the good guy, right? That is the person God accepts, the person who does 00:12:27.360 --> 00:12:34.419 all the routines who does with his flowing robes and gets all the prayers, right? And right. But no, 00:12:34.500 --> 00:12:41.800 the big surprise in verse 14, I tell you, listen up. This man went down to his house justified 00:12:41.800 --> 00:12:50.360 rather than the other, the tax collector, the traitor, the extortioner. He gets accepted by God, 00:12:50.360 --> 00:12:57.879 not the Pharisee, right? Such a big shock for Jesus audience, right? That God welcomes this 00:12:57.879 --> 00:13:03.980 tax collector. He's justified. He is, he is right with God and not this other guy. 00:13:04.639 --> 00:13:10.539 What a snob to the Pharisees, right? For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, 00:13:10.779 --> 00:13:16.980 but the one who humbles himself will be exalted. Luke is full of these reversals where the people 00:13:16.980 --> 00:13:23.080 you don't expect get in. And here again, the tax collector is accepted and he will be exalted one 00:13:23.080 --> 00:13:30.340 day when God shows up and the Pharisee will be humbled. And so the, yeah, I guess the right attitude 00:13:30.340 --> 00:13:35.720 is humility, but that raises two questions, right? You hear this story and it's just unbelievable, but 00:13:35.720 --> 00:13:42.539 the two questions, I mean, why is this guy accepted, right? Why is this the right response? 00:13:42.539 --> 00:13:47.599 Now you might hear and think, well, pride and humility is just all that matters. It doesn't 00:13:47.599 --> 00:13:52.799 matter how good you are. If you're proud, that cancels everything. Well, no matter how bad you 00:13:52.799 --> 00:13:57.879 are, if you're humble, that's good. Now, of course, pride is a bad thing. You know, it's like the number 00:13:57.879 --> 00:14:03.699 one sin in some ways in the Bible, but that's a different kind of pride, right? So often it has to 00:14:03.699 --> 00:14:09.279 do with what we heard last week, the greatness of God, right? If you see a God who is the infinite 00:14:09.279 --> 00:14:14.079 creator and we are just creatures and we've received everything from him and nothing from 00:14:14.079 --> 00:14:19.539 ourselves, well, of course we'll be humble, but that is humility because of God's greatness. It's 00:14:19.539 --> 00:14:25.819 not because of our sinfulness. No, this is a different kind of humility and that doesn't 00:14:25.819 --> 00:14:31.919 cover all the wrong that this tax collector has done. Of course, the real truth is which 00:14:31.919 --> 00:14:38.439 of these two guys is a sinner? Which of these two guys is the bad guy? And I think we know 00:14:38.440 --> 00:14:46.180 the answer is both, right? In the Bible, it's both. It's just only one of them recognizes it. 00:14:47.300 --> 00:14:54.220 The word justified is to do with the word righteous. So it's that Jesus tells his people who 00:14:54.220 --> 00:14:58.620 tells it to those who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, who were really sure that 00:14:58.620 --> 00:15:03.400 they were right with God, that God would accept them. He just doesn't think he's a sinner, right? 00:15:03.399 --> 00:15:09.659 This Pharisee, okay, maybe I'm not perfect, but I'm pretty good. I'm good enough for God. 00:15:11.039 --> 00:15:14.439 But at the same time, that would mean that he would really misunderstand sin, right? 00:15:14.980 --> 00:15:19.860 I mean, what does he talk about? He just talks about externals, really gross sins. 00:15:20.840 --> 00:15:27.419 And so, yeah, he hasn't slept around with other women. Sure. Right? And he hasn't extorted or 00:15:27.419 --> 00:15:32.839 something. And he does simple external things like fasting and tithing. That's very simple. 00:15:33.779 --> 00:15:41.879 Of course, what is he? But how about things like his heart? How about his motivations? Are they 00:15:41.879 --> 00:15:47.339 pure? As we heard two weeks ago, you know, loving God with all your heart and all your soul and all 00:15:47.339 --> 00:15:52.199 your mind and all your strength. Is that what he's doing? And that's the thing in the Bible. We, 00:15:52.200 --> 00:15:58.120 God's standards are so much higher, right? Because, you know, when it comes to an infinite, 00:15:58.360 --> 00:16:06.600 perfect God, anything less than perfect is imperfect, right? You know, he just lowers the 00:16:06.600 --> 00:16:12.300 standards to something that he can meet and then he meets it and he's proud. But he doesn't realize 00:16:12.300 --> 00:16:18.080 how pure and holy God is. You know, if we really knew God, if we could really see him, 00:16:18.080 --> 00:16:25.000 none of us would be proud. All of us would be before him. Well, like a tax collector, aware of 00:16:25.000 --> 00:16:30.340 our sin. Now the tax collector understood his position before God. Actually, I don't think he 00:16:30.340 --> 00:16:35.720 understood all that stuff about the heart and everything. He just, his external sins was already 00:16:35.720 --> 00:16:44.440 enough for him to feel condemned. But that's the thing. We, if we think we're good enough for God, 00:16:44.440 --> 00:16:49.380 we really don't understand the standards. But at the same time, that raises the question, 00:16:49.740 --> 00:16:55.100 how can then God accept this tax collector? If God is so pure and holy and at such high standards, 00:16:55.400 --> 00:17:01.480 how can he just let this tax collector in? Right? I mean, objectively, I think the Pharisee is a 00:17:01.480 --> 00:17:08.240 better person in some way, right? I'm sure he's committed less crimes in some way. Sometimes you hear 00:17:08.240 --> 00:17:14.019 that, right? Sometimes, uh, some criminal goes to prison and he becomes a Christian and he says, 00:17:14.099 --> 00:17:19.700 yeah, I've been forgiven everything. And everyone is angry because you know, how can this guy just now 00:17:19.700 --> 00:17:23.440 suddenly be a Christian and go to heaven when he's done all these bad things? 00:17:25.539 --> 00:17:32.180 Well, this parable was spoken in a way in the old Testament, right? Before, uh, Jesus, 00:17:32.180 --> 00:17:37.980 the work that Jesus did, the tax collector praise, have mercy. Now there's different words for mercy 00:17:37.980 --> 00:17:45.480 in the Bible. What he says here has the flavor of, you know, remove your wrath from me. It is related 00:17:45.480 --> 00:17:51.019 to propitiation. If you've seen that word in the Bible, propitiation, uh, about a sacrifice that 00:17:51.019 --> 00:17:58.120 brings us back to God. The thing he's asking, please remove your judgment from me. That is what he 00:17:58.119 --> 00:18:05.159 wants because that is what he knows he deserves. That is what we all need. And wonderfully God 00:18:05.159 --> 00:18:11.539 accepts him then as righteous. But why? Well, because God's judgment is taken away and how? 00:18:11.899 --> 00:18:16.659 Well, a few chapters later, of course, right? In chapter 23, Jesus goes to the cross, 00:18:16.659 --> 00:18:22.599 right? And Jesus who told this parable, yeah, he went to the cross and as he hung there, he took 00:18:22.599 --> 00:18:29.000 all the judgment that his people deserved. He took away God's wrath. I mean, God's wrath, 00:18:29.199 --> 00:18:34.480 it has to go somewhere, right? Sin has to be punished. It doesn't get canceled. Instead, 00:18:35.000 --> 00:18:43.939 Jesus takes it. And because he takes it, wow, this tax collector can be accepted, right? He can be 00:18:43.939 --> 00:18:49.379 perfect in God's sight. That's why I call it perfect sinners. It's from a famous book. Uh, yeah, 00:18:49.380 --> 00:18:58.940 he can be accepted by God just by, well, just by what Jesus did. Uh, it's not that the tax collector 00:18:58.940 --> 00:19:04.380 was better than the Pharisee. That's not why he gets accepted water. They both need mercy, but he, 00:19:04.520 --> 00:19:10.500 he asked for it. And so he gets it. That's the thing, right? We are accepted not because we're good, 00:19:10.640 --> 00:19:16.840 but because we're forgiven. Uh, if you, you see that in other places, I mean, when Jesus hangs on the 00:19:16.839 --> 00:19:21.319 cross, there is someone very similar. There was a thief hanging there and actually two thieves and 00:19:21.319 --> 00:19:27.759 one of them, well, he insults Jesus, but the other one, well, we, we know the text, right? He, uh, 00:19:27.839 --> 00:19:34.959 he knows he's done wrong. Uh, verse 40 in chapter 23, the other rebuked him saying, don't you fear God 00:19:34.959 --> 00:19:40.359 since you were under the same sentence of condemnation. And we indeed justly for we are 00:19:40.359 --> 00:19:46.579 receiving the due reward of our deeds. And he says, Jesus, remember me when you come into your 00:19:46.579 --> 00:19:54.979 kingdom, he know, he needs mercy and he knows where to ask from Jesus because Jesus, well, he paid the 00:19:54.979 --> 00:20:01.379 price. And so, yeah, humidity should lead us to Jesus, to the one taking away God's wrath, right? 00:20:02.059 --> 00:20:07.639 That's what we need. But if we're proud, of course we won't. The Pharisee didn't think he needed 00:20:07.640 --> 00:20:13.720 forgiveness. He didn't think he needed a savior, someone to take away God's judgment because you 00:20:13.720 --> 00:20:18.600 didn't need God's judgment. He was good enough. And so, yeah, if you don't think you need it, 00:20:18.640 --> 00:20:22.180 you won't ask for it, right? As Jesus said, healthy people don't need a doctor. 00:20:23.700 --> 00:20:29.140 No, if he would really know his desperate need of forgiveness and how it only comes through Jesus, 00:20:29.259 --> 00:20:36.780 he would come to Jesus. He would come confessing his sin. He would come humbly and ask him, 00:20:36.779 --> 00:20:43.259 but that's the thing, right? That's the fundamental truth. The only way, well, it's not because of 00:20:43.259 --> 00:20:48.980 anything we do. It is purely through Jesus. And that means coming to him with our sin and, 00:20:48.980 --> 00:20:55.920 and remaining so aware of our sin that we will stick close to Jesus. And then we can't lose that, 00:20:55.980 --> 00:20:59.139 right? If this is the most important thing, if this is the only way to be accepted, 00:20:59.420 --> 00:21:06.039 to come humbly to Jesus, then we need to keep hold of that as a church. Well, let's talk about a few ways 00:21:06.039 --> 00:21:11.799 that that applies. First of all, I guess in becoming a Christian, right? Now, let me talk to you if you 00:21:11.799 --> 00:21:16.960 wouldn't call yourself a Christian and you're here. I don't know how you would think that, hey, we are, 00:21:17.399 --> 00:21:23.240 how you're accepted to God, right? But becoming a Christian starts with this. It starts with 00:21:23.240 --> 00:21:29.859 admitting your sin and asking for mercy. I often meet people, yeah, who still think come to church, 00:21:30.240 --> 00:21:34.000 maybe, maybe you're here because you want to learn how to be a better person. And the Bible has 00:21:34.000 --> 00:21:41.000 lots of things to say about how to be a good person, sure. But that is not the thing. You never 00:21:41.000 --> 00:21:48.259 get to the point that you are now so better enough, so good enough that God accepts us. You know, 00:21:48.319 --> 00:21:54.059 think about our thoughts. You know, are your thoughts as good as your actions? Because it's very easy to 00:21:54.059 --> 00:22:00.460 not do things, but to think it. How are your motivations? Most of us would think, well, we were 80% good, maybe 90% is good. 00:22:07.940 --> 00:22:13.559 But if you're 90% good, you're 10% bad, right? That's the problem. Would God accept someone who 00:22:13.559 --> 00:22:19.819 is 10% bad? A criminal who says, hey, I only commit crimes 10% of the time. Is that okay? 00:22:20.460 --> 00:22:26.460 That's not okay, right? No, when it comes to God, it's 100%. And so we need Jesus. You need Jesus. 00:22:26.460 --> 00:22:32.920 And it starts with this attitude, confessing our sins. Or maybe you're here and you consider 00:22:32.920 --> 00:22:38.559 yourself a Christian. But actually, what makes you a Christian? And you say, well, because I go to 00:22:38.559 --> 00:22:47.180 church and I'm a good person and I read my Bible and I pray and all those things. Well, are you sure 00:22:47.180 --> 00:22:52.920 that God will accept you based on that? If you picture yourself standing before God, do you sound 00:22:52.920 --> 00:22:59.440 more like the Pharisee or the tax collector? That's a good question, right? You know, if God would ask you, 00:23:00.240 --> 00:23:06.320 why should I accept you? What would you say? Would you talk about, hey, well, I've done this and this and 00:23:06.320 --> 00:23:12.460 this? Or would you say, well, actually you shouldn't, but Jesus died for me. Because that is the answer. 00:23:12.460 --> 00:23:18.860 And you need, if you maybe, if you think it's about you, maybe you've never really become a Christian. 00:23:19.700 --> 00:23:25.799 So can I encourage you to look at your sin and see how much you need Jesus and come to him. 00:23:27.420 --> 00:23:30.900 And actually, that's not just the start of the Christian life. Last week, if you were here, every month, we have this confession 00:24:52.259 --> 00:24:56.579 where we confess our sins in the service. Actually, it's only once a month. Historically, 00:24:56.659 --> 00:25:00.980 many churches do it every week. Some Christians do it every day because it's just so helpful, 00:25:00.980 --> 00:25:07.740 because it gets your heart in the right place. It reminds you, yeah, I need, I'm a sinner. 00:25:08.519 --> 00:25:14.240 I mean, imagine if we were Pharisees and every week we have this confession, right? I don't know now, but imagine us, hey, God, we thank you that we are not like other 00:25:19.140 --> 00:25:24.839 people, immoral people, greedy drunkards, people who just don't go to church. We read our Bible every 00:25:24.839 --> 00:25:31.659 day. We're in a CG and we're always on time for the service. Amen. I mean, what does that do? That 00:25:31.659 --> 00:25:38.019 makes you proud, right? But that points us to ourselves. No, this is what we really say. This 00:25:38.019 --> 00:25:43.220 is, well, it's not our confession. It's from an Anglican church, from the Anglican church. But yeah, 00:25:43.279 --> 00:25:49.980 we say, most merciful God, we confess that we've sinned against you in thought, word, and deed by what 00:25:49.980 --> 00:25:54.259 we have done, by what we've undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart. We have not loved 00:25:54.259 --> 00:25:58.960 our neighbor as ourselves, right? You can hear that it's really deep. It's not just some external 00:25:58.960 --> 00:26:04.880 things. It's our thoughts. It's our words. It's the things we should have done, but didn't. And yet we can so easily think like that, right? There's the famous Sunday 00:26:17.539 --> 00:26:22.960 school teacher who, uh, you know, told this parable and then, okay, let's pray. So easy to think, well, 00:26:29.980 --> 00:26:35.039 yeah, I'm a pretty good Christian and that's why God will accept me because I do this. Thank you that we are a gospel centered 00:26:38.720 --> 00:26:45.680 church and we really understand how we are saved. We are not saved by theology. The Pharisees, 00:27:38.880 --> 00:27:43.900 they look down on everyone else. And of course, if you're proud, if you're better, why wouldn't you 00:27:43.900 --> 00:27:49.880 look down on those who are less good than you? But imagine what a terrible church we would be then, 00:27:49.940 --> 00:27:54.980 right? If all of us here were proud of our achievements and all of us were, you know, 00:27:55.000 --> 00:27:59.960 just trying to be as good as we could, right? And all of us, and that's the atmosphere here and 00:27:59.960 --> 00:28:05.840 people come here and they feel like they have to come along, right? And then maybe their life is 00:28:05.840 --> 00:28:11.960 not sorted out and they see us and our life looks so great. We are all so great. They would just feel 00:28:11.960 --> 00:28:17.279 condemned. No, a church should be a place where I think we're open to each other, where we're honest, 00:28:17.980 --> 00:28:23.840 where we are aware of our sin. And I guess then treat everyone with the same mercy and love. I mean, 00:28:23.839 --> 00:28:31.279 there's no one I know better than myself, right? And I know myself and I know what goes on in my heart 00:28:31.279 --> 00:28:37.259 and in my mind. You know, how can I judge someone else? How can I feel better than them if I know, 00:28:37.439 --> 00:28:42.559 right? Ideally, Christian community is such a place of grace and mercy. Doesn't mean we don't 00:28:42.559 --> 00:28:48.439 take sin seriously. The Bible tells us to take sin seriously, but always with grace and mercy. 00:28:48.440 --> 00:28:54.100 And of course, then our witness as well, right? Again, I think of people coming in, 00:28:54.900 --> 00:29:00.940 you know, there's often a problem with Christians, right? The holier than thou kind of attitude where 00:29:00.940 --> 00:29:06.019 Christians, you know, I guess in many ways, Christians often on the surface live a better life 00:29:06.019 --> 00:29:12.700 than many people in the world, but it's not about the externals, right? As Christians, we know God, 00:29:12.779 --> 00:29:18.080 we know his standards. Christians should be the most humble people in the world because we actually know 00:29:18.079 --> 00:29:24.220 what God's standards are. But so often we're not, right? And that puts people off. They see the 00:29:24.220 --> 00:29:31.299 hypocrisy. Now, if we are a humble church, a church where the message is not, we are better than you. 00:29:31.419 --> 00:29:37.699 And so be like us, where the message is actually, we're no different from you. We are sinners like 00:29:37.699 --> 00:29:44.279 you, but there is someone who can forgive. That is the right message, right? The message of 00:29:44.279 --> 00:29:50.039 forgiveness, the message, yeah, that we're accepted, not what we've done, but based on Jesus' death on 00:29:50.039 --> 00:29:54.799 the cross. And that's the only way. And as Christians, I think we know that and we've received that. 00:29:55.259 --> 00:30:01.700 And so many people in Hong Kong haven't. And that's the problem, right?
