But we're going to start in Acts 17, where we have a background to the church in 00:00:49.980 --> 00:00:57.740 Thessalonica. So as you're looking that up, just to encourage you, if you have a background 00:00:57.740 --> 00:01:04.700 of these, to get one of these, maybe they're all gone, but one per family. I'll print up 00:01:04.700 --> 00:01:10.000 some more if there's not enough. But this little booklet will just give you an overview, and 00:01:10.000 --> 00:01:14.900 it will be helpful throughout the weeks to turn to it every so often and remember where 00:01:14.900 --> 00:01:24.500 we are. So that's written for you to help you and encourage you. So let's read from Acts 17, 00:01:25.940 --> 00:01:35.060 verses 1 to 10. So this is Paul. He's on his second missionary journey. He's been sent out 00:01:35.060 --> 00:01:43.159 by his home church, and he's traveled through modern-day Turkey, and he's arrived in Greece. 00:01:45.219 --> 00:01:55.079 And he's teaching and sharing the gospel to see new churches planted. So let's start in verse 1. 00:01:55.079 --> 00:02:04.000 When Paul and his companions, so his companions there are Silas and Timothy, had passed through 00:02:04.000 --> 00:02:11.659 Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a Jewish synagogue. 00:02:13.419 --> 00:02:21.340 As was his custom, Paul went into the synagogue, and on three Sabbath days, so over three weeks, 00:02:21.340 --> 00:02:31.219 he reasoned with them from the scriptures, explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise 00:02:31.219 --> 00:02:40.620 from the dead. This Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah, he said. Some of the Jews were 00:02:40.620 --> 00:02:51.020 persuaded and joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks and quite a few 00:02:51.020 --> 00:03:00.540 prominent women. But other Jews were jealous. So they rounded up some bad characters from the marketplace, 00:03:00.900 --> 00:03:09.540 formed a mob, and started a riot in the city. They rushed to Jason's house, one of the new believers, 00:03:11.000 --> 00:03:17.320 in search of Paul and Silas in order to bring them out to the crowd. But when they did not find them, 00:03:17.319 --> 00:03:22.359 they dragged Jason and some other believers before the city officials, shouting, 00:03:23.139 --> 00:03:30.319 these men, who have caused trouble all over the world, have now come here. And Jason has welcomed 00:03:30.319 --> 00:03:39.259 them into his house. They are all defying Caesar's decrees, saying there is another king, one called 00:03:39.259 --> 00:03:49.079 Jesus. When they heard this, the crowd and the city officials were thrown into turmoil. Then they put 00:03:49.079 --> 00:03:58.979 Jason and the others on bail and let them go. As soon as it was night, the believers sent Paul and Silas 00:03:58.979 --> 00:04:04.939 away to Berea, and on arriving there, they went to the Jewish synagogue. 00:04:04.939 --> 00:04:12.460 And Kirstie is now going to come and read Thessalonians, so you can turn to that now. 00:04:17.459 --> 00:04:24.159 So looking at 1 Thessalonians chapter 1, verses 1 to 6. 00:04:24.160 --> 00:04:34.880 Paul, Silas, and Timothy, to the Church of the Thessalonians, in God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, 00:04:35.360 --> 00:04:42.980 grace and peace to you. Way back in 1985, a group of people began to pray for a small town just outside Cork. 00:06:42.500 --> 00:06:49.100 A children's club was started. Other people went and knocked on doors to tell people about Jesus. 00:06:49.100 --> 00:06:57.460 Later on, a project was put together whereby a Bible was offered to every home in the town. 00:06:58.980 --> 00:07:09.680 Three years later, a church was started with just eight people committing themselves to Christ and to each other. 00:07:09.680 --> 00:07:17.319 Almost 40 years later, almost 40 years ago, Carigoline Baptist Church began. 00:07:18.860 --> 00:07:25.340 But the question today is, how is Carigoline Baptist Church today? 00:07:26.439 --> 00:07:27.840 How are we doing? 00:07:28.780 --> 00:07:33.399 Maybe some of you are excited and encouraged with church life. 00:07:33.399 --> 00:07:40.319 Or maybe some of you have become disillusioned, disappointed. 00:07:41.319 --> 00:07:47.179 It could be that you're brand new and you're still trying to figure out this Christian faith. 00:07:48.479 --> 00:07:54.939 Or maybe you've been a Christian a long time, and you've just lost your way. 00:07:54.939 --> 00:07:59.019 How is the church today? 00:07:59.019 --> 00:08:04.740 It was an incredible start. 00:08:05.939 --> 00:08:15.099 In just three short weeks, a church was planted in Greece, in a thriving city called Thessalonica. 00:08:16.219 --> 00:08:19.680 But not everybody was happy with the beginnings of this new church. 00:08:20.279 --> 00:08:24.939 Those who were opposed to Christ and the Christians started a riot. 00:08:24.939 --> 00:08:30.439 And Paul and his team had to leave in fear of their lives. 00:08:31.040 --> 00:08:38.480 And they moved on to the next cities, close by from Berea, and then to Athens, and then down to Corinth. 00:08:41.080 --> 00:08:50.200 Separated by this time for a few months, they had no idea how this new church was Remember, they're separated. 00:09:21.900 --> 00:09:22.900 They're far apart. 00:09:22.899 --> 00:09:25.240 When we could stand it no longer. 00:09:25.240 --> 00:09:28.720 We thought it best to be left by ourselves in Athens. 00:09:29.720 --> 00:09:36.299 So we sent Timothy, who is our brother and co-worker in God's service in spreading the gospel of Christ, 00:09:36.299 --> 00:09:41.240 to strengthen and encourage you in your faith. 00:09:41.240 --> 00:09:44.580 So that no one would be unsettled by these trials. 00:09:44.580 --> 00:09:48.580 The trials, of course, was the opposition they were facing. 00:09:49.580 --> 00:09:53.500 For you know quite well that we are destined for them. 00:09:53.500 --> 00:09:56.000 Verse 6. 00:09:56.000 --> 00:10:08.259 But Timothy has just now come to us from you and has brought us good news about your faith and love. 00:10:08.259 --> 00:10:12.519 A deep sigh of relief. 00:10:12.519 --> 00:10:16.899 Timothy had been sent to find out how the church was going. 00:10:17.319 --> 00:10:19.700 He comes back to Paul and the rest of the team. 00:10:20.120 --> 00:10:23.139 Guys, the church is still there. 00:10:24.100 --> 00:10:25.620 It's still going. 00:10:25.620 --> 00:10:32.740 But that didn't mean let's now forget about them. 00:10:33.340 --> 00:10:36.240 No, like any church, they needed ongoing encouragement. 00:10:36.720 --> 00:10:38.000 Chapter 3, verse 10. 00:10:37.960 --> 00:10:49.899 Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you again and supply what is lacking in your faith. 00:10:49.899 --> 00:10:54.039 The longing, the desire to get back to see them. 00:10:54.399 --> 00:11:01.740 And in the meantime, Paul sits down and he writes a letter to strengthen them in the faith. 00:11:02.500 --> 00:11:12.740 You see, every church, whether it's Thessalonica in the year 50 or Carigoline in 2025, we need encouragement. 00:11:13.620 --> 00:11:19.279 And to strengthen us, we're taken back to the very beginnings. 00:11:19.899 --> 00:11:22.319 To how it all started. 00:11:23.419 --> 00:11:24.220 The gospel. 00:11:25.079 --> 00:11:26.980 The good news about Jesus. 00:11:27.500 --> 00:11:32.279 You see, the gospel, and here's the two big things we're going to be looking at today. 00:11:32.279 --> 00:11:35.579 The gospel forms the church. 00:11:36.500 --> 00:11:39.699 And the gospel shapes the church. 00:11:40.399 --> 00:11:42.659 The gospel is where it all began. 00:11:43.539 --> 00:11:46.699 And where we must always return. 00:11:46.700 --> 00:11:56.500 So, our first big idea today is don't forget our roots. 00:11:57.620 --> 00:12:01.720 Don't forget our roots formed by the gospel. 00:12:02.540 --> 00:12:09.580 You see, going back and remembering our roots takes us back to a beautiful work of God. 00:12:09.580 --> 00:12:14.500 It is the good news about Christ. 00:12:15.040 --> 00:12:16.320 Look at verse 5. 00:12:16.500 --> 00:12:17.820 Chapter 1, verse 5. 00:12:19.740 --> 00:12:24.060 Remember, he says, our gospel came to you. 00:12:24.059 --> 00:12:30.179 Not simply with words, but also with power and with the Holy Spirit. 00:12:30.179 --> 00:12:33.539 That means that, yes, it contained words. 00:12:33.739 --> 00:12:35.659 The gospel is a message. 00:12:36.539 --> 00:12:39.739 And it comes with the power of the Spirit. 00:12:41.339 --> 00:12:45.719 And Acts 17 reminds us what that gospel is. 00:12:45.859 --> 00:12:47.239 What that word is. 00:12:47.479 --> 00:12:48.979 You can see it on the screen. 00:12:48.980 --> 00:13:00.039 He, Paul, reasoned with them from the scriptures, explaining and proving that the Messiah had to suffer and rise from the dead. 00:13:00.539 --> 00:13:04.539 This Jesus that I'm proclaiming to you is the Messiah. 00:13:06.539 --> 00:13:10.379 Messiah simply means king anointed one. 00:13:10.379 --> 00:13:14.259 God's chosen king. 00:13:14.860 --> 00:13:22.580 A king sent by God to renew this broken world and establish his loving rule in our lives. 00:13:23.299 --> 00:13:25.279 Now, that's good news. 00:13:25.679 --> 00:13:28.240 But it's also confronting news. 00:13:28.659 --> 00:13:32.899 Because, well, we all live as if we're the king. 00:13:33.939 --> 00:13:35.360 It's my life. 00:13:36.019 --> 00:13:38.159 And I will do as I please. 00:13:38.159 --> 00:13:43.299 The problem with that is everybody else lives as if they're the king. 00:13:44.059 --> 00:13:49.600 Which means it becomes clash of the kings every time we meet each other. 00:13:50.159 --> 00:13:55.539 And we make a mess of our lives and we ruin everyone else's life. 00:13:56.839 --> 00:14:04.740 So God, in his love, sends the Messiah, the promised one, who will put everything right. 00:14:04.740 --> 00:14:16.360 A king who comes to demonstrate his authority not with weapons and force, but through gentleness and service. 00:14:17.680 --> 00:14:18.899 For here is a king. 00:14:19.120 --> 00:14:20.879 Look at the verses there on screen. 00:14:21.820 --> 00:14:29.720 He says, who suffers for you and rises from the dead. 00:14:29.720 --> 00:14:36.279 Here is a king who comes to you and who dies for you. 00:14:36.779 --> 00:14:41.620 Who takes the judgment that we deserve for rejecting Jesus as king. 00:14:42.620 --> 00:14:50.399 And he defeats death for you by rising from the grave, giving you eternal life in his eternal kingdom. 00:14:50.399 --> 00:14:55.360 Jesus is the good and gracious king. 00:14:55.360 --> 00:15:01.159 Who comes not to crush you, but to bless you. 00:15:02.840 --> 00:15:09.659 Acts records for us the response from some of those in that city. 00:15:09.659 --> 00:15:13.219 Some of the Jews were persuaded. 00:15:14.139 --> 00:15:15.219 They were convinced. 00:15:16.439 --> 00:15:23.899 And they joined Paul and Silas, as did a large number of God-fearing Greeks, some other religious folk there. 00:15:24.639 --> 00:15:29.699 And quite a few, in other words, a lot of prominent women. 00:15:30.279 --> 00:15:31.919 Successful business ladies. 00:15:31.919 --> 00:15:43.599 You see, no matter who you are, or where you come from, or what you've done, this is the glorious gospel that has come to us. 00:15:44.299 --> 00:15:50.559 And that means if we have accepted responsibility for our rebellion against Jesus, 00:15:51.779 --> 00:15:57.459 and if you've asked him to forgive you, that means he is now your king. 00:15:57.460 --> 00:16:05.740 You're now part of his never-ending, life-giving, joy-thrilling kingdom. 00:16:06.660 --> 00:16:18.580 The gospel takes ordinary people like us, and by the power of the Holy Spirit, forms us to being children of the king. 00:16:19.700 --> 00:16:23.340 That is good news about Christ. 00:16:24.340 --> 00:16:26.960 But it's not just good news about Christ. 00:16:27.460 --> 00:16:30.600 It's good news about church. 00:16:31.440 --> 00:16:39.740 Because when we believe this gospel, when we trust Jesus, we're not begins. 00:16:50.100 --> 00:16:55.759 Paul, Silas, and Timothy, to the church of the Thessalonians. 00:16:55.759 --> 00:17:02.220 You see, we're not saved to live isolated individual lives and do our own thing. 00:17:03.080 --> 00:17:06.660 No, we are to share in a committed community. 00:17:07.140 --> 00:17:12.099 That's why the letter is written to the church of the Thessalonians. 00:17:12.099 --> 00:17:16.919 Or as we will say today, to the church of Carigaline. 00:17:18.240 --> 00:17:25.379 But we're much more than just a bunch of believers who live around the town of Carigaline, and this is our address. 00:17:26.379 --> 00:17:29.240 No, we also have another location. 00:17:29.240 --> 00:17:34.180 Not just geographical, but spiritual. 00:17:34.700 --> 00:17:36.180 Again, look at verse 1. 00:17:36.180 --> 00:17:39.500 To the church of the Thessalonians. 00:17:40.620 --> 00:17:41.839 Where are they? 00:17:41.839 --> 00:17:47.419 In God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:17:48.299 --> 00:17:53.159 We're not just believers in Carigaline physically here today. 00:17:53.160 --> 00:18:00.800 But we are in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ. 00:18:01.480 --> We can lose sight of our beginnings. 00:20:00.639 --> 00:20:09.039 We can drift from Christ, and we can become detached from the church. 00:20:10.319 --> 00:20:14.919 So he's writing and encouraging thankfulness for the joy, and he can't contain it. 00:21:12.819 --> 00:21:15.179 Look again, chapter 2, verse 13. 00:21:15.659 --> 00:21:23.779 And we also thank God continually, because when you church, he sees lives that are not just coming to Christ, but have been shaped and transformed by the gospel. 00:21:57.880 --> 00:22:01.800 Gospel fruit is on display. 00:22:01.800 --> 00:22:03.700 everywhere. 00:22:16.140 --> 00:22:21.259 So what are these fruits of the gospel? 00:22:21.259 --> 00:22:30.040 What happens when the gospel grabs a hold of our life and changes us from the inside It's all rooted in, see the little phrase at the end of verse 3? 00:23:34.259 --> 00:23:36.819 In our Lord Jesus Christ. 00:23:36.819 --> 00:23:48.480 So our work, our labour, our endurance, our service, all comes from, all flows from our relationship with Christ. 00:23:48.480 --> 00:24:07.940 So whatever you do in the life of the church here in Carrigline, whether you're somebody who welcomes, or somebody who helps out at Polo, or The Rock, or Rooted, or Core, or praying, or visiting, or phoning up someone to encourage them, or texting them. 00:24:07.940 --> 00:24:37.920 Our work to come. 00:25:31.619 --> 00:25:45.960 You see, a church that is rooted in the gospel will grow into a beautiful tree, displaying a life full of fruitful service. 00:25:45.960 --> 00:25:57.960 And as I look out from here, and as you look around at each other, look at a church full of fruitful service. 00:25:57.960 --> 00:26:02.240 Of people who do things week by week. 00:26:02.840 --> 00:26:06.940
