take things that maybe are hard to understand and they boil them down. 00:01:26.159 --> 00:01:28.519 I told you recently that they're also a guide to prayer. 00:01:28.640 --> 00:01:29.980 The Psalms teach us how to pray. 00:01:30.920 --> 00:01:32.719 And we've seen all sorts of varieties of Psalms. 00:01:32.799 --> 00:01:34.519 We've seen Psalms of Lament. 00:01:34.840 --> 00:01:37.019 Those were some of the first Psalms that we looked at this summer. 00:01:37.560 --> 00:01:42.540 We looked at an imprecatory Psalm, a Psalm that prays for God's justice in Psalm 5. 00:01:42.540 --> 00:01:48.460 We looked most recently, last week, at a penitential Psalm, a Psalm praying for God's grace and His forgiveness. 00:01:49.680 --> 00:01:52.640 And we're going to come to a new category of Psalm today. 00:01:52.820 --> 00:01:53.719 New for the summer. 00:01:53.840 --> 00:01:57.320 We actually looked at it in December when we looked at the Psalms during Advent. 00:01:57.420 --> 00:01:58.640 And this is a Psalm of praise. 00:01:59.880 --> 00:02:03.600 And Psalms of praise introduce another category for us of what the Psalms do. 00:02:03.599 --> 00:02:12.699 So if you are a parent, one of the things that you want for your child is you want them to love and celebrate certain things. 00:02:13.900 --> 00:02:17.519 And you want them to grieve and mourn and hate other things. 00:02:19.199 --> 00:02:24.419 And one of the things that's most heartbreaking is if you have a child and they love and celebrate things that you grieve. 00:02:25.560 --> 00:02:27.519 And they grieve things that you celebrate. 00:02:27.520 --> 00:02:34.900 So what you want to do as you're raising them and nurturing them and training them is you want them to grow in their emotions. 00:02:35.060 --> 00:02:37.420 You want them to understand what's good and beautiful in the world. 00:02:37.680 --> 00:02:38.900 And you want them to love that. 00:02:39.500 --> 00:02:42.800 And you also want them to understand what's dangerous and terrible in the world. 00:02:42.840 --> 00:02:44.540 And you want them to grieve and stay away from that. 00:02:45.640 --> 00:02:50.140 And what the Psalms do for us, besides all these other things that we've looked at, is the Psalms shape our emotions. 00:02:51.240 --> 00:02:55.340 The Psalms teach us what it is that God wants us to love and celebrate. 00:02:55.340 --> 00:02:58.240 And what it is he wants us to grieve and mourn. 00:02:58.280 --> 00:03:02.400 And that's what happens when we look at a psalm of praise, which is this Psalm 8 before us. 00:03:02.400 --> 00:03:08.439 Psalms of praise are ones that talk to us about how it is and why it is that we love and celebrate God and what he's done. 00:03:10.620 --> 00:03:14.060 Now, praise is a difficult concept, I think, to wrap our heads around. 00:03:14.140 --> 00:03:17.680 Because it's not a word that I hear used outside of the church very often. 00:03:19.099 --> 00:03:23.840 And so sometimes it can feel like something that's maybe a little corny or cheesy when people talk about praise. 00:03:23.840 --> 00:03:29.140 But I'm going to submit to you today that praise is an essential part of being human, number one. 00:03:29.200 --> 00:03:30.860 And second, it's something that we do all the time. 00:03:31.219 --> 00:03:35.400 So if you're anything like me, anytime you buy something or purchase something, 00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:40.360 and it used to be when you purchased something online, but now it could even be when you purchase something in person, 00:03:40.740 --> 00:03:42.539 you're almost certainly going to receive an email. 00:03:44.199 --> 00:03:45.920 And this email says, 00:03:46.759 --> 00:03:48.400 Sing praises to us. 00:03:48.400 --> 00:03:52.360 It doesn't actually say that. 00:03:52.400 --> 00:03:53.060 What it does say is, 00:03:53.140 --> 00:03:54.159 Would you please write us a review? 00:03:56.159 --> 00:03:58.819 And so every time someone sends you asking you for a review, 00:03:58.920 --> 00:04:00.480 what they're asking for is your praise. 00:04:01.420 --> 00:04:02.300 And if you're like me, 00:04:02.360 --> 00:04:06.280 most of the time you ignore it because you don't have time to praise people's products online. 00:04:06.340 --> 00:04:07.439 You have more important things to do. 00:04:08.780 --> 00:04:11.439 But if it's someone or course, there was nothing I'd want to do more, right? 00:04:22.400 --> 00:04:23.620 Because I loved my realtor. 00:04:24.160 --> 00:04:27.420 And I thought she had done such a fantastic job and helped me in so many ways. 00:04:27.500 --> 00:04:31.519 And so the first thing I did was go and immediately write a song of praise. 00:04:33.439 --> 00:04:37.420 I wrote a review telling everyone how great my realtor is. 00:04:40.079 --> 00:04:44.000 And so praise is not something that's just for those inside of the church. 00:04:44.000 --> 00:04:45.000 It's not just for Christians. 00:04:45.139 --> 00:04:46.660 Praise is something that's part of our lives. 00:04:46.720 --> 00:04:48.060 It's part of what it means to be human. 00:04:48.180 --> 00:04:50.360 C.S. Lewis, I mentioned this in December. 00:04:50.459 --> 00:04:52.920 When he first became a Christian, he struggled with praise. 00:04:55.079 --> 00:04:57.720 But then he came to realize, what we're talking about now, 00:04:57.800 --> 00:04:58.980 that this is something that's essential. 00:04:59.180 --> 00:05:01.839 And he realized that people who do not praise, 00:05:01.879 --> 00:05:02.540 and he says this, 00:05:02.740 --> 00:05:04.379 are like people who've never been in love. 00:05:05.319 --> 00:05:06.860 They're like people who can't hear music. 00:05:07.800 --> 00:05:10.500 And they're like people who have never read a good book. 00:05:10.500 --> 00:05:14.720 In other words, praise is what we do for anything that we care about. 00:05:15.839 --> 00:05:17.439 And so when God asks for our praise, 00:05:17.540 --> 00:05:20.079 he's commanding us to do what we would do for anything else. 00:05:21.240 --> 00:05:24.000 And yet he's much more worthy of our praise. 00:05:26.740 --> 00:05:28.699 Now me explaining all of these things to you, 00:05:29.019 --> 00:05:30.620 and explaining how praise is part of our lives, 00:05:30.660 --> 00:05:32.079 does not make praise any easier. 00:05:33.720 --> 00:05:36.360 Praise is still a challenging and difficult concept. 00:05:36.360 --> 00:05:41.020 If you're like me, you don't necessarily wake up every Sunday morning, 00:05:41.180 --> 00:05:43.860 and your first thought when your alarm goes off is, 00:05:44.000 --> 00:05:46.080 I just can't wait until I can begin praising God. 00:05:47.740 --> 00:05:49.139 Now if you are one of those people, 00:05:49.660 --> 00:05:50.699 I'm glad for you. 00:05:51.759 --> 00:05:53.480 That's what God wants for all of us, 00:05:53.540 --> 00:05:54.920 and yet it's not something that's natural. 00:05:56.139 --> 00:05:58.980 We don't always find ourselves walking around in this world 00:05:58.980 --> 00:06:01.020 moved by praise for God. 00:06:03.800 --> 00:06:05.879 And so that's why God's given us these psalms. 00:06:05.879 --> 00:06:09.899 All the psalms of praise are answering the question of why God is so great. 00:06:11.100 --> 00:06:14.920 And they're also helping us understand how it is that we can stir up our hearts 00:06:14.920 --> 00:06:17.120 that we're filled with love and praise for God. 00:06:17.819 --> 00:06:20.079 I've talked a lot recently in previous psalms 00:06:20.079 --> 00:06:23.240 about having hope and trust and faith and confidence in God. 00:06:24.600 --> 00:06:26.019 These psalms certainly have that, 00:06:26.159 --> 00:06:29.360 but they're more about how we have love and celebration of God. 00:06:29.360 --> 00:06:32.560 How do we stir up praise for God 00:06:32.560 --> 00:06:36.460 so we appreciate Him and understand His greatness more than anything else? 00:06:37.420 --> 00:06:39.259 That's what this psalm is going to present to us. 00:06:39.379 --> 00:06:40.540 I've talked also in the past, 00:06:40.980 --> 00:06:41.680 it's been a while, 00:06:41.780 --> 00:06:44.759 but about the importance of bookends in the Bible. 00:06:44.879 --> 00:06:46.439 If you're reading a passage of Scripture 00:06:46.439 --> 00:06:47.960 and you see the same thing appear 00:06:47.960 --> 00:06:49.560 at the beginning and the end, 00:06:49.860 --> 00:06:51.560 Jesus does this in His parables sometimes, 00:06:51.560 --> 00:06:54.399 this is a way of saying this is the point of this passage. 00:06:55.759 --> 00:06:58.459 So I'm not going to bury the lead in Psalm 8. 00:06:58.980 --> 00:06:59.819 There's one point, 00:06:59.980 --> 00:07:02.040 it shows up in verses 1 and verse 9, 00:07:02.120 --> 00:07:03.339 very beginning and the very end, 00:07:03.840 --> 00:07:04.500 and it says, 00:07:04.560 --> 00:07:05.300 O Lord, our Lord, 00:07:05.340 --> 00:07:07.060 how majestic is Your name in all the earth. 00:07:07.060 --> 00:07:11.879 That's the bread to the sandwich of the psalm. 00:07:13.240 --> 00:07:15.339 And everything else is going to help us understand 00:07:15.339 --> 00:07:17.280 why God's name is majestic. 00:07:18.819 --> 00:07:19.579 This is like, 00:07:19.899 --> 00:07:21.340 if we come across psalms of praise, 00:07:21.980 --> 00:07:22.920 because there's many of them, 00:07:22.980 --> 00:07:25.259 it's like different reviews of the same product. 00:07:26.079 --> 00:07:27.560 If you go and look at something online, 00:07:27.680 --> 00:07:28.899 you might read many reviews, 00:07:29.019 --> 00:07:31.199 some of them are going to say the same thing over and over, 00:07:31.680 --> 00:07:34.340 so you understand this is very important about this product. 00:07:35.040 --> 00:07:36.379 Some of them are going to say different things. 00:07:36.379 --> 00:07:38.439 You might have one review that gives you a special insight. 00:07:38.579 --> 00:07:40.060 Same is true with the psalms of praise. 00:07:40.199 --> 00:07:41.319 Same is true with Psalm 8. 00:07:41.379 --> 00:07:43.399 It's going to tell us some of the things we saw in December, 00:07:43.719 --> 00:07:45.680 and it's going to tell us new things as well. 00:07:45.740 --> 00:07:49.779 It's going to help us understand why God is worth our praise. 00:07:50.719 --> 00:07:51.659 And what we can do, 00:07:51.719 --> 00:07:53.399 even when we don't feel like praising God, 00:07:53.459 strength, 00:13:00.180 --> 00:13:01.500 is saying what we've seen before, 00:13:01.620 --> 00:13:03.360 that God is a great king. 00:13:03.360 --> 00:13:06.259 It's easy to have 00:13:06.259 --> 00:13:08.019 a truncated theology 00:13:08.019 --> 00:13:09.159 where we just think 00:13:09.159 --> 00:13:11.100 of God as our redeemer 00:13:11.100 --> 00:13:12.659 and he certainly is that.
