And so today we are looking 00:00:10.160 --> 00:00:17.320 at Jesus's words here at the end of Matthew chapter 28, giving the church this commission 00:00:17.320 --> 00:00:22.960 to bring the gospel to the nations. And before we jump into this text, by way of introduction, 00:00:22.960 --> 00:00:28.839 I want to really mention the foundation that this commission really rests on. And it rests on some 00:00:28.839 --> 00:00:34.200 earlier words of Jesus that are found earlier in the book of Matthew and Matthew chapter 16, 00:00:34.519 --> 00:00:40.019 specifically verse 18. But I'm going to read verses 13 through 20 for us. And this is where Jesus 00:00:40.019 --> 00:00:45.519 is with his disciples. He's been traveling around. He's about to tell them that he's about, 00:00:45.620 --> 00:00:50.820 he's going to be going to Jerusalem where he will die on the cross. And he has this conversation with 00:00:50.820 --> 00:00:57.179 his disciples. Now, when Jesus came into the district of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, 00:00:57.179 --> 00:01:04.760 who do people say that the son of man is? And they said, some say John the Baptist, others say Elijah 00:01:04.760 --> 00:01:11.280 and others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets. He said to them, but who do you say that I am? 00:01:11.960 --> 00:01:18.340 And Simon Peter replied, you are the Christ, the son of the living God. And Jesus answered him, 00:01:18.439 --> 00:01:24.000 blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, 00:01:24.000 --> 00:01:29.340 but my father who is in heaven. And this is the key verse, verse 18. And I tell you, you are Peter. 00:01:29.579 --> 00:01:36.040 And on this rock, I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. 00:01:36.400 --> 00:01:40.719 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven and whatever you bind on earth will be bound in 00:01:40.719 --> 00:01:45.280 heaven. And whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Then he strictly charged the 00:01:45.280 --> 00:01:51.900 disciples to tell no one that he was the Christ. Now, some of these words are often, 00:01:52.960 --> 00:01:58.140 they seem mysterious to those who are reading this passage and they're thinking, you know, 00:01:58.320 --> 00:02:04.240 Jesus just declared, yes, you're right. I am the Christ. I am sent from my father. I am going to be 00:02:04.240 --> 00:02:09.020 building my church. But then he gives these words to his disciples of don't go and tell anyone that 00:02:09.020 --> 00:02:14.620 he's the Christ. How does that make any sense, Jesus? And ultimately this for Jesus was a timing issue. 00:02:14.620 --> 00:02:20.659 And he is going to now give this great commission at the end of the book of Matthew, 00:02:20.659 --> 00:02:26.580 where he is specifically telling his disciples, now is the time to go to all of the nations. Now 00:02:26.580 --> 00:02:31.700 is the time to be proclaiming me as the Christ, to be going and sharing this message of the gospel. 00:02:31.819 --> 00:02:38.620 It was not back in Matthew chapter 16. However, this foundational sentence that I will build my 00:02:38.620 --> 00:02:44.599 church, that is the key part in Jesus's words in Matthew chapter 16. Upon this confession, 00:02:44.620 --> 00:02:49.460 that Peter makes that you are the Christ, the son of living God, that rock, that foundational 00:02:49.460 --> 00:02:56.439 statement of who Christ is, Jesus is going to build his church. And ultimately the gates of hell will not 00:02:56.439 --> 00:03:02.580 be able to stand against the church. They cannot win this battle. And so that's the good news as we 00:03:02.580 --> 00:03:08.680 begin to look at this gospel, at this great commission of taking the gospel to the nations from Matthew 00:03:08.680 --> 00:03:14.980 chapter 28. And I want to look at four things today. There are four M's. I suppose we could 00:03:14.980 --> 00:03:21.719 have called this message the M&M's of the great commission. But there are four, four words here 00:03:21.719 --> 00:03:27.879 that I think ultimately stand out that lead us to understanding better this great commission and 00:03:27.879 --> 00:03:35.000 applying it in our own life. And the first one is the master, the master who gives this commission. 00:03:35.000 --> 00:03:39.580 We see this in these first few verses. Oftentimes we start reading the great commission in chapter 00:03:39.580 --> 00:03:46.939 in verse 19. I think that's a little bit premature, actually. I think we should back up to verse 16 and 00:03:46.939 --> 00:03:52.280 get the full context of what is happening as Jesus gives this commission. So what's happening here, 00:03:52.360 --> 00:03:57.819 these 11 disciples, that's the remaining group minus Judas, these 12 who had followed Jesus. 00:03:58.259 --> 00:04:03.159 They go to this mountain where Jesus has told them to go. He's told this to the women. He's revealed 00:04:03.159 --> 00:04:08.120 himself to the disciples at this point. He's been on earth for, you know, somewhere close to 40 days. 00:04:08.219 --> 00:04:13.960 This probably happened just before the ascension, somewhere around there. And so it's been almost 00:04:13.960 --> 00:04:20.079 40 days since the resurrection. And it says in verse 17, I think this is this verse has always stood out 00:04:20.079 --> 00:04:25.740 to me as pretty profound. It says, and when they saw him, they worshiped him, but some doubted. 00:04:25.740 --> 00:04:33.420 And I just think that these closest followers of Jesus who have witnessed miracle after miracle 00:04:33.420 --> 00:04:39.079 after miracle of Jesus, they watched him walk on the water. They watched him, you know, raise a little 00:04:39.079 --> 00:04:44.699 boy from death to life. They watched him call Lazarus out of the grave. They watched him heal lame 00:04:44.699 --> 00:04:49.939 person after lame person, blind person after blind person. They watched him do all of these great things. 00:04:49.939 --> 00:04:55.620 And then they saw him beaten by the Romans. They saw him hung on a cross and they saw him die. 00:04:55.800 --> 00:05:00.899 And now they've seen the risen Lord in the flesh. And yet we still get to this passage and it says 00:05:00.899 --> 00:05:06.759 they worshiped him. They know who he is. And yet still some doubted. There was still a little bit 00:05:06.759 --> 00:05:13.279 of doubt in their hearts. And I just say that by way of encouragement to us. When we find ourselves 00:05:13.279 --> 00:05:19.360 in these places where we might be doubting the promises of Jesus, we need to remember who this master 00:05:19.360 --> 00:05:24.960 is that gives us this great commission. He is the one who the father has given all things. He is the 00:05:24.960 --> 00:05:31.180 one who, uh, who he's about to say, I have all authority in heaven and on earth. Uh, think back 00:05:31.180 --> 00:05:36.180 to Psalm chapter two. This is one of the great messianic Psalms, Psalm chapter two in verses seven 00:05:36.180 --> 00:05:42.860 and eight. It says, I will tell of the decree. The Lord said unto me, you are my son. This is essentially 00:05:42.860 --> 00:05:51.280 God speaking to, uh, about the son, uh, Jesus. You are my son today. I have begotten you ask of me 00:05:51.280 --> 00:05:56.560 and I will make the nations, your heritage and the ends of the earth, your possession. 00:05:57.520 --> 00:06:05.759 The father has made the nations, Jesus's inheritance. He has given Jesus all of these things. That is the 00:06:05.759 --> 00:06:11.639 one who is giving us this commission to go and to make disciples of all the worlds. And so I think it's 00:06:11.639 --> 00:06:19.419 incredibly important that we recognize and understand who this master is that is giving us 00:06:19.419 --> 00:06:25.599 these words. Even these closest followers of Jesus struggled. Even these closest followers of Jesus 00:06:25.599 --> 00:06:31.800 had had some doubt in their life, despite seeing him die and seeing him raised from the dead. And so 00:06:31.800 --> 00:06:36.939 we should remember that, that we are not alone in this battle of taking the gospel to the nations. 00:06:36.939 --> 00:06:41.980 Jesus is there with us. That's certainly jumping ahead to the, the last verse. Jesus is right there 00:06:41.980 --> 00:06:47.680 with us. He is going to be with us to the ends of the age. And we have churches across this nation 00:06:47.680 --> 00:06:53.980 and ultimately across this world who are engaged in this battle with us to bring the gospel to all of 00:06:53.980 --> 00:07:01.159 the nations. So first we must recognize the authority of this master who gives us this commission, 00:07:01.160 --> 00:07:07.740 all authority in heaven and on earth has been given to him. And that is why he can say to his disciples 00:07:07.740 --> 00:07:17.240 what he's about to in verses 19 and 20. So the second thing that we see in this passage is the mandate 00:07:17.240 --> 00:07:24.500 that is given. So we have the master and now we have the mandate. And it's important to not miss 00:07:24.500 --> 00:07:31.779 what the mandate in these verses is. Now I am not going to give a Greek lesson in this message, 00:07:31.779 --> 00:07:38.699 but it is important to understand what words are the imperative is the imperative verb and what 00:07:38.699 --> 00:07:44.040 words are not the imperative verb in this passage. And so an imperative verb, you, you know what these 00:07:44.040 --> 00:07:48.800 are. These are the things that parents like to give the children, take out the trash, feed the dog. 00:07:48.800 --> 00:07:53.920 You know, these are the commands. So that's what we're going to see. There's one of those 00:07:53.920 --> 00:08:01.360 in all of these verses that we have just read. And that is the verb make disciples. That is the 00:08:01.360 --> 00:08:09.319 command. That is the mandate of these verses to make disciples of all the nations. And so let's look 00:08:09.319 --> 00:08:18.379 at what that is and what making disciples ultimately involves. Jesus gave us a perfect picture of how to do 00:08:18.379 --> 00:08:26.879 this in his earthly ministry. He spent essentially three-ish years calling 12 people to follow him 00:08:26.879 --> 00:08:33.279 closely. He had within that group of 12 people, he had three that were very close to Peter, James, 00:08:33.360 --> 00:08:39.279 and John. They followed him places that the other nine did not. And they got to witness up close and 00:08:39.279 --> 00:08:44.379 personal. They were the only ones that saw the, you know, the little girl raised from the dead. 00:08:44.379 --> 00:08:49.820 He left the other disciples out. They were the only ones who got to see Jesus transfigured up 00:08:49.820 --> 00:08:56.620 on the mount when, when he was transfigured and stood and heard the words of God speaking to him, 00:08:56.679 --> 00:09:03.100 telling him, this is my son with whom I am well pleased. Listen to him. And so Jesus gave us a 00:09:03.100 --> 00:09:08.980 picture of what it looks like to make disciples. And ultimately what that is, it is to spend time, 00:09:08.980 --> 00:09:16.120 time, time, time, and more time with these people that we are sharing the gospel with. 00:09:16.379 --> 00:09:22.659 It's inviting them into your life. It is sharing your life with them, letting them witness the ups and 00:09:22.659 --> 00:09:27.720 the downs, the good times where it's easy to follow Jesus and the hard times where it's difficult to 00:09:27.720 --> 00:09:33.360 follow Jesus and to witness all of those things in your life. The disciples got to see Jesus when he was 00:09:33.360 --> 00:09:38.800 worn out and weary and he just needed to take a step back and get away and pray to his father. 00:09:38.800 --> 00:09:44.419 They also got to see Jesus do amazing things and amazing miracles. And so the disciples got to 00:09:44.419 --> 00:09:50.120 witness Jesus's life for three years. And that is what disciple making ultimately looks like, 00:09:50.220 --> 00:09:57.440 inviting someone to be a part of your life and discovering the word of God, discovering who Jesus 00:09:57.440 --> 00:10:05.160 is with them. It involves time and lots of time, but no less than that. And there are lots of ways 00:10:05.160 --> 00:10:11.280 that can be done. Jesus ultimately did it with kind of a, he had this kind of four-step process. He, 00:10:11.840 --> 00:10:21.520 first through the gospels, I remember my, my, oh goodness, what was the, my biblical interpretation 00:10:21.519 --> 00:10:28.399 teacher taught us this. He had this kind of fourfold method. First it was come and watch what I do. 00:10:29.240 --> 00:10:37.079 And then it was come and help me do what I do. And then it was, let me help you do what I've been 00:10:37.079 --> 00:10:42.079 doing. And then it was go do what I do. And we saw this progression with the disciples through the 00:10:42.079 --> 00:10:46.220 gospel. First, it was just come and observe. Then it was come and participate a little bit. Then he, 00:10:46.279 --> 00:10:51.379 he goes and he sends them out with his help. And finally, he now is sending them to say, 00:10:51.379 --> 00:10:56.080 okay, you know, I'm, I'm going to be with you, but it's ultimately your responsibility now to go and 00:10:56.080 --> 00:11:02.379 make disciples among the nations. And so it's, it's teaching new believers how to do that same thing 00:11:02.379 --> 00:11:09.580 in our own lives. Paul was a great example of this. And he wrote in his last letter, 00:11:09.899 --> 00:11:15.759 uh, second Timothy, he wrote to Timothy and he gave them kind of what, what is often known as the 00:11:15.759 --> 00:11:20.299 four generations of discipleship. And in second Timothy chapter two, verse two, he said this, he says, 00:11:20.299 --> 00:11:26.659 what you have heard from me and the presence of many witnesses in trust to faithful men who will 00:11:26.659 --> 00:11:32.659 be able to teach others also. And what we see, there's four generations of Bible teaching happening. 00:11:32.799 --> 00:11:38.699 Paul we have as generation one. And so he writes to Timothy who is generation two, what you have 00:11:38.699 --> 00:11:44.439 heard me teach you in the presence of many faithful witnesses and trust to faithful men. So that's 00:11:44.439 --> 00:11:48.919 generation three, teach other people who will ultimately then be able to teach others. Also, 00:11:48.919 --> 00:11:55.079 that's what making disciples look like is disciples reproducing other disciples. Uh, there was no 00:11:55.079 --> 00:12:01.699 option that Jesus gave his followers to come and be one of his disciples and not be a fisher of men, 00:12:01.699 --> 00:12:09.019 uh, to not be a disciple maker. Uh, that was expected of all of those who would follow after him. Uh, and, 00:12:09.019 --> 00:12:14.919 and, you know, we could look all through the gospels to find evidence for this, but, um, I encourage you 00:12:14.919 --> 00:12:20.399 as you're reading the gospels, look, uh, at those commands and when he calls new followers, what he 00:12:20.399 --> 00:12:27.559 tells them to do. So it's to live our lives entirely for Christ to open up our lives and invite, uh, 00:12:27.559 --> 00:12:32.759 invite people to see how we are living our lives, see how we're reacting in difficult times, see how 00:12:32.759 --> 00:12:39.259 we're reacting, uh, when we receive the bad news that the family member is dying of cancer to, to see what 00:12:39.259 --> 00:12:44.019 it's like when we're elated and we get to see one of our, our children trust and obey the gospel for 00:12:44.019 --> 00:12:49.100 the first time to, to be able to witness all of those things. Uh, you can do it with your coworkers. 00:12:49.100 --> 00:12:53.980 You can do it with friends or family members. Certainly we do it with our children, uh, as godly 00:12:53.980 --> 00:13:00.000 parents, uh, instructing them and showing them what the gospel looks like as we live out our lives. 00:13:00.000 --> 00:13:07.220 And that is the mandate of this great commission to go, uh, to, to make disciples of all the nations. 00:13:07.779 --> 00:13:14.399 Now, the second part of our little mini Greek grammar lesson, uh, it relates to the third point. 00:13:14.440 --> 00:13:19.539 So we have the master of the mandate and third is the method that Jesus has given us. Thankfully, 00:13:19.740 --> 00:13:25.200 Jesus did not simply give us this command to go and make disciples of all the nations. Uh, that's a 00:13:25.200 --> 00:13:29.580 pretty phenomenal task. When we think about all the peoples of the earth, go and make 00:13:29.580 --> 00:13:34.200 disciples of all those people. When you think about what that entails, the thousands and thousands 00:13:34.200 --> 00:13:39.420 of people groups, you know, there's, you know, approximately 6,000 or so, maybe 7,000 people 00:13:39.420 --> 00:13:45.379 groups that don't even know who Jesus is today. Uh, but when we think about the enormity of this 00:13:45.379 --> 00:13:51.340 command that we are to take the gospel message to all of these people, uh, it seems like a, an 00:13:51.340 --> 00:13:57.360 impossible task. And yet Jesus did not simply give us the command with no guidance. He gave us the 00:13:57.360 --> 00:14:02.919 method to employ in making these disciples. Uh, this is like I said, this is the second 00:14:02.919 --> 00:14:08.620 part of our little Greek lesson here. There are three present active participles in the 00:14:08.620 --> 00:14:14.500 Greek. Uh, and these are ING type words. Uh, these are words like, well, the ones we're 00:14:14.500 --> 00:14:20.320 going to see going, baptizing, and teaching. Uh, and now oftentimes our translation, and even 00:14:20.320 --> 00:14:24.940 in fact, I'm not seeing any translation that doesn't translate the first word go. Uh, but the 00:14:24.940 --> 00:14:31.100 better translation for this word is probably actually, as you are going, make disciples 00:14:31.100 --> 00:14:36.860 of all the nations. It is a present active participle. It's meant to not just be this one 00:14:36.860 --> 00:14:42.880 thing that we do, not this one trip that we go on, uh, not this, uh, one time event, but 00:14:42.880 --> 00:14:47.980 rather it's a present active. That means it's an action that starts and it continues to happen, 00:14:47.980 --> 00:14:54.260 uh, in a repetitive ongoing manner. And so as we are going and what this most likely was 00:14:54.259 --> 00:14:59.500 understood from Jesus's disciples is as we are going about our life, you know, we're going 00:14:59.500 --> 00:15:03.939 to, we're going to be living our life after Jesus is ascended. We're going to be starting 00:15:03.939 --> 00:15:08.159 churches. We're going to be preaching the gospel in Jerusalem. Jesus no doubt probably 00:15:08.159 --> 00:15:12.840 knows that a persecution is going to, uh, to come upon the church. They're going to be 00:15:12.840 --> 00:15:17.639 scattered. Uh, people are going to be scattered to Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth 00:15:17.639 --> 00:15:23.340 ultimately. Uh, and as they are going, they are to bring this message of Christianity with 00:15:23.340 --> 00:15:28.399 them there to be, to, to be packing up and moving to, to be going about their business, 00:15:28.399 --> 00:15:33.540 to be going into the market, to be going to, to Walmart and Kroger. And, you know, it's not 00:15:33.540 --> 00:15:38.180 Kroger here in Colorado. It's King super, I guess, but, uh, you know, there to be, as they 00:15:38.180 --> 00:15:44.300 are living their life, be bringing this message of the gospel with them. Uh, that is step one 00:15:44.300 --> 00:15:52.019 of the method is going. And so as we find ourselves going about our life, whether that is, uh, near 00:15:52.019 --> 00:15:59.179 our home, maybe we will pack up one day and be going to Africa or the Middle East or Asia or South 00:15:59.179 --> 00:16:04.559 America, wherever it is, we find ourselves going. We're to be bringing the gospel message with us 00:16:04.559 --> 00:16:12.799 and making disciples. Now I heard this story many years ago. I heard it when I was in high school. 00:16:12.840 --> 00:16:17.439 And I think at that point it was like 30 something years old, but a story is told that I thought it 00:16:17.440 --> 00:16:23.580 just illustrated this point perfectly. Uh, it happened down in Florida, off the coast of Florida. 00:16:23.580 --> 00:16:31.320 And what happened was there were these two brothers who had taken out a, a small sailboat. 00:16:31.500 --> 00:16:36.160 Uh, and they were, they were going out and like one of the boys was a teenager. One of them was a 00:16:36.160 --> 00:16:40.920 little bit younger, maybe also a young teenager. And they had taken out this sailboat like they had 00:16:40.920 --> 00:16:46.060 done many times before. Uh, and as they were out sailing, they were having fun, but pretty soon, 00:16:46.059 --> 00:16:52.659 as can happen, storms can come in pretty quickly, uh, in the ocean. And so that's exactly what 00:16:52.659 --> 00:16:59.679 happened. A storm began to blow in and the waves began to get really choppy and the wind began to 00:16:59.679 --> 00:17:05.379 get a pretty erratic and they're off the coast a little ways. And, uh, and, uh, and things started 00:17:05.379 --> 00:17:11.079 looking really bad, really fast. Uh, people out on the shore, they began to kind of see this boat 00:17:11.079 --> 00:17:15.819 struggling out there and bobbing up and down. And pretty soon they saw this boat capsize. 00:17:16.059 --> 00:17:20.399 Uh, it flipped upside down just with all the waves and everything going on. And, you know, 00:17:20.399 --> 00:17:26.359 two relatively, you know, young people who were captaining the boat. Uh, and what happened was the, 00:17:26.480 --> 00:17:32.539 the older brother was able to, to get out and swim, uh, swim away from the boat. He caught on to, 00:17:32.539 --> 00:17:38.919 um, uh, to some debris, some kind of a life raft or something. Uh, but his other brother, uh, 00:17:38.919 --> 00:17:43.599 came up way, uh, pretty, pretty far out. Uh, he was carried by some waves and, 00:17:43.599 --> 00:17:49.259 and came up way over on the other side, uh, of this boat. Uh, there was nothing for him to hang 00:17:49.259 --> 00:17:54.279 on to, uh, and no way for him to, he was, he was really struggling. And so this older brother, 00:17:54.279 --> 00:17:59.439 uh, saw his younger brother over there and he, he said, you know, little brother, this way, 00:17:59.480 --> 00:18:04.419 little brother, uh, this way, come over here. And he began to shout to his younger brother. 00:18:04.419 --> 00:18:09.639 Meanwhile, the, the rescuers have seen this boat and they start to prepare a rescue boat and get out 00:18:09.640 --> 00:18:14.220 there. Uh, the little brother is over here swimming and he's struggling really hard. 00:18:14.420 --> 00:18:19.320 Uh, and the waves at this point, they're, they're really choppy. They'll splash over him and he comes 00:18:19.320 --> 00:18:25.000 down and he pops back up and, uh, he, he gets knocked down again. And pretty soon he's spluttering 00:18:25.000 --> 00:18:31.240 back up and just working as hard as he can to get over to his older brother. Meanwhile, his older brother 00:18:31.240 --> 00:18:36.560 is just screaming with all of his mind, this way, little brother, swim harder. You're almost here. 00:18:36.559 --> 00:18:43.399 Swim harder. You're almost here. His little brother swims and swims and he does the best 00:18:43.399 --> 00:18:49.579 that he can. But pretty soon a wave comes over this little brother and he never comes back 00:18:49.579 --> 00:18:55.960 up again. And when the rescuers get there, they saw this older brother hanging onto his 00:18:55.960 --> 00:19:02.720 life preserve with his arms down into the water saying, swim harder, little brother, swim 00:19:02.720 --> 00:19:11.160 harder. You're almost here. But his little brother didn't make it. And when I heard that message 00:19:11.160 --> 00:19:17.940 that I heard that story the first time I thought that is exactly what the church is doing. So 00:19:17.940 --> 00:19:24.000 many times we are like this older brother saying, you know, we have the message of the gospel. 00:19:24.140 --> 00:19:29.180 Lost people just come this way. We have the message of the gospel. Lost people just come this 00:19:29.180 --> 00:19:33.680 way. And lost people are out here. They're living their lives and they're struggling. 00:19:33.860 --> 00:19:38.400 They don't understand the gospel. They don't have a relationship with Christ. They may not 00:19:38.400 --> 00:19:42.600 have the Bible. They may not have one that they read regularly. And so they don't know 00:19:42.600 --> 00:19:46.600 the truth and they are finding their way through life and they're getting knocked down and they're 00:19:46.600 --> 00:19:50.700 rising back up and they're getting knocked down. All the while the church has the answer 00:19:50.700 --> 00:19:55.340 over here. We have the gospel message. And I thought to myself when I heard that story, 00:19:55.339 --> 00:20:00.099 you know, I've got three little siblings, you know, many of you probably have siblings. And I just 00:20:00.099 --> 00:20:07.799 thought, you know, why didn't he leave his his little life reserve and go get his little brother 00:20:07.799 --> 00:20:16.000 and drag him to safety? And too often we as the church, we we stay in our walls and we stay in our 00:20:16.000 --> 00:20:23.539 groups and we don't go out to rescue the lost that Jesus has put in front of us. We don't bring out 00:20:23.539 --> 00:20:29.379 the message of the gospel so that they can hear it. Those are the means that God has appointed for 00:20:29.379 --> 00:20:39.799 lost people to come to him is the church going with this gospel message. And I hope that that we 00:20:39.799 --> 00:20:47.159 might see from this passage and see in our own lives opportunities where we can leave our safe places, 00:20:47.460 --> 00:20:53.200 our life reserves and our life reps, and that we might be able to go out with the gospel message 00:20:53.200 --> 00:20:59.460 taking it to the lost who are out there struggling. They're drowning and they just need this message 00:20:59.460 --> 00:21:05.580 of the truth that Christ wants. You know, the Bible tells us that that God is not willing that any 00:21:05.580 --> 00:21:10.720 should perish. His desire is that all should come to repentance. And so we should sow that message of 00:21:10.720 --> 00:21:15.819 the gospel widely, expecting him to draw those who who are his to himself. 00:21:18.779 --> 00:21:27.579 So that is going. The second thing in this method is to be baptizing. So as we are going, we make 00:21:27.579 --> 00:21:37.600 disciples, we we teach them the gospel. And as they trust in Christ, we're to be baptizing them in the name 00:21:37.599 --> 00:21:42.399 of the Father and the Son of the Holy Spirit. What that does is it helps them to identify to the world 00:21:42.399 --> 00:21:50.899 that they now belong to Christ. It's it's it's the it's them saying, I now belong to Jesus. He is my Lord 00:21:50.899 --> 00:22:00.779 and I am following him. We're going and we're baptizing and we're teaching. That's the third step 00:22:00.779 --> 00:22:07.779 of the method going, baptizing and teaching. And notice, you know, sometimes we can get caught up 00:22:07.779 --> 00:22:14.039 with just teaching facts and figures and and things like that. But ultimately, what is it that we're 00:22:14.039 --> 00:22:19.660 supposed to be teaching? Notice what Jesus says in verse 20 here, teaching them to obey or observe 00:22:19.660 --> 00:22:26.480 all that I have commanded you. We're to teach them the law of God. That's what you know what we do when 00:22:26.480 --> 00:22:31.319 we when we have our our time where we've been having we've been having the confession. We've 00:22:31.319 --> 00:22:36.480 been reading through the Ten Commands. We've been reading through this moral law of God that he has 00:22:36.480 --> 00:22:41.960 given that is unchanging from before all of eternity through through the time where this world will pass 00:22:41.960 --> 00:22:46.440 away and we'll have the new heavens and new earth. These are the things that do not change culture to 00:22:46.440 --> 00:22:51.620 culture, people to people. They are God's will and God's moral law. We see that throughout the Old 00:22:51.619 --> 00:22:57.000 Testament, we see Christ repeat it in the Gospels. And that is what we are to be teaching 00:22:57.000 --> 00:23:05.039 as we are going and making disciples. Teach them the law and the Gospel. And not just simply 00:23:05.039 --> 00:23:09.919 memorize, you know, memorize the order of the books of the Bible, you know, memorize these things, 00:23:09.959 --> 00:23:16.139 but teach them to obey the Gospel and the law that he has given. We're called to teach obedience 00:23:16.140 --> 00:23:23.759 to all that Christ has commanded. So we have this master, this great master who is Jesus, 00:23:23.880 --> 00:23:28.640 who has all authority in heaven and on earth, who God is, who God the Father has given as the 00:23:28.640 --> 00:23:35.080 inheritance of all the peoples of the earth. We have the mandate to make disciples of all the nations. 00:23:35.080 --> 00:23:41.980 And we have this method of how to do it. So by going, not staying, but by going and baptizing and 00:23:41.980 --> 00:23:48.880 teaching. And last, what we see in this passage, it's somewhat assumed, but it's part of this 00:23:48.880 --> 00:23:54.960 teaching them to obey all that I've commanded, is the message. What is this message that we should 00:23:54.960 --> 00:24:02.120 be taking to the nations? And ultimately, that is the Gospel. Ultimately, that is all that we have 00:24:02.120 --> 00:24:10.259 contained within God's Word. We're to teach the full spectrum of God's Word, not to hunt and pick the 00:24:10.259 --> 00:24:17.180 things that we prefer over other passages, but the full gamut of God's Word is what we are to take 00:24:17.180 --> 00:24:24.119 as our message to the nations. We're to teach the truth of God's Word, the unaltered, undistorted truth 00:24:24.119 --> 00:24:31.900 of the entirety of the law and the Gospel. But also, we are to teach this truth in love. Sometimes, 00:24:31.900 --> 00:24:44.320 the church can probably, in good and well-meaning ways, we can be somewhat jerks, for lack of a better 00:24:44.320 --> 00:24:52.660 word. That is never the method that Christ encourages throughout all His Word. Rather, what He says is, 00:24:52.880 --> 00:24:58.460 those who will persecute you, you're supposed to pray for them. Those who would take from you, 00:24:58.460 --> 00:25:03.960 you're supposed to give them more. Those who would hit you, you're supposed to let them hit you again. 00:25:04.500 --> 00:25:11.740 And so, we're not to take the truth in a hateful, ungodly, unwinsome way, but rather, 00:25:11.840 --> 00:25:17.600 we're to take the truth in love with grace, just as Jesus did. He was full of grace and truth. 00:25:18.900 --> 00:25:22.299 And we should do that same thing. 00:25:22.299 --> 00:25:30.700 There's one other passage in Matthew that I want to look at as we close. 00:25:32.859 --> 00:25:39.779 And this is ultimately just before Jesus' arrest and His crucifixion, His death. 00:25:40.740 --> 00:25:42.759 It comes from Matthew chapter 24. 00:25:42.759 --> 00:25:50.579 This is another, just as I spoke about yesterday morning, this is another one of those 00:25:50.579 --> 00:25:58.140 assurances that this is what is going to happen. We can be assured that the Great Commission will 00:25:58.140 --> 00:26:05.619 succeed. God's mission will not fail. And we see that once again in yet another passage in Matthew 00:26:05.619 --> 00:26:11.239 chapter 24. I'm going to read verses 3 through 14. It says this, 00:26:11.299 --> 00:26:15.899 As He sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to have privately saying, 00:26:16.459 --> 00:26:24.079 Tell us, when will these things be? And when will the sign of your coming in the end of the age? 00:26:24.500 --> 00:26:28.059 And Jesus answered them, See that no one leads you astray. 00:26:28.739 --> 00:26:31.559 For many will come in My name, saying, I am the Christ. 00:26:31.559 --> 00:26:37.259 And they will lead many astray.
