The first verse of this psalm. 00:00:14.919 --> 00:00:24.719 Be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me, for in you my soul takes refuge. In the shadow of your wings 00:00:24.719 --> 00:00:30.439 I will take refuge till the storms of destruction pass by. 00:00:33.700 --> 00:00:42.019 Well, the context of this psalm and the psalm previous to it is that David is fleeing from Saul. 00:00:42.939 --> 00:00:49.719 King Saul is persecuting him. He is seeking to kill him. And we're told at the beginning in the 00:00:49.719 --> 00:01:00.619 title of Psalm 56 that he wrote this psalm when the Philistines seized him in Gath and he pretended 00:01:00.619 --> 00:01:06.739 to be mad. And the king of Gath said, well, what need have I of madmen? And so he sent him away. 00:01:06.739 --> 00:01:14.879 We find that in 1 Samuel 21. We're told of this psalm that he is fleeing from Saul and that he is 00:01:14.879 --> 00:01:20.899 hiding in a cave. Now, some of you will know that we're told of two instances, at least, 00:01:21.299 --> 00:01:26.640 where David was hiding in a cave. The first is in the very next chapter, 1 Samuel 22, 00:01:27.219 --> 00:01:35.939 where he's hiding in the cave of Adullam. And we're told that lots of his friends go out to him there, 00:01:35.939 --> 00:01:46.900 those who are on his side, and that they meet with him. And there he is hiding. And then in 1 Samuel 24, 00:01:47.400 --> 00:01:53.799 we find him hiding again, this time in a cave in En Gedi. Now, it was this time that Saul, who was 00:01:53.799 --> 00:01:59.039 pursuing him with his own army, that Saul actually came into the cave in which he was. 00:01:59.040 --> 00:02:06.140 And that David managed to cut off a bit of his robe without him noticing. And then Saul went back 00:02:06.140 --> 00:02:13.860 out again, and he held up the robe. And perhaps there's a reference to that at the end of verse 6 00:02:13.860 --> 00:02:22.060 here. But David, obviously, this was a difficult time, a dangerous time. And he refers to it in this 00:02:22.060 --> 00:02:29.340 first verse at the end of it as the storms of destruction, the storms of destruction. Now, 00:02:29.560 --> 00:02:35.319 that's a word that's very difficult to translate. It's actually one word in the original language. 00:02:35.319 --> 00:02:43.219 It's often translated until the calamities pass by. But the word can mean destruction, it can mean 00:02:43.219 --> 00:02:51.879 troubles, it can mean evils, or even wickednesses. It tends to speak of these trials, 00:02:52.060 --> 00:02:58.020 that we have in life, that are caused by the sin of other people, by the evil of other people, 00:02:58.280 --> 00:03:04.199 the trials that other people bring upon us. And that was certainly the case here with David, 00:03:04.199 --> 00:03:09.879 wasn't it? And he goes on to expand upon these calamities, these storms that he's going through, 00:03:10.319 --> 00:03:16.819 where he says in verse 4, my soul is in the midst of lions. And he's not speaking of literal lions, 00:03:17.240 --> 00:03:22.039 he's speaking about his enemies, who are pursuing him, and slandering him, and trying to kill him. 00:03:22.060 --> 00:03:29.680 I lie down amid fiery beasts, the children of man whose teeth are spears and arrows, whose tongues 00:03:29.680 --> 00:03:36.400 are sharp swords, speaking of the deceit and the slander that they're speaking. He goes on to say in 00:03:36.400 --> 00:03:44.039 verse 6, they said a net for my steps, my soul was bowed down, speaking of his inner frame of mind. 00:03:44.039 --> 00:03:51.799 They dug a pit in my way, but they have fallen into it themselves. So he's speaking here of the 00:03:51.799 --> 00:03:58.159 blazing wrath and malice of those who hate him, those who are trying to bring him down, those who are 00:03:58.159 --> 00:04:03.659 trying to catch him out, who are trying to ruin his reputation, who are trying to entrap him, who are 00:04:03.659 --> 00:04:10.000 trying to destroy him. That's what he's speaking about. And so he is here in this cave, either in 00:04:10.000 --> 00:04:18.839 Adullam or in En Gedi, dark cave, far from home, far from the comforts of home. The future is uncertain, 00:04:19.379 --> 00:04:27.800 his name, his reputation is in tatters, and his life is in danger. And the friends that he has, 00:04:28.000 --> 00:04:35.459 they are few. He is here in the midst of life's calamities, or in the midst of life's storms. 00:04:35.459 --> 00:04:43.680 And you know, David's context being written 3,000 years ago, hiding in a cave somewhere near 00:04:43.680 --> 00:04:50.979 Palestine or in it, his context can seem so far removed from our own context. And yet the general 00:04:50.979 --> 00:04:59.339 principle remains that we are not strangers in this life to storms and to calamities as well. 00:04:59.339 --> 00:05:06.619 And you notice that he speaks in the plural, the storms of destruction, or the calamities, or the 00:05:06.619 --> 00:05:14.699 troubles, or the evils. It's not just one, but there are many difficulties in this life. Life is 00:05:14.699 --> 00:05:23.839 full of trials, full of hardships, full of troubles, sickness of body, sickness of mind, for yourself, 00:05:23.839 --> 00:05:33.939 for those around you. Fears within and foes without. We might not have enemies chasing us into caves and 00:05:33.939 --> 00:05:40.159 wanting to kill us. But that's not to say that we don't have enemies. Enemies who are trying to 00:05:40.159 --> 00:05:48.699 swallow us up. Spiritual enemies. The great enemy of sin and of Satan. The enemy of your heart, which is 00:05:48.699 --> 00:05:56.920 deceitful. The enemy of addiction. The enemy of discouragement. The enemy of disappointment. The 00:05:56.920 --> 00:06:04.620 enemy of the mind. These things are real to many of you. And you know, friends, these troubles can start 00:06:04.620 --> 00:06:12.159 young as well. We tend to think of those in older age facing many of these troubles and these trials. 00:06:12.680 --> 00:06:17.819 But you know, you can be here tonight and it's good to see so many young out. But perhaps you're not 00:06:17.819 --> 00:06:28.599 a stranger to these troubles either. Fallouts in school. Being slandered in a friend group. Anxiety 00:06:28.599 --> 00:06:36.000 about work, about grades, about your future. Anxiety even in the home perhaps. Just because you're 00:06:36.000 --> 00:06:41.980 young doesn't mean that you don't have enemies in your mind and in your heart. It doesn't mean that 00:06:41.980 --> 00:06:49.100 there aren't calamities and storms that you go through and that surround you. And you know, a godlier 00:06:49.100 --> 00:06:59.640 man than most of us, a man named Jacob, he even himself said at one time in his experience, 00:07:00.140 --> 00:07:06.860 all these things are against me. Everything appears to be going wrong. Everything that could have gone 00:07:06.860 --> 00:07:14.080 wrong has gone wrong. I've lost my son. I know I've lost another one. And I'm in danger of losing a 00:07:14.080 --> 00:07:21.280 third. My wife, I am bereaved of her as well. We're in the midst of a famine. Very few things seem to be 00:07:21.280 --> 00:07:27.180 right. And all these things appear to be against me. And God appears to be against me. Have you ever felt 00:07:27.180 --> 00:07:34.340 like that? You know, it's not a good thing to feel like that. And there's many respects in which 00:07:34.340 --> 00:07:42.379 Jacob was wrong to think like that. But the fact that Jacob did think like that, it reminds us that 00:07:42.379 --> 00:07:49.920 Christians, true Christians, godly Christians, can entertain these kind of thoughts and think that 00:07:49.920 --> 00:07:56.800 everything is against us. And indeed that God himself is against us. Because life can be hard, 00:07:56.939 --> 00:08:02.420 friends. Did we not sing in the beginning of our worship tonight, what time my heart is overwhelmed 00:08:02.420 --> 00:08:10.600 and in perplexity. Perplexing situations in the home, perplexing situations in the community, 00:08:10.600 --> 00:08:17.379 in the workplace, in the church. What time my heart is overwhelmed and in perplexity. You know, 00:08:17.379 --> 00:08:24.079 if we go back to Psalm 55, the psalmist says in verse 5 that he says, fear and trembling, 00:08:24.839 --> 00:08:35.019 they came upon me. Horror, it overwhelms me. And how does he respond? He says, I said to myself, 00:08:35.620 --> 00:08:42.100 oh that I had wings like a dove. And then what would I do? I would fly away. I would get away from my 00:08:42.100 --> 00:08:47.200 situation. Fly away from these trials. Then I would be at rest. Yes, I should wonder. 00:08:47.200 --> 00:08:53.160 I should lodge in the wilderness. I would hurry to find a shelter from the raging wind and the 00:08:53.160 --> 00:08:59.940 tempest. Have you ever felt like that? Well, this was David, the sweet psalmist of Israel. 00:09:00.360 --> 00:09:05.440 The man who was a man after God's own heart. And he felt at one time in his experience that he just 00:09:05.440 --> 00:09:14.080 wanted to escape. To escape it all. To flee. But how does David respond to the storms of destruction 00:09:14.080 --> 00:09:22.160 in this psalm? And that's what I really want us to consider. In a word, he responds by trusting in 00:09:22.160 --> 00:09:30.320 the Lord. And in a word, that's how we are to respond to the storms and to the calamities of life. 00:09:30.540 --> 00:09:38.879 By trusting in the Lord. He says, for in you my soul takes refuge. And that's a very literal way of 00:09:38.879 --> 00:09:46.720 translating it. That word takes refuge is often translated as trust. In you my soul trusts. In you 00:09:46.720 --> 00:09:55.120 my soul takes refuge. That's how he responds. But you know, it's easy to say it, isn't it? Things are 00:09:55.120 --> 00:10:02.679 going badly. Life is hard. What do I do? Well, just trust in the Lord. Yes, but what does that mean? 00:10:02.679 --> 00:10:08.620 What does it look like for you to trust in the Lord today in your old age? What does it look like 00:10:08.620 --> 00:10:15.479 for you as a teenager today in your own circumstances to trust in the Lord? Well, you know, this psalm 00:10:15.479 --> 00:10:24.919 goes a good way towards explaining to us what trust looks like or how trust acts. And I want us to 00:10:24.919 --> 00:10:32.839 consider maybe five things just briefly. And the first is that trust takes itself to prayer. 00:10:33.659 --> 00:10:40.039 When you trust in the Lord, you pray to the Lord. And here we find, well, the whole psalm is a prayer. 00:10:40.459 --> 00:10:48.639 But we find a cry out to the Lord, be merciful to me, O God, be merciful to me. Now, the situation is 00:10:48.639 --> 00:10:56.039 desperate. And the desperation of a situation is reflected in the ardency of his prayer. He prays 00:10:56.039 --> 00:11:01.439 desperately as well. He doesn't just say, have mercy upon me. He says, have mercy upon me, O God, 00:11:01.500 --> 00:11:09.159 have mercy upon me. It's not enough to say it once. He's, as it were, boiling over and with a sense of 00:11:09.159 --> 00:11:18.399 his need, a sense of his desperation. Verse two, I will cry out to God most high. You know, there's times 00:11:18.399 --> 00:11:26.100 when it's not enough to be casual and to speak in a calm voice or in a whisper to God. But we need to 00:11:26.100 --> 00:11:33.779 bow before him and to cry, or as it often is, to groan before him and to say, Lord, I am at my 00:11:33.779 --> 00:11:43.240 woods end. And to whom else can I go? To whom else? My situation is impossible and I need help. And that's 00:11:43.240 --> 00:11:50.680 what he's asking for here. When he says, have mercy upon me, he's saying, help me. Help me, Lord, because I 00:11:50.680 --> 00:11:57.860 cannot help myself and I cannot see help coming from any other quarter. Help me. Have you ever found 00:11:57.860 --> 00:12:05.000 yourself in that situation where you can't see a way out of the storm that you are going through, of the 00:12:05.000 --> 00:12:10.379 trial that is in your experience? You can't see a way out and all you can do is go to God and say, Lord, 00:12:10.379 --> 00:12:15.620 Lord, help me. But you know, the language is important. Although the sense of it is, Lord, 00:12:15.720 --> 00:12:22.860 help me. It's not what he says. He says, have mercy upon me. And that's interesting, isn't it? 00:12:23.340 --> 00:12:28.659 Because he's not saying, well, God, help me because you owe me a favor. And you know, I've been going to 00:12:28.659 --> 00:12:33.019 church all these years and saying my prayers and reading the Bible, and I'm a member in Kenneth 00:12:33.019 --> 00:12:40.019 Street. So, Lord, help me. That's not what he says. He doesn't say, I deserve your help. 00:12:41.000 --> 00:12:48.000 He prays for mercy. For mercy. Not that God would give him what he deserves. Because what does he 00:12:48.000 --> 00:12:54.600 deserve? He deserves to be given over to his enemies. The wages of sin is death. He deserves 00:12:54.600 --> 00:13:02.519 the calamity, the storm of destruction. But that's not what he prays for. He rather, he prays for the 00:13:02.519 --> 00:13:08.720 deliverance that he doesn't deserve. That's what he prays for. Have mercy upon me. I don't deserve 00:13:08.720 --> 00:13:14.779 anything, Lord. I don't deserve to be brought out of this situation that I'm in. I don't deserve life 00:13:14.779 --> 00:13:20.820 to be any better than it is. But Lord, take pity upon me. And have mercy upon me. 00:13:20.820 --> 00:13:30.500 We live in a generation where more and more we are trained to entitlement, to think that we are 00:13:30.500 --> 00:13:37.320 entitled to help, to think that we are entitled to support. And don't get me wrong, there are many 00:13:37.320 --> 00:13:43.780 respects in which we are entitled to that. But, you know, before God, we're not entitled to anything. 00:13:43.779 --> 00:13:52.259 As sinners, we deserve nothing. Nothing at all. And as such, this must always be the basis of our 00:13:52.259 --> 00:13:57.879 prayers for help. Not that God would give us our due. Not that he would give us what we deserve. 00:13:58.120 --> 00:14:06.299 What do we deserve? What do you deserve from God? Nothing. What do I deserve? Nothing. But what we 00:14:06.299 --> 00:14:12.980 pray is that God would have mercy upon us. That he would take pity upon us. What we're doing is we're 00:14:12.980 --> 00:14:20.680 applying to the nature of God, to the character of God. We remind ourselves that he is a God who is 00:14:20.680 --> 00:14:27.560 full of compassion and gracious. That he is long-suffering and that he is plenteous in mercy 00:14:27.560 --> 00:14:33.820 and truth. We remind ourselves of that and we take ourselves to that God and we say to him, 00:14:34.100 --> 00:14:41.019 God, you are merciful. Have mercy upon me. God, you are full of pity. What a situation I find myself in. 00:14:41.019 --> 00:14:48.779 Take pity upon me. Take pity upon me in this situation. And so, the soul that trusts in the 00:14:48.779 --> 00:14:55.340 Lord is a soul that prays to God. But secondly, the soul that trusts in God is also the soul that seeks 00:14:55.340 --> 00:15:04.860 protection from God. He says, for in you my soul takes refuge. Or takes shelter, you might translate it. 00:15:04.860 --> 00:15:16.480 In the shadow of your wings I will take refuge. He's saying, have mercy upon me for in you I trust. In you 00:15:16.480 --> 00:15:23.440 my soul puts its trust. He's laying hold of God's promises. He's laying hold of God's word. 00:15:25.080 --> 00:15:31.039 And what God has said in his word. And the promises that he has made in his word to those who trust him. 00:15:31.039 --> 00:15:37.679 We were singing that, weren't we? Psalm 37. Set thou thy trust upon the Lord and be thou doing good. 00:15:38.019 --> 00:15:44.259 And so, thou in the land shalt dwell and verily have food. And so, well, who's going to take you into 00:15:44.259 --> 00:15:50.740 that land? Who's going to feed you in that land? Well, God is because you trust in him. And he is the 00:15:50.740 --> 00:15:59.500 rewarder of them that diligently seek him. And so he says, in the shadow of your wings I will take refuge. 00:15:59.500 --> 00:16:05.000 What's he referring to here? Well, it's actually very difficult to say. And there's two options. 00:16:06.720 --> 00:16:12.059 The first is that, you remember, the Ark of the Covenant was overshadowed by the wings of the cherubim. 00:16:12.659 --> 00:16:18.940 And God himself dwelt there in the presence of the Ark. And some say that that's what it's referring to. 00:16:19.340 --> 00:16:22.259 And that he's placing his trust in God's covenant. 00:16:22.259 --> 00:16:29.679 And in God's nature as a God who is holy. And in God's word. And in God's mercy. 00:16:29.679 --> 00:16:39.659 But most commentators say that what he's actually referring to is the little chicken or the chick 00:16:39.659 --> 00:16:46.379 that takes shelter under the wings of the mother hen. And taking shelter under the wings of the 00:16:46.379 --> 00:16:52.579 mother hen, it's protected from the elements, the cold and the rain, the frost and the snow. 00:16:52.580 --> 00:16:59.860 And it's also protected from predators. Those who wouldn't dare attack a hen. But a wee chick, yeah. 00:17:00.379 --> 00:17:05.039 They would attack that. And so they go in and they hide under the wings of the mother hen. 00:17:05.420 --> 00:17:11.460 And there they find refuge. There there is safety. There there is warmth. There there is protection. 00:17:11.460 --> 00:17:15.220 And it's quite a wonderful thing. And that's where David places himself in the midst of his calamities. 00:17:49.840 --> 00:17:55.460 He doesn't seek refuge in the cave. Yes, he's gone to hide in a cave. He's not going to stand out in the open. 00:17:55.779 --> 00:17:59.019 He doesn't trust in the cave.
