The perception is that the rising tide is that of darkness and that the world is getting worse. 00:00:19.359 --> 00:00:27.920 We feel political instability. We feel economic stress. We look around the world and we see war and famine and suffering. 00:00:27.920 --> 00:00:37.359 And here in the U.S. we have a sense that our society is growing meaner, more divided, more stressed. 00:00:37.359 --> 00:00:48.079 Now, I don't know if this is true. I've lived long enough, and some of you have lived longer than me, to know that the world has ups and downs. 00:00:48.079 --> 00:00:53.600 In the 70s, there was an economic downturn and potential of nuclear war with Russia. 00:00:53.600 --> 00:01:01.600 In 2001, there was 9-11, and it felt like the world was an unsafe place. 00:01:01.600 --> 00:01:05.920 In 2008, we had an economic crisis. In 2020, we had a global pandemic. 00:01:05.920 --> 00:01:11.120 So, we've certainly not necessarily gotten into something new and different. 00:01:11.120 --> 00:01:19.200 Maybe its forms are a little different, but certainly the tide continues to come in and out. 00:01:19.200 --> 00:01:26.640 But the darkness still seems to be there. And we don't like that because we want things to be getting better. 00:01:27.120 --> 00:01:34.320 We have this hope that there is… that we live in a world that there is progress, that the trajectory is better and better. 00:01:35.120 --> 00:01:40.960 But careful view of history might say that this is not necessarily true. Certainly, we have gotten better. 00:01:40.959 --> 00:01:50.719 I'm really thankful for indoor plumbing, refrigeration, and antibiotics. You know, these are great progresses that didn't exist years ago. 00:01:52.399 --> 00:02:02.560 But the world has continued in darkness. Humans continue to be selfish. They continue to start wars and to hurt one another. 00:02:02.560 --> 00:02:07.120 They continue to fight for their own goodness and gain. 00:02:09.199 --> 00:02:16.159 And friends, it's not just in the world that we live in we feel this, but in the community of the church as well. 00:02:17.199 --> 00:02:23.840 We feel these ebbs and flows. At one level, the church is bigger and more global than it's ever been. 00:02:23.840 --> 00:02:29.599 The church has advanced in all sorts of places, and the gospel is being heard across the world. 00:02:29.599 --> 00:02:43.599 And yet we also see the worst of the church, don't we? Sexual abuse, financial misconduct, doctrinal compromise. 00:02:46.240 --> 00:02:57.840 How much we feel at times like the church broadly is the proverbial frog in the kettle, becoming more and more like our culture rather than being distinctive as God's people. 00:02:59.599 --> 00:03:07.840 So, how do we manage this? How do we think about living with God in light of this? 00:03:08.879 --> 00:03:21.099 Well, I believe that our passage today will address this. We're in 2 Chronicles. We'll be in chapter 21 and a little bit in 22 as we look at the stories of the next kings. 00:03:21.099 --> 00:03:27.740 And as you turn there, if you want to turn there in your Bible, it's page 347, 2 Chronicles 21. 00:03:27.740 --> 00:03:35.000 But remember the context that Chronicles was written not during the time of the kings of Israel, but after it, right? 00:03:35.099 --> 00:03:44.219 After, in fact, the exile of Israel when Jerusalem was destroyed and the people were taken away, and then the return from exile. 00:03:44.219 --> 00:03:56.439 And Chronicles was written to those people who had come back, and they knew about God's judgment on the sin of Israel in the exile. 00:03:56.860 --> 00:04:01.439 God had seen that His people had forsaken Him. 00:04:01.780 --> 00:04:03.759 They had not trusted Him politically. 00:04:04.079 --> 00:04:07.620 They had not worshipped Him as He called them to. 00:04:07.620 --> 00:04:15.480 They did not. They worshipped other gods instead, and they failed to show the kingdom ethic that God had called them to live. 00:04:15.659 --> 00:04:19.920 And for all these reasons, God said, enough, I'm going to send you into exile. 00:04:20.360 --> 00:04:25.660 And yet He brought them back, and now the people then are wondering, what now? 00:04:26.340 --> 00:04:30.500 Now we live in a world that seems much less glorious than the kingdom before. 00:04:30.759 --> 00:04:34.180 We're not a kingdom now. We're a vassal state of Persia. 00:04:34.180 --> 00:04:41.079 We don't have a king on a throne. We are led by rulers and priests, but we don't have independence. 00:04:43.439 --> 00:04:47.740 How can they be God's kingdom in that world? 00:04:48.160 --> 00:04:54.319 How can they live as God's people in the face of such disappointment and such uncertainty? 00:04:54.319 --> 00:05:05.360 The Chronicle writes in the chapters we're going to look at today about a time of great darkness in the kingdom before the exile. 00:05:05.860 --> 00:05:12.500 And He gives answers to that post-exilic community and to us as how we live. 00:05:12.659 --> 00:05:16.639 So let's pray together and ask God for help as we look at His Word this morning. 00:05:16.959 --> 00:05:17.959 Let's pray together. 00:05:17.959 --> 00:05:22.620 Lord, we thank You for this morning. We thank You for Your Word. 00:05:23.060 --> 00:05:28.560 And Lord, we thank You that Your Spirit, Your Spirit that has inspired this Word to be written down, 00:05:28.639 --> 00:05:31.000 that has preserved Your Word through the centuries, 00:05:31.639 --> 00:05:39.859 that Lord, now Your Spirit that now illumines Your Word, makes it clear to us so that we might understand it. 00:05:39.939 --> 00:05:43.240 Lord, we pray for Your help this morning. 00:05:43.240 --> 00:05:49.480 I pray that I might speak clearly. Amen. 00:05:59.759 --> 00:06:03.759 So as we read this story, it's not a particularly uplifting one. 00:06:03.879 --> 00:06:05.460 We're going to look at three things. 00:06:05.560 --> 00:06:11.139 We will see the darkness of sin, the consequences of sin, and then the remedy for sin. 00:06:11.139 --> 00:06:16.899 So there's your outline if you're an outline taker, the darkness of sin, the consequences of sin, and the remedy of sin. 00:06:16.979 --> 00:06:21.879 And rather than reading through the whole story at once, I'm going to read it in chunks as we go through it. 00:06:22.019 --> 00:06:28.219 So first, we're going to look at the first six verses and also verse 11 of chapter 21. 00:06:28.379 --> 00:06:29.759 Let's read those together. 00:06:30.399 --> 00:06:33.399 This is the story of Jehoram. 00:06:34.560 --> 00:06:36.560 So this is what God's Word says. 00:06:36.560 --> 00:06:39.079 2 Chronicles 21, verse 1. 00:06:39.079 --> 00:07:02.819 All these were the sons of Jehoshaphat, the king of Judah. 00:07:02.819 --> 00:07:09.740 Their father gave them great gifts of silver and gold and valuable possessions together with fortified cities in Judah. 00:07:10.300 --> 00:07:14.199 But he gave the kingdom to Jehoram because he was the firstborn. 00:07:15.219 --> 00:07:23.639 When Jehoram had ascended the throne of his father and was established, he killed all his brothers with the sword and also some of the princes of Israel. 00:07:24.399 --> 00:07:30.639 Jehoram was 32 years old when he became king, and he reigned eight years in Jerusalem. 00:07:30.639 --> 00:07:39.779 And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel as the house of Ahab had done, for the daughter of Ahab was his wife. 00:07:40.379 --> 00:07:44.120 And he did what was evil in the sight of the Lord. 00:07:44.639 --> 00:07:46.579 And then skipping down to verse 11. 00:07:47.120 --> 00:07:57.599 Moreover, he made high places in the hill country of Judah and led the inhabitants of Jerusalem into whoredom and made Judah go astray. 00:07:57.600 --> 00:08:06.020 Well, here's a king that we're not going to try to emulate, are we? 00:08:07.360 --> 00:08:12.379 The sins of Jehoram were clear from the very start. 00:08:12.379 --> 00:08:29.759 As he ascended to the throne as one of the many sons of his father Jehoshaphat, he was given the special task of being the king over the whole nation of Israel. 00:08:29.860 --> 00:08:34.460 Now, remember, historically, there's the southern nation and the northern nation. 00:08:34.580 --> 00:08:38.179 And the southern nation is sometimes called Judah, and sometimes it's called Israel. 00:08:38.179 --> 00:08:44.839 The northern part is always called Israel, and we have to figure out when Israel means the northern kingdom and when it means everybody. 00:08:45.099 --> 00:08:49.219 But, so he was the king over in Jerusalem ruling over it. 00:08:49.319 --> 00:08:57.059 And he looked at his brothers, the ones that God had blessed through his father with riches and wealth and fortified cities. 00:08:57.500 --> 00:09:01.679 There was seemingly a sense of God's presence with them or blessing on them. 00:09:01.679 --> 00:09:04.000 And he saw them only as rivals. 00:09:04.859 --> 00:09:12.479 And following in the footsteps of the world around him, in insecurity and fear, he murdered them. 00:09:13.139 --> 00:09:15.439 He wiped them all out. 00:09:17.339 --> 00:09:20.679 And though this tactic never seems to work throughout history, 00:09:21.139 --> 00:09:27.059 killing off all your rivals seems to be a common theme of those who are insecure 00:09:27.059 --> 00:09:30.659 and those who are fearful when they take the throne. 00:09:31.939 --> 00:09:36.419 And not only did he do that, but what we read in verse 11, 00:09:36.419 --> 00:09:39.939 he also forsook the true worship of God. 00:09:40.179 --> 00:09:42.459 He rebuilt the high places. 00:09:43.019 --> 00:09:47.539 Now, in Canaanite religion, the high places were places where people would go up, 00:09:48.000 --> 00:09:53.039 literally up mountains, hills, whatever, to find places of worship, 00:09:53.179 --> 00:09:56.559 to worship the Canaanite gods who lived in the area. 00:09:57.059 --> 00:10:01.859 Israel was surrounded by people that worshipped pantheons of gods. 00:10:02.859 --> 00:10:05.399 But God had called Israel to be unique. 00:10:05.539 --> 00:10:09.419 Remember the first commandment that God gave to Moses. 00:10:10.179 --> 00:10:13.059 You shall have no other gods before me. 00:10:13.679 --> 00:10:20.359 And yet here is the king of God's people building places to worship other gods. 00:10:21.759 --> 00:10:23.419 Why would he do this? 00:10:23.419 --> 00:10:26.740 Well, the story goes on and it says, 00:10:27.059 --> 00:10:30.459 because he walked in the ways of the house of Ahab. 00:10:30.819 --> 00:10:33.539 Now, if you've been here, you're starting to pick up on this. 00:10:33.620 --> 00:10:36.559 The northern kingdom during this time was ruled by a guy named Ahab, 00:10:36.679 --> 00:10:38.399 who was the worst of the worst. 00:10:38.399 --> 00:10:42.559 In all ways. 00:10:43.759 --> 00:10:50.579 And Jehoram's father, in an attempt to make peace with this unrighteous ruler, 00:10:51.159 --> 00:10:55.240 said, let's make an alliance and let me marry my son to your daughter. 00:10:55.419 --> 00:10:59.500 So Jehoram's wife was the daughter of Ahab. 00:10:59.500 --> 00:11:06.740 So they were covenanted together in marriage in a unique way. 00:11:08.259 --> 00:11:09.539 And do you know what Jehoram did? 00:11:10.419 --> 00:11:13.559 He followed his wife in worshiping her gods. 00:11:14.019 --> 00:11:17.840 For her mother was Jezebel, who worshipped Baal. 00:11:18.700 --> 00:11:22.240 And so through this, all of the Canaanite worship, 00:11:22.440 --> 00:11:26.240 all of the worship of other gods in the area were brought in. 00:11:26.240 --> 00:11:31.279 Now, the rite of Chronicles contrasts the house of David, 00:11:32.000 --> 00:11:35.100 that which is, though imperfectly, faithful in worship, 00:11:35.259 --> 00:11:37.620 trusting in politics, obedient to God's law, 00:11:37.779 --> 00:11:42.620 with the house of Ahab, idolatrous, unfaithful, self-reliant, disobedient. 00:11:45.419 --> 00:11:49.120 Verse 11 says, he led them into a whoredom. 00:11:49.799 --> 00:11:51.740 Why does he use this word? 00:11:51.740 --> 00:11:58.139 Well, because the whole covenant relationship between God and his people 00:11:58.139 --> 00:12:03.740 was viewed through one lens as like a marriage. 00:12:04.000 --> 00:12:08.500 It was a covenant between two people committed wholly to one another. 00:12:09.799 --> 00:12:15.220 And yet Jehoram broke that covenant by going to worship these other gods. 00:12:15.320 --> 00:12:17.539 And you know, you should know, if you don't know this, 00:12:17.720 --> 00:12:20.200 the Old Testament picks up this theme over and over again, 00:12:20.200 --> 00:12:26.520 how adultery is…language is used for the unfaithful worship 00:12:26.520 --> 00:12:32.120 or turning to worship other gods, the idolatry of the people of God. 00:12:32.960 --> 00:12:38.580 And so Jehoram violated the marriage of God and his people, 00:12:38.940 --> 00:12:40.620 and the betrayal was profound. 00:12:41.620 --> 00:12:46.120 He was like a man who would bring home prostitutes into his own home 00:12:46.120 --> 00:12:48.519 and parade them in front of his wife and family. 00:12:51.240 --> 00:12:54.279 In this era of Judah, the sin was great. 00:12:55.440 --> 00:12:59.259 And any righteous person would ask, how do we live in such times? 00:13:00.320 --> 00:13:02.919 Now, before we go on and continue to answer that question, 00:13:03.139 --> 00:13:07.060 we need to think about the question, how do we learn from this account? 00:13:07.059 --> 00:13:12.019 Because our instinct often in the first hand is to look at this and to say, 00:13:12.579 --> 00:13:14.239 Jehoram was terrible. 00:13:14.599 --> 00:13:15.959 He was the worst. 00:13:16.239 --> 00:13:19.659 I can't believe that anyone would do something like that. 00:13:20.599 --> 00:13:23.500 But friends, this is not how we are to read our Bible. 00:13:23.500 --> 00:13:29.220 Because we are reminded again and again by the Bible that, 00:13:29.659 --> 00:13:31.200 but for the grace of God, 00:13:31.559 --> 00:13:39.159 our hearts have the same seed of sin in it that was in Jehoram. 00:13:40.539 --> 00:13:44.799 And we would follow in his footsteps apart from God's twist the way that we live 00:17:15.980 --> 00:17:17.379 and how we relate to others, 00:17:17.519 --> 00:17:18.679 and most importantly, 00:17:18.819 --> 00:17:20.399 how we relate to God. 00:17:20.539 --> 00:17:23.500 Because we have made them the functional God 00:17:23.500 --> 00:17:25.939 to whom we look for salvation, 00:17:26.699 --> 00:17:29.299 for justifying our lives, 00:17:29.399 --> 00:17:30.699 for meaning and purpose, 00:17:31.059 --> 00:17:32.259 for ultimate security. 00:17:32.259 --> 00:17:34.659 The things that we ought to get from God alone, 00:17:34.779 --> 00:17:36.839 we get from these things. 00:17:38.339 --> 00:17:41.659 So, friends, 00:17:41.740 --> 00:17:42.819 we need to recognize 00:17:42.819 --> 00:17:45.000 that Jehoram is not so different talks about not only that sin is dark, 00:18:04.740 --> 00:18:06.440 but that it has consequences. 00:18:07.440 --> 00:18:09.380 So, as we keep moving on, 00:18:09.420 --> 00:18:10.340 the
