to sharpen, to focus, to revive. 00:03:34.120 --> 00:03:43.960 This morning, if you have ears to hear what Jesus is saying, you're going to be jolted by what you just heard. 00:03:43.960 --> 00:03:52.200 The parable in which he is spoken is about how this age in which we live now, 00:03:52.439 --> 00:03:59.120 it's going to culminate into one great final judgment and Jesus calls it a harvest. 00:04:00.219 --> 00:04:04.379 Later on in Matthew 13, he's going to compare it to a great catch of fish. 00:04:04.379 --> 00:04:10.159 So this morning, if you've come here as a non-Christian, you don't believe in Jesus, 00:04:11.299 --> 00:04:18.600 this should provide some kind of sobriety to you, a bit of a warning, something to take to heart. 00:04:19.439 --> 00:04:25.600 Because if Jesus is true, if this is real, and that there is a judgment to come, 00:04:25.600 --> 00:04:29.360 and if you're not a Christian, you need to take that to heart. 00:04:32.240 --> 00:04:36.780 If you parables. 00:05:08.860 --> 00:05:17.379 And they're very much designed to alert us and focus us on being a part of the mission of the kingdom. 00:05:17.379 --> 00:05:27.000 This parable of the weeds is an elaborate parable that Jesus first spoke to crowds on a beach, 00:05:27.399 --> 00:05:31.980 and then He gives the explanation in a house to His disciples. 00:05:32.279 --> 00:05:33.879 And so this morning what we're going to do is this. 00:05:34.420 --> 00:05:37.240 We're just going to walk through the parable that He spoke on the beach. 00:05:37.659 --> 00:05:38.939 He wants to see it a couple things. 00:05:39.300 --> 00:05:41.420 And then we're going to move to the explanation. 00:05:41.420 --> 00:05:47.199 And it's in the explanation we're going to spend most of our time so we hear what Jesus is saying. 00:05:47.939 --> 00:05:50.680 And then we're going to bring it to bear in our own lives. 00:05:51.160 --> 00:05:56.980 We're going to be asking the question, okay, am I a wheat or am I a weed and so what? 00:05:57.700 --> 00:06:01.740 What difference does this make for us now in 2017? 00:06:01.740 --> 00:06:14.920 This parable alerts us that the risen King Jesus is present and actively at work saving people today 00:06:14.920 --> 00:06:19.060 and will one day usher in a judgment. 00:06:20.280 --> 00:06:24.639 So if you would turn back to Matthew 13, 24 through 30, 00:06:25.720 --> 00:06:27.460 let's take a look at this parable. 00:06:27.620 --> 00:06:30.939 The parable speaks to the crowds on the beach. 00:06:30.939 --> 00:06:33.100 I'm just going to spend a little bit of time here. 00:06:33.199 --> 00:06:35.959 Now, as you're looking there, remember what a parable is. 00:06:36.019 --> 00:06:40.259 A parable is a teaching tool and it uses comparisons. 00:06:40.959 --> 00:06:45.000 And so what Jesus is doing, He's going to take something from everyday experience 00:06:45.000 --> 00:06:51.199 and He's going to compare it and use it as a teaching tool of a spiritual reality. 00:06:52.579 --> 00:06:54.139 And that's what He's doing here. 00:06:54.139 --> 00:07:01.419 Jesus employs parables to hide the kingdom from those with a hard heart 00:07:01.419 --> 00:07:05.379 and to reveal the kingdom to those with a humble heart, 00:07:05.879 --> 00:07:09.019 a heart in which God has turned the soil over Him. 00:07:10.719 --> 00:07:12.819 The other thing I want you to notice is this. 00:07:13.079 --> 00:07:16.899 The kingdom of heaven is the subject of this parable. 00:07:16.899 --> 00:07:22.159 And so all throughout Matthew 13, all the parables are about the kingdom of heaven. 00:07:22.919 --> 00:07:24.799 You see that repeated time and time again. 00:07:24.919 --> 00:07:25.879 So here's what this means. 00:07:26.599 --> 00:07:33.819 This teaching tool, this parable, is specifically aimed to teach about the kingdom. 00:07:34.599 --> 00:07:40.599 So it's going to make comparisons in order to help us understand truths about the kingdom of heaven, 00:07:40.759 --> 00:07:43.939 which begs the question, what's the kingdom of heaven? 00:07:43.939 --> 00:07:48.279 What is Jesus talking about if He's repeating it so much? 00:07:48.379 --> 00:07:50.439 And the simple way to think about it is this. 00:07:50.860 --> 00:07:56.800 The kingdom is the active, saving reign of God on earth. 00:07:57.399 --> 00:07:58.680 That's the kingdom of heaven. 00:07:59.579 --> 00:08:07.259 It's God's rescue mission to the nations of gathering to Himself a new people and a new kingdom. 00:08:09.420 --> 00:08:13.680 And so if you look at this parable, Jesus basically says this. 00:08:13.680 --> 00:08:15.259 There's this master of the house. 00:08:15.600 --> 00:08:18.959 He goes and sows this good seed in his field. 00:08:19.459 --> 00:08:24.139 And then while his guys are sleeping, this enemy comes and amidst the good seed, 00:08:24.439 --> 00:08:26.600 he sows bad seed of weeds. 00:08:26.840 --> 00:08:29.160 And over time, the weeds grow up. 00:08:29.480 --> 00:08:33.299 And then his servants who are kind of working the field, they notice. 00:08:34.120 --> 00:08:39.779 They notice as these plants grow that there's a difference between the two. 00:08:39.779 --> 00:08:46.360 For what you need to understand is that the wheat Jesus is talking about and the weeds Jesus is talking about, 00:08:47.039 --> 00:08:51.259 back in the day, they would have been very difficult to differentiate. 00:08:51.899 --> 00:08:58.539 And it's only when they come to seed, when the wheat produces grain, is that distinction made. 00:08:58.539 --> 00:09:02.199 And so these servants see the difference. 00:09:02.339 --> 00:09:03.500 They go to the master. 00:09:03.639 --> 00:09:05.799 They say, hey, did you use some lousy seed? 00:09:05.899 --> 00:09:06.740 What's going on here? 00:09:10.439 --> 00:09:13.879 The master of the house says, no, we've got an enemy. 00:09:14.959 --> 00:09:18.639 The servants come back and say, should we go root up all the weeds? 00:09:18.639 --> 00:09:24.220 To which the master of the house says, no, don't do that. 00:09:24.779 --> 00:09:30.519 Because in the kind of pulling up the weeds, you can also pull up the wheat and we don't want to do that. 00:09:30.799 --> 00:09:34.199 So let's let it all grow into the harvest. 00:09:35.480 --> 00:09:40.000 And it's at the harvest, I will send out my reapers is what he says. 00:09:40.000 --> 00:09:47.000 And those reapers will be instructed to gather the wheat, bind it up and put it into the burn pile, 00:09:47.279 --> 00:09:50.279 and then gather the wheat and bring it into the barn. 00:09:52.740 --> 00:10:03.100 When you hear this parable, you need to realize that Jesus is comparing something very elaborate here to the kingdom of God. 00:10:03.100 --> 00:10:11.779 And what I want to help you see at the get-go is the parable is a parable that's describing a process. 00:10:12.820 --> 00:10:20.720 The comparison is being made between the saving reign of God and something being brought to harvest. 00:10:21.480 --> 00:10:24.040 There is a passage of time involved. 00:10:24.039 --> 00:10:34.719 And so there is both this sowing, this growing, this reaping, this separating, culminating into a future event. 00:10:35.319 --> 00:10:44.000 So what I want you to see from the get-go here is we've got a present process that culminates into a future event. 00:10:44.000 --> 00:10:56.179 And very basically what Jesus is doing is he's describing the active, saving reign of God as an ongoing work that will culminate in the end of the age. 00:11:02.360 --> 00:11:06.960 Let's look at his explanation in verses 36 through 43. 00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:16.600 Again, I don't want to assume this, but notice in verse 36 that Jesus leaves the crowds on the beach and he goes into a house. 00:11:16.700 --> 00:11:21.019 It's probably the same house that he came out of in 13.1. 00:11:21.740 --> 00:11:24.320 And his disciples follow him into the house. 00:11:24.720 --> 00:11:30.240 And his disciples then ask him or say to him, explain to us the parable of the weeds of the field. 00:11:30.240 --> 00:11:39.100 Now, you may be asking yourself, well, I thought that if the word of the kingdom is planted in somebody, it should take root. 00:11:39.180 --> 00:11:40.159 Why are these guys asking? 00:11:40.259 --> 00:11:41.580 Are they dumb or something like that? 00:11:42.639 --> 00:11:49.899 For me, this is very encouraging because the parable is drawing the disciples to Jesus. 00:11:51.060 --> 00:11:54.480 They're looking to him to explain it to them. 00:11:55.100 --> 00:11:57.879 And so it hasn't pushed them away. 00:11:58.000 --> 00:11:59.759 It's drawn them to him. 00:12:00.240 --> 00:12:01.759 It's does this rapid fire, point by point explanation of the different elements of the parable. 00:12:17.940 --> 00:12:19.180 And he says, this is what it means. 00:12:19.500 --> 00:12:20.299 This is what this means. 00:12:20.379 --> 00:12:21.159 This is what that means. 00:12:21.220 --> 00:12:22.299 And this is what this means. 00:12:23.200 --> 00:12:25.980 And believe it or not, there are nine of them. 00:12:27.519 --> 00:12:28.080 Let's go. 00:12:28.799 --> 00:12:29.820 I want you to see them. 00:12:30.240 --> 00:12:32.700 The first is this. 00:12:32.700 --> 00:12:38.040 The one who sows the good seed is the son of man. 00:12:38.039 --> 00:12:45.819 This parable talked about this master of a house who went out and sowed good seed. 00:12:46.439 --> 00:12:50.860 And Jesus is saying, the guy I'm talking about is the son of man. 00:12:50.860 --> 00:13:05.440 Now, what you need to realize is that phrase, son of man, it's like a locomotive loaded with messianic freight that is making, building momentum through the gospel of Matthew. 00:13:05.879 --> 00:13:10.279 And it's going to culminate with the son of man dying on a cross and being raised from the dead. 00:13:10.279 --> 00:13:14.179 That phrase is very important. 00:13:14.179 --> 00:13:18.379 Can I have you turn back into the book of Daniel? 00:13:18.860 --> 00:13:20.659 Here's how I find the book of Daniel. 00:13:20.899 --> 00:13:24.519 I just look for the book of Ezekiel, which is a really big prophet. 00:13:24.919 --> 00:13:26.319 And then just go right. 00:13:26.620 --> 00:13:27.399 You'll find Daniel. 00:13:27.740 --> 00:13:28.779 So look for Ezekiel. 00:13:29.059 --> 00:13:29.740 Go right. 00:13:29.899 --> 00:13:30.740 You find Daniel. 00:13:30.740 --> 00:13:39.259 And if you look at Daniel chapter 7, verses 13 and 14, this is what Jesus is referring to when he calls himself the son of man. 00:13:39.680 --> 00:13:40.560 Listen to this. 00:13:40.960 --> 00:13:42.759 This is a vision that Daniel had. 00:13:43.320 --> 00:13:44.220 And he says this. 00:13:44.299 --> 00:13:45.680 I saw in the night visions. 00:13:46.320 --> 00:13:50.720 And behold, with the clouds of heaven, there came one like a son of man. 00:13:51.600 --> 00:13:53.879 That's the phrase Jesus is pulling on. 00:13:54.680 --> 00:13:58.779 Now, notice what this son of man, what happens. 00:13:58.779 --> 00:14:05.620 He came to the ancient of days and was presented before him. 00:14:06.199 --> 00:14:12.339 And to him, the son of man was given dominion and glory and a kingdom. 00:14:12.899 --> 00:14:14.039 Does that ring a bell? 00:14:16.740 --> 00:14:20.679 That all peoples, nations and languages should serve him. 00:14:20.759 --> 00:14:25.679 This kingdom is a kingdom that is comprised of all people over the earth. 00:14:25.679 --> 00:14:32.120 His dominion is an everlasting dominion which shall not pass away. 00:14:32.659 --> 00:14:36.019 Whatever kind of kingdom this is, it's an everlasting one. 00:14:37.339 --> 00:14:41.639 And his kingdom, one that shall not be destroyed. 00:14:42.219 --> 00:14:45.219 It is unstoppable. 00:14:46.459 --> 00:14:48.939 It is unbreakable. 00:14:49.819 --> 00:14:52.699 The kingdom is indestructible. 00:14:52.700 --> 00:14:59.080 And so, the one who sows is the son of man. 00:14:59.220 --> 00:15:02.500 When you hear that, Jesus is making a huge claim. 00:15:03.520 --> 00:15:05.200 Because he's talking about himself. 00:15:08.860 --> 00:15:10.480 So, this son of man. 00:15:10.540 --> 00:15:14.000 Look at verse 37 of Matthew 13. 00:15:15.640 --> 00:15:18.740 The one who sows the good seed is the son of man. 00:15:18.740 --> 00:15:26.360 And what's interesting about that phrase, the one who sows the good seed, it's actually in the present tense in the original language. 00:15:26.480 --> 00:15:28.259 It's the one who is sowing the good seed. 00:15:28.940 --> 00:15:31.159 Jesus is saying, what I'm doing now. 00:15:32.100 --> 00:15:33.480 I'm sowing the good seed. 00:15:33.659 --> 00:15:37.580 I'm raising up for myself sons and daughters of the kingdom. 00:15:37.580 --> 00:15:42.240 And then, if you look down at verse 41, you read this. 00:15:42.420 --> 00:15:43.360 Well, start in verse 40. 00:15:43.780 --> 00:15:47.520 Just as the weeds are gathered and burned with fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 00:15:47.960 --> 00:15:53.840 The son of man will send his angels and they will gather out of his kingdom all causes of sin and all lawbreakers. 00:15:54.500 --> 00:15:58.180 And so, there's this present earthly ministry of Jesus in which he's sowing. 00:15:58.940 --> 00:16:01.820 In which he is raising up sons and daughters of the kingdom. 00:16:01.820 --> 00:16:11.440 And then, there's this future ministry of the son of man in which he separates the wheat from the weeds. 00:16:13.180 --> 00:16:16.120 He is the present sower and the future reaper. 00:16:16.720 --> 00:16:20.940 This son of man is the Lord of the harvest. 00:16:21.940 --> 00:16:22.879 That's the claim. 00:16:24.200 --> 00:16:26.460 That's what Jesus is saying about himself. 00:16:26.460 --> 00:16:34.080 So, this one who sows the good seed, this is the son of man. 00:16:35.379 --> 00:16:37.440 Now, look at the next one in verse 38. 00:16:37.800 --> 00:16:39.580 He describes the field. 00:16:40.240 --> 00:16:42.620 The field is the world. 00:16:44.639 --> 00:16:49.820 Now, it's important to note where Jesus locates the kingdom of heaven. 00:16:50.460 --> 00:16:52.580 He's locating it in the world. 00:16:53.280 --> 00:16:54.920 The earth in which we live on. 00:16:54.919 --> 00:17:04.639 The earth is the field in which the son of man is actively working which will culminate in a great harvest. 00:17:05.220 --> 00:17:10.680 And the work that he's doing is he's calling rebels out of darkness to be sons and daughters of the kingdom. 00:17:11.579 --> 00:17:14.819 Why I say that is for this reason. 00:17:15.220 --> 00:17:16.740 He's not talking about the church. 00:17:18.220 --> 00:17:23.920 Jesus isn't talking here about there is two groups of people in the church. 00:17:23.920 --> 00:17:28.380 What he's saying is there's two groups of people on the earth. 00:17:29.620 --> 00:17:32.620 And his work is a work among them. 00:17:32.619 --> 00:17:42.039 Now, if the world is the field, then what is being grown? 00:17:44.139 --> 00:17:46.819 What's being grown are people. 00:17:47.939 --> 00:17:52.019 From every tribe, every nation, every tongue. 00:17:52.319 --> 00:17:53.939 Goes back to Daniel chapter 7. 00:17:55.519 --> 00:17:56.500 All nations. 00:17:56.500 --> 00:18:02.460 So this field is the world. 00:18:03.240 --> 00:18:06.900 This is a mission with a global scope. 00:18:10.740 --> 00:18:11.759 That's why he came. 00:18:12.900 --> 00:18:15.059 I'm not sure if you notice this in verse 24. 00:18:15.240 --> 00:18:16.200 It's very subtle. 00:18:16.200 --> 00:18:20.500 But in verse 74 in the parable, he says, 00:18:20.660 --> 00:18:25.580 The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field. 00:18:27.960 --> 00:18:29.920 This world is his world. 00:18:31.519 --> 00:18:36.319 It's been attempted to be claimed by the devil, but it's been counterclaimed by Jesus. 00:18:36.740 --> 00:18:38.340 And one day he's going to recreate it. 00:18:38.339 --> 00:18:43.359 So we've looked at who the sower is. 00:18:43.459 --> 00:18:44.899 We've looked at what the field is. 00:18:45.199 --> 00:18:48.439 Now let's look at what this good seed is in verse 38. 00:18:48.819 --> 00:18:50.939 The good seed is the sons of the kingdom. 00:18:51.459 --> 00:18:54.459 Now in the parable of the soils, which we saw a couple weeks ago, 00:18:54.959 --> 00:18:58.159 the good seed, the seed was actually the word of the kingdom, 00:18:58.579 --> 00:19:00.119 the message of the gospel. 00:19:00.539 --> 00:19:04.019 But here, Jesus is saying the good seed represents people, 00:19:04.179 --> 00:19:05.079 the sons of the kingdom. 00:19:05.079 --> 00:19:07.399 Now you may say, why that? 00:19:07.480 --> 00:19:08.919 Well, that's just how parables work. 00:19:10.000 --> 00:19:12.720 Jesus can have things represent other things. 00:19:14.960 --> 00:19:18.500 But the question is, who are these sons of the kingdom, 00:19:18.980 --> 00:19:20.099 these sons and daughters? 00:19:20.980 --> 00:19:22.819 Well, these are the men and women, boys and girls, 00:19:22.939 --> 00:19:27.339 who've responded in humble faith to the word of the kingdom. 00:19:27.980 --> 00:19:30.579 These are followers of Jesus. 00:19:30.579 --> 00:19:35.799 These are the ones who are living out the Sermon on the Mount. 00:19:35.980 --> 00:19:40.220 These are the ones that are looking to be the blessed ones, 00:19:40.759 --> 00:19:43.339 who are seeking to obey Jesus in all that he commanded. 00:19:43.699 --> 00:19:46.919 These are the ones that have been radically changed by the Spirit of God, 00:19:46.960 --> 00:19:50.419 and now they go from wanting to live for themselves to live for Jesus. 00:19:51.919 --> 00:19:54.960 That's the good seed, the sons and daughters of the kingdom. 00:19:56.179 --> 00:19:57.659 And then he goes into verse 38. 00:19:57.660 --> 00:20:02.180 He says, the weeds are the sons of the evil one. 00:20:03.560 --> 00:20:06.500 Just as the good seed represents a particular group of people, 00:20:07.200 --> 00:20:07.980 followers of Jesus, 00:20:08.660 --> 00:20:11.000 so the weeds depict another group of people, 00:20:11.740 --> 00:20:13.200 those who aren't following Jesus. 00:20:15.140 --> 00:20:18.080 Jesus says the weeds are the sons of the evil one. 00:20:18.340 --> 00:20:19.480 It's a reference to the devil. 00:20:20.360 --> 00:20:21.740 Now you may be sitting there saying, 00:20:21.840 --> 00:20:23.840 well, man, I hope he wouldn't say that to my friends 00:20:23.840 --> 00:20:24.920 who aren't
