Amen. 00:04:02.040 --> 00:04:05.140 As we take up this passage this morning, 00:04:05.240 --> 00:04:10.460 I want you to understand that we are looking at the only one of the miracles of Jesus 00:04:10.460 --> 00:04:13.060 that is recorded in all four Gospels. 00:04:13.719 --> 00:04:14.640 That's pretty interesting. 00:04:15.719 --> 00:04:19.399 Because if you have done any studies in the Gospels, 00:04:19.399 --> 00:04:29.799 you understand that three of the four carry the commonality of dealing with a broad look at the life, 00:04:30.039 --> 00:04:32.099 and particularly the public ministry of Christ. 00:04:32.620 --> 00:04:41.879 John is different in that John's Gospel is focused almost exclusively on arguing the point 00:04:41.879 --> 00:04:46.120 or making the point clear to us that Jesus is the Son of God, 00:04:46.120 --> 00:04:48.899 that believing in Him we might have everlasting life. 00:04:48.899 --> 00:04:55.000 It's not that the other Gospels don't have an interest in us seeing Christ as our Savior, 00:04:55.319 --> 00:05:01.980 but John is focused in a very narrow sense of bringing us face to face with the person of Christ 00:05:01.980 --> 00:05:04.959 as our Lord and Savior. 00:05:04.959 --> 00:05:09.159 And so as we take up this passage this morning, 00:05:09.379 --> 00:05:12.599 there is something that should immediately stand out in our thinking, 00:05:12.819 --> 00:05:14.079 and you immediately say, 00:05:14.180 --> 00:05:16.519 all right, this has bearing on me. 00:05:16.759 --> 00:05:22.359 This passage is important for me in terms of my appreciating the Lord Jesus Christ 00:05:22.359 --> 00:05:25.079 and my being affected by that truth. 00:05:26.419 --> 00:05:32.459 Let me share something with you that I read earlier this week that was convicting to me. 00:05:32.459 --> 00:05:38.500 J.C. Ryle, a pastor of a previous generation, wrote this. 00:05:38.560 --> 00:05:38.839 He said, 00:05:39.139 --> 00:05:43.060 I'm afraid that many Christians in our day have lost sight of Christ. 00:05:44.859 --> 00:05:49.179 Oh, they talk about His salvation, but not about the Savior. 00:05:50.459 --> 00:05:53.979 They talk about redemption as a theological truth, 00:05:54.199 --> 00:05:55.699 but they don't talk about the Redeemer. 00:05:55.699 --> 00:05:59.879 They talk about Christ's work and His power, 00:06:00.300 --> 00:06:03.099 but they really don't focus on Christ Himself. 00:06:05.219 --> 00:06:06.740 This is a great fault, 00:06:07.459 --> 00:06:11.659 and one that accounts for much of the dry and shriveled spirit 00:06:11.659 --> 00:06:16.819 that infuses the religious lives of so many people who profess faith. 00:06:16.819 --> 00:06:24.060 If ever you would grow in grace and have joy and peace and abundance, 00:06:25.060 --> 00:06:30.540 beware that you do not fall into this error of focusing on the details rather than the person. 00:06:32.459 --> 00:06:38.000 Cease to regard the gospel merely as a collection of dry doctrine or historical facts. loving heart of our actual Savior. 00:07:17.900 --> 00:07:19.520 And I read that to you this morning. 00:07:20.480 --> 00:07:26.160 The leading subject and focus of the sermon this morning, I trust, 00:07:26.340 --> 00:07:29.060 is not the details of the feeding of the 5,000, 00:07:29.060 --> 00:07:30.480 actually probably 20,000, 00:07:30.639 --> 00:07:33.259 not the bread, not the loaves, and all those little things, 00:07:33.519 --> 00:07:36.579 but it is the loving heart of our Lord Jesus 00:07:36.579 --> 00:07:39.280 who is your Savior this morning 00:07:39.280 --> 00:07:44.259 and the person that is most prized and most significant in your life. 00:07:45.360 --> 00:07:48.379 So as we dive into this passage this morning, 00:07:49.680 --> 00:07:53.340 I want you to have an understanding that it is recorded here 00:07:53.339 --> 00:07:59.179 so that we, as believers, can be affected the same way the disciples were. 00:07:59.239 --> 00:08:04.219 And I encourage you to know that it may be that the impact, 00:08:04.359 --> 00:08:08.039 that the lesson that we have may take place over time. 00:08:08.120 --> 00:08:12.120 I say that because if you will remember from your study in the Synoptic Gospels, 00:08:12.559 --> 00:08:15.959 after Jesus fed the 5,000, later they're on a little trip, 00:08:16.239 --> 00:08:17.059 and Jesus said, 00:08:17.060 --> 00:08:18.879 Beware of the leaven of the Pharisees. 00:08:18.959 --> 00:08:20.300 And what did they immediately think? 00:08:21.120 --> 00:08:24.319 Oh, we didn't pack lunch, and Jesus is upset with us. 00:08:24.620 --> 00:08:25.160 And it says, 00:08:25.420 --> 00:08:28.579 And they didn't figure out that if He could handle feeding the 5,000, 00:08:28.939 --> 00:08:30.660 lunch was no problem for Him. 00:08:31.319 --> 00:08:33.419 And so this morning as we look at our passage, 00:08:33.539 --> 00:08:37.600 I want you to understand that John's focus is helping us see 00:08:37.600 --> 00:08:39.740 the significance of our Savior 00:08:39.740 --> 00:08:43.179 and the blessing we have in our relationship with Him. 00:08:43.179 --> 00:08:45.739 So let's kind of step into the text. 00:08:45.819 --> 00:08:46.939 Let me read a portion of it, 00:08:47.079 --> 00:08:49.959 and then we'll begin learning to see things like Jesus. 00:08:51.259 --> 00:08:54.359 After this, Jesus went to the other side of the Sea of Galilee, 00:08:54.519 --> 00:08:56.339 which is the Sea of Tiberias. 00:08:57.859 --> 00:09:00.019 And a large crowd was following Him 00:09:00.019 --> 00:09:03.120 because they saw the signs that He was doing on the sick. 00:09:04.120 --> 00:09:05.599 Jesus went up onto the mountain, 00:09:05.599 --> 00:09:08.299 and there He sat down with His disciples. 00:09:09.399 --> 00:09:11.819 Now the Passover, the feast of the Jews, was at hand. 00:09:11.820 --> 00:09:15.000 And lifting up His eyes then, 00:09:15.060 --> 00:09:17.140 and seeing the large crowd was coming toward Him, 00:09:17.460 --> 00:09:18.460 Jesus said to Philip, 00:09:18.820 --> 00:09:22.520 Where are we to buy bread so that these people may eat? 00:09:23.900 --> 00:09:26.780 He said this to test Him, 00:09:27.540 --> 00:09:29.360 for He Himself knew what He would do. 00:09:30.020 --> 00:09:32.200 Well, as we step into the passage and begin, 00:09:32.520 --> 00:09:35.160 I want you to recognize that that little phrase 00:09:35.160 --> 00:09:37.640 or little statement that's made after this 00:09:37.640 --> 00:09:40.200 really has a lot of detail underneath it 00:09:40.200 --> 00:09:42.240 that is appropriate for us to take some time 00:09:42.240 --> 00:09:44.200 and get a handle on. 00:09:45.700 --> 00:09:48.820 We learn from Matthew, Mark, and Luke 00:09:48.820 --> 00:09:50.980 that Jesus actually, 00:09:51.180 --> 00:09:55.160 following what we found recorded in John chapter 5 00:09:55.160 --> 00:09:57.000 and His interaction with the Pharisees, 00:09:57.320 --> 00:10:00.640 had continued to run into growing adversity 00:10:00.640 --> 00:10:03.160 and objection from the religious leaders. 00:10:03.379 --> 00:10:04.040 And as a result, 00:10:04.400 --> 00:10:07.500 instead of working in the direct proximity of Jerusalem, 00:10:07.500 --> 00:10:09.860 His ministry had kind of stepped away 00:10:09.860 --> 00:10:12.639 to some of the outlying cities, villages. 00:10:14.159 --> 00:10:15.139 And during this time, 00:10:15.299 --> 00:10:17.399 as He was ministering in these areas, 00:10:18.960 --> 00:10:22.700 He was engaged not only in the interaction 00:10:22.700 --> 00:10:23.940 that He had with people, 00:10:24.080 --> 00:10:26.179 but He also, during this time, 00:10:26.320 --> 00:10:28.480 sent out His disciples two by two, 00:10:28.639 --> 00:10:31.299 and they went out into all the outlying communities, 00:10:31.620 --> 00:10:32.860 and they preached the kingdom. 00:10:32.860 --> 00:10:34.960 They preached the coming of the Messiah. 00:10:35.440 --> 00:10:39.240 Repent, for Messiah is at hand. 00:10:39.360 --> 00:10:41.980 Repent, because the issues of your heart 00:10:41.980 --> 00:10:42.980 are going to be dealt with. 00:10:43.300 --> 00:10:45.080 And as a result of this ministry, 00:10:45.220 --> 00:10:48.240 you'll remember that the pressure 00:10:48.240 --> 00:10:50.740 that was growing on Jesus 00:10:50.740 --> 00:10:52.759 also grew on the disciples. 00:10:54.500 --> 00:10:57.300 And so they became tired and fatigued 00:10:57.300 --> 00:10:58.659 in the process of ministry, 00:10:58.659 --> 00:11:00.339 and understandably, 00:11:00.719 --> 00:11:02.899 we know that as a result of the pressure 00:11:02.899 --> 00:11:03.679 that they were under, 00:11:04.059 --> 00:11:06.879 they began to need some rest and some break. 00:11:06.939 --> 00:11:08.699 They needed a break from what was going on. 00:11:09.039 --> 00:11:10.100 As a result of this, 00:11:10.199 --> 00:11:11.299 Jesus proposed, 00:11:11.500 --> 00:11:12.319 let's step away 00:11:12.319 --> 00:11:14.579 and let's get a little bit of time to ourselves 00:11:14.579 --> 00:11:16.839 so we can kind of take a breather 00:11:16.839 --> 00:11:19.719 and get reoriented in ministry. 00:11:19.939 --> 00:11:21.279 It's an appropriate thing to do. 00:11:22.339 --> 00:11:25.659 All of us need rest 00:11:25.659 --> 00:11:27.399 and a break on occasion. 00:11:27.399 --> 00:11:29.759 And here is Jesus planning this, 00:11:29.860 --> 00:11:30.299 and He says, 00:11:30.439 --> 00:11:32.019 all right, let's step into a boat. 00:11:32.340 --> 00:11:35.179 And they took off on their journey in this boat. 00:11:35.459 --> 00:11:38.559 It was only about 10 miles across the lake, 00:11:38.659 --> 00:11:40.039 Sea of Galilee, 00:11:40.279 --> 00:11:42.199 and it wasn't that long of a distance. 00:11:42.699 --> 00:11:43.740 The people, however, 00:11:44.159 --> 00:11:46.059 did not want to lose sight 00:11:46.059 --> 00:11:48.100 or the presence of Christ. 00:11:48.240 --> 00:11:50.039 And so there was a throng of people 00:11:50.039 --> 00:11:52.419 that as they were making their slow journey 00:11:52.419 --> 00:11:53.139 in that boat, 00:11:53.399 --> 00:11:55.460 they were kind of running along the side 00:11:55.460 --> 00:11:56.899 and kind of tracking the boat. 00:11:56.899 --> 00:11:59.199 They kind of had an idea where it was going, 00:11:59.319 --> 00:12:02.019 and they were running along the side of the lake 00:12:02.019 --> 00:12:06.019 to stop wherever Jesus eventually ended up stopping. 00:12:07.360 --> 00:12:11.179 We read there that the crowd followed Him, 00:12:11.679 --> 00:12:14.840 not because they were interested in spiritual issues, 00:12:14.840 --> 00:12:16.139 but they'd seen the miracles. 00:12:16.639 --> 00:12:17.379 Look at verse 2. 00:12:17.379 --> 00:12:19.639 The large crowd was following Him 00:12:19.639 --> 00:12:21.340 because they saw the signs 00:12:21.340 --> 00:12:23.179 that He was doing on the sick. 00:12:23.340 --> 00:12:25.340 They were impressed with the power 00:12:25.340 --> 00:12:27.100 that Jesus was displaying. 00:12:27.879 --> 00:12:28.759 Now look in verse 3. 00:12:28.840 --> 00:12:29.059 It says, 00:12:29.179 --> 00:12:30.360 Jesus went up the mountain, 00:12:30.740 --> 00:12:32.639 and there He sat down with His disciples. 00:12:32.759 --> 00:12:34.740 Eventually, they landed at a place 00:12:34.740 --> 00:12:35.500 where Jesus said, 00:12:35.559 --> 00:12:36.439 all right, this will do it. 00:12:36.720 --> 00:12:37.840 And off they went, 00:12:37.879 --> 00:12:39.820 just kind of up away from the lake, 00:12:40.059 --> 00:12:41.279 a little distance from it, 00:12:41.279 --> 00:12:42.139 and they stopped, that the crowd brought, 00:12:56.339 --> 00:12:57.159 they were thinking, 00:12:57.379 --> 00:12:59.500 this is a time for us to get away, 00:12:59.679 --> 00:13:00.839 and we can be quiet.
