00:01:13.439 --> 00:01:16.319 revenge on him, and it has driven his whole life. 00:01:17.780 --> 00:01:21.539 There are many other people that you could think of that you would, you'd not have to 00:01:21.539 --> 00:01:25.239 even think for a minute to know what is the controlling passion of their lives. 00:01:25.239 --> 00:01:35.179 Marie Curie, or Lance Armstrong, Billy Graham, or Bono, and --> 00:01:57.780 think a little bit together about the controlling passions of our own mind, of our own heart, 00:01:57.879 --> 00:02:02.400 of our own lives, and how that shapes and informs our looking at specifically verses 5 through 8 today, but I'm going to be 00:02:17.539 --> 00:02:24.120 reading the first 12 verses, first 11 verses, I'm sorry, just to give it some context, because 00:02:24.120 --> 00:02:25.099 we're kind of in the middle. 00:02:25.580 --> 00:02:29.420 This passage is in the middle of a section, and so we're going to look at it together. 00:02:29.560 --> name. 00:05:31.000 --> 00:05:31.259 Amen. 00:05:39.439 --> 00:05:46.800 Romans 8 is one of the most beautiful passages in all of Scripture, but it comes after Romans 00:05:46.800 --> 00:05:47.579 1 through 7. 00:05:47.840 --> 00:05:53.000 And as we launch into this morning, I wanted to spend just two minutes trying to get us 00:05:53.000 --> 00:05:57.620 aligned to what the argument of what the Apostle Paul has been doing from the very beginning. 00:05:57.620 --> 00:06:04.680 The very beginning of the letter, he declares in verses 16 and 17, for the gospel is the 00:06:04.680 --> 00:06:10.560 power of God unto salvation for all who believe, first to the Jew and then to the Gentile. 00:06:12.480 --> 00:06:18.000 He's saying that there is a gospel, there's a good news about what God has done for all 00:06:18.000 --> 00:06:21.399 people that has power to save us. 00:06:21.720 --> 00:06:25.780 And then he launches into, for the rest of chapter 1, all the way through the middle of 00:06:25.779 --> 00:06:26.519 chapter 3. 00:06:26.519 --> 00:06:35.119 He launches into going deep into the problem that we have, that humanity is all under sin. 00:06:35.339 --> 00:06:42.159 Men and women from every tribe and nation, we do not worship God as we ought to. 00:06:42.299 --> 00:06:49.039 We do not honor Him or obey Him or serve Him as we ought to, as our Creator. 00:06:49.040 --> 00:06:56.260 And that because of that, all of us, religious people, non-religious people, all people in 00:06:56.260 --> 00:07:00.319 their natural state apart from God's help are lost. 00:07:01.080 --> 00:07:05.259 And not only are they lost, but they are under a right judgment. 00:07:06.000 --> 00:07:11.900 For as we turn away from the God who is all that is good in this world to something from God that is revealed. 00:07:37.319 --> 00:07:41.939 Now God has done something for you that you could not do for yourself. 00:07:44.519 --> 00:07:51.500 In Jesus Christ, He sent Him to be the perfect God-man, to live the life of perfect obedience 00:07:51.500 --> 00:07:55.459 and perfect honor and perfect worship of God that we could never do. 00:07:55.839 --> 00:08:00.300 And then having that perfect life, He then offers Himself up and says, 00:08:00.560 --> 00:08:04.699 I will take a death that I don't deserve for you who do deserve it. 00:08:04.699 --> 00:08:12.199 I will step into your place and die for the sin, die the penalty of death that you deserve 00:08:12.199 --> 00:08:17.219 because of your sin, because of your rebellion and alienation from God. 00:08:18.719 --> 00:08:23.120 And then He unpacks this and He talks about how glorious this is and how free this is, 00:08:23.439 --> 00:08:27.779 how it's something we could never do on our own, and so all we can do is receive it by faith. 00:08:27.779 --> 00:08:33.899 And then He gets to chapters 5 through 8, and He says, 00:08:34.360 --> 00:08:42.519 now that having been justified by God's grace, we now stand in this grace. 00:08:42.659 --> 00:08:48.059 We have peace with God and have a grace in which we now stand that gives us a new relationship 00:08:48.059 --> 00:08:53.939 with God and a new opportunity to live out a new kind of life where we're no longer slaves 00:08:53.940 --> 00:08:58.280 to this power of sin that has controlled us and infected us our whole lives. 00:08:58.520 --> 00:09:03.780 But now there is a new life that we can have, a life toward God and unto God. 00:09:04.120 --> 00:09:08.800 And in this we find all the things that our hearts most deeply desire. 00:09:11.520 --> 1 through 7 in a nutshell that leads us up to Romans 8, 00:09:31.160 --> 00:09:35.360 where He comes back and He is in some ways placing a capstone on that by saying, 00:09:35.900 --> 00:09:40.640 there is now therefore no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 00:09:40.639 --> 00:09:46.379 You are free from that penalty because of what God has done. 00:09:47.120 --> 00:09:48.419 And now there is a new life. 00:09:48.500 --> 00:09:54.399 If you were here last week, you remember Greg helped us see very helpfully that chapter 4, 00:09:55.059 --> 00:09:59.879 that God did all this in order that the righteous requirements of the law might be fulfilled. 00:10:00.120 --> 00:10:04.939 That is, that we are now able for the first time because of what God has done, 00:10:04.940 --> 00:10:12.820 to actually serve God, to actually please Him, to actually do the things that He told us to, 00:10:13.080 --> 00:10:17.420 which is actually how God defines the good life for us, right? 00:10:17.660 --> 00:10:22.580 Following the law, the righteous requirements of the law is not meant to be seen as a burden or a duty, 00:10:23.040 --> 00:10:27.340 but instead it is a path of wisdom for those of you who are this summer, 00:10:27.340 --> 00:10:33.360 the path of rightness, how we live rightly under the God who created us and made us. 00:10:33.360 --> 00:10:38.259 And so this is the good life that God has created for us 00:10:38.259 --> 00:10:46.019 as long as we continue to walk in the Spirit and not according to the flesh. 00:10:46.300 --> 00:10:52.840 And that's how He ends verse 4, and this is what launches us into this middle section of this argument, 00:10:53.300 --> 00:10:59.759 verses 5 through 8, where He talks about the dichotomy of the flesh and the Spirit 00:10:59.759 --> 00:11:03.039 and the significance of setting our minds on things. 00:11:03.360 --> 00:11:05.440 So look with me again at verses 5 through 8. 00:11:05.800 --> 00:11:09.120 I just want you to see how often this idea, 00:11:09.440 --> 00:11:12.879 I gave an introduction where I talked about the controlling passions of our mind, 00:11:13.200 --> 00:11:16.639 that's trying to give new language to what Paul says here when he says, 00:11:17.039 --> 00:11:19.560 set your minds on, okay? 00:11:20.060 --> 00:11:23.560 And we see it in all four verses, right? 00:11:23.559 --> 00:11:29.339 Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, 00:11:29.399 --> 00:11:32.559 but those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit. 00:11:33.099 --> 00:11:36.979 For to set the minds on the flesh is death, 00:11:37.179 --> 00:11:39.339 but to set the mind on the Spirit is life. 00:11:39.679 --> 00:11:41.559 For the mind that is set, in verse 7. 00:11:42.199 --> 00:11:43.759 And then verse 8, he summarizes it. 00:11:43.779 --> 00:11:45.500 He doesn't use the same word, but he says, 00:11:45.579 --> 00:11:46.819 for those who are in the flesh. 00:11:46.820 --> 00:11:50.580 So this is the idea Paul wants us to see, 00:11:50.760 --> 00:11:57.260 is that setting our mind is a critical part of understanding what it is that God has done for us. 00:11:57.560 --> 00:11:59.000 And he says three things about it. 00:11:59.360 --> 00:12:02.480 He says the things that we set our mind on reveal our true nature. 00:12:03.200 --> 00:12:06.280 The things that we set our mind on determine our ultimate destiny. 00:12:06.940 --> 00:12:10.700 And the things that we set our mind on reveal our ultimate attitude towards God. 00:12:10.700 --> 00:12:14.360 So our nature, our destiny, and our attitude towards God. 00:12:14.420 --> 00:12:18.300 And that's what we're going to look at for a few minutes this morning as we continue. 00:12:19.240 --> 00:12:22.560 So first, look at verse 5 with me again, right? 00:12:23.120 --> 00:12:27.100 Those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the 00:12:36.200 --> 00:12:42.660 We've seen it even in 8, 1 through 4, but we've also seen it in the argumentation that's come back. 00:12:42.759 --> 00:12:50.360 You see, particularly, let me read, or let me define it for you and then read two verses to help you see it a little more clearly. 00:12:50.740 --> 00:12:52.960 The flesh is not just our physical nature. 00:12:53.100 --> 00:12:55.060 It's not because we have skin and bone. 00:12:56.020 --> 00:13:01.860 Lots of translations, if you have the NIV translation with you today, it will say this as the sinful nature. 00:13:01.860 --> 00:13:13.419 Paul uses the word flesh not simply to talk about our physicality, but to talk about our part of a creation that is in rebellion against God. 00:13:13.899 --> 00:13:22.740 And it is about our fundamental nature that, if you go back to Romans 5, ever since Adam has been against God and not for him. 00:13:22.740 --> 00:13:35.340 So our flesh is shorthand for Paul to talk about all of our impulses to refuse, reject, ignore, and be opposed to God. 00:13:35.539 --> 00:13:37.600 This is what the flesh is, right? 00:13:37.799 --> 00:13:40.299 And he juxtaposes that with the Spirit. 00:13:40.519 --> 00:13:41.759 He says, what is the Spirit? 00:13:42.060 --> 00:13:43.899 The Spirit is the Spirit of God. 00:13:44.600 --> 00:13:45.940 You see what he said in verse 2? 00:13:47.539 --> 00:13:50.799 The Spirit is the Spirit of life that God has given us. 00:13:50.799 --> 00:14:02.719 It is, in fact, the promise that God himself, in a mysterious and wonderful way, actually comes to dwell in those who have placed their faith in Jesus Christ. 00:14:02.979 --> 00:14:07.099 God hasn't just saved us and then said, hey, I hope it goes well. 00:14:08.219 --> 00:14:09.359 You know, good luck with that. 00:14:10.079 --> 00:14:18.500 He's actually given us not just even power, like use the force, Luke, but he's given us himself to dwell inside of us. 00:14:20.799 --> 00:14:26.599 That is, the new way that we are able to live. 00:14:26.779 --> 00:14:29.759 So Romans 7, 5 and 6 say this. 00:14:29.759 --> 00:14:37.919 For while we were living in the flesh, our sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit for death. 00:14:38.779 --> 00:14:39.399 Verse 6. 00:14:39.399 --> 00:14:57.340 It's always hard to read Romans because there's so much complexity of argumentation that's going on in the background. 00:14:57.340 --> 00:14:59.320 But what I want you to see is really clear. 00:14:59.399 --> 00:15:04.600 He's saying there was an old way in the flesh and it led to death and it was in rebellion against God. 00:15:04.759 --> 00:15:12.340 But God has given us a new way in the Spirit with God present with us that we are now able to live differently. 00:15:12.340 --> 00:15:28.600 And so then, what Paul says in verse 5 is, if you live according to the flesh, that's what your controlling passions will be consumed by. 00:15:29.960 --> 00:15:34.040 They will be consumed by the things that are against God. 00:15:34.039 --> 00:15:41.839 If you live according to the Spirit, your mind will be consumed with the things of God. 00:19:29.419 To set the mind on the spirit is life and peace. 00:19:29.459 --> 00:19:34.279 And here he's explaining, not verse 5, but he's going back to what he said in verses 1 through 4. 00:19:34.279 --> 00:19:40.240 And he's explaining this is the reason why there's no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. 00:19:40.240 --> 00:19:42.920 Because in Christ Jesus you've been 00:20:33.979 And here's a way of, by your own energy, trying to please God by keeping the law. 00:20:34.240 --> 00:20:39.299 And back and forth and back and forth and saying, there is a way of life
