proclaim good news to the poor. 00:03:40.519 --> 00:03:45.599 He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovering of sight to the blind. 00:03:45.679 --> 00:03:47.899 To set at liberty those who are oppressed. 00:03:48.199 --> 00:03:50.659 And to proclaim the day of the Lord's favor. 00:03:51.079 --> 00:03:55.479 And then having read this, he sat down and he said, today it is fulfilled. 00:03:55.479 --> 00:03:59.579 What he was basically saying is, now that I am here. 00:04:03.259 --> 00:04:06.539 And then as we've seen, after that he went out and he did ministry. 00:04:06.819 --> 00:04:08.500 And he did it with a kind of authority. 00:04:08.699 --> 00:04:10.899 Authority over spiritual forces of darkness. 00:04:11.419 --> 00:04:15.479 Authority over physical sickness that would cause to destroy. 00:04:15.479 --> 00:04:16.079 Destroy. 00:04:18.099 --> 00:04:22.620 And in all of these things it arouses in our hearts the question, who is this one? 00:07:20.339 Amen. 00:07:20.339 --> 00:07:30.519 Well, friends, as we look at this story, one of the fun things about doing the Gospels is that they're stories. 00:07:30.979 --> 00:07:33.279 And by that I don't mean they're fictional. 00:07:33.699 --> 00:07:35.279 By that I mean they're narrative. 00:07:35.719 --> 00:07:41.319 Which means that the way that God is telling truth is telling it through an account of what happened. 00:07:42.359 --> 00:07:44.679 And so what we're going to do is we're going to look at this. 00:07:44.679 --> 00:07:49.779 And instead of giving you an outline of here are the three theses that Luke wants you to understand. 00:07:49.779 --> 00:07:52.879 What I want you to see is there are three movements in this drama. 00:07:53.359 --> 00:08:05.139 There are three actions that happen or three places that three three sections of this of this passage that capture us and grip us and teach us a bit about what is going on. 00:08:05.399 --> 00:08:08.559 We're going to see first we're going to see Jesus unveiled. 00:08:09.179 --> 00:08:12.339 And secondly, we're going to see Peter undone. 00:08:12.819 --> 00:08:17.259 And third, we are going to see Jesus calling for us to follow. 00:08:17.259 --> 00:08:21.959 So let's look at those three movements and see what they have for us this morning. 00:08:22.039 --> 00:08:25.680 First of all, Jesus unveiled in the glory of the catch. 00:08:25.759 --> 00:08:27.899 This is in verses 1 through 7. 00:08:28.279 --> 00:08:31.980 And as you look at this, I want you to sit by the Sea of Galilee. 00:08:32.200 --> 00:08:36.360 This Gennesaret is just a section of shoreline along the Sea of Galilee. 00:08:36.519 --> 00:08:38.580 Luke uses a different word to tell you. 00:08:38.580 --> 00:08:41.659 It's the same familiar place of Galilee. 00:08:41.659 --> 00:08:45.279 So Jesus is ministering up north in Israel. 00:08:46.139 --> 00:08:48.039 He's collected a group of people. 00:08:48.159 --> 00:08:49.779 They've heard about what he's doing. 00:08:49.919 --> 00:08:52.120 They've heard about his teaching with authority. 00:08:52.439 --> 00:08:54.259 And they've gathered along to do it. 00:08:54.459 --> 00:08:57.039 I want you to notice too that Luke says on one occasion. 00:08:57.659 --> 00:09:02.059 He's not saying this is an account of everything Jesus did. 00:09:02.059 --> 00:09:07.319 And he's not even saying, oh, and this is what happened right after what happened at the end of chapter 4. 00:09:07.439 --> 00:09:12.579 He's just saying, oh, let me tell you something else about what Jesus was doing during this time. 00:09:13.139 --> 00:09:14.500 And he was gathered in this. 00:09:14.619 --> 00:09:17.839 And the crowd became so big that they were pressing in on him. 00:09:17.959 --> 00:09:19.699 And he saw the crowd growing. 00:09:19.799 --> 00:09:21.579 And he thought, how do I love them? 00:09:21.639 --> 00:09:25.039 They've come here to hear the words that I have to say to them. 00:09:25.059 --> 00:09:26.219 And I want them to do that. 00:09:26.259 --> 00:09:28.899 So we love them enough to look for a solution. 00:09:28.899 --> 00:09:33.819 And lo and behold, there it was, two fishing boats by the water. 00:09:34.159 --> 00:09:38.279 The fishermen, having fished all night, were now out of their boats, 00:09:39.799 --> 00:09:42.840 tending to their nets at the end of a long night. 00:09:43.360 --> 00:09:46.659 And he said to the fishermen, hey, can I use your boat? 00:09:47.439 --> 00:09:49.340 And so they pushed out from shore. 00:09:49.480 --> 00:09:50.919 And the boat became his pulpit. 00:09:51.319 --> 00:09:56.639 And the water became his microphone amplification as he preached to a large crowd. 00:09:56.639 --> 00:10:00.299 But notice that for Luke, this isn't the point today. 00:10:00.480 --> 00:10:03.539 It is the context in which Jesus was doing something else. 00:10:03.740 --> 00:10:04.899 It's simply the setup. 00:10:05.679 --> 00:10:10.279 Because in verse 4 then, we begin to see the story really take shape. 00:10:10.759 --> 00:10:14.779 Because having then sat down as teachers would do and taught the people, 00:10:14.879 --> 00:10:19.259 when he was done teaching, he then turned to Peter and said, 00:10:19.259 --> 00:10:24.759 Peter, put out into the deep and put your nets down. 00:10:26.860 --> 00:10:34.059 Now, Peter would have been pretty taken aback by this for a number of reasons. 00:10:34.700 --> 00:10:38.819 One, Jesus was a carpenter, not a fisherman. 00:10:39.379 --> 00:10:42.740 Or maybe Jesus was an itinerant religious teacher. 00:10:42.740 --> 00:10:45.700 But he still didn't know anything about fishing. 00:10:46.820 --> 00:10:50.779 And anyone who knows anything about fishing knows that if you've fished all night 00:10:50.779 --> 00:10:52.360 and you haven't caught anything, 00:10:52.919 --> 00:10:57.759 you don't go out in the middle of the day to try again. 00:10:58.320 --> 00:11:00.840 Because the fish aren't out in the middle of the day. 00:11:01.039 --> 00:11:04.159 That's why fishermen always fish at dawn and dusk. 00:11:04.200 --> 00:11:05.899 They go out in the right times of day. 00:11:06.060 --> 00:11:08.620 And this was the wrong time of day. 00:11:08.620 --> 00:11:11.960 As one commentator said, 00:11:12.519 --> 00:11:15.620 we need not ask what goes through the mind of a professional fisherman 00:11:15.620 --> 00:11:20.759 in a foul mood when a non-fisherman orders him to do again in bad conditions 00:11:20.759 --> 00:11:25.120 what he has already tried and failed to do in good conditions. 00:11:27.279 --> 00:11:31.820 But interestingly, with all of that resistance, 00:11:32.500 --> 00:11:34.180 Peter still responds. 00:11:34.639 --> 00:11:36.419 He knows something of Jesus. 00:11:36.419 --> 00:11:41.319 He's heard the teaching, maybe, as he's been mending the nets. 00:11:42.039 --> 00:11:45.899 Maybe, likely, the account of his healing of his mother had happened 00:11:45.899 --> 00:11:47.839 as it was reported in chapter 4. 00:11:48.099 --> 00:11:49.479 He knew something of him. 00:11:49.539 --> 00:11:50.599 He called him master. 00:11:51.199 --> 00:11:55.199 It's an honorary term, like, of teacher or one who deserves honor. 00:11:56.599 --> 00:11:57.139 He said, 00:11:57.579 --> 00:12:00.459 this is the dumbest thing in the world, 00:12:00.599 --> 00:12:02.620 but all right, I'll try it. 00:12:02.620 --> 00:12:02.679 I'll try it. 00:12:06.419 --> 00:12:10.559 Peter allowed Jesus to invade 00:12:10.559 --> 00:12:15.259 an inappropriate place in his life. 00:12:16.339 --> 00:12:18.059 Peter may have looked at him and said, 00:12:18.259 --> 00:12:19.740 he's a great teacher. 00:12:20.500 --> 00:12:22.299 He maybe even, he healed my mother. 00:12:23.779 --> 00:12:27.019 That seems like a good place for Jesus to stay in my life. 00:12:27.019 --> 00:12:33.980 Now Jesus has insinuated himself into the place of Peter's expertise, 00:12:34.980 --> 00:12:37.100 the place of his greatest ability. 00:12:40.539 --> 00:12:43.019 Peter's doubtful, but he gives him a chance. 00:12:45.759 --> 00:12:47.000 I than what those nets were built to catch. 00:14:57.679 --> 00:15:00.099 And so they called their friend over in the other boat. 00:15:00.259 --> 00:15:01.740 And they put the fish in the boat. himself to say, 00:16:06.480 --> 00:16:07.580 I'm better than you. 00:16:07.620 --> 00:16:09.100 Or I'm bigger than you. 00:16:09.100 --> 00:16:10.500 Or I'm greater than you. 00:16:10.560 --> 00:16:13.540 Although all of those things, as we will see, are true. 00:16:15.320 --> 00:16:19.480 But he's saying, don't you see how much I love you? 00:16:20.040 --> 00:16:23.899 That I will use all of my greatness for your good. 00:16:23.899 --> 00:16:32.240 And so, with Peter, we must look at this Jesus again with new eyes. 00:16:32.720 --> 00:16:34.019 Who is this man? 00:16:34.139 -->
