older, then we reach that certain point we just wish we could get a little bit younger. 00:05:41.639 --> 00:05:45.439 Life teaches us as well that we have limits of our capacity, 00:05:45.660 --> 00:05:49.220 our emotional capacity, our physical capacity. 00:05:49.400 --> 00:05:54.620 We reach max, and we can't do anything more. 00:05:55.420 --> 00:05:58.340 We suffer from time constraints. 00:07:00.180 However, sometimes we go wrong as people because we want to reject those limitations. 00:07:00.879 --> 00:07:04.879 If we remind ourselves of what happened in the Garden of Eden, 00:07:04.959 --> 00:07:07.459 we think about Adam and Eve, what happened there? 00:07:07.459 --> 00:07:10.719 They weren't content to live under God's rule. 00:07:10.799 --> 00:07:13.479 They wanted to become like God. 00:07:14.379 --> 00:07:15.500 And we can do that. 00:07:15.579 --> 00:07:18.659 We can try and take God off his rightful throne, 00:07:18.659 --> 00:07:20.879 and we can put ourselves there instead. 00:07:21.479 --> 00:07:27.060 We can be guilty of pride that rejects the limits that are placed on us. 00:07:27.120 --> 00:07:28.359 Or we can do another thing. 00:07:29.120 --> 00:07:32.199 We can put other people on a pedestal. 00:07:32.279 --> 00:07:35.419 We can make someone else so important in our lives 00:07:35.420 --> 00:07:39.439 that to us they then have a God-like significance. 00:07:40.640 --> 00:07:44.020 And we place on someone else a crushing weight of expectation 00:07:44.020 --> 00:07:49.259 because we don't understand that only God is supposed to have that ultimate position. 00:07:50.600 --> 00:07:54.520 So the key to being fully human, biblically, 00:07:54.720 --> 00:07:56.560 is to embrace our limits, 00:07:56.680 --> 00:08:00.520 to live under God's good rule. 00:08:00.519 --> 00:08:04.279 So that's a truth that we recognize. 00:08:05.319 --> 00:08:07.740 The Bible also teaches us very clearly, 00:08:08.039 --> 00:08:09.579 Isaiah 40 is a great example, 00:08:09.799 --> 00:08:11.180 God is unlimited, 00:08:11.979 --> 00:08:13.779 and he cannot be measured. 00:08:13.899 --> 00:08:16.219 That's what we mean when we talk about God being infinite. 00:08:16.459 --> 00:08:19.120 God has no limits. 00:08:19.659 --> 00:08:21.839 He doesn't have the limitations that we have 00:08:21.839 --> 00:08:23.579 because he's not human. 00:08:23.779 --> 00:08:24.740 He's not created. 00:08:24.959 --> 00:08:25.859 He is eternal, 00:08:26.379 --> 00:08:27.579 and he is uncreated. 00:08:27.579 --> 00:08:32.120 He doesn't suffer those restrictions of space and time. 00:08:32.600 --> 00:08:34.340 He rules over them. 00:08:34.439 --> 00:08:35.000 So, for example, 00:08:35.079 --> 00:08:37.460 he sees all of history in a single planets, 00:08:51.620 --> 00:08:51.980 galaxies, 00:08:52.139 --> 00:08:53.279 and at the micro level. 00:08:54.159 --> 00:08:55.139 As Donald was praying, 00:08:55.139 --> 00:08:57.779 he knows the number of hairs on our head. 00:08:58.319 --> 00:08:59.439 We have a God who, 00:08:59.600 --> 00:09:00.120 unlike us, 00:09:00.139 --> 00:09:03.059 his power and his capability never diminishes. 00:09:03.799 --> 00:09:06.840 He is not affected by age or decay. 00:09:07.779 --> 00:09:09.539 He doesn't find that he gets pressured 00:09:09.539 --> 00:09:11.460 and makes bad decisions. 00:09:12.299 --> 00:09:12.639 In fact, 00:09:12.699 --> 00:09:14.600 the only limit that there is on God 00:09:14.600 --> 00:09:16.539 is that he cannot sin. 00:09:17.179 --> 00:09:19.980 He must always remain true to his character, 00:09:20.399 --> 00:09:23.419 which is good and perfect and holy. 00:09:23.419 --> 00:09:25.099 And so, 00:09:25.179 --> 00:09:27.559 I want us to explore these two realities 00:09:27.559 --> 00:09:30.419 by using Isaiah 40. 00:09:31.139 --> 00:09:33.000 I want us to see clearly the difference 00:09:33.000 --> 00:09:34.139 between God and us 00:09:34.139 --> 00:09:36.439 and to celebrate that as good news, 00:09:36.779 --> 00:09:38.259 to worship him as a result, 00:09:39.579 --> 00:09:42.939 to recognize that embracing this infinite God, 00:09:43.399 --> 00:09:44.899 the one who has no limits, 00:09:44.939 --> 00:09:48.120 is the key to all that we need in our lives. 00:09:49.099 --> 00:09:51.360 This is why Isaiah 40 was written. 00:09:51.360 --> 00:09:54.860 It was written to deliver to a people, 00:09:54.980 --> 00:09:55.759 people of Israel, 00:09:56.139 --> 00:09:57.779 who were being prepared for exile 00:09:57.779 --> 00:09:59.460 because of their disobedience, 00:10:00.019 --> 00:10:03.580 because they were rejecting life under God's rule. 00:10:04.600 --> 00:10:05.680 Isaiah is saying to them, 00:10:05.740 --> 00:10:06.860 even in that situation, 00:10:07.080 --> 00:10:08.300 in turning to this God, 00:10:08.379 --> 00:10:09.980 in turning to the God of no limits, 00:10:10.500 --> 00:10:12.899 this is your one hope for security, 00:10:13.639 --> 00:10:15.800 trusting in this God who keeps his promises, 00:10:16.000 --> 00:10:18.420 this God who can be trusted absolutely. 00:10:18.419 --> 00:10:20.019 And so, 00:10:20.120 --> 00:10:20.899 for us this evening, 00:10:21.079 --> 00:10:24.219 I want us to receive this God 00:10:24.219 --> 00:10:25.379 and his good news, 00:10:25.500 --> 00:10:27.259 to embrace our own limits 00:10:27.259 --> 00:10:29.899 and to embrace the God without limits, 00:10:30.299 --> 00:10:32.240 and to see how God in Jesus 00:10:32.240 --> 00:10:35.279 has provided out of his infinite love 00:10:35.279 --> 00:10:37.159 all that we lack. 00:10:38.240 --> 00:10:38.699 So, 00:10:38.759 --> 00:10:40.439 let's look at our passage. 00:10:40.679 --> 00:10:42.599 Let's turn to Isaiah 40, 00:10:42.659 --> 00:10:43.179 and let's see, 00:10:43.319 --> 00:10:43.860 first of all, 00:10:43.919 --> 00:10:45.199 the God who measures, 00:10:46.219 --> 00:10:47.639 but cannot be measured. 00:10:47.639 --> 00:10:48.960 There's wonderful imagery 00:10:48.960 --> 00:10:51.480 all through this passage. 00:10:51.699 --> 00:10:53.059 Verse 12, 00:10:53.179 --> 00:10:54.340 we see it very clearly. 00:10:54.460 --> 00:10:57.539 The choice of scale is deliberate. 00:10:58.220 --> 00:10:58.980 Here is a picture 00:10:58.980 --> 00:11:01.639 that the largest things in our universe, 00:11:01.779 --> 00:11:02.460 they're small, 00:11:02.620 --> 00:11:05.600 and they're controlled by God the creator. 00:11:06.179 --> 00:11:06.559 So, 00:11:06.620 --> 00:11:08.939 he can measure all the waters of the universe 00:11:08.939 --> 00:11:10.240 in the hollow of his hand. 00:11:10.360 --> 00:11:10.480 You know, 00:11:10.500 --> 00:11:11.759 we can manage a few drops. 00:11:12.480 --> 00:11:30.420 He's held the dust of the earth in a basket, 00:11:31.800 --> 00:11:33.720 weighing Mount Everest, 00:11:33.820 --> 00:11:34.340 as it were, 00:11:34.639 --> 00:11:35.440 on a scale. 00:11:35.580 --> 00:11:36.800 Here is a picture of God 00:11:36.800 --> 00:11:38.600 who is in absolute control. 00:11:38.600 --> 00:11:42.060 He has the capacity to measure 00:11:42.060 --> 00:11:45.220 and control the universe he created. 00:11:45.340 --> 00:11:48.600 He is without rival in that regard. 00:11:49.420 --> 00:11:49.580 So, 00:11:49.740 --> 00:11:51.500 God measures all things, 00:11:52.000 --> 00:11:54.480 but then Isaiah is quick to point out 00:11:54.480 --> 00:11:56.040 that he cannot be measured. 00:11:56.159 --> 00:11:58.180 That's the point of verse 13 and 14. 00:11:58.659 --> 00:12:00.860 Who has understood the mind of the Lord 00:12:00.860 --> 00:12:03.440 or instructed him as his counselor? 00:12:03.440 --> 00:12:05.060 The implied answer, 00:12:05.260 figured out tactics 00:12:54.740 --> 00:12:57.299 to make sure that you're going to defeat them 00:12:57.299 --> 00:12:58.159 and deal with them. 00:12:58.459 --> 00:13:00.059 It's clear from Isaiah 40 00:13:00.059 --> 00:13:02.259 that God has the measure of us as people. 00:13:02.959 --> 00:13:05.439 We are no challenge to his uniqueness. 00:13:06.179 --> 00:13:08.799 We are no rival to him. 00:13:08.899 --> 00:13:12.159 He is infinitely greater than us. 00:13:13.419 --> 00:13:14.459 And Isaiah brings that out 00:13:14.459 --> 00:13:15.199 in a number of ways. 00:13:15.299 --> 00:13:17.539 Verse 15 to 17, first of all, 00:13:18.319 --> 00:13:20.099 we see that the collected strength 00:13:20.099 --> 00:13:21.939 and wisdom and intentions of humanity 00:13:21.939 --> 00:13:23.779 are nothing compared to God. 00:13:25.059 --> 00:13:26.439 Surely the nations 00:13:26.439 --> 00:13:29.699 are like a drop in a bucket. 00:13:30.059 --> 00:13:31.699 Or the islands 00:13:31.699 --> 00:13:34.539 just like fine dust. 00:13:35.459 --> 00:13:38.000 Nothing compared to God. 00:13:38.799 --> 00:13:40.679 It brings to mind the story of 00:13:40.679 --> 00:13:41.919 the Tower of Babel 00:13:41.919 --> 00:13:43.379 in Genesis chapter 11. 00:13:44.459 --> 00:13:46.619 So you have that picture of humanity 00:13:46.619 --> 00:13:48.659 in rebellion against God. 00:13:48.759 --> 00:13:49.259 God said, 00:13:49.839 --> 00:13:51.919 scatter around the world 00:13:51.919 --> 00:13:56.199 and subdue it and live as God's 00:13:56.199 --> 00:13:58.839 vice kings on the earth. 00:13:59.079 --> 00:14:00.779 But instead they gather together 00:14:00.779 --> 00:14:01.779 and in human pride 00:14:01.779 --> 00:14:03.519 they decide to build a vast tower 00:14:03.519 there's that wonderful picture 00:14:07.959 --> 00:14:08.319 where you've got, 00:14:08.399 --> 00:14:08.879 on the one hand, 00:14:09.319 --> 00:14:11.039 the people building up in pride, 00:14:11.439 --> 00:14:12.879 trying to build this tower to heaven. 00:14:12.879 --> 00:14:13.860 And then it says, 00:14:14.700 --> 00:14:16.919 God came down and saw. 00:14:17.340 --> 00:14:18.200 And the impression is, 00:14:18.360 --> 00:14:19.939 what they're doing is so small 00:14:19.939 --> 00:14:21.419 and so insignificant 00:14:21.419 --> 00:14:23.820 and no threat at all to God. 00:14:47.559 to offer all the animals 00:14:47.559 --> 00:14:49.379 of that country as sacrifices. 00:14:49.519 --> 00:14:50.279 What it's saying is that 00:14:50.279 --> 00:14:52.740 while God
